Deliver personalized email campaigns with 30-40% higher open rates

Show dynamic website content based on visitor segments

Create custom ad creatives for different audience groups

Businesses using AI personalization are seeing significantly higher conversion rates compared to traditional approaches.

3. Content Creation: Faster, Smarter, Human-Approved

AI is an incredible assistant for content marketers. It can:

As we approach the end of the year, you’ll be starting to see a bunch of “SEO for 2015″ articles. Well I’m going to do you one better…I’m writing one to help you rank better not just a few months from now (come on – anyone can do THAT, right?) but five YEARS from now. Admittedly I’m probably not going to be able to make some offhand references to some of my favorite shows and pop-culture, but I will try to keep this article meaningful. While I listed 2020 in the title, this is more meant to mean “the future past the current state of algorithms” and not necessarily 2020 (though it will be interesting to look back then and see how close or far off I was in when things will happen).

What we’re really going to be looking at here is what technologies Google is advancing on and what that will mean for SEO and Internet marketers. Before I begin, I’m going to give a big thanks to Bill Slawski (and not my first). On his blog SEO by the Sea, Bill does an excellent job of Google patent analysis and helps put them in terms and applications we can all make sense of. I say this now as he’s a solid reason I’ve been able to stay ahead of many technologies.

Alright, now let’s get to it …

Let’s Paint…

A picture. For those of you in my age group, you’ll remember watching The Jetsons and thinking about how cool that world would be. Well, all that coolness comes with a cost and here’s the rub, we don’t want to pay for it. We want to continue adding cooler technology to our lives but we don’t want the price tag that goes with it, but it has to be paid for. And so companies will develop it and give it to us for virtually nothing but a tiny little bit of our privacy. And then a bit more.

So, what this means is that we are on the road to an enormously convenient future with a lot of cool gadgets and nick-knacks and we’ll give up a ton of our privacy and personal information in exchange for that. At the lowest level, to illustrate the point, I’d simply need to ask you when the last time you read a license agreement for software or the permission for an app you were installing. OK, so let’s assume we’ll give up our information and privacy to corporations pretty freely for neat things that are shiny, what does that have to do with SEO in 2020? Now that we know what we’ll give up, let’s look at what’s in the works to help separate you from your information but give you a big payoff in convenience…

Google Likes Robots (in a “Nest”)

The biggest change coming has to do with the “always on” or, as I like to think, “always trackable” status of our lives and it’s not slowing down. Our desire for convenience and to own “Rosie the robot” gives companies like Google huge leverage and I’m not going to pretend I’m not easily seduced by it.

If we look to the acquisition of a myriad of robotics companies and nest, we can see the writing on the wall. Military applications aside, it is clear that they are looking for further integration into your home. It may not be directly – I have a hunch they’ll simply be providing a free or very low cost infrastructure to manufacturers of devices similar to what they did with Android, giving them a reach into areas of your life they otherwise couldn’t touch. Imagine a world where they know when you’re out of bread, what climate you prefer, whether your house is dirty or not, and how often you eat out. Now imagine marketing into that world.

To really get a grasp on this point one needs simply to look to their recently granted patent, “System and method for enhancing user search results by determining a television program currently being displayed in proximity to an electronic device.” What we’re seeing here (Cliff Notes) is Google using your device to listen in and pay attention to your television and use that to augment search results. Sorry guys, your guilty pleasure watching of reality TV is no longer secret, but can be used to adjust your search results. Now, carry that one step further – why not listen in to determine if there’s yelling in the house or if you’ve just been intimate and use that information? Now again, imagine marketing into that world.

And it gets more interesting.

You Are the Borg

All right, I warned you that I might make a few references to pop culture but being the person that I am, my references are pretty nerdy so you’ll have to bare with me.

Stepping past Google Glass, they’ve also now been granted a number of patents around contact lenses. Likely taking their lead from the fact that we want data access but don’t want to look like nerds or get booted out of pubs, they’re taking it to the next level and planting more directly on your body when only you can see it. Now, imagine marketing into that.

Well, that’s not all you’re going to be marketing into. Take that one step further and imagine that users are identifiable whether they want to be or not…

That’s the Orwellian rabbit-hole that that the recently granted Google patent, “Using peer devices to locate a mobile device” takes us down. To be clear, this patent does not cover gathering identity information, but it does cover the usage of various other connected devices to determine your location. Other devices like (to use the points above) your fridge, your thermostat, or just the other Android phones around you.

While this unto itself is only a minor aid to marketers (again re-establishing location when it was absent), one doesn’t have to stretch much to take it one step further and allow for additional user data to be established furthering their quest for perfection in advertising. They’re just helping us by taking the perky individual’s settings out of the equation.

