Do you guys use it?

Is it easy enough to setup without using the SSH/Telnet console at all? I am thinking about purchasing a Cisco 3550 EMI

Is it free download/use?

Thanks

The prices seem unusually good, from what I've seen before, but I can't find much said about them here -- one negative comment on their servers' stability and noise level, one positive comment from an eBay buyer, and one advising in general against companies that sell custom servers assembled from generic hardware.

Still, I feel like since it's all commodity hardware, it's just a matter of the company's reliability, since you could probably get identical machines built by any number of other companies. Has anyone else had any experience with them?

I'm looking for a reliable KVM over IP system to use in a lights-out data center environment. I have a few different types of servers, all of which came with their own KVMoIP setup, aka DRAC and iLO which have worked only so so since their deployment. The HP iLO has performed absolutely flawlessly but the DRAC on the other hand has been nothing less than a complete nightmare.

I'm looking for a KVM over IP system that we can connect to multiple servers, mainly Dell, that is 100% reliable and completely stable. Not something that will be giving Java errors randomly when you actually need it to work.

So far I've came across the Raritan Dominion KX II which looks pretty promising. Is there any other KVM over IP systems or manufactures that I should look into? Has anyone used this and can you comment about its reliability?

Who has decent Transit in Frankfurt (Europe)?

I am currently looking to buy some new transit for my ISP which is already multi-homed. Our new POP will be in Frankfurt and these will be my needs:

- 1 GBIT/s IP Transit (probably 2.5 GBIT in 6-12 months)
- native IPv6 would be a nice-to-have feature
- good peerings in Europe (I don't want to cross the Atlantic Ocean and come back, just to reach someone who is next door)
- Blackhole Server, in case of DDoS
- Price < 6000 EUR (for 1 GBIT/s)

I have narrowed down my selection to the following Providers, with a few comments:

- Cogent:
     + extremely low price
     + very fast support
     + blackhole server
     - poor peerings in Europe (many traceroute tests of major EU sites go through their NYC/JFK Pop
     - no IPv6

- Global Crossing:

     + good peerings in Europe
     + native IPv6 support
     + blackhole server
     - no quote yet (what could I expect?)

- NTT:

     - no information so far. Feedback would be welcome

- Telia:

     + Fast support
     + some good peerings
     - very expensive (> 8500 EUR)
     - no so present in our region, too much scandinavia

- Lambdanet:

+ good peerings in central europe
     + native IPv6 support
     - good in Europe, but not much in the US/Asia

- HE:

     + very good price
     - not so present in Europe, only few pops

My preference would be Global Crossing, but I still do not have their quote. What price could I expect from them (EUROS please :))?

What are your opinions about these carriers? I am not necessarily looking for the lowest price, but neither for the highest price. Since we are multihomed we do not care so much about network outage, but good peerings nearby are an absolute must.

Thanks.

Metro Ethernet vs. DS3

Say I have my own office to start building out my own "mini" data center.

If I wanted a lot of bandwidth for the most reasonable cost, how do one go about buying bandwidth from various providers? What is Metro-Ethernet vs. say a DS3? I know there is Fractional DS3 (6 to 45mb/s) and then Ethernet services up to GigE. I'd rather not mess with BGP right now either.

If I am looking at 15-20mb/Sec of bandwidth, what would be a good route to go? My budget is about $1500/month for bandwidth and IP Addresses (I need 2 Full Class-C IP Spaces). I also want to be able to turn up speed as needed without a lot of hassle.

Is this a reasonable budget? And where would be a good place to start? Just call up like Level 3 or am I too small potatoes to even deal with?

Thanks

What are you guys using for cheap storage for backups? Tape won't work for me because I have a lot of data to be incremented every night and it all needs to be accessible 24x7 without my intervention. From what I understand about tapes (never used them) they aren't the best for getting what you need quickly.

Right now I am able to get cost per gigabyte down to 47 cents per useable gigabyte (factoring in two drives lost to a raid 6 and 90% format overhead), or about 37 cents per gigabyte for total capacity. I can achieve this by throwing a nice quad core xeon and like 4gb of memory and a nice 3ware card into a 24 drive bay supermicro system, and have the os run on a separate raid 1 on a separate card. It would be a pretty nice setup.

On the other hand, I looked at dell's powervault or whatever the storage devices are, the MD series, and things worked out to be 50.3 cents per useable gigabyte, or 42.3 cents per gigabyte for total capacity. And thats headless -- not including the actual server to interface with the 30 disk array. So that makes no sense financially, AND thats assuming that I am able to order it blank with no drives and buy my own drives, avoiding dells ridiculous 650-700$ pricing for terabyte drives.

Is there a better way to achieve low cost storage, that doesn't exactly have to be lightning fast? I only need to run rsyncs to it. I can't imagine that building a server with the array inside of it is cheaper than buying a stand alone enclosure or system for storage...not even iscsi or anything, just eSATA or something.

Whats your current solution?

Hey there...

So I am trying out all sorts of new drives and raid card adapters because I am finding the 3ware's I have been faithfully using to really suck lately.

We are testing them against areca and adaptec (although I really hate areca from prior bad experience)...

We are using bonnie right now... of course we plan to play around with xen, a couple of domains, prime95, some dd's and then run bonnie too... kind of a stress test.

Wondering what others are doing?
