The title of his Keynote is: “Education Parkour: Tracking the Open Web for Teaching and Learning.”

Interview with Plone Symposium East 2012 keynote speaker Jim Groom Jim Groom is director of the Division of Teaching and Learning Technologies and adjunct professor at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia and a keynote speaker at Plone Symposium East 2012. The title of his Keynote is: “Education Parkour: Tracking the Open Web for Teaching and Learning.” It will examine how a university's ability to leverage the open web for developing an ever greater mechanism to innovate around research, teaching, and learning has never been simpler.

For more information and to register for Plone Symposium East 2012, please go to: http://weblion.psu.edu/symposium.

What's your background in using the open web for teaching and learning?

I've been teaching in higher ed for the last 15 years, and more focused in the space of edtech for the last 8 years. I think of myself more as vernacular academic then anything else, thinking that the impact of the web on our culture can really only be studied minute by minute without being fired or denied tenure by an instructional technologist. We are in the most important space in higher ed, in many ways, and if we don't start understanding ourselves more as thinkers and less as servants than the whole enterprise could be in deep trouble.

Why is it important for universities to take advantage of the open web?

That question is equivalent to asking a delivery company back in 1910 or 1912 why they should take the invention of the automobile seriously, because it will change the face of the world we live in permanently and IRREVOCABLY!

Can you give a specific example of how the open web has enabled you to do something cool and effective (could be from your ds106 course)?

One thing that continues to amaze me is how the open web has allowed the a course I teach to bring more than 500 open, online participants into a course of 25 students to give feedback, model assignments, forge community, and generally demonstrate that the course can be a portal to a far richer, heterogeneous, and dynamic learning community then we could have heretofore imagined before the web.

What are some of the things you will talk about at your keynote?

I will talk about the fact that empowering students with their own domain and web hosting should represent the future of how we approach IT infrastructure in higher ed. I will talk about the role open source applications play in building new model for community in the virtual world that augment the learning communities already happening in the "real" world. I'll also be talking about the open education movement, and how that parallels many of the values of the open source movement, albeit with a number of subtle yet important differences. Lastly, I'll be talking about the importance of experimentation and collaboration in highered at this moment, the future of the web is still to be determined, and given universities have been so instrumental in its birth, I want to believe they will remain equally important in its development.

You've been to State College before, what do you look forward to the most when you come here?

State College is the ultimate model of a learning community in that you’re basically an intellectual community on steroids---everything is bigger, everything is more intense, and everything is blue and white :) More seriously, it's a place that has been doing some of the most amazing work in instructional technologies for going on a decade, and there are few public universities that invest so much in so many good people---for me Penn State remains the model for putting the greatest value on people rather than technology---and that is a lesson so many universities and colleges have yet to learn, but it is also why PSU is at the top of the food chain when it comes to edtech---just to name one field they excel in.

Anything else you might like to add?

Interview with Plone Symposium East 2012 keynote speaker Paul Roeland Paul Roeland is an integrator, organizer, and open source advocate and a keynote speaker at Plone Symposium East 2012. The title of his Keynote is: “Better Tools for a Better World; Leveraging Technology to Enable Successful Non-profit Communities.” It will focus on the role of technology in enabling non-profit communities to self-organize and to become more effective and accountable.

For more information and to register for Plone Symposium East 2012, please go to: http://weblion.psu.edu/symposium.

How did you end up going from being a physicist to working in the non-profit environmental organization world?

Even while studying geophysics, I was more interested in the potential of earthquake research than yet more oil exploration. So I guess the whole idea of non-profits was appealing.

But it became irresistible when I met other geeks working on similar topics, from the early stages of hacktivism to using proper science to check environmental records of big corporations, not gut feeling. Dishing up a juicy scandal is just so much better with properly checked facts. ;-)

In short, I find having people with a scientific background on board is very useful to various non-profits, but vice-versa it is also a great feeling to apply your scientific knowledge in positive ways.

What are some of the benefits that technology offers to non-profits?

Technology, and especially computer technology, is a great equalizer. It radically reduces the cost and enhances the speed of organizing. This can pit a modest-sized but smart non-profit against an oil giant or government on almost equal footing. Not only on the communications level, but sometimes even crowdsourcing scientific data.

The open source idea, especially, has a great deal to offer non-profits. On a technological level, but also on a philosophical and cultural level. Not so much open source software, but the related fields of open data and open standards can have potentially huge impacts on the world of non-profits. Data journalism will become a skillset much sought after by non-profits.

Of course, nothing is ever that simple. Any non-profit can just as easily become the object of scrutiny and criticism, and therefore any failures in your own communications and/or research will be mercilessly picked apart. Nobody will believe a non-profit on their pretty blue eyes anymore, so it puts extra strain on non-profits to deliver solid reports.

Note that I see this as a positive, not a negative, but it is something to reckon with before you start playing with technology.

What are the advantages of using Plone for a non-profit organization like Clean Clothes or a university?

Plone is robust, secure, and easy for end users. Just the cost you can save on training your end users, because the interface is logical (and available in many languages) outweighs any potential 'it does not run on $5-a-month-hosting' arguments.

Furthermore, quite a few non-profits have a surprisingly high need for security and advanced workflows. I've seen and used extranets where 12 levels of access and hundreds of groups and local roles were the absolute bare minimum, not some paranoid sysadmin's fantasy ;-)

Now, try doing that in anything else but Plone. I have, and let me tell you that wasn't pretty... Then, there's the community. Plone is rather special in the emphasis it places on community. Now, that's something non-profits, and universities, can relate to and thrive on.

That community is also very friendly. As a non-profit or academic institution, you can participate in Plone discussions and your questions will usually be seen as valid, interesting and helpful use-cases, not as annoying demands from badly paying customers. There's a reason why the percentage of nonprofit and academic participants is so high on conferences and events...

Can you give a specific example of how technology helps non-profits?

Quite a few. In my line of work, the combination of geo-tagging and mapping combined with the ubiquity of low-cost tech like SMS has the potential to transform reporting and exposing, and give a direct voice to millions of sweatshop and electronics workers.

Also, the argument that setting up an effective monitoring system on a whole supply chain would be too costly for companies, has become void. That system is in effect already in place; tracking & tracing, insurance, logistics companies do it in a very cost-effective way. So, just add some Open Data bells & whistles, and we're in business. Reluctance to do so is no longer an economical, but a political argument. Ah, now it gets interesting ;-)

What can people expect to take away from your keynote? Anything else you might like to add?

I aim to provide some inspiring examples of how the technology we create as a community is being used in creative ways, and how non-profits can and should adapt to also contribute their knowledge back.

Oh, and waking everybody up with some entertainment for their second day at PSE is probably also in the job description...
