PPC requires the advertiser to bid on key words or key word phrases chosen by the advertiser. There are many PPC advertising services available to choose from. Google AdWords and Overture are probably the two most popular in use today.

The PPC search engine allows you to buy a top position in the search engine results for the particular keyword or phrase you choose. The PPC search engines can deliver targeted and qualified visitors to your web page at an economical advertising cost if you manage the program carefully with a clear objective. PPC provides the advertiser with assurance that their ad is being delivered to the targeted audience.

PPC advertising uses a bidding process where the highest bidder or highest activity value, depending on the search engine, for a particular keyword or phrase will receive the top placement on the search engine results page. The PPC search engine will place your ad text in a special location on the results page when a user searches on your PPC keyword or phrase search term.

As an example, Google AdWords appear on the right side of the search results page while the organic (i.e., natural) search results appear on the left side of the page. In the case of Yahoo! If your conversion rate (the number of visitors that buy your product) is 1.0%, only 1 of your visitors will buy your product out of 100 visitors. Your net profit for every 100 visitors from your PPC campaign will be $5 ($15 profit margin less $10 for PPC).

It is a good idea to experiment with the different PPC search engines to find the one that works best for you. In addition, you need to spend the necessary time and effort to select the keyword or keyword phrase that has a profitable conversion rate for your specific web page. A higher conversion rate implies more profits to you.

Try to avoid the senseless bidding war with your competitors. Seriously evaluate whether having the number one placement position is worth the PPC price you pay. What about position numbers two, three and so on. Will you get enough clicks in one of those positions to make your PPC campaign a success? Do not automatically assume that you have to be in position number one to make a lot of money using PPC. It all comes down to experimenting and testing.

There is no such thing as the perfect PPC campaign. Evaluate the performance of your PPC campaigns on a continuous basis. Are you leaving money on the table by not adjusting your PPC bid to a lower level? Should you increase the bid price to get more traffic? Is your conversion rate changing? What are your competitors doing? Should you be considering different keywords in your campaign? PPC advertising is a great way to get traffic but at a definite price. PPC requires a thorough knowledge of the PPC search engines that you use and constant monitoring and evaluation of your campaigns.

