All this sound very plausible and true (i’m still skeptical about the Retine Display thing, but it appears to be almost confirmed) however there’s one thing that does not makes sense.

The sources described the case and the port holes and 9to5mac made a mockup based on it that looks like this:

There’s something wrong here. The power connector and the thunderbolt port are on different sides of the MacBook. That is not right, actually it’s very wrong . Consider connecting a Thunderbolt Display to the MacBook (THE ONE display apple wants you to connect to your MacBook), The Display’s connector is one cable splitted at the end in two: power and thunderbolt cable. Like this:

So basically, you cannot connect a thunderbolt display to the new MacBook. Apple won’t make such a mistake. NO. WAY. JOSE.

Maybe Apple will update the Thunderbolt Display and break backwards-compatibility. They’ve certainly done it before, but usually for technical reasons, not design mistakes. So I don’t think that’s the case.

Most likely 9to5mac got that tiny bit of their report wrong. But if that’s the case one cannot help but wonder, what else is wrong about it?

Everyone seems to agree that Apple simplified the name of the iPad to just “iPad” instead of iPad 3 or iPad HD just because “it makes sense”.

I agree on this as well. It’s obvious once you see almost every other product line that adding “marketing model names” or numbers is not necessary for Apple and not an Apple-like thing to do.

Everyone has already said that there are no MacBook 5 or iPod 11 and stuff like that. It makes sense. Right now only the iPhone has “model names” but that might change on the next iteration.

But what if this simplification of the name is the door opening for something else?

Where does Apple add “marketing model” names to its products?
The answer is: On the ones that have branches.

iPod branches are Nano and Touch (There had been Mini and Classic as well). MacBooks branches are Air and Pro. iMacs and Mac Pros have no branches.

See where I’m going here? What if Apple renamed the iPad to just “iPad” just because is opnening the door to a variation? Let’s say….. an iPad Nano.

What if there’s a whole shift in product renaming? iPod Touch could be the new “iPad nano”,  the rumored 7.85inch iPad could be the “iPad Mini” and then there’ll be the iPad.

Or maybe it’s just one device that’s somewhere tin the 5-7 inch range that would replace the iPod Touch adding 3G and focused on gaming. An iPad Nano/Play/Fun?

Also it makes sense to rename the iPod Touch as an iPad. It’s more close to an iPad than it is to any iPod that sells nowadays. Just add a 3G/4G flavor.

The growing rumors of the 7.85inch iPad being tested and Amazon slowly carving themselves a spot in that size range might suggest that Apple might be looking to compete there.

Personally, I don’t think 7 inch iPad will be launched anytime soon or at all. I don’t think the size is right and Apple is not a reactive company. They don’t enter markets that someone already created, they’re usually disruptive. But the whole iPad naming simplification might be more than a “it makes sense” decision and be more of an opening door for naming branches.

I guess we’ll know as the years unfolds.

There’s a great article on Smashing Magazine that says that a User Experience cannot be designed.

The article goes through a lot of theory and reasoning to prove that right based on a lot of naming conventions of what UX is and is not and then it reaches the main premise “you cannot design the situation of the user” ergo you can’t design the UX.

In the end it all comes down to the fact that you design for the experience instead of design the experience. true, but then again there were too many words for such an obvious statement.

Be that as it may I found myself this morning reflecting about some of my best experiences and how did they came to happen. I noticed that most of my most valued experiences happened all in one place: Walt Disney World.

In many ways I grew shaped by the ideas and experiences that I lived on the times I went to Disney World. It’s no secret that the 2 people I admire the most are Walt Disney and Steve Jobs. And both of them were somehow able to create companies that shaped my experience and the experiences of many others.

We’ve all felt the “reality distortion field” that Steve had and I cannot avoid comparing that to the feeling you get when you enter a Disney ride. From Pirates of the Caribbean to the Small World, every single Disney ride leaves you with an amazing feeling that you somehow became part of the stories told there. And from a kid’s point of view, it’s even more awesome!

It happens with most Apple products. It happens with Disney movies. Somehow these two companies manage to design absolutely amazing experiences driving a huge fanatism over their brands.

But how do they do that? How Disney rides manage to make you feel part of a magic story? And how can that be applied to UX design? I do not pretend to know the key of how they do it, but I do realize a few stuff that might lead us there.

I found two key things that I believe are key to create this experiences:

A magical feel.

