Microsoft’s new Office 2010 brings Office back from the dead (tons of videos)

When I left Microsoft about four years ago, I remember Steve Gillmor telling everyone that Office was dead.

I sort of went along with that, after all I was leaving Microsoft partially because I thought that Microsoft didn’t have an interesting product pipeline and wasn’t going to get the Internet for the second time. Only this time I didn’t sense Bill Gates screaming “turn toward the Internet.” For the most part I was right, at least until this year.

Remember, when a blogger says something is “dead” it just means that it isn’t interesting anymore and/or is potentially going to get disrupted. Well, it’s clear that Office DID get disrupted, if you watch today’s videos that I’ve posted about Microsoft’s Office 2010, being shown off today at Microsoft’s Partner Conference (it won’t be out until first half of 2010).

Who disrupted Office? Apple did. Look at the new PowerPoint and you’ll see Microsoft telling Steve Jobs to “stay off our lawn.”

Who else disrupted Office? Google did. Look at the new Web collaboration features and you’ll see Microsoft telling Eric Schmidt to “stay off our lawn.”

What happened in the four years since I left Microsoft?

1. The amount of strategy taxes have gone down. What are strategy taxes? When a Microsoft product team, like Office, needs to support exclusively technology from another product team, like, say, Internet Explorer or Windows. Here they started the demo in Firefox, which tells me that a good chunk of strategy taxes have been thrown out the window.
2. Microsoft is finally figuring out how to deal with Google. Is Microsoft’s strategy perfect? No, but it’s good enough to stop the bleeding in a range of areas like search and, now, office productivity.
3. Innovation is back. I see lots of things that are damn cool in this suite. Think that copy and paste was over? Watch the video about how Microsoft improved copy and paste. Think email couldn’t be improved? Watch the Outlook 2010 video and see just how many new features are there.
4. The Web is finally front and center on the Office team’s mind. Are they completely there yet? No. Will Google continue to be interesting for a range of tasks? Yes. But Microsoft just said to the marketplace that they won’t be outplayed on the Web and that’s pretty huge.
5. It’s not Office alone that will rejuvenate Microsoft. Bing is coming on strong. Xbox is rocking and rolling. Windows 7 looks absolutely superb and is blowing holes in Apple’s strategy, especially at the low end of the market which is much more important this year due to the crappy economy. One area where Microsoft still doesn’t look strong? Mobile. But if the Windows Mobile team makes a few more shifts toward the web it will be a key player there, too.
6. Microsoft has the time to turn its big boat that other companies don’t have. Microsoft has 14 — can you count them all? — billion dollar businesses. I don’t know of another company with that luxury.
7. Microsoft’s R&D is resurgent and is feeling its oats. I’ll have more to say about that later when I get a video up I made in Microsoft’s Cambridge R&D lab last week. But I see lots of things in this Office that came out of Microsoft’s R&D department, which has now been in a great new building for more than a year and is expanding world wide.

Anyway, what caught my eye? I will upgrade just for the new Outlook features. Watch that video to see why. Also the new Web features might get me back from Google Docs. That will be a tougher sale, but you can see tons of places where Microsoft has run way ahead of Google and Zoho here.

Keep in mind, though, that Microsoft’s Office never was dead as a business. In fact I’m pretty sure that in dollar volumes Microsoft sells more today than it did four years ago when it got “boring.” This new version looks like it’ll ensure that Microsoft Office is a successful business for years to come. Some things, it won’t be out until first half of 2010, which gives Google time to respond. Other things? We don’t know pricing and haven’t yet seen all the features revealed or demoed.

Even more fun is that they took the little blue bird that my long time collaborator on fun design and illustration projects Phil and I drew and made it into a 3D animation. Love it!

Cloud computing is changing the way we provision hardware and software for on-demand capacity fulfillment. Lately I have been thinking about the ways on-demand servers, storage, and CDN s are changing the way we develop web applications and make business decisions. Gone are the days of idle CPU s, empty memory, or unused drive space. The cloud charges us for what we use as we use it (assuming capacity is available). In this post I will provide an overview of the cloud hosting landscape with a particular focus on cloud utilization by web companies. I will walk through a managed infrastructure stack and examine a few major business targets.

The hardware

In 1943 Thomas J. Watson of IBM famously proclaimed "there is a world market for maybe five computers." Today we look back and laugh at such a proclamation but the statement really did hold up for approximately 10 years. Into the 1950s IBM designed computers for a possible market of 20 companies, of which 5 were expected to purchase such a machine. In 1953 IBM was pleasantly surprised to find 18 of 20 companies purchased the IBM 701, provind the business of back office processing and a new division for the tabulating giant.

Last week Rick Rashid of Microsoft was quoted as saying around 20 percent of the world's servers are sold to a handful of companies: Microsoft, Google, Yahoo!, and Amazon. Three of those four companies are cloud resellers, renting small slices of their compute farms to businesses all over the world. 198 megawatt datacenters may be the new mainframe, with consumption units charged in minutes and bytes much like the time sharing relationships of the 1970s.

IBM again caught my interest last year with its Kittyhawk project from Jonathan Appavoo, Volkmar Uhlig, and Amos Waterland in New York. IBM is currently researching ways to repurpose the massively parallel Blue Gene supercomputers for the datacenters of the Web. It's possible your future web application will run on a computer originally designed for gene sequencing and nuclear weapons testing.

