But Hinduism is an ancient and complex faith with almost a billion adherents, and there's such a diversity that virtually no common thread can be found in all methods of Hindu worship.

Nothing proves that more true than Gadhimai Mela, a fair that takes places once every five years in southern Nepal to honor the goddess Gadhimai. Tens of thousands of pilgrims from Nepal and India have gathered to offer animal sacrifices to the goddess in return for blessings. One man who prayed for a son at the last festival had his wish granted, and this year reportedly sacrificed 105 buffaloes.

Animal rights campaigners protesting the festival have had no success. The Indian pilgrims came all the way to Nepal because animal sacrifice is illegal in India, and they're not going to be stopped. The BBC estimates that a quarter of a million animals, from pigeons to lambs to buffaloes, will be sacrificed. Local tanners and butchers are doing a brisk trade, as are the illicit stills set up to entertain the pilgrims. Six people have already died from drinking illegal home brew.

This isn't the only animal sacrifice in Hinduism. It's been popular in various times and places in the Hindu world and there are numerous references to it in holy texts, including a horse sacrifice in the famous epic the Ramayana, shown here.
Quarter million animals sacrificed at Hindu festival originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 12:30:00 EST.
I'm a sucker for a good mashup. RoomAtlas is such a service - it combines the power of Google maps with thousands of hotel locations. The map looks a bit like a Monopoly board, and shows the location of hotels, along with a color coded price, links to reviews, a thumbnail photo and a link to a booking site with even more details of the property.

Rates come from Hotels.com and Expedia, so you are almost always going to get the best available rates. I've been playing with the site for some time this morning, and absolutely love how easy it is to find a hotel where you want it, for the price you are willing to pay.

RoomAtlas current covers 53,000 hotels from all around the world. Prices can be displayed in US Dollars and UK Pounds.
RoomAtlas mashes Google maps with hotel prices and reviews originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 11:30:00 EST. On January 22 of this year they kidnapped a group of Western tourists near the Mali-Niger border and later murdered a British national. The advisory also warns that two popular festivals, The Festival in the Desert and Sahara Nights, are in the danger zone and should be avoided.

This is such a shame, as Timbuktu, shown here, is a World Heritage Site and the Festival in the Desert is one of Africa's best music gatherings. Mali is a poor nation and people need the hard currency that tourism brings. It seems that once again the actions of a few criminals are ruining it for the decent folk.

Have you been to Mali? Did you feel safe? Here are five traits of traveling companions you should avoid (and I've excluded the obvious, like snorers and kleptomaniacs):

The ditcher: The companion who bails on you at the first whiff of romantic interest, night after night. Besides getting annoyed at being stuck with the romantic-interest's own travel partner or, worse yet, sitting alone at the bar, you might find that you can't budget on splitting the cost of hotel rooms when your friend finds a long-term lover.

The puker: I'm not only talking about a weak stomach -- there are folks out there who can't ride a tricycle without tossing their mother's chocolate-chip cookies. Forget about taking an all-night bus ride as well as sampling local cuisine. And I hope you don't need the bathroom, because they'll be in there all night.

The druggie: Ditch the traveler who just wants to get effed up every night (unless you do, too), is in to buying illegal street drugs, and generally makes you nervous crossing international borders in Asia. They're nothing but trouble, and you could go down with them.

The complainer: I once met a girl when I was traveling from Athens to Rome who wouldn't shut up about how she just wanted McDonald's, how dirty Athens was, how much she missed Michigan, etc. I'm normally a very cheery person, so when she suggested we travel together, I changed my itinerary, stat. A little homesickness is normal, but who wants to hang with someone who's a constant downer?

The money-obsessed: This type can go both ways; either their budget is tighter than a Thai prostitute's tube top, or looser than said prostitute's you-know-what (is that metaphor too tacky to write? Apologies). Moderation may be boring, but it's probably also key to enjoying a longer trip. You could find yourself dining alone while your companion indulges in yet another cup of instant noodles, or dragged along for a trendy, spendy dinner. Make sure your budgets are in agreement before you leave.