And All This Is Awesome Because…

We have on our marketing hats right now. While some of the points made above and surely many patents I haven’t even touched on here (and likely – thousands I haven’t even read) may make one worry for their privacy, that’s not really the point, and like a frog that doesn’t leap from a pot of water slowly brought to a boil – these areas will be quietly and slowly adopted and what might seem like a show-stopper today will simply be the way things are tomorrow.

So what 2020 looks like as an Internet marketer is very different from today. Targeting capabilities will clearly be leaps-and-bounds ahead of where they are today. Imagine if you will that you’re a pub. A Google device detects the yelling discussed above, it’s 7 p.m. on a Monday night, and your device leaves your residence. Morality aside, that’s a pretty good time for the drink special to pop up on your phone (or dare I say…contacts). And don’t worry about the drive home, your Google Car knows right where you want to go and will get you back safe and sound.

As an Internet marketer, I set aside the part of me that cringes at the inevitable loss of privacy inherent in the future and look instead to the opportunities. Each device a user engages with will be monitored and their preferences stored. Our targeting capabilities will be unparalleled, surpassing what even a user themselves may know they want until it is shown to them. It is our job to continue to watch not just what the algorithms are doing but what their patents are showing us they are interested in pursuing. It is through this that we get a firmer understanding of what the future holds for us, the marketers, and the data and user patterns we will have access to. And believe me, the examples listed above are just the very small tip of the iceberg.

Between 2010-2015 the SEO industry went from being seen as a shady backroom box of tricks to a leading and essential marketing channel, driven by data, trends and user behavior statistics.

With ongoing changes Google kept SEO agencies, freelancers and internal teams on their toes by releasing update after update to hone and shape not only what they want search results to look like, but how they want us to act and work within them. This included the once-famed Penguin Update, aimed at webspam and link building practices, supposedly impacted around 0.1% of searches when originally launched, but went on to shape the importance of positive link building, utilization of tools and data and birthed job roles around SEO content strategy while strengthening the importance of content marketing.

Long term with the development of RankBrain and (perceived) closer to real-time algorithm changes, more core updates on a regular basis and the journey through ‘Content is King’ to UX – SEO has become theorized in some sense, with many of us having our own opinions and approaches to the same end result.

As we’ve reached 2025 we have in some parts see new developments from Google slow down, with the company’s focus seemingly on updating reporting suites and core updates that offer little more than ‘an improvement to search results’. We’re no longer beholden to the next big Penguin or Panda updates, but more to the inner workings of Google and sporadic updates to its Search Quality Guidelines – with this in mind, what exactly can we expect from SEO in 2020? Adhering to Google guidelines becomes harder, or easier?

We all know how SEO works and many of us will have specialisms or approaches to SEO we feel get results quicker, but with vague updates and unannounced tweaks to algorithms, is it becoming harder to adhere to Google’s guidelines?

Certainly, the unpredictability is a factor at times – with the recent updates to search guidelines on YMYL and E-A-T being announced, there’s a perception the goalposts are moving ever so slightly, every so often.

This means that if you’re scoring just inside the post on Monday, you might be wide of the mark by a fraction on Tuesday. For websites where the SEO team is at the mercy of web development or other factors outside of their control, this can prove a challenge.

Of course, any SEO agency or specialist worth their weight in gold will be able to outline and approach any issues with a solution in hand.

The flipside to this is, however, is that we all have a clear idea of what a good website looks like and what is going to rank page 1 for chosen keywords. With guideline updates, an industry that shares knowledge like no other and a focus on developing strategies that are future proof, there is no reason for every update to send SEO campaigns spiraling.

In 2020, we predict that the next wave of guidelines will be released, and our prediction is these again will be focusing on trust and authority – not a million miles away from where we’ve been for the last few years.

Actioning and adhering to search quality guidelines

Google Search Quality Guidelines regularly update – these guidelines reflect how Google wants you to work within a website and the process the search engine’s algorithm will take to evaluate the relevance of the website for keyword usage.

These guidelines take into account:

E-A-T – The Expert, Authority, Trust of the website in relation to the target subject

Page Quality – How the page is laid out, how it works and whether it has the user’s best interests at heart

Needs Met – Factors around whether the page ANSWERS the needs of the query

The page quality is assessed to identify where the text is placed, the wording used, content used and the quality of the content.

Google’s most recent updates put E-A-T elements at the heart of the Page Quality section of its guidelines, based on industry and type of product.

The blanket approach, and the actions needed to adhere to (or in fact exceed) Google guidelines are that the page should be “more specific than the query, but would still be helpful for many or most users because” the company is reputable in the area.

