Lets define what we mean by a search engine optimised web page. There are two essential aspects to this:

• first a page that is search engine friendly must be easy to index, and
• second the page must be written in such a way that it reaches your intended audience

Each of these aspects are described in detail in the following paragraphs.

How to make your web page easy to index

A page that is easy to indx is a page that the search engine robots can easily read and index. Its that simple. In order to make your page robot friendly the html on your page needs to simple and well structured.There are two key to makeing your page as simple as possible:

• the markup (html) on your page must be as simple as possible
• the page should be well structured

The easiest way to make your html simple is to hand code your page. This sounds hard but you only need to know a handful of html tags to be able to do this. A well structured page is one where the following guidelines have been followed:

• Social Marketing removes your dependency on search engine marketing. So you no longer have to rely on Google to get eyeballs to your pages.
• You control who,what,where,when,why and how you market. This means that you can target your marketing efforts effectively.
• Social marketing results can be immeadiate unlike search engine marketing where you may need to wait months for your pages to be indexed.
• Social marketing is fun and interactive unlike search engine marketing which is a bit of a wait and see game.
• If you have targeted the wrong market or opportunity you can identify this quickly and make your escape plans or start afresh

You can develop excellent websites with just HTML and CSS but if you want to add interactivity to your websites then you are likely to also need Javascript, PHP and a database like MYSQL. These skills are described briefly below:

HTML

HTML is the language of the web hence you must understand it if you want to build your own websites. An investment in learning HTML is very rewarding and it will allow you to understand much of how the web works. This is also a must have skill if you want to do your own Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

CSS

CSS or Cascading Style Sheets is the next skill you should master. CSS is quiet easy once you take the time to understand how it works. CSS makes changing the style used on your websites easy. Good use of CSS will minimize the number of graphics you need on a website to make it look good.

Web Graphics

Your website needs to look good so you need to have a good understanding of web graphics. If you decide to produce your own make sure that you don’t overdo the number of graphics on your website and also be warned that its very tempting to spend too much time making your graphics look better than they really need to be. Keep it simple.

In addition to the above 3 essential skills one or more of the following will be needed for the more complex sites:

Javascript

Javascript allows you to add what are effectively mini programs to you web pages. Typical uses of Javascript are to:

• interact with users
• validating user input to forms
• fancy menus

PHP

PHP is a scripting language that is used to create dynamic websites. The best way to explain this is via an example:

One typical and very powerful use of PHP is to personalize sales pages. For example lets say you have a squeeze page (explained in sales process section) offering a free demo of your product. When the user enters their name and email address into the form on the squeeze page you can have a php script(program) that reads the persons name and then uses it on any following pages that they see. When done well this is very impressive to your website visitor.

PHP is also a great tool to use to interact with a database on your website. A simple example would be where you have a membership website that requires members to log in every time they use the website. The members username and password are stored in the database and the login page uses a php script to check that the username and password are valid.

MySQL

If your website needs a database them MySQL is a good option. Its free and integrates well with PHP. Wordpress uses both PHP and MySQL so if you are a Wordpress user any knowledge of PHP and MySQL will come in useful – though for most uses you won’t need any detailed knowledge.

I use a simple test when checking claims that a theme has been optimized. I call it the “Theme Tag Test!” Assuming that there is an online example of the theme in question you can conduct this quick and easy SEO test as follows:

1. using your browser display a single post of the theme
2. then go to the view menu of your browser and choose view->page source (Firefox), or view->source(IE)
3. this should result in a new page that displays the actual html and php code for the post you are viewing
4. you don’t need to read all of this html and php code
5. just find the first pair of <h1> and </h1> tags
6. if the theme has been SEO’d as promised these tags should contain the page name
7. so if the name of the post is “My great SEO theme” then that is what should be between the tags.
8. if the tags contain anything else then as as far as I am concerned the theme is not SEO’d correctly

What tends to happen is that most themes put the blog name in the <h1> tags for every page and post on the blog. This is fine for the home page of the blog but is a terrible waste of valuable <h1> tags if used on every page. The name of your post should be in the h1 tags as it tells the reader what the post is about, ie its the main subject of the post and thats what you want the search engines to know.

Try the Theme tag test on the theme you are currently using. My guess is that the majority of themes will fail this simple SEO test. And let me know if it works fo fails for your theme. It’s always great to get feedback.

The key is to focus your website on one theme and ensure that he content is relevant and informative. It may take a little longer to produce an dsense website using the four pillar approach but your patience will be rewarded with a great website and happy visitors who will click your relevant ads and earn you the money you deserve.