The top five worst traveling companions originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 10:00:00 EST.
Cruise ships have a bit of a bad reputation. Those that love cruising really love it, and will have 10 or 20 voyages in their past. Those that hate it, will claim they'd rather be shot than take a cruise. There are lot of myths about cruise ships, so Gadling is here to help dispel some of them.
Continue reading Dispelling the top myths about cruise ships

Dispelling the top myths about cruise ships originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 09:30:00 EST. Each airline was rated on its comfort, service, food, and website.

These are the airlines to come in first this year:

Large Domestic (Premium class): Continental Airlines
Large Domestic (Economy class): JetBlue Airways
Midsize Domestic (Both Premium and Economy): Virgin America
International (Both Premium and Economy): Singapore Airlines

Any guesses on the top-ranked airport? Portland, Oregon. And the worst? LaGuardia, New York.

The full survey goes on to list everything from best luggage policy, to best in-flight entertainment, to quips from the 'write in' portions, such as "Treats occasional fliers like dirt, and treats frequent fliers like a better class of dirt."

In total, the survey gathers the collective consensus of 5,895 frequent fliers and travel agents, who took 97,600 flights altogether in the past year.
Who was tops in Zagat airline survey? originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 09:00:00 EST. This discrepancy has led to a highly competitive situation, in which people will actually camp outside the Grand Canyon permit office in order to be first in line on the day the permits become available. Those who cannot go in person are forced to fax in their applications, and with only one fax line, that can turn into an exercise in frustration. Worse yet, hikers without access to a fax machine have to mail in their applications, putting them even further behind those that can physically visit the office.

Beginning in February of 2010, the Park Service will no longer accept applications in person however, and everyone will be forced to apply via fax or mail. This process should, in theory, give all applicants the same opportunity to to earn one of the coveted permits.

Continue reading New permit system announced for Grand Canyon

New permit system announced for Grand Canyon originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 08:30:00 EST. You're running a reasonable profit - let's say 10 percent, enough to keep the shareholders off their backs. And, they're growing annually at a low double-digit rate, as well. Again, the shareholders are seeing an upside, so there's no pressure on the airline's management. Since the numbers being posted are healthy, the need for cutthroat competition evaporates, and passengers make their choices by destination and service, the latter playing a minor role, because in this perfect world, service is pretty much consistent (and high) from one airline to the next.

Blissful, right? Well, it's just about impossible.

What shatters this fantasy, in which Santa's the pilot and the tooth fairy is pushing the drink cart, is the concept of price. The travel market - like any market - doesn't carve itself up neatly into the best possible outcomes for all involved. Some people make fantastic decisions, while others behave like morons. The leaders of each company think they can find an edge. Even in the perfect world described above, the mere possibility of an advantage can send the whole system into mayhem, but we'll get to that in a moment.

The last time I visited Las Vegas, I was 12 years old, and with my parents (you can imagine what a great time that was, both for my kid-saddled parents and me). Though I've never thought much about returning for myself, my English husband has never been, and I've always maintained that Vegas is one of those cities that has to be experienced to believe. I think this awesome photograph shared by justin fain in our Gadling Flickr pool proves my point.

If you've got some great travel shots you'd love to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day.
Photo of the day 11.23.09 originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 19:00:00 EST. The problem was, the flight was fully booked, and apparently there were no alternative flights. That left Mr. Fa stranded and he missed the funeral.

There's been a lot of debate about the policy of charging overweight passengers for a second seat. Southwest says that if a passenger can't put down the armrests without encroaching on their neighbors' space then they need to buy another seat. If the flight isn't oversold, Southwest says they refund the extra charge.

In this case, Southwest has said they will refund Mr. Fa for the one seat he did buy, but wasn't allowed to use.