Top nine factors content managers should audit for on-page SEO

Element to Optimise

Definition

Landing Page URL

URL of the landing page (after the website name)

Meta Title

This is the blue link that shows in Google

Meta Description

The text that shows under the blue link in search results – to draw a user to click

Heading 1 Tag

A title that shows at the top of a page

Heading 2 / 3 Tags

Additional titles which are placed within the content of a page

Content

The physical content on the page needs to meet particular criteria

Keyword Density

The percentage of keywords to total text ratio on a page

Images

The size, name, and title of an image on the page

Internal Links

Links which point to other pages on the website

Dependence on technical SEO reduced but is still important
Technical SEO has been on the rise for a number of years but the buzz behind it has somewhat plateaued in the last 12 months or so – although it is still essential to audit from a technical perspective regularly. Traditionally, technical SEO would include web structure, speed, hosting and so on – with JSON, mark up and structured tagging following on from this.

Across client bases we’ve seen the need for technical SEO regularly drop by just under 50%, with wider-ranging audits, working with web development on new site builds and regular crawls on health being the norm. Working in this way allows for time to be split effectively across multiple areas of SEO and better use of budget. Education on the technical aspects client-side also means SEO agencies and professionals can focus time elsewhere.

Within semi-regular technical SEO audits, there are some core elements to check, all of which will help identify issues and improve the technical performance of a website, without impacting the day-to-day of search marketing.

Top eight factors you should audit for technical SEO

Element to Optimise

Definition

Web structure and URL Structure

Essentially the folders in use website is built

HTTPS/SSL

Security for customers or users visiting the site

HTML Build

Code-behind core elements of a website

CSS / Javascript

Code behind the theme and functionality of a site

Schema / JSON

Code that allows websites to send additional information to search engines

Server Speed

The speed in which servers respond to requests from users

Sitemaps/Robots

Used by Google to crawl websites

Accessibility

Are all pages able to be found

2025 and beyond

As always, Google is likely to throw a couple of curveballs – However, the SEO industry is coming of age again and it’s no longer an area of expertise that “anybody” can have a go at. There’s a need to understand the market of your clients, their customers, their collateral and the demands of Google to achieve success. Following clear structure, regular audits and systematic approaches will allow all of the above to be achieved.

Want to succeed at SEO ? Good practices start with avoiding bad habits of the past. Eliminate ineffective practices and replace them with strategic, content-focused tactics. Here are seven great ways to do that:

1. Approach keywords strategically

Without proper keyword research, any SEO campaign is doomed to failure. Keyword research sets the stage and lays the groundwork for an SEO campaign.

Take a vague keyword phrase like “dog food.” This might be used by people seeking information on dog food or news about it (such as recalls). But a specific keyword phrase such as “buy raw dog food” is more likely to be selected by someone who’s ready to buy a specific type of canine chow.

Keyword phrases should be as specific to your company as possible and have an easy, conversational sound not a marketing vibe. Just consider how you search for things online.

Perhaps more important than selecting specific phrasing, however, is not becoming paralyzed or slowed down by the temptation to achieve perfection in keyword optimization for every text-based piece of content you publish.

While keywords form the basis of an effective understanding of — and competition for — a target market, trying for a #1 search-engine ranking (or even for a top 10 spot) for your business niche’s top keyword is usually extremely difficult when you’re starting an SEO campaign in a field with competitors who have doing this for a while.

Instead, take a long-tail approach to keywords. Consistently publish as much amazing content as you can, which naturally will include keywords, and you’ll capture long-tail search traffic. This type of traffic tends to come from keywords you would probably never find during the research phase and that are often more targeted, resulting in better conversion rates.

2. Strictly adhere to an originality rule

When it comes to SEO, originality refers to duplicate content or the same text existing at two different URLs — something that you should always avoid. Republishing articles from other sites is not only a potential copyright infringement, but it also creates duplicate content, which can ruin your site’s search rankings.

Check to see if your site has duplicate content by using tools like CopyScape, SiteLiner and Screaming Frog. Find more details about how to identify and remove duplicate content in this article I wrote.

3. Strategically adjust your site’s navigation and internal links

The way your site’s navigation is structured plays a major role in how search engines determine the importance of each page. Simply put, the more often a page is linked to within your website, the more Page Rank flow it has and the higher it will rank in search-engine results pages for relevant queries.

Most webmasters and business owners, however, have no idea how their internal link flow is structured and are often surprised to learn that unimportant pages or ones that never stand a chance rank high in search-engines results (like contact pages) are cannibalizing the majority of their site’s Page Rank flow. This offers major opportunities for improvement with relatively minor effort.

