Today the number of plugins on the WordPress Plugin Directory has reached 12,000!
Here is a list of the best New plugins I’ve tried for you, please leave your feedback about it.

Publish Confirmation by BloggingBookShelf

Have you ever accidentally published a post before it was ready? Yeah. It sucks. This plugin takes care of that. When you hit the “Publish” button after writing a post, a small dialog box appears asking you if you’re sure you want to publish the post. You can either click OK or CANCEL. And that’s it! Super simple and no more acidentally published posts.

Gravatar Hovercards by Otto

So this is one isn’t an official plugin and thus isn’t in the WordPress plugin directory but I thought it was worth mentioning. WordPress.com has implemented a new feature which lets you hover over a user’s Gravatar to get additional information about them and Otto has created a jQuery/WP plugin that lets you do this on any WordPress blog. You can see it in action on his personal blog.

NND Facebook Gravatar Grabber by NerdNextDoor

If a user or commenter has a link to their Facebook Profile Page as their URL link, this plugin extract their Facebook profile picture and use it as their Gravatar across the site. This will work in comments as well as in the user admin area, and anywhere that Gravatars may be used.

Visitor Analytics by Suny Tse

This plugin provides pretty detailed information on your latest visitors, including their IP address, number and frequency of visits, time spent on the site and which pages they visited. All of this information is available in Google Analytics or any log analyzer (ie Awstats), however it can be nice to have this quick summary easily accessible in your WordPress admin section.

Diagnosis by GamajoTech

Diagnosis adds a subpage to the dashboard where the main administrator of the WordPress installation can view technical data about the server in an easy manner along with a suitable explanation. Most fields also have a link to an appropriate Wikipedia article.

Pronamic Page Widget by pronamic, remcotolsma

This plugin makes it easy to add pages as widgets to your sidebars. Developers can also easily create templates for the different page widgets on different sidebars.

WordPress Firewall 2 by Matthew Pavkov

This WordPress plugin investigates web requests with simple, WordPress-specific heuristics, to identify and stop the most obvious attacks. It intelligently whitelists and blacklists pathological-looking phrases, based on which field they appear within, in a page request (unknown/numeric parameters vs. known post bodies, comment bodies, etc.). Its purpose is not to replace prompt and responsible upgrading, but rather to mitigate 0-day attacks and let bloggers sleep better at night.

Mystique Extra Nav Icons by frasten

Adds a number of social icons (customizable) above your navigation bar that slide up when you hover on them. Check out the screenshots and the demo for a better idea of how they function.

Anyfeed Slideshow by Soleil Golden

Anyfeed Slideshow is a plugin that adds a slideshow widget to your library. This widget is fully customizable and will display a feed of images from any RSS or Atom feed provided to it.

Doing the wrong things in the AdSense and other forms of advertisements, whether intentionally or unintentionally, will result in a severe penalty, may get you banned and even have your account Blocked.

Do not just think of the strategies you will be using to generate more earnings. Consider some things first before you actually get involved.

Hidden texts – Filling your advertisement page with texts to small to read, has the same color as the background and using css for the sole purpose of loading them with rich keywords content and copy will earn you a penalty award that is given to those who are hiding links.

Page cloaking – There is a common practice of using browser or bot sniffers to serve the bots of a different page other than the page your visitors will see. Loading a page with a bot that a human user will never see is a definite no-no. This is tricking them to click on something that you want but they may not want to go to.

Multiple submissions – Submitting multiple copies of your domain and pages is another thing to stay away from. For example, trying to submit a URL of an AdSense as two separate URL’s is the same as inviting trouble and even termination. Likewise, this is a reason to avoid auto submitters for those who are receiving submissions. Better check first if your domain is submitted already an a certain search engine before you try to submit to it again. If you see it there, then move on. No point contemplating whether to try and submit there again.

