I don’t see the upgrade bar on this blog yet, but it should be soon. Since 2.8.1 is now released, I wish Dev4Press would redo their benchmarks.

An excellent article you write needs to be shared, and by far there are lots of plugins that allow publishers to add options to allow readers to share content with others.

However I came across a really interesting and aesthetically done plugin that can draw attention to sharing. The plugin called Sexy Bookmarks definitely draws attention.

The plugin allows you to setup custom username that will be used for sharing on twitter, a custom category for sharing on Yahoo Buzz and also a choice of URL shortening service you can use, including your own custom URL shortening in the form of Twitter Friendly Links plugin.

I just started using it on my personal blog and definitely find that it adds more charm to sharing.

What are your thoughts about this plugin? do let me know.

No software is perfect no matter how perfectly it is written, as there are external factors that may interfere with its working and cause problems, likewise with WordPress, which is always tested thoroughly before releasing them to general public, there may be areas of problems for users.

If you do face a problem, please do understand that there may be certain factors that may not have been tested for (and it is virtually impossible to test for every factor in this world) as there are so many different factors that cannot be accounted for while testing.

However if you do come across a problem with WordPress, don’t panic. The first thing you should do is to take stock of what the problem is and then head to the WordPress forums and search for similar problems like yours, more likely than not you will find a solution for your problem.

If you do not find a answer, create a new forum post and describe your problem as clearly and in a detailed format as you can. Keeping the forum post detailed helps, here are some things you may want to include.

Which area of your blog is having a problem (admin area, write panel, home page etc)

What is the problem you are facing.

If you can provide Screenshots of your problems, it may help others who want to help you out and make it easier for them to understand.

Any other details that may sum up your problem.

More likely than not you will receive a answer to your question within a short span of time.

It also helps to keep in contact with people who have advanced knowledge as they may help you out if you come across problem.

One more area where you can get help fast is social networking, you can ask for help there, quite recently one of the persons I know posted that he had a problem with one of his sites on Twitter, I saw that and messaged him, we had a quick chat and the problem was solved in 15 minutes.

All in all help is just a matter of forum post or social networking entry away, if all fails, there is also a WordPress support service which provides support through phone at WordPress Help Center, phone calls under 3 minutes are free, anything above that will be paid support.

Are there any better ways to troubleshoot problems with WordPress? Do you want to add to this list, do feel free to do that through your comments.

I have been following the WordPress Theme GPL discussion very closely for as long as I have been involved with WordPress and I am glad that Matt, with the help of the Software Freedom Law Center, has cleared the air. There has been a lot of valuable discussion surrounding this blog post and the issue, here is a small list of what I have read.

Lloyd’s analysis on GPL and themes

Daniel’s view from the other side of the fence (be sure to read through the comments, there is a lot of wisdom there)

WPTavern’s forum post on the blog dev blog post and the forum post(s) leading up to it

Brian Gardner wants the community to move on

Other miscellaneous posts on the issue

I am a huge proponent of the GPL and consider it to be one of the primary pillars of WordPress, both as a piece of software, and as a community. This debate has, from time to time, devolved into whether the GPL is a valuable licensing schema for software such as WordPress. I have seen/read quite persuasive arguments on why a more liberal IP licensing could be beneficial for the community and for the software. But in all of this debate and conjecture, I could not help thinking about how it would affect one group of people. Our users.

I help make “business happen with software” at my day job. My team supports a couple of hundred thousand users in helping them perform mundane (to them) tasks. We also try to help our small company cope with the technology needs of a cutting edge industry and compete on that edge with corporations that have IT budgets that parallel our company’s entire revenue. We are so small and so busy that as long as we are complying with the licensing of a particular piece of software, we are good to roll. We use GPL software, we use proprietary software, we use CC licensed software, we use Apache licensed software and everything in between. The funny thing is that our users could care less what we use, as long as they can do what they want to do without having to call the help desk or spend too much time doing it. That is exactly where WordPress proudly shines like the Sun.

