Google Keep – Evernote rival

Google on Wednesday announced Google Keep, a note-taking service similar to Evernote, for both the Web and Android 4.0+ (Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean) devices. You can try the service out now for yourself at Drive.Google.com/Keep or download the Android app from the Google Play Store.

Google describes Keep as a service that lets you “save ideas and organize to-dos the moment they happen by creating notes, lists, photos and voice recordings right from your phone” (don’t worry, it also works on tablets). You can access, edit, and create new notes on the Web from the above website, and furthermore, Google says you’ll be able to do the same directly from your Google Drive account “in the coming weeks.”

Keep also lets you speak to it: the service transcribes voice memos for you automatically. Since we’re talking about Google here, there’s also a “super-fast search” function so you can find the note you wrote, read it, and then either archive or delete it.

Just two days ago, news of Keep leaked out as Google apparently launched the service prematurely and then promptly took it down less than half an hour later. At the time of writing, Keep is having issues (likely due to the heavy load) but Google has announced it in multiple places, so we’re confident this isn’t another slip up.

Here’s what Keep looks like on the Web (if you’re lucky enough not to get the message “Oops! An error occurred. Please click here to reload the page.”):

Any changes you make save almost instantly. When you visit the site again, you start off exactly where you left off.

Here is Keep on Android (you can drag your notes around and choose the color for each):

As you can see above in the left screenshot, it’s a fairly clean and straightforward app. The right screenshot meanwhile shows that Google has integrated it with the Android lock screen (this widget is only available for devices running Android 4.2+).

Google says it is trying to solve the problem of not having your notes and reminders wherever you are. A mobile app launch on its own platform naturally makes sense:

In user interface design, a modal window is a child window that requires users to interact with it before they can return to operating the parent application, thus preventing the workflow on the application main window. Modal windows are often called heavy windows or modal dialogs because the window is often used to display a dialog box.

Modal windows are commonly used in GUI systems to command user awareness and to display emergency states. On the Web, they are often used to show images in detail.

Use cases

Frequent uses of modal windows include:

Drawing attention to vital pieces of information. This use has been criticised as ineffective because users are bombarded with too many dialog boxes, and habituate to simply clicking “Close”, “Cancel”, or “OK” without reading or understanding the message.
Blocking the application flow until information required to continue is entered, as for example a password in a login process. Another example are file dialogs to open and save files in an application.
Collecting application configuration options in a centralized dialog. In such cases, typically the changes are applied upon closing the dialog, and access to the application is disabled while the edits are being made.
Warning that the effects of the current action are not reversible. This is a frequent interaction pattern for modal dialogs, but it is also criticised by usability experts as being ineffective for its intended use (protection against errors in destructive actions) due to habituation. Actually making the action reversible (providing an “undo” option) is recommended instead.

Google set to launch $99 Nexus tablet this quarter, report says

Google might soon launch a cheaper Nexus tablet.

The company is currently working with Taiwan-based Quanta Computer to produce a $99 Nexus tablet boasting a single-core processor that will launch by the end of this year, Digitimes is reporting today, citing sources. According to the tech-news blog’s sources, the tablet isn’t being developed in partnership with Asus, the company that helped Google build its Nexus 7. The cheaper tablet is, at least right now, separate from the Nexus 7 lineup.

Digitimes reported on the possibility of a new Nexus tablet last month, saying that Google was prepping a version that would cost $99, as well as another that would retail for $199. At that time, the blog indicated that the device would be called the Nexus 7 and would be developed in partnership with Asus. Its sources seem to indicate now that neither of those are claims are true.

The cheaper Nexus report comes against the backdrop of the possibility of Google launching a more expensive Nexus 7. U.K. retailer Argos today released a Christmas Gift Guide showcasing a 32GB Nexus 7. The ad, which was discovered by The Next Web, lists the device for 199 British pounds ($323).

Google’s Nexus 7, which launched earlier this year, is currently only available in 8GB and 16GB flavors. The 8GB option retails for $199, while the 16GB option sells for $249.

Argos’ leak comes just a day after the 32GB Nexus 7 showed up on Staples Advantage, a retail site for business users. That device was listed for $248.37.

It’s no surprise that Google is seemingly working on improvements to its Nexus line. Apple yesterday announced that it will be holding a media event on Tuesday that is likely to showcase the long-rumored iPad Mini. That device, which will reportedly come with a 7.85-inch screen, is designed to take on devices like the Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD this holiday-shopping season.