Link farms – Be wary of who and what are you linking your AdSense to. The search engines know that you cannot control your links in. But you can certainly control what you link to. Link farming has always been a rotten apple in the eyes of search engines, especially Google. That is reason enough to try and avoid them. Having a link higher than 100 on a single page will classify you as a link farm so try and not to make them higher than that.

Page rank for sale – If you have been online for quite some time, you will notice that there are some sites selling their PR links or trading them with other sites. If you are doing this, expect a ban anytime in the future. It is okay to sell ads or gain the link. But doing it on direct advertisement of your page rank is a way to get on search engines bad side.

Doorways – This is similar to cloaking pages. The common practice of a page loaded with choice keyword ads aimed at redirecting visitors to another “user-friendly” page is a big issue among search engines. There are many s3o firms offering this kind of services. Now that you know what they actually are, try to avoid them at all costs.

Multiple domains having the same content – In case you are not aware of it, search engines look at domains IP’s, registry dates and many others. Having multiple domains having the same exact content is not something you can hide from them. The same goes with content multiplied many times on separate pages, sub domains and forwarding multiple domains to the same content.

You have to know that seo isn’t a magic bullet, It’s

Make sure you fill in your meta tags with a good title, description, and the right keywords. I personally don’t think the keywords meta-tag is nearly as important as everyone else on here does, but it gives me a way to organize my keywords list for me to reference. When you start having many different websites, it’s good to include whatever notes to yourself you can. When you come back to work on an older site you might not remember eveything you were thinking before. The metatags help you remember your site info as much as it helps the se figure it out. A good rule of thumb is that anything that won’t hurt you for SEO and might help you should use, and use correctly. Don’t use the same metatags for every page on your site. Take the time to make them be specific to each page.

Create good content. Then make sure that you have some decent content. Structure your content correctly, make a few title headers in the content that include keywords (use header tags h1, h2, etc.), try to have a keyword density around 2% in your content, and maybe 4% for the whole page including the metatags, alt tags, anchors, etc. Avoid duplicate content between different pages on your site. Remember, your content isn’t just something to get google to like your site, it is the whole point of your site. The content and how you structure it is what will make visitors do what you want when they get there. If it’s crap they’ll just leave, and 99% of them won’t leave by click on your adsense or affilliate link, they’ll just close the window or use the back button.

Be sure that your .htaccess is set up correctly for canonicalization. I usually set up a 301 for all www requests to redirect to non-www urls. If you don’t set that up then every single page on your site can appear to google as having at least one duplicate. If that’s the only thing wrong on your site it isn’t going to kill you, but it’s so easy to fix. If you don’t know how to set up a redirect in your .htaccess file then just do a search, there are many other threads explaining it. Also, .htaccess only apples if your on an Apache server, Windows servers do it a little differently, if that applies to you then just search google to find out how to do it. You should also specify which you prefer, www or not-www in google tools if you use it. (If you don’t then you really should, I recommend you set yourself up an account for webmaster tools and analytics.)

Make a robots.txt file and I like to include a favicon because without them the robots will trigger file not found errors on your server. Be sure to configure your robots.txt correctly. Make a custom 404 page. If your site has more than just a couple of pages then also create a sitemap called sitemap.xml file. It’s not a bad idea to just create a sitemap anyway no matter what, it lets you define the structure of your site to the crawlers. Just search google if you don’t know how to do any of that, it’s very basic and you can find exact instructions within a minute when you do a search.

Other than that there isn’t a lot more you can do for on-site SEO. When people ask about SEO they’re always thinking of on-site SEO, but thats the easy and quick part. Just do it and get on with it.

Everything else is off-site SEO and involves building backlinks and promotion.

This is where you need to focus your efforts. This is where the magic bullet is, if there really is one.