In both Apple products and Disney movies & rides there’s a huge sensation of something magical happening around. One minute you’re in a line and the next one you’re in a world surrounded by pirates, you pinch your fingers over the glass and the picture on the screen grows larger, you go into a cinema room and suddenly you’re underwater with bubbles around you and the little mermaid singing in front, you touch a couple of buttons and you are videotalking with your grandsons that are halfway aound the world.

All magician know that it’s all about the illusion in your mind. It’s about the surprise, the unexpected, the “impossible” thing that happens in front of your eyes. Both Disney and Apple know how to do that. Both Steve and Walt pushed the bar higher time after time to achieve that kind of feeling.

It’s about the “I don’t know how it happened, but wow” feel that people get when they experience what you want them to experience. That usually requires overcoming huge technical challenges and most importantly, requires A LOT of imagination.

I always wanted to be a Disney Imagineer. They’re the guys that make the magic real, the ones that make a screen so big and effects so great that you swear your flying on an icarus over California on Epcot’s ride “Soarin’”.

To achieve that kind of “awesomeness”  you need to care deeply about details. It’s the smell of oranges when you’re over the oranges feel that make you feel you’re there (Soarin’ again), it’s the disgusting hairs on the leg of the pirate on the bridge (Pirates of the Caribbean).

Apple does the same, removing buttons, caring about every animation, every touch, every single little thing, and then hiding all the technical stuff from the user. It seems magical to use an iPad or an iPhone, even nowadays.

Taking care of all the little details and overcoming the technical challenges with a lot of imagination is the key to create a magical feel that will shape the user experience.

Storytelling

The other key thing that creates amazing User Experience and the key step I found to “design” the user experience is storytelling.

We humans are very prone to storytelling, it’s the way that for millenia we’ve learned and shared our knowledge and culture. Still today, with all our technology, that hasn’t changed one bit. Storytelling was, is and will be the best way to reach the human heart and brain and to create a dent in someone’s life.

That’s something both Walt and Steve managed amazingly. Remember Steve presenting the iPhone, the way he told the story of how smartphones at the time had all the keyboard problem, the logic process of how they tackled it and solved it, the countless hours developing and the amazing feeling you get when you use it. Now think of the great Disney movies. They’re all inmersive stories that creates amazing experiences. Same with the rides: they make you feel liek you’re in the middle of those stories.

When you create an amazing story and sorround it with a magical feel on it you have the key to design an amazing experience that your users/costumers/visitors will cherish for life. Apple & Disney are not alone on this: Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings and even some Google Products (Search, Gmail, etc) have a “magical feel” around it that helps build an amazing experience.

Taking that to UX

So let’s take that to the UX design process.

When designing an app the application of these principles might go against some of the “keystones” of UX design. Be bold and fear not.

Take “usability” for example, altough I’m a big defender of the “usability first” principle I noticed that what makes some apps great are that they sacrifice some usability upgrades in pro of a more “magical” feel.

Consider the recently launched Gemini Mac app to remove file duplicates. The animations on this app might go agains some “usability principles” like speed. They make deletion slower on purpose to show a 2 second animation of papers getting shredded, but all those little details are what makes the experience of the app such a bliss to use.

So my take here is that it’s ok to sacrifice some usability principles if it’s in pro of creating a magical feel. However that should apply only to secondary features. Don’t be afraid to make small usaility sacrifices in pro of a more “magical feel”.

Apple is doing that with all the skeumorphing they’ve been adding to their apps lately. I’m still not sure how I feel about that specifically (I’m not very fond of it) but they’re definitely being bold on turning usability principles off in pro of a more magical feel.

Also try to add some storytelling to it. Maybe on the selling video, maybe on some of the features or even in error dialogs (funny 404 pages are a good example of this). But please… remember Clippy. No one wants Clippy (and don’t get me started on Microsoft Bob).

Usability and purpose still go first. There are many great usable apps that need no magic or storytelling. Productivity apps are good example. But when you add a nice magic feel to it, it becomes awesome (think “Tea house Fox” theme for Gmail).

If you want to build something great become a UX Imagineer. Focus on the details, even those that are not-obvious (remember the smell of oranges) tackle the big technical problems using your imagination to create new ways to solve them, take your time, sweat every detail until it feels right. Let imagination guide you.