To optimize your site’s navigation, internal link structure and Page Rank flow, start by auditing these elements using a tool like Site Liner or Screaming Frog. Use the output to identify pages that aren’t important or that have little content on them (such as contact pages) that receive a high volume of inbound links. Next, use special no index code in these pages to tell search engines to not index these pages and add no follow code for all links to them, in order to preserve Page Rank flow. This causes an effect similar to shutting off a leaky water valve: It redirects Page Rank flow to the pages that truly matter.

Be sure to no index all pages that have duplicate content, such as category and tag archives, which are common in the WordPress content-management tool. You can use various WordPress plugins, such as Yoast SEO, to accomplish this easily. Be careful with these steps, though. Improperly using the no index and no follow attributes can severely decrease your site’s rankings if you aren’t careful and strategic. Let an expert do this if you aren’t absolutely certain about what you’re doing.

4. Optimize on-site elements across your site

While title tags are still important for SEO purposes, meta descriptions have lost their influence in the ranking algorithm. Meta descriptions do, however, provide a perfect place to put some marketing talent to use, through the creation compelling copy that attracts clicks from the search-results page.

Title tags and meta descriptions should be present on each page of your site and should be relevant and optimized. Too short or too long titles and descriptions can harm SEO efforts, so it’s best to conduct an audit of your site to identify any large-scale issues with these elements.

Other on-page elements that factor into the ranking algorithm include H1 tags, content length, internal and external links, ads, bullet points, images and text formatting.

5. Optimize your site’s load speed

A site’s load speed is a factor in search-engine rankings and it also affects the rates of converting visitors to customers. Amazon calculated that a one-second increase in page-load speed would cost a company $1.6 billion in lost sales per year. Other studies have shown 40 percent of website visitors abandon a site that takes longer than three seconds to load. Still, most business owners or webmasters fail to put enough effort into optimizing their site’s load speed.

Start by checking your site’s load time by using a tool like Pingdom, which will give you a breakdown of each element and how long it took to load. Use the resulting information to optimize images or pieces of code that are causing long load times. Upgrading your web host from a shared server to a dedicated or virtual private network (VPN) setup can significantly reduce load times, too.

6. Don’t buy links. Earn them.

Because the quantity and quality of inbound links have a significant impact on a website’s rankings, the temptation to buy links on other sites is strong. But link buying and selling are against Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.

Additionally, search engines are now very good at detecting suspicious, manipulative or unnatural links. The result? If you buy or sell links, your website’s search-engine rankings could fall significantly. Save your money and instead spend it on creating content that will earn or attract inbound links on its own merit. For specific examples about how to create and publish content that earns inbound links naturally, see my e-book The Definitive Guide to Marketing Your Business Online.

7. Be natural

If you feel like you have to wedge a keyword into a sentence, you’re approaching SEO with the wrong mind-set. Whereas keyword density was a popular concept five years ago, it’s irrelevant now. Instead, focus on creating content that your readers will find valuable.

If a sentence sounds unnatural because you’re trying to optimize it for search engines, change it. Search engines are cracking down harder than ever before on keyword stuffing, so such tactics are likely to cause your rankings to fall and annoy anyone who tries to read your content, killing your credibility.

You don’t have to spend money on an SEO expert to dramatically improve your search visibility. Simple steps can achieve major SEO boosts. In the end, SEO is all about improving the usability and user experience of your website. Any change that makes your visitors happier is likely to make search engines happier. So SEO is really about making people happy and that should make us all happy.

Just a few years ago, search-engine optimization was widely considered a specialized knowledge of how to manipulate Google’s search rankings with clever, secret tactics. While that was an accurate assessment then, the SEO industry has matured. It is now a dynamic, multifaceted online-marketing discipline that transcends clever trickery, and has become an essential requirement of expertise for every online marketer.

Google has facilitated and accelerated this shift by changing the game in ways that help users find information faster and in a manner that emphasizes the giant’s own products. So how is SEO evolving, and what is Google’s goal? What can online-marketing professionals learn about the future best practices of the SEO industry by studying Google’s present pattern of changes? Read on.

1. SEO is now more about building a brand than manipulation or trickery.

Changes over the past two years already have shifted our perception of search-engine optimization. We’re no longer talking about just links, keywords and PageRank. Instead, we’re discussing branding and content strategy. But building a brand and publishing high-quality content are not new concepts, they’ve always been key parts of inbound marketing. So why the sudden shift in buzz within the SEO industry?

