HTML5 vs native…it’s a common debate. Some are arguing that HTML5 will certainly win. I think both technologies will settle into their respective niches, each doing what they do best, but neither being declared a loser in the end.

We all know how difficult currently is to design a good e-mail for newsletters and marketing campaigns, and although there are ready made templates and online tools available to slightly facilitate this job lots of testing needs to be done to get the design right especially in outlook.

Apple developers’ keynote has ended and there is a video of the whole demonstration and announcements over at Apple’s website (follow the link below).

WWDC 2011 Keynote Video [Click Me]

There have been several new announcements in this years keynote, especially the most notable are the new iCloud service, the new iOS 5 operating system for Apple’s mobile devices [available this Fall] and also the new Lion OSX for Macs [available in July]. Several new features have been added and one can read in detail and also view photos of the keynote via:

After the end of the conference Apple will upload a video of the whole conference so that one is able to view the keynote from start to end.

There are some improvements in OSX and also in iOS but some of the features have already been implemented by Google either on Android or in their Apps which Apple are importing into their “new” applications. There are also some improvements of the Safari browser including some sharing features to save articles/websites on the iPad or on the iPhone and view it later (thanks to synchronisation) on the device you have at hand (like the Read it Later app).

WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO VISIT ON YOUR PLANET?

Don't know maybe Germany.. or England :)

A Web Design Blog by Greg Babula: How HTML5 will kill the native app

A Web Design Blog by Greg Babula: How HTML5 will kill the native app:

Over the past two decades, the mobile industry has become increasingly stunted by fragmented protocols, standards, and regional differences. But a hot new technology called HTML5 promises to remedy this by delivering an unprecedented open, democratic and wonderfully fertile mobile web….

Android And Me has a pretty clear view of what is to be expected from the next update (the overhaul) of the Android market.

I say “finally” as it was a very simple application just listing the applications. Apart from that I would like to see if they will add PayPal support for the Android market as I am only able to see free items in the market.

Also I would also like to see a more strict monitoring service on the applications. Some applications are very cheap looking and some applications are “made in china” kind of which are used just for spam and to make money from ads.

Hope that this update pushes more developers to develop android applications.

Unix Basics

Intro

UNIX is an operating system which was first developed in the 1960s, and has been under constant development. Originally UNIX was a command-line based operating system, like DOS.

Terminal

Each UNIX desktop comes with a Terminal program similar to the Command Prompt in Microsoft Windows operating system.

Using the Terminal - Working with directories

Listing files and directories

ls
list the content (files and folders) of the current working directory

ls –a
list all the files and directories including hidden files in the current working directory

Making Directories

mkdir myFolder
create a new empty directory into the current working directory named myFolder

Changing to a different directory

cd myFolder
change the current working directory to the specified directory which resides in the current working directory (in this case)

cd
changes the current working directory to the home directory

The directories . and ..

cd .
the current directory (does not change directory)

cd ..
go to the parent directory

Pathnames

pwd
print the full path of the current working directory

Using the Terminal - Working with files

Creating Files

Many people create files using a text editor, but you can use the command cat to create files without learning a text editor. To create a practice file (named firstfile) and enter one line of text in it, type the following at the % prompt:

cat > firstfile
(Press the Enter/Return key.)

This is just a test.
(Press the Enter/Return key.)

Stop file entry by typing Control-d on a line by itself. (Hold down the Control key and type d.) On your screen you will see:

% cat > firstfile
This is just a test.
^D

One way to examine the contents of the file you’ve just created is to enter this at the % prompt:

cat firstfile

Copying a File

To make a duplicate copy of a file, use the command cp. For example, to create an exact copy of the file called firstfile, you would type:

cp firstfile secondfile

The result is two files with different names, each containing the same information. The cp command works by overwriting information. If you create a different file called thirdfile and then type the following command:

cp thirdfile firstfile

you will find that the original contents of firstfile are gone, replaced by the contents of thirdfile.

Renaming a File

Unix does not have a command specifically for renaming files. Instead, the mv command is used both to change the name of a file and to move a file into a different directory.

To change the name of a file, use the following command format (where thirdfile and file3 are sample file names):

mv thirdfile file3

The result of this command is that there is no longer a file called thirdfile, but a new file called file3 contains what was previously in thirdfile.

Like cp, the mv command also overwrites existing files. For example, if you have two files, fourthfile and secondfile, and you type the command

mv fourthfile secondfile

mv will remove the original contents of secondfile and replace them with the contents of fourthfile. The effect is that fourthfile is renamed secondfile, but in the process secondfile is deleted.

aulia-m:

Thanks!

simurai:

umbrUI is a demo of HTML input elements made with CSS3. So far they include a range slider, checkbox and radio button. I’m pretty happy with the outcome. They just use minimal markup, no JavaScript and thanks to the Pictos Font Icons, no images.

The sad part, so far only Safari can render it correctly. Chrome looks ok but without the 3D perspective. I haven’t tried the rest of the browsers. I guess for now, using images is still far easier and gives you less headaches. I also tried to add animations, but unfortunately they don’t work on :before/:after pseudo classes and on the range slider, they don’t even exist. Also trying to animate gradients, box-shadows, text-shadows, borders is still really buggy.

See the demo (Safari or Chrome).

Amazing CSS3 implementation. There is still a long way to go for all the browsers to render such elements but this initiative is very futuristic I must say.

Go on like this!

decodering:

Moleskine...

Moleskine Covers for iPhone and iPad (& iPod)

Moleskine introduces two new hybrid tools designed for making it easier the simultaneous use of paper, phone and internet utilities: a Smartphone Covercompatible with iPhone 3G and 3GS, and a Tablet Cover, iPad compatible. Both Covers are combined with blank notebook pages. They are conceived as analog-digital ultra-portable workstations for the contemporary nomads.

Moleskine produces notebooks, diaries, and city guides: flexible and brilliantly simple tools for use both in everyday and extraordinary circumstances, ultimately becoming an integral part of one’s personality.

Moleskine seeing the popularity of Apple devices such as the iPad and the iPhone has conceived two new covers to take advantage of the portability and usefulness of such devices e.g. internet access, email, etc…

The features and style of both Covers are those of a classic Moleskine notebook:sleek rounded corners, strong elastic band, and the legendary smooth black cover. Inside, a lighter suede lining protects the electronic device against impact and scratches, alongside a Volant notebook with plain pages. The Smartphone Cover is mainly conceived to be used with Bluetooth, headphones or loud speaker. Smartphone and Tablet Covers add to the first piece in the Folio Digital collection, the e-Reader Cover for Kindle.