External linking is the largest factor in determining PageRank, and is the place where you have the least control. There is no way to force another web master to link to your site, especially when they already have a high PageRank. For this reason and many more, increasing your PageRank is difficult, but important nonetheless. In this section we will discuss why external linking is important to the PageRank of your web pages, what the correct way to link is, who to request links from and why these links have such importance.
The actual amount of effect that Google’s PageRank has on the ranking of a website or web pages is debated, and it is probably safe to say that Google will not be letting us know anytime soon. What we do know is that a web page’s PR does play a role in Google’s indexing and Google’s ranking. The higher a web page’s PageRank, the more frequently it will be crawled and refreshed. While in most cases, a higher PR will accompany a higher-ranking site; it is not always the case. As we mentioned earlier, a high PR can sometimes be the icing on the cake, or what gives a strong hold on a good ranking.PageRank is a pretty complex mathematical calculation, but can be broken down into a simple version. PageRank is Google’s scoring of Page A. This scoring is based on the external links that point to Page A, and certain variables within the pages that the links come from. A link from Page B is held as a vote for Page A, and if Page B has a high PageRank, this will is taken into account and will have a positive effect when calculating the PR of Page A. If Page B, C, and D, all link to Page A, but Page B, C, and D all have a PR of 2, then this will be taken into account when calculating the web page’s PageRank. In the second situation, the pages with low PageRank’s that link to Page A will not affect Page A’s PR in a negative effect, but will also not affect it in a positive way.
Another very important part of the PageRank calculation is the use of on page criteria and title tags by Google when determining PageRank. When Google is determining the PR of Page A by evaluating the votes, or links, from Page B and others, it will also take into account the on page criteria and title tags of Page B and other links that are pointing to Page A. If Page A’s target keywords and theme are “widgets” then this is what Google will look for in the external links that are pointing to your site. If Page B, C, and D all have a high PR (above 6), and all have the keyword “widgets” in the on page criteria and title tag, Google will notice this and use these links when determining Page A’s Page Rank. What does this mean?
This means that when contacting other websites to link to your site in the attempt to build and increase your Page Rank, these web pages that you are requesting a link from should be relevant and of the same theme and market of the page that you are requesting they link to. Perform a search for your target keyword in Google, ODP, and Yahoo to start, and check the top 40 ranking sites. Can you find a place where they would place a link to your web page? If so, contact them and request that they link to your site. Be prepared for them to ask for a reciprocal link. Dig through your category and related categories in the Google directory, and contact sites that are listed high within each category. Google’s directory will show you the PageRank of each site listed in the category, which help you to determine which site’s are of the highest value to contact.
Another important part of the external linking campaign is the actual links and the way that they are formatted. Following the same example that we have been using, let’s assume that you are attempting to improve the ranking for a web page that targets “widgets”. Still following the example above, you would contact other websites with a high PageRank that target “widgets” and ask them to link to your “widgets” page. To maximize results from these links, you would want the link text pointing to your site to read “widgets”, or other link text that is keyword rich and descriptive.
To continue upon the external linking development for your website, there is another point that must be made that will be crucial to the successful building of PageRank. One common mistake when building PageRank is that webmasters or search engine optimization professionals will contact other webmasters and request that they only link to the homepage or the top level of a section. This can have two effects, which will be explained shortly, but the pages that are below these pages linked to will not encounter the full effects of being linked to.
If you request a link to a top-level page or the homepage of your site, this will have a positive effect on this page. If the PageRank of this page increases, then the page below it will increase (if the internal linking structure is correct), but it will still be one PageRank number below the page above it that was linked to. If you have quality content pages that are deep in your site structure, you will have to go further than this to increase the PageRank for those pages.
Let’s follow an example. Your site’s main topic is “flowers”, with one of the next sub-directories being “roses”. Within the sub-directory “roses”, you have 4 different sub-directories: “yellow roses”, “red roses”, “pink roses”, and “white roses”. Within these 4 sub-directories, you have a number of pages dealing with each type of flower. The way that this site is set up follows the themed approach.
Now let’s suppose that your site is of decent stature and Google gives the homepage a PageRank of 6. (A PageRank of 6 is good, but it is not good enough that you wouldn’t want to increase it.) With the home page at 6, the second level, “roses”, would have a PR of 5, each sub-category, “yellow roses” for example, would have a PR of 4, and the pages below that would have a PR of 3. These sub-categories and pages that are below are the niche keywords and the ones that are going to bring you the targeted traffic that is easily converted.
To increase the PageRank of these pages and sub-categories, first you need to follow the internal linking structure that was outlined and illustrated earlier in this tutorial. Next you need to work on the external linking, or link popularity, for each page and sub-category page. Following the example above, you should start with the homepage and work your way down. Since the theme of the homepage is “flowers”, search for pages and sites with a high PR that have the same theme of “flowers” and request that they link to your homepage. The second level is “roses”, so you would want to search for web pages and websites that have the theme or main topic “roses” and request that they link to your “roses” section. (If you have them link to the homepage, this will not work) See the pattern forming here?
One problem that you may encounter is finding sites or pages with a high PR that match your theme. For example, it may be difficult to find sites that are dedicated to simply “white roses”, and not just “roses” or “flowers”. Instead of the desired linking pages having a PR of 6 or 7, they have a mere 3 or 4. If this is the case, you should ask for the links from these pages with a mediocre PageRank, and then continue your search. Seek out more of these sites to make up for the low PageRank. Once you have contacted these sites within your theme or main topic, you should contact some of the sites from the level above and request that they link to these pages.
Your site and pages within your site must meet certain criteria for this to work, with one piece being the most important: the site and pages within your site must be quality content that people will actually want to link up to. This is one of the basic points of PageRank: Google can tell which pages and sites are authorities as they have a large number of high quality links pointing them. If your site is full of spam, or otherwise undesired content, it may be difficult to get the quality links, whether internal or external, that you need for a high PR.

Your Alexa Rating - Is It Really That Important?

A discussion in my forum has prompted this newsletter as I think it is important for any online entrepreneur to understand how Alexa ratings work in order that they can understand why they may not be that important to the success of their online business. Too many people make the mistake of concentrating entirely on improving their Alexa ratings but at the end of the day, these rankings are just numbers - they won't put money in the bank.

Alexa is a company owned by the Amazon group and it aims to rank every single website on the Internet in terms of how much traffic it is receiving.

Quite simply, the lower your Alexa ranking, the more traffic your website gets. The ideal scenario would be to have an Alexa ranking of '1'. This would mean, in theory, that your website receives more traffic than any other website in the world. Currently this position is held by Yahoo.com and as you would expect, other top sites include Microsoft, Google and eBay.

It is generally considered that a website with an Alexa rating of 100,000 or less is receiving a reasonable level of traffic but Alexa can be wildly misleading and very easily manipulated.

To understand why the rankings are misleading, you need to understand how Alexa gathers the data that it uses to create the rankings in the first place. This is really very simple - Alexa has a free toolbar that you can download and install within your Internet browser and this reports back to Alexa with the details of every single website that you visit.

Alexa can then use this information to see how many users are visiting a particular website. Then, because not every Internet user has the Alexa toolbar installed, Alexa will multiply the number of visitors by a specific margin to estimate the total number of visitors that a site may typically receive. The important word in the last sentence is 'estimate'.