Google’s launch of its Penguin and Panda algorithm updates sent a clear message to webmasters and marketing professionals: Google will not tolerate manipulative tactics or low-quality content in its search results. The result? A strategic, quality content strategy became the only option to achieve visibility in search results.

A content strategy is only effective, however, when executed by a strong brand, otherwise, that content achieves little reach, viewership or audience. Simultaneously, an effective content strategy is the road to building a brand. As a result, the focus is now on content and branding rather than manipulation and trickery.

2. Google is no longer just a search engine.

Yes, Google started as a search engine and it continues to serve that function. But Google has also become the leader in consumer-facing, data-oriented projects. Knowledge Graph, which attempts to figure out what searchers want, quickly supply the information and anticipate the next questions, is one example.

Many searches are location-based. “Vegan restaurants in Brooklyn”, “Spas in Brisbane”, “Where do I get designer shoes in Milan?” All these queries return search results that are peppered with extra information, from reviews to price ranges to maps. Throw in paid ads, which dominate the top spots in the rankings, and the top-ranking organic search result now appears a few hundred pixels down the page. That number-one ranking has lost a significant amount of value and visibility.

3. Links are key, but for a different reason.

Currently, it’s widely thought that the quantity and quality of inbound links to your domain and individual pages on your site are the primary factors in the ranking algorithm. Because of the resulting market for link buying and selling (which Google hates), Google might be tweaking its algorithms to give lower algorithmic weight to inbound links. However, even if links become irrelevant for SEO purposes, that doesn’t mean they won’t still be vital for your online-marketing campaign.

Before anyone knew what SEO was, they tried to get other websites to link to theirs for a different reason: referral traffic. How does John Doe discover your website if not via Google? Maybe he sees it mentioned on a blog. Maybe he found you on Twitter or Facebook. Or maybe he saw a sign you put up in the offline world. In every case, he arrived at your website through a “link.”

Ask yourself: If Google were not in the picture, would marketers still need to build links? If you’re in it for the long term, the answer is yes.

4. The future is “Now.”

Google Now is more than a mobile voice search challenging Apple’s Siri. It’s an entirely different mindset that pulls answers from Geo location, search history and preferences, as well as recent activity on Google products and other places.

It can search your calendar for birthday reminders. It can find your travel itinerary in your Gmail and spit out a weather report for where you’re headed. The emphasis is on serving answers, not web page results. The challenge is making yourself relevant enough in people’s lives so that you show up in search results.

Because most of this takes place on mobile devices, SEO also means optimizing websites to be mobile-friendly.

5. Approach online marketing with a “product” perspective.

If you have a bad product, you can sell a few units through excellent marketing. But this strategy not only won’t last long — it’ll kill your brand as the word spreads. This is why you should treat every aspect of your inbound marketing campaign as a product.

Consider content as your chief product. Content can be a blog post, an e-book, a video, an email newsletter, an info graphic or just about anything that’s going to be consumed by an audience.

As marketers and advertisers, we tend to value campaigns (the process) over the product. But the opposite philosophy is your ticket to long-lasting success. Apple has created great marketing campaigns, but their focus is always on creating the best products.

Conclusion.

The irony is that many folks who try hard to get that number-one ranking in the search results often fail, while brands and marketers who patiently and systematically follow these steps not only reach their goals, but stay there over the long haul.

Google has carefully crafted its strategy to encourage strong, quality content publication so its users don’t have to see the spammy content that used to litter its search results. Google’s future moves will be to further encourage this trend of quality and branding instead of manipulation and trickery.

Search marketing has grown in popularity as online search continues to evolve from a novelty to a standard feature in our everyday lives. Almost every business in the country, big or small and regardless of industry, has some kind of web presence, and everybody is competing for only a handful of positions at the top of search-engine results pages (SERPs).

Since larger companies — mega-corporations such as Walmart or Home Depot — already have millions of inbound links, decades of content, and a recurring base of online visitors, it’s no wonder why they generally appear in the top ranking positions when people search for commercial products. Regardless of what industry you’re in, you’ll always have at least one competitor who has been around longer and has tried harder than you have (allocated more budget and resources) to building their visibility on the web and in search engines.

So how can you, a small business with limited experience and resources, compete with that level of online domination?

Thankfully, search-engine optimization (SEO) is no longer about sheer volume. It’s not about who’s been on the web the longest, who has the most inbound links, or even who has the biggest library of great content. It’s about which page or website is the most relevant for the searcher. Knowing that, there are several strategies you can implement that can give you the edge over the bigger, badder competition.

1. Specialize in a niche.

One of the best things you can do as a small business is give yourself a niche focus. Instinctively, you might think that the better option for search visibility is to cover as many areas of expertise as possible. For example, if you work in heating, cooling, plumbing, roofing, construction and a dozen other home improvement topics, you’ll be able to appear in search engines for queries related to any of those keywords.