Hardware and data operations are again consolidating towards major players. These specialist providers are building at a scale and specialization most web businesses can't match. On-demand infrastructure of the cloud makes it cheaper and more efficient to outsource needed operational function to teams of experts already keeping some of the largest web companies in the world running every day.

The platforms

Microsoft and Google are the newest entrants into the cloud computing arena, focusing their efforts their respective programming languages of expertise. Microsoft's Windows Azure services platform will likely be the best platform for C# and ASP.Net development as it is tuned by the creators of .Net, IIS , and SQL Server. Google has similarly applied its expertise in the Python language and distributed web nodes to its Google App Engine product. The App Engine cloud is tuned by top contributors to the Python language including its BDFL , Guido van Rossum. App Engine utilizes custom Google software, Google Front End and Megastore, for web serving and storage. Cloud developers on either platform are using a similar set of hardware and software as the proven web-scale platforms of Live.com and Google. I expect Google App Engine will add support for Java in the near-future, their second major language offering and the most popular language among Google's own services.

Language specialists are building managed stacks on top of generic cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services' EC2 . Engine Yard sells a custom, managed AMI optimized for the Ruby language and its Rails framework. Rackspace's Mosso subsidiary and others optimize for the latest versions of PHP + MySQL, attracting performance-minded applications in search of a tuned cloud instance. I am not aware of any major language contributors of Ruby or PHP employed at either company but the platforms do attempt to find their own niche among a broad offering of scalable hosting providers.

Amazon's EC2 is the most well-known cloud computing provider and, as previously mentioned, the baseline service for other companies building value-added solutions. The AMI , a machine image formatted deployment in the Amazon cloud, is the basic building block of EC2 virtualization and the primary interaction point of Amazon's customers. Amazon resells premium operating system and application packages on behalf of companies such as Microsoft, IBM, and Oracle but it's possible such specializations will instead be absorbed by the software publishers themselves as they roll out their own hosted clouds (such as Azure or IBM Blue Cloud).

The cloud computing software stack is trending towards an integrated, managed experience maintained by some of the top contributors to each programming language and related components. More generic cloud platforms will need to stay up-to-date with managed technologies on their platform and/or establish a strong reseller relationship to more specialized cloud managers.

The managed cloud stack

Managed cloud providers handle an entire stack of infrastructure needed to deliver web applications at scale. A solid cloud computing environment abstracts the basics of a computing environment away from the implementors and lets them focus on adding value with each new application. Managed cloud hosting providers need to offer the following basic layers to stay relevant in a web developer's world.

High availability

Any web application needs to be available to legitimate visitors from all over the world. A true cloud creates spans the entire globe, defeating the speed of light on behalf of its customers with a server point of presence in multiple simultaneous locations. The cloud provider needs to effectively receive and route incoming requests to the appropriate virtualized application instance on behalf of its customers.

Google and Microsoft replicate each application instance to multiple physical locations. AT&T Synaptic Hosting spans multiple locations for its enterprise customers.

Security

Web applications should be protected from intrusion and abuse at the network layer. In a cloud computing world application security is a lot like click fraud in advertising: every bad action carries a marginal cost. Cloud providers need to guard customers against potential external abuse and intrusion.

Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have their eyes on many incoming requests each day. Google serves App Engine requests off the same hardware handling Google Front End, keeping bad requests away from search, ads, and your app s.

Stable, efficient OS

Web applications rely on a stable, efficient operating system to interface with hardware, manage filesystems, and allocate resources. The cloud server operating system is a stripped down version of standard installations without a need for direct hard drive interfaces or other peripherals.

Amazon EC2 highlights the operating system behind every machine image. Older versions of Fedora and Windows Server are the default "quick start" options available to each new account. Google and Microsoft clouds run on custom operating systems tailored for web use. Windows Azure is a stripped-down version of the latest Windows Server. Google runs a Linux-based OS tuned by its infrastructure team.

Programming Language Business Logic

Every managed cloud platform includes a dynamic language virtual machine and an appropriate web services gateway. Language functions too closely associated with the parent operating system and its libraries are stripped away, leaving only a pure operating environment for a machine interpreter. External dependencies such as GNU tools and custom compilers will not function within the cloud language abstraction layer. Cloud services bundle a dynamic language runtime into an easily spawned instance for standard and efficient interpretation across many application instances.

Google App Engine supports most functions of the Python language with additional support for the Django framework, WebOb, and PyYAML. Developers may replace these built-in libraries with newer or customized versions at an additional performance and usage cost. App Engine passes web requests into the programming language environment through the Web Server Gateway Interface .

The cloud client layer

Attached storage

Cloud applications don't operate in a vacuum. Dynamic applications persist their application state and logic through database and file storage. In the cloud world the database and the file server are cloud services unto themselves, operating in an isolated and specialized layer. This isolation makes the storage layer swappable from the rest of the cloud stack and presents new opportunities for competition.