Make your app feel magical for the user, make them feel that they’re doing something impossible. Make the user achieve his goals in an easy, fun and magical way. And make them feel part of a great story while they’re at it. Do that and success is most likely  guaranteed.

UPDATE: Patrick Neeman (@usabilitycounts) sugested me to add a link to the process of imagineering which is how in reality, everything gets done. Reading the article I noticed a third key which is kind of obvious: Testing. Testing and retesting is key to make sure that what you’re building actually makes sense.

Siempre nos quejamos de que queremos tener un mundo mejor y culpamos al entorno que no nos deja, vivimos bajo la idea de “locus de control externo” que no nos deja ser.

Entonces me dije, si la idea es cambiar uno primero para luego cambiar a los que te rodean, que mejor que compartir parte de esas ideas que me han cambiado con los que me rodean?

Eso se traduce en que a partir de hoy todos los días (o todos los posibles) de este 2012 voy a compartir un video, lección, imagen, mensaje, artículo o idea que me haya impactado ese día. De esa forma aquellos que decidan unirse a esta idea mejorarán también.

Cada día son mas los rumores de que Apple prepara un televisor que revolucionará el mercado de los TVs y el consumo de contenidos en un TV.

Aunque no hay información oficial de ningún tipo, los rumores apuntan a equipos que van entre 32 y 55 pulgadas y que, como sucede siempre con Apple, redefinirá la forma de consumir contenidos en nuestra sala ya que los rumores dicen que controlaremos nuestro TV usando Siri, o sea, con nuestra voz.

Si bien Apple es una compañía de equipos móviles, la sala es el único espacio que Apple le falta por conquistar en nuestros hogares y el potencial económico del mismo es profundamente tentador.

Lo más probable entonces es que el año que viene o el siguiente veamos a Apple incursionar en este mercado reventando todos los esquemas de cómo usamos un TV hasta el momento., introduciendo nuecas formas de interactuar con nuestros TVs y seguramente cambiando por completo la forma en que consumimos contenido en el mismo.

Hoy se cumple el primer aniversario desde que emigré de mi país natal. Es difícil hacer un resumen de lo que ha sido este año, pero cuando pienso en describirlo en pocas palabras, las que me saltan a la cabeza es: “aprende y avanza”.

Voy a tratar de reflexionar en ambas palabras.

Aprende

• Aprendí que quiero y extraño mi país mas de lo que hubiese supuesto.
• Aprendí que, aún y extrañándolo, ya no podría volver, es una prisión para la mente y el cuerpo y una tristeza que lo sea.
• Aprendí que no importa que tan incierto se vea el futuro, las cosas se resuelven solas cuando que se procede con buena actitud. Lo importante es resolver, actuar, moverse.
• Aprendí que muchas de las cosas de las que me quejaba en mi país natal, pasan en todos los demás también.
• Aprendí que una vida lujosa en el tercer mundo es barata. Aquí, es carísima.
• Aprendí a abrir la mente  y escuchar, pero aún me falta.
• Aprendí que muchas de las raíces de los problemasde mi país natal vienen de donde estoy ahora.
• Aprendí que viejos sueños y metas, pueden transformarse y es natural.
• Aprendí que emprender es mucho más difícil cuando hay que pagar alquiler.
• Aprendí que adaptarse es enfocarse en lo bueno de lo nuevo, nunca en lo malo de lo nuevo ni en lo bueno de lo viejo.
• Aprendí que la Harina Pan, es global brother.
• … y tantas cosas más que aprendí.

A algo tan importante hay que tenerle cariño.

Hace algunos años decidí cambiar mi CV del clásico Word a una página web en HTML lo más semántico posible. Desde entonces he visto muchas ideas y formatos de CV originales que han hecho diversos diseñadores y desarrolladores. En este último año mi vida ha cambiado tanto que era hora de hacer algo diferente en mi CV.

Cuando vi el timeline de Facebook (aunque yo no soy particularmente fanático del estilo de diseño de fb) me quedé impresionado. Me pareció una manera sencilla e inteligente de realizar un CV, donde quede retratada de forma sencilla tu historia profesional.

Me decidí y empecé a elaborar un draft de como sería. Cuando publiqué el draft en Google+ tuvo muy buena acogida por lo que me dediqué a elaborarlo.