However, if you’re trying to take down your biggest competitors, it’s better to take more of a niche focus. Having several areas of specialization gives you relevance for a wide range of keywords, but your relevance for each of them is somewhat low. If you pour all your effort into one or a small handful of keywords, you’ll be able to achieve a much higher visibility.

For example, if you specialize in indoor plumbing, you might miss out on limited visibility for all those other home improvement keywords, but you’ll be the best in indoor plumbing.

2. Engage in a long-tail keyword strategy.

Long-tail keyword strategies try to accomplish a similar goal. In niche specialization, you sacrifice minimal relevance in a large volume of topics for maximum relevance in a much smaller volume of topics. With long-tail keywords, you’ll be sacrificing minimal ranking potential with highly popular keywords for maximum ranking potential with less popular keywords.

Long-tail keywords are extended phrases Google looks for, such as “tips for installing a toilet in an upstairs bathroom” instead of the much shorter, more popular “toilet installation.” Ranking highly for long-tail keywords is much easier than ranking high for shorter keywords, so even though they bring in less traffic, they’re still more valuable for small businesses to go after.

Fortunately, optimizing for long-tail keywords is easy. You can research ideal long-tail keywords to go after using Webmaster Tools, or you can just publish lots of great content — long-tail keyword phrases tend to appear naturally in the course of your writing. For further information on identifying and using long-tail keywords, see “The Rise of the Long-Tail Keyword for SEO” and “How to Find Long-Tail Keywords Once You’ve Identified Your Primary Keywords.”

3. Leverage locality for optimization.

Another way to beat the competition is by targeting a much more local audience. Local search is becoming more relevant and more important, so in today’s context, being the best barber shop in Houston is far better than being an OK barber shop on a national scale.

Even if your business does operate on a national (or international) level, you can still capture a niche market share and edge out your competition in at least one key area by optimizing for a specific local area. In this section, I’ll introduce a handful of specific strategies you can use to build your reputation and relevance in your given city.

Post excellent content on your website, using local-specific keywords, about your company’s attendance, and syndicate a press release about the opportunity for some high-authority and local-specific inbound links. This is one of the easiest ways to generate publicity and build some local-optimized content simultaneously.

Local reviews, on directory and aggregation sites such as Yelp or TripAdvisor, have become essential for local SEO. With Google’s Pigeon algorithm update earlier this year, Yelp and similar sites received a huge boost in priority. Now, sites with large volumes of positive reviews rank higher than similar sites with few or negative reviews. In fact, Yelp’s importance has increased so much that, in some cases, Yelp profiles are actually ranking higher than the official pages of the companies they represent.

What this means for small businesses is a new, key opportunity to jump in the rankings without worrying about producing content or building links. Instead, you can focus on cultivating strong, positive reviews from your customers. While Yelp explicitly forbids compensating your reviewers, or asking customers directly for reviews in any way, you can still encourage more reviews with Yelp stickers and occasional call-outs with a link on your social-media profiles.

Hyper-local content. Local search is getting more local, and taking advantage of that incoming trend could be the opportunity you need to crush a larger competitor — especially if that competitor operates in the same city as you.

Google is getting better at identifying and categorizing neighborhoods within a broader city, so you can take local search a step further by using neighborhood-specific keywords instead of just city and state names. Your potential success is determined by how Google views your neighborhood boundaries, so do some research before you begin.

4. Personalize your social engagement.

Aside from local search optimization, you can also increase your chances of overcoming steep competition by stepping up the “personal” factor in your brand strategy. Large businesses tend to lose a portion of their personalities once they hit a certain point in their growth, but being small and nimble gives you the advantage of giving each follower a more personal, humanized experience.

Nurture your following on social media, and you’ll attract more posts and followers, and the bigger and more active your social-media presence is, the higher you’ll rank in Google.

5. Become a recognized, authoritative content publisher.

There’s no shortcut to rise to the top of the search engine rankings, especially when there’s a massive competitor lingering on the scene. But with a strategy that leverages your geographic location and your agility, you can selectively overcome your competitors in specific key areas.

Give yourself the best odds by narrowing your topic and keyword focus and increasing your location-specific relevance. You might not rank for as many keywords as the bigger players, but you will be able to surpass them in relevance for your chosen focal points.

Ensuring people regularly visit and engage with your website is a critical requirement in the new digital landscape.