Static files fall into two major categories based on their planned consumption. Files under 1 MB in size can be consumed by most clients in a single request, matching the expected simple request/response model of the platform. Files over 1 MB in size need to be broken into more manageable parts, or ranges, for a sequenced download. Static cloud storage can be broken up into differing solutions by file size or file type, providing the best possible solution for the storage and delivery task at hand.

Google App Engine offers static file storage separate from its dynamic runtime. App Engine supports up to 1,000 files and has a 10 MB HTTP response limit.

Amazon Web Services offers static file serving through its Simple Storage Service ( S3 ) origin server and CloudFront CDN services. Amazon allows private and public file storage and can even charge individual users of third-party services for their use through DevPay.

Attached storage is by far the most diverse service offering for companies evaluating a specialized solution. I prefer storage providers with widely supported file management API s, smart settings for MIME types and caching HTTP headers, and a primary functionality of serving files our to the worldwide web. I expect popular storage providers will bundle more CDN services in the future through an exclusive up-sell partnership. I also expect a new class of storage middleware optimized for minimizing files, cleaning up images, or transcoding video will set up new programmable front-ends backed by popular storage providers.

Database storage

Databases are the preferred way of persisting structured data powering web applications. Cloud service providers have tuned and rewritten database functionality for the cloud, opening up new opportunities for scalable data services across multiple dynamic application instances. Cloud databases are distributed, replicated, and largely transactional. Cloud databases can be separated from the rest of the cloud stack through RESTful API s between different vendors but there is a definite latency advantage to coupling of data and its interpreter.

Microsoft offers SQL Server as a web service as part of the Azure services stack. Google App Engine offers Megastore, an abstraction layer on top of BigTable, as a service API within an App Engine instance or as a separate remote API . Amazon's SimpleDB brings together EC2 processing with S3 data storage. Greenplum offers PostgreSQL as a stand-alone cloud offering.

Cloud databases are typically more limited in functionality than their local counterparts. App Engine returns up to 1000 results. SimpleDB times out within 5 seconds. Joining records from two tables in a single query breaks databases optimized for scale. App Engine offers specialized storage and query types such as geographical coordinates.

The database layer of a cloud instance can be abstracted as a separate best-of-breed layer within a cloud stack but developers are most likely to use the local solution for both its speed and simplicity.

Cache

Our web applications receive multiple requests for the exact same resource. We should be able to place a pre-assembled version of our web pages, images, and XHR data into a local memory cache for fast serving on multiple requests. On our own servers we frequently use memcached, Varnish, Squid, etc. The cloud stack should include a storage cache as its first layer of request processing.

Google App Engine includes a memcache API written by Brad Fitzpatrick, creator of memcached. Windows Azure will supposedly support Velocity caching in the near future.

Cloud consumers

The target market of a cloud computing platform will affect its stack completeness, feature sets, and future support. Cloud terminology seems to be thrown around as a magical buzzword but there are major usage cases emerging.

Web application developers

New web applications start small and may sometimes experience exponential growth on a worldwide basis. Web developers evaluating the cloud stack are likely starting from scratch without the concerns of switching from a legacy system or alternate implementation.

Cloud computing abstracts tiered architecture, operations planning, and other nuances from companies specializing in bring new ideas to market quickly. Web developers prefer a cloud stack tuned for fast web performance. Geographically distributed dynamic instances are important at least as an upgrade option to protect a new business from a rewrite at varying levels of scale.

I believe cloud providers offering a complete managed stack will attract web development specialists to their platform. Google App Engine, Mosso, and Windows Azure compete in this space.

Back office tasks

Enterprise applications are moving out of the local server closet and into the cloud. Medium- to large-sized companies are replacing in-house maintenance of machines and applications with software and infrastructure as a service. Project management, employee tracking, payroll, and many other common functions have made their way into the software-as-a-service realm. More customized applications will migrate to cloud hosting and take their place alongside the anchor tenants of the groupware and collaboration suites.

Windows Azure, Salesforce's Force.com, and Google App Engine show strong promise as integrated back office add-ons. Microsoft and Google already have a solid footing in enterprise groupware services through Exchange Online and Google Apps respectively. Force.com can be closely tied to the popular Salesforce CRM application for sales and marketing teams.

More generic back office functions can operate on any cloud hosting provider with a properly maintained disk image. A new class of hosting provider operates as an abstraction layer between multiple clouds by maintaining the appropriate images and deployment scripts for any given task. Companies such as Aptana, CohesiveFT, RightScale, and many others span multiple cloud hosting providers with a single management interface. Cloud management companies can monitor multiple providers and create spot pricing market for computing resources.

Back office solutions represent the largest possible growth area for cloud hosting providers. Platforms with strong existing anchor tenants can add on new services combining software-as-a-service and infrastructure-as-a-service. Generic cloud hosting providers will likely be tapped for general tasks directly or though a cloud management layer.

Microsoft is promoting its cloud hosting solutions through its partner channels. Microsoft partners receive a 12% commission on the first year of revenues and 6% commission on all future revenues. Google offers a 20% discount to Google Apps Authorized Resellers over the life of the account.

Excess capacity

Hosting solutions need to scale up to meet peak demand. Peak demand could occur for an hour each day, one day a year (Black Monday in the retail sector), or one month out of twelve (college basketball playoffs). Cloud computing lets businesses pay only for what they use when they use it. Servers are not sitting around in your datacenter depreciating in value and consuming resources while you wait for peak load to occur.