Create relevant articles containing your keywords, include backlinks using keyword anchors, and submit to article directories. Article directories are mostly authority sites and your article becomes a relevant backlink to your site. Then create profiles and accounts on blogs, social networking sites, forums etc. Include a link to your website whenever you do that and each one of those become backlinks as well. Whenever possible include keyword anchors and title or alt tags on those backlinks. Don’t always use the same anchors, vary it up a little, use 3 or 4 different keywords and even do a few with some non keyword anchors. You are trying to look as though a lot of different real people have taken a liking to your site, if it were natural then all links wouldn’t be exactly the same, so you want to simulate that same type of randomness. Linkwheels and other backlinking strategies are all about simulating the natural events that happen as a site grows in popularity. If you can do it successfully then the SE’s will give you good position in the listings, and then hopefully what you are simulating can become reality. The point of all of it is to get traffic.

Thats the end of it.
Go back and watch your stats to see what keywords are getting the most traffic to your site, analyze the data a little bit and if you need to, remove or add keywords to your content and tags, and adjust the anchors your using in your backlinks.

Continue building links. Remember you are trying to simulate to google that your site is gaining in popularity. When that happens naturally, people are always adding links to your site. Since you are trying to look natural you have to do the same thing. Linkbuilding never stops completely.

Top ten of Most Popular Social Bookmarking Websites.

The number of social bookmarking sites has exploded in the last year, leaving someone new the space probably a bit overwhelmed at where to start. If you are new to social networking understand that each social networking site is different, it attracts a different audience with different interests. Thus what interests someone on Reddit might not appeal to anyone on Digg.

So who are the main players in the social bookmaking space? And what is the profile of the typical user of these social bookmarking sites? The answers below might surprise you!

Digg.com
Digg is the most popular and notable of the social bookmarking sites. Quantcast estimates that that Digg has about 25 million unique visitors a month. The audience is predominantly male (65%), between 25-34 years of age, with a household income between 30k and 100k. Digg’s demographics have changed as it has become more popular (mainstream). Not to long ago the Digg profile was male, under 25 who made less than 30k a year. Social media topics that do well on Digg include interesting photos, anything anti-Microsoft and lists (top 10, etc).

Propeller.com
Propeller (formely Netscape) is comfortable the second biggest social bookmarking site behind Digg with over 5.8 million monthly uniques, of which 3.6 million (62%) are in the U.S. Netscape also attracts a male biased audience (54) , that is slightly older (45-54 is biggest age group), and 55% of Propeller.com visitors have an household income over $60k.

StumbleUpon
Stumbleupon.com reports over 4.5 million members and Quantcast classifies it as a top 5,000 site that has about 1.5 million unique visitors a month from the U.S. The audience is male biased (56%) and between the ages of 45-54 (22% of visitors). The older demographic also skews the household income with 51% of visitors having a household income of over $60k.

Reddit.com
Reddit is becoming a very popular social bookmarking site with about 1.2 million unique visitors in the U.S., making it slightly larger than Del.icio.us. Reddit attracts a predominantly male (57%) audience that is between the ages of 35-44 (25%). With 65% of the audience having a household income of between $30 and $100k, Reddit is a mainstream social networking site. As a result, political, environmental, business and entertainment news does well with this audience.

Del.icio.us
Del.icio.us is the oldest social bookmarking site and Quantcast classifies it as a top 5,000 site that gets about 1.1 million unique visitors a month from the U.S. The audience is male (53%) and about 47% of them are over 45. Similar to StumbleUpon, 51% of visitors having a household income of over $60k.

Newsvine.com
Newsvine is a top 10,000 site that reaches over 362K U.S. monthly uniques. The site attracts a slightly male slanted audience (54%) and 51% of the users have a household income under $60k.

Fark.com
Fark.com is a much more trafficked site than people expect. With 1,972,698 monthly unique visitors in the U.S., it is bigger than StumbleUpon, Del.icio.us and Reddit. The Fark audience is heavily male (69%), between the ages of 25-34 and a household income under $60k (52%). The Fark audience likes interesting, bizarre and amusing news stories, along with regular photo manipulation contests.