That's cold comfort for him. He wasn't able to join his family in their time of mourning and must now be wondering what the ticket agent will say the next time he tries to board a plane.
Overweight man barred from flight, misses uncle's funeral originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 17:30:00 EST. Welcome to Thanksgiving week here at Gadling! I'm sure you're all dying to read about pilgrimages and turkeys. I think I'll spare you those topics for when it gets to crunch time -- on Wednesday. In the meantime, here are the latest and greatest travel stories from around the web. Hope you all have a great start to the week!

I didn't realize there were so many travel contests going on during the holiday season! That would obviously make sense, but this great list gives us the 411 on how you can enter and win. [via About.com]

Photography is my weak suit when it comes to traveling. Here are some really helpful tips on how to improve your photo-taking skills. [via Journey Etc]

When the weather gets warmer, I am hoping to make it to eastern Europe -- and I'll be taking this guide to eastern European food with me. [via Travel Fusion]

Talk about a different way to travel! How about travel by color? [via Open Travel]

They depict Buddhist tales and images of the Buddha and various Bodhisattvas.

The addition of new drainage systems has stopped some of the leakage of water through tiny cracks in the stone, but recent heavy rains have made the caves develop new leaks.

Archaeological Survey officials are monitoring the situation and trying to decide what to do next. Memories of a another Buddhist cave complex, the Bagh Caves, is making them tread lightly. Bad conservation methods at that site led to their almost complete destruction by seepage in the 1950s and 60s.

India is putting new emphasis on conservation as it tries to add more sites to the World Heritage List. Hopefully the folks at the Archaeological Survey of India will win the battle to preserve India's heritage. I met some of their archaeologists the last couple of times I went to India and they're a dedicated bunch, despite having to struggle with bureaucracy, insufficient funds, and the sheer vastness of their task.
Ancient Buddhist caves under threat originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 15:30:00 EST. In the United States, it's lost $58.5 billion and cut 158,000 jobs. There never seems to be an answer, and news of an industry in jeopardy has become routine. So, .

But, it will be different this time. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says it will not be "just another advisory committee."

On his Department of Transportation blog, LaHood writes, "I am not commissioning some report to fill space on my bookshelf. This committee will make a difference."

He continues:

"Look, without a financially strong aviation industry, we will be unable to compete in domestic and international commerce. We could also fall behind in addressing our own infrastructure needs. So we must begin this important conversation in order to ensure a viable, competitive U.S. aviation industry."

But, he has his work cut out for him, as does the advisory committee. The estimated price tag to fix the most vexing problems the industry faces is $20 billion. And, many of the recommendations from the last two panels were never implemented.

Continue reading Another "blue ribbon" panel to fix the airline industry

Another "blue ribbon" panel to fix the airline industry originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 15:00:00 EST. The promotion is done as a "try before you buy", which is a great way to get introduced to the joy of inflight Internet access.

To get the free session, all you need to do is create a new Gogo Inflight account. After that, you can surf the web for the entire duration of the flight. Since these flights are some of the longest domestic flights available, you'll be saving $12.95 with this freebie.

Wi-Fi access is offered on all United Airlines p.s. flights. These premium transcontinental flights operate between New York JFK and Los Angeles / San Francisco. Seats on p.s. flights all offer an AC power port, making it easier to stay online for the entire flight.
But safer than shaking hands." />Researchers in London have found that kissing on the cheek is far more hygienic than shaking hands. This may be good or bad news for you this holiday season, depending on how close you really want to get to your relatives.

"Debrett's warns people to observe proper etiquette by kissing others on the cheek instead of the lips and to avoid touching the person being kissed except on the shoulder or the upper arms," reports Yahoo.

If you're sick, you're likely to be sneezing, handling tissues, rubbing your eyes, and basically, a lot of germs end up on your hands. Then, if you shake hands with someone, your germs end up on their hands, and consequently in their eyes, on their silverware or even on their food. So, keep your hands to yourself.