Excess capacity needs may be predictable and cyclical, allowing a business to integrate cloud computing into their computing workflow with ease. Generic cloud computing platforms offer the best migration costs as businesses clone their own local machine images for execution in a cloud computing environment.

Disaster recovery

Business operations need to stay online when catastrophe strikes. An earthquake in California, a hurricane in Florida or Texas, or a power outage anywhere in the world could knock your business offline instantly. A hot backup in the cloud spins up when your primary site is down. An on-demand backup facility is a lot cheaper than physical investments as companies invest in contingency planning.

Amazon Web Services recently introduced reserved machine instances for companies who must be absolutely sure they will be able to operate in an environment of strained cloud capacity. Reserved instances receive priority allocation of cloud resources in exchange for an upgrade fee and lower monthly usage charges. Reserved instances are the VIP treatments of the cloud hosting world.

Demand response programs are common in utility sectors such as electricity. Businesses can opt to be the last ones kicked off the grid in a low-capacity environment in exchange for higher consumption costs.

Summary

Cloud computing is picking up steam and there are a few early winners. The most promising solutions from large vendors are still in a technology preview stage but should be open for general use by the end of the year. Startups developing new applications should pick the best solutions provider based on the strength of their stack offering and usage pricing. Some cloud layers can easily be abstracted to best-of-breed solutions.

Facebook's growing infrastructure spend

On Thursday BusinessWeek reported Facebook is seeking new financing for its data center operation growth in 2009. Facebook continues to add new members and their associated content at an extremely fast pace, with most new growth coming from international markets. Facebook needs to expand its abilities to serve these markets by bolstering current infrastructure offerings and cutting latency to its members through new international points of presence. In this post I will take a deeper look at Facebook's current computing infrastructure and related expenses and examine likely new areas of investment in 2009.

Facebook members

Facebook currently has over 160 million members in its top 30 markets. Facebook enjoys a 24% market penetration across all 30 countries, including complete domination in Chile and Turkey, where 76% and 66% of all Internet users are members of Facebook. Facebook member numbers are taken from Facebook.com; total Internet users for each country is as reported by the CIA World Factbook.

Facebook's current infrastructure serves North America with minimal latency. Future expansion into Europe and southeast Asia are likely as Facebook tries to expand its international audience.

Data centers

Facebook currently operates out of four data centers in the United States: three on the west coast and one on the east coast. Facebook leases at least 45,000 square feet of data center space.

Switch & Data's PAIX at 529 Bryant Street in Palo Alto is just around the corner from the Facebook offices and a long-time home to Facebook servers. It's unclear how much of the 100,000 square-foot, liquid-cooled data center is currently occupied by Facebook.

Facebook has been with Terremark's NAP West in Santa Clara since November 2005. Facebook originally leased 10,000 square feet but may have grown larger over the years. Facebook is still listed as a Terremark customer in Santa Clara but the company might be consolidating its operations into its new local data center.

Facebook geo-distributed its web operations in 2008 with DuPont Fabros' ACC4 in Ashburn, Virginia. Facebook leased 10,000 square feet in 2007 and occupied the space in 2008 after extensive reworking of the Facebook backend. Facebook shares ACC4 with MySpace, Google, and other competitors.

In January 2009 Facebook moved into its first exclusive data center, Digital Realty Trust's 1201 Comstock Street in Santa Clara. The 24,000 square feet of data center space operates at a PUE of 1.35, a respectable mark against reported 1.22 marks for Google and Microsoft. Facebook leases the center from Digital Realty as its sole occupant.

Facebook is rumored to be adding an additional 20,000 square feet of data center space in Ashburn, Virgnia in DuPont Fabros' ACC5. Facebook is expected to move into ACC5 in September 2009 and place new servers online by the end of the year.

Facebook recently announced an international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland that will include "operations support" across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. A European data center is a likely expansion point for Facebook as they try to solidify their European offerings.

Server loans

Facebook paid for part of its infrastructure expansion through specialized debt financing from TriplePoint Capital. Facebook drew down $30 million in 2007 followed by another $60 million in 2008. BusinessWeek reports Facebook is currently trying to secure as much as $100 million in debt financing for its next round of growth.

Debt financing against physical assets such as servers and office buildings offer lower rates than a traditional venture capital round. Facebook's server expenditures have a recoverable resale value mapped over a depreciating lifespan, unlike direct and unrecoverable payments to employees and service providers. Lenders such as TriplePoint are a specialized type of real estate investor, a market with huge risk premiums in the current market. Facebook's $100 million debt financing is bigger than TriplePoint's typical investments, placing Facebook's new expansions beyond the investment strategy's scope during a time of real-estate investment turmoil. Facebook needed to look to other financing operations for bigger infrastructure loans, an expected move for the growing company.

Facebook spent $68 million on Rackable servers in 2007 and early 2008, likely as a result of their Virginia data center build-out. Facebook is also rumored to be a large consumer of premium-priced proprietary hardware NetApp storage appliances and Force10 networking.

Facebook's debt financing agreement with TriplePoint Capital expired a few months ago, leading the company to seek new sources of financing for its new Santa Clara data center and other expansion plans. Facebook is in discussions with Bank of America for additional loans against this capital expenditure according to BusinessWeek.