As the CEO of a digital-marketing firm, I’m constantly asked by friends, acquaintances and total strangers what is something they can do to get more eyeballs on their website. The reasons why vary. Everything from improving conversions, increasing traffic, boosting SEO rankings, lowering bounce rate and or increasing customer’s time on site is mentioned.

Luckily for them, there is a simple tool that can improve every one of these categories and is easy to implement: a curated blog.

Having a blog on your website is practically a necessity in the online world. The search engines have established that rich and engaging content is an essential piece in their ranking algorithms. Additionally, customers are demanding more and more from companies as they become better educated and more informed.

Giving your customers information for free on your blog is a great way to satisfy this demand. With regards to customer interactions metrics such as: time on site, bounce rate and conversions, a blog can help all of these aspects. And with strong calls to action and great designs, a blog can also be an excellent conversion tool for your business. (One of our clients, who implemented a blog a little over a year ago, saw an increase in their organic traffic of almost 200 percent.)

So, what are some of the strategies you can implement to see similar results?

Have calls to action.

A call to action is exactly what it sounds like — it’s a call to your customers to take an action. This can be a button that asks them to subscribe to your newsletter or it could be a little bit of text weaved into a post reminding your reader about your company’s services or products.

The bottom line is that customers react to being told what to do. Every form of successful advertising incorporates calls to action. So, place them strategically on your blog and within your posts.

Provide real value.

Your customers want to be entertained and informed. Writing about why you’re the best at this or that is anything but entertaining. Instead, give them real value. For instance, write how-to posts on questions that your customers regularly ask. Or follow the news about your industry and then give your opinion on large issues and how they’ll affect your customers.

As I mentioned in point above, you can still ensure that your customers know what you do by giving them a friendly reminder, but don’t beat them over the head with your sales pitch. Give first, then you’ll receive.

Images and titles.

There are hundreds of theories as to why certain posts do better than others. Yes, the content within the post plays a big role but so do images. A post is judged immediately by its title and the image associated with it. So make sure to not only think about catch headlines but also catchy images. Images showing emotions such as people laughing or yelling cause instinctive reactions and may produce more clicks.

Additionally, the title needs to grab your customer’s attention. Teases, lists and questions will all cause your customers to click on your post.

Creating a great blog does take time and effort. And the more time you spend on posting and responding to comments, the more benefits your blog will produce. But rest assured that there is almost nothing more impactful or more cost effective that you could do with that time.

Let us get one thing straight! Google alone considers more than 200 different factors before deciding the ranking of websites in a search engine result page, or SERP. One of the most important factors in this category is the security of the website. Your website’s SERP will depend on how much secure your online platform is for the users. The search engines like Google have been very intuitive in this aspect. It checks whether the website is safeguarded or not before so that the SEO ranking cannot be manipulated.

The website ranking depends on many factors, as mentioned earlier. In fact, search engines will pick up those websites which are secure and safeguarded for users first. It has been found that two websites with similar infrastructure, one having SSL certification and the other does not, the first one will get a better advantage in terms of SEO rankings.

What is SSL certification?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. As you can easily understand what it stands for from the name, SSL adds an extra layer of fortified security, protecting the information of visitors and users of an online portal from cyber anomalies. This layer is responsible for the encryption of all data passing between servers and users so that it can’t be decoded by cybercriminals and the entire affair remains private.

Since July 2018, Google has started to alert users regarding websites that are not secure for using when they lack SSL certificate. Google, as per StatCounter, is the most significantly used browser that accounts for 58.94% of online searches worldwide. The next contender is Safari, with 13.74% of searching activities enlisted. This means that a secure sign of approval from the leading search engines regarding SSL certification will lead to an impressive SEO ranking of your website. The Google SEO certification demands a SSL encryption certificate for an imminent site ranking boost.

Benefits of SSL Encryption Certificates for SEO

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the lifeline of all websites. Those websites which cater to online businesses will need SEO so as to find out the competition and design better digital strategies to get the page ranking higher. If the page ranking falls, the website will not appear on the top search engine result pages (SERPs) and definitely, the visibility of the website will reduce to a minimum. Hence, organic SEO will need the assurance of SSL certification to boost the SERP rankings.

Here are the reasons why good websites have SSL encryption and how it helps to escalate organic SEO ranking.

SEO Boost

As we have discussed earlier about SSL certificates, let us find out the consequences if your website does not have this feature. Once a user will attempt to visit your website after searching it on Google Chrome, the message ‘your connection to this site is not fully secure’ will automatically appear before the content of the page is displayed. It means that the user will feel skeptical about entering your business domain online.