If you're not feeling well, you should probably just stay home this year, lest family members hear you coughing and suddenly don't want to talk to you. If you're healthy and hamthrax-free, remember to wash your hands often and go for the cheek kissing to stay safe.
How European.

And speaking of Europe, if you're traveling internationally, check out Times Online's guide to how many cheek kisses are appropriate in various European countries.

Okay. You know it's big. So let's set aside that superlative, even though it's absolutely true. The Oasis of the Seas is ginormous: the longest, the tallest, the widest.

More of interest is how it measures up as an experience. I'm writing this from the press lounge on Deck 4, which Royal Caribbean has set up for the journalists that it invited to test out its glorious new $1.4 billion mortgage-cum-cruise ship. When you're talking about 17 decks and 2,700 staterooms, you need a lot of time to nose around and even more time to process.

So far, though, this ship is astounding, partly because Royal Caribbean threw some of the old strictures overboard. It's no longer concerned about width restrictions -- the Oasis is too fat to ever go through the Panama Canal -- and once rules like those are jettisoned, new designs can sweep in.
Continue reading On board the Oasis of the Seas: What's it like?

On board the Oasis of the Seas: What's it like? originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 13:30:00 EST. Over a year ago, I reviewed the SkyRest Travel Pillow for SkyMall Monday. It was the fourth product ever to get the SkyMall Monday treatment. In retrospect, it should have been first, as it is perhaps the most iconic SkyMall product ever. You proved that in our SkyMall Monday reader poll by voting it the Gadling reader favorite. In response to your overwhelming support of the SkyRest Travel Pillow, I vowed to give it a proper hands-on review. And I am proud to say that I have done just that. Earlier this month, I flew from LaGuardia to Ft. Lauderdale with the SkyRest to see just how comfortable it is. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a very special SkyMall Monday. Here is my actual review of the SkyRest Travel Pillow.

Continue reading SkyMall Monday: SkyRest Travel Pillow ACTUAL REVIEW

SkyMall Monday: SkyRest Travel Pillow ACTUAL REVIEW originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 13:00:00 EST.
The holiday season is a tough one for air travelers. Bad weather, oversold flights and flight cancellations can really screw up your holiday plans. Sadly, when things do go wrong, airport staff are not always able/willing to assist, and when they do, the line to reach the desk can be huge.

Thankfully, if you have an iPhone, you really do "have an app for that". In this lineup, you'll find six iPhone apps that can help survive the worst the airport throws at you.
Continue reading The iPhone holiday airport survival guide

The iPhone holiday airport survival guide originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 12:30:00 EST. The FAA, NTSB and even Congress are looking into ways to improve air safety after the 49 people were killed in the Colgan Air accident in February-the only fatal accident in the U.S. so far in 2009.

I'd be willing to wager that more money goes toward ensuring the safety of the flying public than to life saving procedures or infrastructure in any other industry or activity. I've likely benefited from that investment, with far fewer of my colleagues lost in airplane accidents in the past ten years than in any previous decade.

But it's easy to become hyper-focused on ways to make air travel safer without considering the opportunity costs. As a society, we have a limited amount of resources we can use to save lives. And somehow we tend to overlook the fact that, on average, 123 people are killed every day in the U.S. while driving in automobiles. That's equivalent to an airliner crashing every day. Clearly that would be unacceptable.

But there are still a few areas of low-hanging fruit that could make air travel safer at a relatively low cost. Here are my top three:

Airway Offsetting

Today airplanes usually fly between two published points, essentially creating a 'road' in the sky called an airway. When these airways were designed, they were given four miles left and right of the imaginary centerline. GPS equipped airplanes occupy just a few hundred feet of that width, since they now fly very close to the center of the airway.

Air Traffic Control does an amazingly good job keeping airplanes at different altitudes to prevent opposite direction traffic from colliding.

But because of the precision of GPS equipped airliners, if two airplanes were heading in opposite directions on the same airway at the same altitude, a collision is relatively certain.