How many servers?

Facebook had over 10,000 servers as of August 2008 according to Wall Street Journal coverage of a presentation by Jonathan Heiliger, Facebook's VP of Technical Operations. Facebook signed an infrastructure solutions agreement with Intel in July 2008 to optimally deploy "thousands" of servers based on Intel Xeon 5400 4-core processors in the next year.

memcached: ~800 memcached servers supplying over 28 TB of memory.
Hadoop: ~600 servers with 8 CPU s and 4 TB of storage per server. That's 4800 cores and about 2 PB of raw storage!
Storage: Facebook adds more than 850 million photos and 7 million videos to its data store each month. That's a lot of Filers.

Facebook uses Akamai and other CDN providers to serve static content to visitors around the world. It's an expensive service offering not covered by Facebook's server debt financing.

Summary

Facebook's faces difficult infrastructure challenges as the company tries to keep up with explosive growth around the world. Current shocks in the real estate investment market have made property financing difficult for all companies, including Facebook. New infrastructure moves from Facebook coming online this year should lower total operating costs per server thanks to new efficiencies in the cost of power and a decline in leasing price per square foot as Facebook buys in bulk. I expect new deals with foreign governments such as Ireland will lead to new expansion by Facebook heavily influenced by the ex-Googlers on staff who have paved this path before.

More Search Options in an Experimental Google Video Interface

webikinoktasifir - Maalesef son günlerde Google'ın arama sonuçlarının kalitesi konusunda soru işaretlerim var. Tam bu noktada Google'ın böyle şeyler denemesi onların da benzer sorunlardan haberdar olduğunu mu gösteriyor acaba?

Google tests a new "tool belt" format that exposes some advanced options and lets you refine the search results without visiting a special page. The format has been tested for web search, image search and now Google Video.

The experimental interface for Google Video includes a link to "search options" which displays a sidebar that lets you restrict the results to a certain video site, choose a date range, the duration of the videos and if they are embeddable. Most of the options are currently available in drop-downs below the search box and in the advanced search, but the new interface makes them more visible and encourages their use.

What I don't like is that Google devotes less space to the videos, it's more difficult to scan the results and the video's position changes when you scroll down.

Is Microsoft About to Buy Facebook for $50 Billion?

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer paid “lip service” to a Yahoo! deal and cleverly set the stage for acquiring Facebook, during his keynote at the Digital Hollywood Media Summit.

Yahoo!’s stock price shot up on the news of his comments, but I think the press and the markets are missing the big picture: Microsoft’s is using the “potential Yahoo! deal” as a red herring with investors. Ballmer is using Yahoo! to convince the market that Microsoft needs to buy Facebook to compete with Google, and to set a price floor of 50 billion for the acquisition. Microsoft may be facing a situation where Facebook usage grows so fast that its costs skyrocket, creating a cash crunch, and in this difficult fundraising environment it’s best bet is just to buy Facebook.

I reached this conclusion after analyzing Ballmer’comments and talking to Microsoft execs at the media summit. Here’s my story from the conference:

Microsoft would spend 47 billion dollars for Yahoo!’s users, not Yahoo! technology. “Small companies you buy for technology, big companies you buy for the customer base.” Ballmer explained. Defending his Yahoo! bid, he said there is still “a compelling set of economics that underpin the idea of a search partnership.”

Microsoft targets “returns to scale” when acquiring a company with a large number of users and advertisers. “The more users you have, the more you know about people’s interests” Ballmer said, and this data is something they could gain from Yahoo!. Ballmer then pitched Microsoft’s ability to use online behavioral data to create targeted advertising and personalized experiences.

“Our goal is to play the relevance game as well as Google.” Ballmer said. Microsoft can rise to the challenge because of its many consumer Internet technologies, online businesses and nine billion dollar R&D budget. What he didn’t didn’t say is that Microsoft still needs to buy a big user base in order to feed this engine.

Ballmer needs to make a bold move. The “Google threat to Microsoft” has been hanging over Ballmer’s head for years. The Google threat emerged on Ballmer’s watch as CEO, and this is the first year since Bill Gates officially retired. Will Ballmer’s defining to acquire Facebook, not Yahoo!?

Reading between the lines:

Ballmer is pitching Wall St. on the fact that Microsoft needs to buy online users
Yahoo! is now just a red herring being used to set a 50 billion price floor for Facebook
Microsoft’s acquisition of Facebook is imminent

1) No Mention of Facebook at a Digital Media Conference Keynote?

In Ballmer’s keynote interview with Steve Adler, Editor-in-Chief of BusinessWeek, the two executives stayed far away from discussing Facebook. Wall Street reporters only heard “Microsoft Yahoo! Deal Still on Table!”.

Ballmer and Adler mentioned they spoke in advance about what to discuss on stage. I was the ears for you all in the audience, and their silence about Facebook was deafening.

No mention of Facebook? Hello… its a digital media conference!

2) Facebook Skips Microsoft Panel

Facebook executive Richard Cooperstein, Head of International Business Development and Strategy, skipped a panel where he was scheduled to speak alongside Brian Hall, Window’s Live General Manager. (Note: I covered Ballmer’s big CES announcement about the Facebook / Windows Live partnership).