Matt’s vision for WordPress is to make it invisible, to help its users do what they do best without having a single thought about the tool they are using. To that goal, the GPL has no effect except for circumstantial reasons. The creators would also like the software to be freely available to anyone, for any purpose. The software should be open to modifications and freely distributable at no cost and without permission from the creators. The software should be extensible in so much that the core code does not have to be modified for cursory changes. The GPL as linked with WordPress, has unequivocally helped WordPress and its community get where it is today. It is not the only thing WordPress has going for it (thankfully), but it certainly is here to stay and has proven itself over and over again for us. It is just a licensing schema that bolsters the core philosophies of the people behind the code and helps them accomplish their goals with the software, get “business to happen” so to speak.

In all of our vacillations, are we getting away from our core philosophies? The freedoms that the GPL and WordPress have offered to the folks who choose to make money from WordPress, are also designed to help another, larger group of people. The people who use the software.

If in our exuberance to make everyone happy, we trip up and let our millions of users down, it would then truly be a catastrophe.

We conducted a small poll recently, where we asked WordPress users the method they use to post content to their blogs. The poll is now closed and here are the results of the poll.

And the winner and best way to post content to your blog is the WordPress Dashboard Write Panel, coming in a distant 2nd is desktop applications like Windows Live Writer.

So why do people prefer using the write panel? There could be several reasons for this, the most important one I can think of is that, when writing posts using the write panel users have access to the features plugins provide them with.

Another reason I think is not many users may be aware of the availability of desktop applications for blogging. Also many people may really feel comfortable blogging using the write panel too.

On the other hand desktop applications like WLW do provide users with a familiar interface and the flexibility to blog from their desktops.

What are your views on this poll results? Do let me know.

The Official WordPress Commercial Theme Directory is now open. It is linked off the WordPress Extend and is part of the parent theme directory set of links. It is not as much a directory as it is a listing of sites that offer commercial GPL themes. It lists the philosophies, a few words about the business models and the need for the encouragement, a list of screenshots and links to the various theme sites and then a list of criterion for inclusion into this site.

I like the succinct explanation of the purpose and the listing criterion seem simple and straightforward to follow. Send your information to themes at wordpress dot org to get included in the list. From the site, if you want to be included:

Distribute 100% GPL themes, including artwork and CSS.

Have professional support options, and optionally customization.

Your site should be complete, well-designed, up to date, and professional looking.

Include a haiku about yourself to be included.

I am not sure how long this list is going to get, but I am curious to see how this page evolves. I am also glad to see a larger number of GPL based Premium theme vendors on there than I was initially surmising. Cool!

WordPress Configuration Tricks : If you have ever installed WordPress and wanted to know what else you could do with your wp-config.php file, this is the blog post to read. As Ozh points out in the comments, a couple of tricks were left out but nothing that could not be remedied with a simple Google search (e.g. WP_HTTP) as long as you know what you are looking for.

Tips from that page that got me thinking (things that make you go hmmmmm?) include moving your wp-content directory, increasing your memory limit, changing the autosave interval, turning on debugging and finally the ability to specify a log file for errors. All of this through the wondrous wp-config.php file. The list is quite exhaustive.

While you are there, make sure you subscribe to the blog. Chris and Jeff are putting out some good stuff!

They are testing three version of WordPress including 2.6.5, 2.7.1 and 2.8 (I wish they would have waited for 2.8.1 to be released). This first set of tests were performed on the WordPress admin interface and other benchmarks will follow. While the quantities are not as important, I think the trends are interesting. Though not independently confirmed, the growing girth of the admin interface is obvious. In contrast, my test WordPress 2.8.1 blog has shown marked improvements in load times and memory usage as compared to WordPress 2.8. It will be interesting to see how the load and memory usage trends of the WordPress admin interface change with future versions as the WordPress team turns their attention towards optimizing the admin panel under the hood. (as Matt has said in many of his State of the Word addresses) via @weblogtooltips