Blinklist.com
Blinklist.com is a top 10,000 site that reaches over 353K U.S. monthly uniques. The site appeals to a more male group (59%) who are between the age of 25 and 54. About 54% of the audience earns over $60k a year.

Clipmarks.com
Clipmarks reaches over 205K U.S. monthly uniques. The site appeals to a male biased audience (58%) with a household income of $30-60k. The site attracts almost equal amounts of people between 25 and 54.

Shoutwire.com
This site reaches approximately 70,742 U.S. monthly uniques. The site appeals to a more male (60%), younger audience (38% are under 24).

So what does the demographic data tells us? One is that the typical social bookmarking site user is male, between the ages of 35-54 with a household income of $60k or more a year. Is this your target audience? If it is not, then these are probable not the main social networking sites that you should be focusing on.

Note that Digg attracts more users than all the other social bookmarking sites combined. Similar to how MySpace dominates the social networking space (and gets the lion share of advertising dollars), Digg is the dominate social bookmarking site. If you are trying to reach this audience, then you have to include Digg in your marketing efforts, simply because the audience is so large, relative to everyone else in this space.

This is an awesome interview with the co-founder of Wordpress Matt Mullenweg.

As a 19-year-old college student in 2003, Matt Mullenweg developed what has become the largest self-hosted blogging tool on the web. Two years later, he founded Automattic, which runs the content management system for WordPress and a handful of other web tools.

WordPress — still free and open source — is currently used by more than 12% of the top million websites (this one included). In a recent e-mail exchange, Mullenweg discussed the open source movement, the shifting personal web publishing world, and the future of WordPress.

1. How did WordPress change the Internet?

Well we’re not done yet, but two things WordPress has been able to exemplify is that Open Source can create great user experiences and that it’s possible to have a successful commercial entity and a wider free software community living and working in harmony.

2. What is the biggest shift that has happened in personal publishing since WordPress.org was launched in 2003 and WordPress.com in 2005?

To me the biggest shift has been in mobile. From the first time I held an iPhone, the space has evolved quickly, and people have shifted from reading content on their desktops to smartphones and iPads, even long-form stuff. Twitter is the ultimate service for the mobile age — its simplification and constraint of the publishing medium to 140 characters is perfectly complementary to a mobile experience. People still need longer stuff, but they see the headline on Twitter or Facebook.

3. Automattic continues to expand in terms of customers, VIP services and acquisitions. Any plans to go public or broach the IPO pool?

We love the freedom afforded by being an independent company and plan to stay that way for the foreseeable future. In that scenario, being publicly held is one of the obvious liquidity options for shareholders, but in an environment where even companies with massive revenues like Zynga and Facebook aren’t public, I think for Automattic it’s many years off and not something that influences our decisions day-to-day.

4. How do you balance your commitment to open source with your capitalistic ambitions?

I don’t balance them — they’re both out in full force. The more money Automattic makes, the more we invest into Free and Open Source software that belongs to everybody and services to make that software sing. The more I make, the more I donate to non-profits spreading Open Source to the world.

5. What do you think are the biggest concerns facing the open source movement?

The biggest challenge for Open Source is that as it enters the consumer market, as projects like WordPress and Firefox have done, you have to create a user experience that is on par or better than the proprietary alternatives. Traditional Open Source development models, like the Apache one, are not set up to do that. In server software options are good — in consumer web interfaces they’re a cognitive burden.

While I personally believe strongly in the philosophy and ideology of the Free Software movement, you can’t win people over just on philosophy; you have to have a better product too.

6. WordPress.com has adopted many of the features that Tumblr, Posterous and other microblogging services have popularized. Is this going to continue in the future? Any plans to integrate some of the WP.com microblogging tools into self-hosted WordPress.org sites?

Absolutely, and that’s all I can say for now.

What do you make of WordPress or Mullenweg’s approach to Open Source? Let us know in the comments.