Was Facebook avoiding a PR slip up from an awkward audience question?

3) Facebook on the mind of Microsoft Execs

Microsoft executives I chatted with “offline” at the Media Summit think an acquisition is likely. Note: They didn’t say it is immediate, but saw acquiring Facebook as a matter of course for Microsoft.

One Microsoft exec even cited Facebook’s out of control costs, saying Facebook’s success as a photo sharing application creates unbelievable hosting costs, and that Facebook’s movement toward video will take Facebook’s bandwidth costs beyond what can be covered by the funding provided by Microsoft. He left it at that…

Companies don’t announce takeovers early, it raises the price of the target…

How to Freeze Part of Your Word Document

I'm a big fan of Excel's ability to freeze rows and columns.

If I'm looking at a large set of data, I can keep some of the rows and columns fixed and scroll though the rest. After all, this is pretty much useless:

…while this gives me the context I need to make sense of the data:

Now what if I have a similar situation in Word? Say that I have a figure on page one and need to write about it on page three. Do I need to scroll up and down over and over? No. Do I need to copy and paste the figure into another document and do a little split screen dance? No. I just "freeze" the part of the document with the figure.

Here's a document with a figure near the top of page one:

Click on the View Tab, click Split, and put the "splitter" under wherever you want to freeze (Video).

Now you've got much of the same goodness that you have in Excel. You can keep the figure at the top of your screen, and scroll to wherever else you want in the bottom pane. You can change the zoom setting for each pane independently (as I did in the picture above) to give yourself more room to work. Or you can go so far as to vary the views and set one to print view and the other to web view (my personal favorite view in Word). Double click on the splitter when you are done to get rid of it.

Advanced Tip: You can quickly access the splitter by clicking and dragging the little horizontal line above your vertical scroll bar.

But now, you may be thinking "This is great, but is there a way to do this that doesn't take up as much vertical screen real-estate?" Yes. If you go back to the View tab and click the New Window button, you can open a mirror copy of your document, and do all sorts of fun stuff. For example, you could resize the windows like this:

…and do a little multi-monitor emulation. Your edits will be mirrored in each window automatically, but you can manipulate their views independently. That is, the window one on the left could be at the top of the document in outline view zoomed at 100%, while the one on the right could be scrolled to your figure on page 235 in web view and zoomed to 200%. When you are done, just close either of the windows and you are back to one.

Facebook Adds Hide Application Button To Homepage

As expected, Facebook has just launched an updated version of their feed filters which enables you to stop viewing stories from individual applications. For example in the image to the left, you can choose to block out the Google Reader application from your feed. What I’m not sure about is whether or not hiding an application is just for that individual person for for all instances of that application.

Just yesterday I wrote about how granular feed filters are the future of Facebook’s news feed and this appears to be a step in that direction. For the time time being I believe hiding an application blocks it from all people but it would be nice if we could control this on a more granular level. Also not clear is whether or not you can add an application back to your feed after hiding it.

I will play around with the tool and reach out to Facebook. I’ll then update this post shortly.

Uzun bir süredir bu bloga uzun aralıkla az sayıda yazılarla katkıda bulunuyorum.

Bunun başlıca sebebleri arasında vaktimin çoğunu yazmak yerine okumaya ayırmam geliyor.

Bir diğer sebebi ise çoğu zaman yazacaklarımı zaten birilerinin benden önce davranıp yazmaları geliyor.

Bu durumda da bu tür yazıları ve ilgi çekici bulduğum diğer yazıları Google Reader’da paylaşıyorum.

Hal böyle olunca bu blogun yazılarını takip etmekte kullandığım feed’i Google Reader’da paylaştıklarımla birleştirmeyi uygun buldum.

Böylece bu blogu takip edenlerle daha sık etkileşim içinde olmayı umuyorum.

Google Mobile Sync'i calistiramadim

Son günlerin en popular ürünlerinden birisi olan Google Mobile Sync çoktandır beklediğim bir uygulamaydı.

Gmail'in hayatımdaki yerinden dolayı Google Contacts en çok kullandığım kişiler uygulaması oldu. Hatta iletişimde olduğunuz bütün kişileri otomatik olarak kaydettiği için yıllar sonra aklınıza gelen kişileri bulup çıkartması bence en iyi özelliği...

Bunun dışında son zamanlarda Google Calender'ı da etkin bir şekilde kullanmaya başladım.

Bu durumda benim gibi kişiler için Google'ın bu bilgileri cep telefonumla senkronize etmesi harika bir fikir...

Google, bunu Google Mobile Sync ile yaptığını iddia ediyor. "İddia ediyor" diyorum çünkü bu uygulamayı Nokia E71'de kullanamadım.

Açıklamalar kısmında S60 telefonları desteklediğini söylese de Google Sync sayfalarına cep telefonunuzla ulaşmaya çalıştığınızda cep telefonunuzun modelinin tanınamadığı uyarısını alıyorsunuz.

Bu da Beta ürünlerin en büyük handikapı olsa gerek. Sonuçta hazırlanan programlar tam değil ve çalışması konusunda hiçbir garanti verilmiyor.