Hoy he terminado mi nuevo CV y quiero compartirlo con ustedes

Del lado izquierdo están los atributos personales: biografía, habilidades, títulos, etc. Del lado derecho está mi experiencia en el tiempo: trabajos y estudios a lo largo de los años.

Personalmente creo que el concepto funciona fantásticamente y se ve espectacular. Y tú que opinas?

El 11 de julio pasado me atreví a realizar algunas predicciones para el evento de Apple que ahora se sabe será el 4 de octubre.

Auqnue aún no sabemos nada si hay novedades y quiero actualizar el post con las novedades. No voy a cambiar mis predicciones, aunque con estos meses de avance creo que algunas de mis predicciones son ahora menos probables.

No es común que haga predicciones sobre lo que va a sacar Apple en los próximos meses. Mucho menos tengo idea alguna o fuente alguna en la cual basar mis predicciones, pero luego de algunos años viendo a Apple evolucionar y basándome en los millones de rumores que circulan a diario les voy a contar lo que presiento que pueda suceder.

MacBooks

Antes de empezar con el otoño de 2011 me voy a ir un poco mas adelante. Deben estar por salir las nuevas MacBook Airs y no me sorprendería ver morir al clásico MacBook Blanco, lo dudo, pero es probable que suceda.

[confirmado: pocas semanas después Apple renovó el MacBook Air y terminó con el MacBook blanco, the end of an era!. Es un buen comienzo]

Para el año que viene espero una buena revolución de los MacBooks incorporando las mejores características de las Airs. Mis predicciones son:

• No habrá unidad óptica
• Habrá en su reemplazo un DD tradicional de mucho espacio (1TB?)
• Habrá un disco principal (para SO y Apps) será un SSD de unos 80gb
• Baterías mas duraderas gracias al menor consumo del SSD.
• Mas puertos Thunderbolt (no creo que actualicen los USB2 a USB3)
• de 6 a 8 gb de RAM estándar.
• Retina Display (esto es una grosería, pero hay rastros en el código de Lion que lo sugiere, así que ojalá)
• Nuevo diseño, lógicamente.

Evento Otoño 2011

Apple anualmente hace un evento en septiembre para introducir su nueva línea de iPods, llevan varios años haciéndolo, por lo que es de estimarse que en septiembre-octubre de 2011 tengamos un evento de este “estilo”.

Sin embargo iOS5 fue “pospuesto” para este otoño (todos los años anteriores ha salido en verano), el evento que se había vuelto común que era el preview de iOS en marzo este año no sucedió. Tampoco lanzaron un nuevo iPhone en el WWDC como lo habían hecho todos los años anteriores junto con la salida de iOS.

El WWDC de este año fue una conferencia para desarrolladores, como debe ser de ahora en adelante. Y por otra parte tiene más sentido lanzar iPhones y iPads en octubre cuando va a empezar la temporada navideña que en Julio o Febrero que por lo general son épocas de menor consumo.

Por lo tanto creo que el evento de este año va a cambiar los timings de Apple. No va a ser un evento de iPods sino un evento de iOS devices donde van a lanzar:

[confirmado: la invitación dice: "let's talk iPhone", no hay referencias a ipods o a un evento musical, el estilo de este evento de otoño ha cambiado. Veremos si se mantiene en el tiempo]

iPhone

Estoy indeciso entre si el iPhone nuevo va a ser un iPhone 4 mejorado o un iPhone 5 que implique un diseño nuevo. Dado mis últimos análisis creo que va a ser un iPhone 4 mejoradp mas que un rediseño completo. Lo digo basándome en el historico  ciclo TIC-TIC-TOC que ha llevado Apple hasta ahora.

• Creo que va a integrar CDMA con GSM
• Corregir los problemas de antena
• Procesador A5 y memoria RAm ampliada
• Cámara de 8MP (de este no estoy muy convencido)
• Nuevos sensores… Termómetro, Barómetro (leí eso por algún lado, y me acuerdo que la brújula pusieron en el 3Gs por lo que tendría sentido colocarlo ahorita)

Es normal ver tantos rumores cruzados. Apple debe estar trabajando en ambas generaciones a la vez como siempre ha hecho. por lo que creo que rumor de cambio significativo debe ser asignado al año que viene, en octubre 2012 y rumor de cambio menor, debe ser sobre este iPhone que veremos en otoño.