This feature can be exceptionally used as an immense strength to win the competition. You can now easily understand how important this factor is for you to escalate the SEO ranking of your web presence. Remember that creating SSL security for your website will not launch it to the top search engine pages, but it will definitely aid you to elevate the rankings to a considerable level. This action has to be paired or accompanied by other SEO functions. The ranked boost transition will happen in no time when the entire SEO operation is done in parallel with SSL certification.

A survey done by Quantcast suggests that as little as 0.1% websites have shifted to a secure platform using SSL certification. In fact, 1.9% of the top-rated 1,000,000 websites use HTTPS version so as to make the user data secure from cyber anomalies. A MOZ poll also revealed that 17.24% of websites have added SSL, 24.90% were thinking of doing it and 57.85% has no plans yet to perform. This poll survey was done back in 2014. It means that the situation must be a little better now. Although there is a huge growth in the number of websites hosted, the acceptance of SSL certification has increased too. You can now easily understand that SSL certification can make your website better than any other competitor website. Search engines will automatically redirect these websites to a search engine result page.

More Secure Platform Means More User Trust
These days, users are also becoming more aware of the necessity of user information safety. Web browsers signify when they are entering an unsafe website, and Google will automatically redirect those websites which are absolutely secure for Chrome users. For instance, if you are using your credit card information online, the SSL will encode this information and send to the server. The server will use secure HTTPs to build a connection and respond back. During this to-and-fro transmission, security is maintained so that the hackers cannot steal your sensitive information.

This is where you can build more trust among the users. Smart web browsers will show your certification, and users will definitely feel safer entering your website and making transactions. Automatically, traffic will get diverted to your website as the search engine page rankings will escalate. Your website will win an extra edge in the competition. SSL certification is not only good for the users but also a fabulous strength to increase your website’s SEO ranking and page visibility.

Traffic and Conversion Rate

Would you like to take a ride in a zip-line with a minimum safety setup? This is what happens in the mind of visitors who encounter the message of insecure connection from browsers once they enter an insecure domain. Only the SSL certificate will secure search engines and will not show the message that deflects organic traffic from your website.

On adding SSL security, your website will become extremely secure for your visitors. The target audience will also find that its information is safe and sound within the servers. It means that a lead will become a regular and then transform into a loyal customer. Google and other search engines pick up these small yet significant factors too. Once the search engines find that a group of users is particularly visiting your website, the web traffic rank will automatically rise. The search engines will detect the trust your website has gained by providing a safe and secure platform online for the users to find services.

Google Chrome has taken a step further by shaming the unencrypted websites and mocking the lack of security for users. Opt for SSL certification to boost your SEO ranking and make your way to the top result pages.

Tie-Breaker for Two Same-Ranked Websites

Google revealed in 2015 that when a website’s criteria matches perfectly with another, it is the HTTPs and SSL certification that will make the difference. The web browsers will definitely prefer the more secure website so that users can remain protected. Although the ranking boost will be minor in terms of other SEO features, in the future, SSL certification and HTTPS will become a part and parcel of business websites.

In fact, 40% of all the organic search results displayed by Google contain at least one HTTPS website. The aware users try to find the most secured websites to gather information or find a product. The encryption method is extremely necessary in today’s era.

User Experience Redefined

As mentioned earlier, the Google’s search rankings will be manipulated if an SSL encryption feature is introduced. Users will visit your website and find a secure platform to use. The informed and aware users will find SSL certificates displayed by Chrome and other web browsers, thus creating a new dimension for better user experience.

As per a statistical study, over 84% of users will leave a website then and there when they fail to find a security certificate or when the browser displays the insecure connection message. Switching to Google HTTPS will automatically enhance the page ranking, as well as the user experience.

Do mobile apps need to be secure too?

Mobile applications are often connected to primary servers to provide dynamic data such as login/authentication, a database query, and so on. In general, the SSL certificate is even needed when you’re planning to build a Mobile app for your e-commerce website and for that you need to develop REST API for a secure connection between web & mobile application development. To ensure that your mobile app is just as secure as your website, you should search from the top mobile app development companies that can implement security for you.

Final Words

When converting leads to customers, SSL SEO plays an important role. Web browsers are becoming smarter day by day, so websites need to become more efficient and full of features. A GlobalSign study suggests that more than 84% of visits bounce back when they find the connection is not secure. This is the time to take the right decision for a perfect future.

SSL SEO is the dynamic duo you need for the online presence of your business. Remember that the users are everything; it takes time to create trust. Using the features of HTTPS SEO, that trust can be established and fortified. Enjoy an excellent conversion rate of leads to loyal customers by using an SSL certificate the right away.

The post SSL and SEO: Does Having a Secure Website Help with Organic Ranking? appeared first on Webcare Technologies.