Beta ürünlerden şikayetçi değilim ama Google gibi bir şirket Beta bir ürün çıkarıyorsa ondan beklentiniz diğerlerine göre biraz daha fazla oluyor.

Gmail 4 yıldan beri beta ama ilk günden beri kullanıcılarının ihtiyaçlarını karşılamaya devam ediyor.

Feedburner’ı Google aldıktan sonra adamlar uzun bir süreden beri Feedburner’ı Google’a entegre etmeye çalışıyorlardı. Nihayet bu entegrasyonu bitirdiler.

Fakat anlaşılan o ki feed adreslerinin güncellenmesi dolayısıyla bir çok blog eski takipçilerini kaybetmiş durumda.

Benzer bir durum benim de başıma geldi. O yüzden sizlere tavsiyem bu blogu webden ziyaret edip feed adreslerini güncellemeniz.

Diyelim ki şirketiniz, kurumunuz, derneğiniz ya da örgütünüz hakkında benim gibi densizler bloglarında yazı yazdılar. Bu gibi durumda ne yapmayı planlıyorsunuz?

Valla yapılacak çok fazla şey yok. Hemen en yakın mahkemeye başvuruyorsunuz. Aslında Diyarbakır, Hakkari gibi yerlerde elemanlarınız varsa oralara başvurun ki benim gibi gariban blogger’lar oraya kadar gidemeyecekleri için savunma yapamasınlar. Sonrasında Telekomünikasyon Kurumu bloga “Bu siteye erişim mahkeme kararıyla engellenmiştir” başlıklı tasarımın günün ihtiyaçlarına göre değiştiği güzel bir yazı ekliyorlar. Böylece sorununuz hallledilmiş oluyor.

Tabi, bu Türkiye gibi bir ülkede olan bir uygulama. Elin ABD’sinde böyle bir çözüm yöntemi olmadığı için kurumlar farklı yöntemlere başvuruyorlar.

Aşağıdaki diyagram da ABD Hava Kuvvetleri’nin meseleye ele alış şeklini yansıtıyor. Adamlar üşenmemişler iletişimin standart olması için standart bir prosedür hazırlamışlar. 2008'in en çok okunan yazıları

2008 yılının bu blogun açık olduğu ilk tam yıl olması açısından ayrı bir önemi var.

2000'in bu son gününde, geçtiğimiz yıla bakıp en çok okunan 10 yazıya burada tekrar hatırlatmak istedim. Bu yazılar şunlardı:

1. Youtube proxy ayarları: Yasaklarla başa çıkmak: Youtube ve genel olarak site yasakları 2008'in en gündemde olan konusuydu. Her ne kadar burada anlattığımız bütün yöntemler bir şekilde yetkililer tarafından bertaraf edilse de herkes kendine göre bir çözüm buldu. Benim şu anda kullandığım yöntem ise host dosyası kullanmak. Açıkcası en ideal çözüm başbakanın bulduğu çözüm olsa gerek.

2. Facebook'ta Application yazmak zor mu?: Bence çok kolay fakat biraz vakit ayırmak gerekiyor. O yazıda söz verdiğim dokümanı bir türlü hazırlamaya fırsat bulamadım.

3. İnternette yasakçı zihniyet çileden çıkarıyor: Proxy Ayarları: Sanırım artık proxy'ler çözüm olmuyor.

4. YouTube, PHP API ve Insight ile gelişmeye devam ediyor: YouTube istatistiklerine ulaşmak artık çok daha kolay.

5. Blogger'ın garip yazı paneli: Blogger'ın yazı paneli bence alanındaki en kötü yazı paneliydi.

6. Netbeans 6.1 çıkmış: Eski dost Netbeans özellikle Java ve mobil geliştiriciler için en iyi alternatif olmaya devam ediyor.

7. Facebook profilleri değişiyor: Yeni profiller özellikle uygulama geliştiriciler için çok eleştirildi fakat en azından kullanım kolaylığı açısından kullanıcıları rahatlattı.

8. Windows Server 2008 ve SQL Server 2008: 2008 yılı Microsoft'un lanse ettiği bir çok ürün için kötü bir yıl oldu. Bakalım 2009 neler getirecek.

9. Slide.com'a 500 milyon dolar değer biçilmiş: Büyük bir olasılıkla balon ama insanı heyecanlandırıyor.

10. Youtube Yasağı ve Cloud Computing : Ayrı iki konu fakat Cloud Computing gelecek vaat ediyor.

11 (Bonus). Google Facebook'a cevap vermede gecikmedi: Google Friend Connect'e bir türlü ısınamadım, bir şeyler eksik gibi.

Evet, 2008'in en çok okunan konuları bunlardı. Herkese yeni yılda sağlık, esenlik ve mutluluk diliyorum.

YouTube Türkiye’de tasarım değişikliği ve yeni reklam modeli(!): Bu yasak olmasa böyle güzel bir espri yapılamazdı.

Android’le fiziki kitaplari arayin

Bilgisayarla haşır neşir olanların en büyük sıkıntısı bilgisayarda yaptıklarını gerçek hayatta yapamamaktır.

Çoğu zaman kalemle bir şey yazarken Ctrl + Z yapıp “geri al”mak isteyenler, okuduğu kitapta bir şeyi bulmak için “Ctrl+F” yapıp arama ekranını gelmesini arzulayanlar genelde bu insanlardır.