Poco más, el nuevo iPhone va a ser la base para un cambio de diseño mayor que vendrá en la nueva generación de iPhone que estimo, saldrá en octubre 2012 (moviendo el ciclo de lanzamiento de verano a otoño, que tiene más sentido comercialmente)

[los rumores siguen siendo muy cruzados, pero todo apunta a que puedo estar equivocado y si se viene un major iteration para el iPhone... veremos]

iPods

Se ha hablado mucho de un iPhone nano, un modelo económico, sin contrato de operadoras “libre” y de menor costo de fabricación. Esto tiene mucho sentido para Apple sobre todo en mercados internacionales.

Para mi el iPhone Cheap no va a ser más que el iPod Touch con 3G. Si lo pensamos, con Facetime, iMessage  e  iCloud el iPod Touch bien podría convertirse en un dispositivo de comunicación completo, si tan sólo tuviese 3G!

Por lo que para mí este es el movimiento lógico a seguir. No diversificar la marca iPhone pero ofrecer un iPod Touch cuya única diferencia sea algo del hardware (A4 en vez de A5 por ejm) y que no tenga teléfono, que cada vez es menos usado.

[los rumores siguen cruzados en este tema. Bien sea un iPod Touch 3G o un iPhone 4S el hecho es que parece que va a habr una alternativa al iphone de bajo costo y que resuelva las necesidades de comunicación que el ipod Touch no puede. El nombre que le den, es indiferente]

Veremos nuevos modelos de iPod Nano, que en una predicción bastante exagerada, apple debería renombrar como iWatch, hacerlo redondeado y venderlo con un wrist band extra para convertirlo en reloj. El año pasado fue un fenómeno el iPod Nano como reloj, Apple tiene una tremenda oportunidad allí. Obviamente esto es muy improbable, lo más probable es que veamos una renovación menor (mas memoria, y poco más).

El iPod Shuffle y el Classic probablemente no se renueven pero si se mantengan como productos marginales con nichos aún existentes. Pasarán sin pena ni gracia por la keynote.

iPad

El iPad 2 está recién lanzado. No tiene mucho sentido reemplazar el modelo con tan poco tiempo de lanzamiento, además al ser un mercado nuevo todavía no hay ciclos bien establecidos.

Una de mis decepciones y la razón por la que no compré el iPad 2 es porque quería que tuviese Retina Display. Es lo único que le falta a mi parecer.

Por lo que el último rumor que leí tiene bastante sentido:  Apple podría lazar en octubre un iPad HD con Retina Display para segmentos mas profesionales. Lo único que no me encaja en esta teoría es que vayan a diversificar el mercado en 2 segmentos, pero dándole una vuelta tiene todo el sentido del mundo.

Lo que creo que puede suceder será lo siguiente:

Apple va a lanzar un iPad HD. Al tener casi 80% de la cuota de mercado de tablets, pueden darse el lujo de diversificar la oferta, son los reyes del terreno y así logran apuntar a múltiples segmentos.

Las Retina Display de ese tamaño deben ser aún costosas de producir por lo que el iPad HD tendría un precio de unos 100$-200$ más que el precio actual del iPad cubriendo así el costo extra de producción. Le añadirán seguramente alguna otra cosa, como los sensores avanzados (termómetro, barñometro, etc) o una mejor cámara tanto frontal como trasera.

No conforme con eso y para tener una estrategia aún mas agresiva en el mercado de tablets, al tener un modelo “pro” de gama alta me atrevería a estimar que van a bajarle un poco el precio al iPad2 actual, unos 100$ (El iPad2 será al iPad HD lo que el iPod Touch al iPhone) dejando así una diferencia de 300$ entre ambos modelos, una diferencia bien marcada que crearía 2 nichos bien definidos, permitiéndole a Apple mantenerse competitivo y abarcar una base de usuarios mayor porque habrá “para todos los gustos”.

[los últimos rumores apuntan a que estoy en lo cierto, pero que esto no sucederá en este evento sino en enero-febrero. Creo que es probable que eso pase dado que Apple no tiene apuro en renovar el iPad (no tiene competidores serios, aunque falta por ver que anuncia hoy Amazon)]

Luego veremos un iPad 3 en octubre del año que viene también, en el nuevo evento de iOS devices que reemplazará al antiguo evento de lanzamiento de iPods.

En fin, estas son mis predicciones para este Otoño. Veremos que sucede.