Let's assume that the above multiplication margin is ten - that means that for each Alexa toolbar user that visits a specific web page, Alexa assumes that another nine non-toolbar users will also visit the same page. This means that if 100 toolbar users visit a specific web page on a given day, Alexa will take this as meaning that a total of 1000 people visited the same page in that 24 hour period.

This is where the figures can get distorted. If you have a website that attracts a higher than average number of Alexa toolbar users, then you are going to gain a lower Alexa rating because Alexa doesn't make any allowance for the fact that their toolbar users visit certain types of site more often. A typical example of this is Internet marketing sites. Most Internet entrepreneurs will have the Alexa toolbar installed because they like to see the Alexa rankings for sites as they visit them (the toolbar shows you this information as soon as you visit a site). But this means that if your website attracts a lot of Internet marketing-type visitors, then your Alexa rating will be inflated above what it should be.

Here is a true-life example:

There was a popular Internet marketing site for sale last year and it had an Alexa rating of about 19,000. I figured it must be getting heavy traffic but when I discussed the matter with the owner/seller, I found that it was only receiving 6000 unique visitors a month! The reason that the Alexa rating was so low was because the majority of these visitors had the Alexa toolbar installed and therefore the calculations were being thrown out massively.

It is also possible to purchase software that will generate false hits to your site using the Alexa technology so that Alexa is fooled into believing that more people are visiting your site. This pushes your Alexa ranking down.

At the end of the day though, what is the point of having a low Alexa rating if you are not making any sales? Sure it is nice to be able to say that your site is in the top 20,000 websites in the world but if the site isn't earning you an income, this ranking means very little (assuming that it was your intention for the site to earn you an income of course). Personally, I would much rather have a high Alexa ranking but a good income than a low ranking and minimal income.

Of course, there are benefits to the Alexa service and it can be worthwhile installing their toolbar. The toolbar will give you an indication of how busy a particular site is and in turn, how popular it is. This can be helpful when making a decision as to whether to make an online purchase for example. It is also handy for checking out your competitors :-)

Just don't get too hung up on Alexa as a measure of how well your business is doing. The real statistics that you should be watching are actual traffic numbers, conversion rates (ie. how many visitors actually buy something) and overall sales. These are the figures that will help you put cash in the bank and improve and grow your business.

Top 5 Search Engine Optimization Mistakes

There are a lot of ways to promote your website and, unfortunately, a lot of these methods are mistakes. Here is a list of some of the more common mistakes (often referred to as Black Hat SEO) that you should steer well clear of.

1. Bad Neighbourhoods

These sites are also known as free for all (FFA) pages and link farms. They serve no other purpose other than to list tens of thousands of unrelated websites. Not only will these sites not provide your site with any traffic, certain search engines will ban sites who participate.

2. Over Optimization

Optimizing your web pages for a particular search engine can be a good thing. Over-optimizing can defeat the purpose, however. Search engines are catching on quickly to pages that appear ‘over-optimized’. Stuffing keyphrases into your pages is the most common problem. Never use hidden (invisible) text to add keywords. You will get caught, and your site will get banned.

3. Doorway Pages

Doorway pages are orphaned web pages that are typically optimized for a particular keyphrase and a particular search engine. They are promoted to the search engine in an effort to achieve high rankings. They are not linked back to by any other page on the website and, as such, search engines are able to flush them out quite easily and penalize the entire site.

4. Traffic Generation Scams

Services that purport to drive lots and lots of traffic to your website are typically not very useful. The traffic tends to come from seedy places like domain names that have lapsed in payment or commonly misspelled domain entries. Most of the traffic that hits these pages is accidental and is therefore of no value to you. Other traffic may come from other participants in the program who are required to visit other websites to gain ‘credits’ for their own site. Again, this traffic is not targeted and therefore of no value. Some traffic may even be generated by automated software!

5. Shadow Domains

Shadow domains are small, optimized, supplementary websites designed to drive traffic to a different website. The way this works is that an SEO company will design and optimize a website on your behalf. The danger here is that the you do not own this new website; the SEO company does! This means that if the relationship sours, they may choose to redirect this site’s traffic to whomever they choose (see #4 above), or even sell the site to one of your competitors! Be very, very careful of this technique, as some supposed search engine ‘experts’ even use this method (no naming of names here, however).

One final note: Any company that tells you that it can achieve ‘guaranteed’ rankings is either lying to you or using some of these Black Hat techniques. Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee a number one result within (unpaid) search results. When choosing a search engine optimization company to work with, be sure you feel comfortable with them and trust them (e.g. money back guarantee). And if you decide to promote your website yourself, consider yourself a little better educated against these common mistakes.