Ctrl + Z için bir çözüm üretilmedi ama anlaşılan Google, Android’le fiziksel kitaplarda arama yapmayı başardı.

Şuradan duyurusunu bulabileceğiniz program sayesinde elinizdeki kitap hakkında arama yapabiliyorsunuz.

Sistemin işleyişi son derece basit. Android’li bir telefonla, kitabın ISBN numarasının yazılı olduğu barkodunu kamerayla çekiyorsunuz. Ve program Google Book Search’ten ilgili kitabı buluyor ve siz de o anda kitabı aramaya başlıyorsunuz.

Aslında aşağıdaki resim her şeyi çok iyi özetliyor. Fikir son derece basit olmasına rağmen bunu akıl etmek ve hayata geçirmek gerçekten çok takdir edilmesi gereken bir şey…

Teknoloji giderek hayatımıza daha fazla yer ediniyor ve aslında bence bu harika bir şey!

Bu arada bu uygulamanın duyurusunda kullanılan kitabın Randy Pausch’un Last Lecture kitabı olması ayrı bir güzellik. Bu arada Fikir Atölyesi, Randy Pausch hakkında geç ama güzel bir yazı yazmış. Onu da okumanızı tavsiye ederim.

Gmail kendi blog sitesinde Gmail'in heyecan verici özelliklerinden bahseder. Hatta ben de bu konuda en beğendim özellikleri yazmıştım.

Fakat görünen o ki Gmail'in bazı özellikleri yıllardır diğer mail servis sağlayıcıları tarafından kullanılıyor.

Hatta en son cadılar bayramı'nda AOL Gmail'le dalga geçen bir mesaj geçmiş.

Mesajdaki iğneleyici dile hayran kaldım. Google buna cevap vermede gecikmeyecektir herhalde. Bundan bir kaç gün öncede Gmail'in nasıl dünyanın en iyi mail servisi olduğundan bahsediyorlardı.

Bence o yazı da son derece önemli. Gmail gittikçe bir çok şirket tarafından kullanılmaya başlıyor ve Gmail'in (Google Apps) bir çok şirket tarafından kullanıldığına bizzat şahit olmaya başladım.

Stumble Upon sayesinde e-postalarınızda ya da başka yerlerde kullanabileceğiniz imzalara rastladım.

Gerçekten son derece keyifli ve güzel olanlar var. Onların bazılarını şuradaki feed'e koydum. İsterseniz bu feed'i Gmail'de kullanabilirsiniz.

Gmail Labs ve mail gonderirken pisman olmama

Gmail'in, Labs özelliğini bir kaç bilgisayar meraklısı dışında pek bilen yoktur sanırım.

Gmail Labs, Gmail'le ilgili ek geliştirilmeler yapılmadan önce test edildiği bir sanal labaratuvar. Burada birbirinden farklı çok kullanışlı özellikler yer alıyor.

Gmail Labs'i etkinleştirmek için Ayarlar'dan Labs tabını kullanmak gerekiyor. Burada işinize yarayabilecek bir çok özellik yer alıyor.

Benim kullandıklarım şunlar:

Quick Links - Gmail'deki herhangi bir URL'yi sık kullanılanlara ekleyebiliyorsunuz.

Superstars : Bir mail yalnızca yıldızlamak size yetmiyorsa çok faydalı oluyor.

Pictures in chat : Normalde Chat'i kullananlar için MSN vari bir hava yaratıyor.

Fixed width font : Bu özellik çok kullanışlı çünkü çok mail okuyorsanız gözlerinizi daha az yoruyor.

Signature tweaks : Bu benim en çok sevdiğim özellik. Cevaplarken imzanızı cevaplanan kısmın da altına koymak yerine en başa koyuyor.

Random Signature : Aslında favori özellliğim bu fakat Signature tweaks ile karıştırmışım. Burada da herhangi bir feed'den rastgele bir "item" seçip onu imza olarak kullanabiliyorsunuz. Hatta bununla ilgili kendi sevdiğim sözler için şurada bir feed bile hazırladım. Siz de bu feed'i kullanabilirsiniz.

Mark as Read Button : Direk mail listesinin bulunduğu ekranda okundu olarak işaretle butonu gözüküyor.

Go to label : Hızlıca herhangi bir label'a gitmenizi sağlıyor.

Bunun dışında gelelim yazının başlığında bahsettiğimiz eklentiye. Şuradan da alabileceğiniz malumata göre herhangi bir mail göndermeye kalktığınızda size basit matematik soruları soruluyor.

Tabi böylece sonradan pişman olacağınız bir maili göndermeniz biraz daha önlenmeye çalışıyor. Hatta bu özellliği sadece haftanın belirli zamanlarında etkin hale getirebiliyorsunuz. Böylece geceleri pişman olacağınız mailler atmaktan kurtulabilirsiniz.

Fakat bence bu özellik daha da geliştirilebilir. Ortaya çıkan basit dört işlem sorularının arasına sizin mailinizden alıntılar konulabilir. Böylece dört işlem yaparken kullandığınız mantık sayesinde yazdıklarınıza da mantıklı bakabilirsiniz.
