Many businesses are starting to use social media, and in particular Facebook, as another tool to build relationships and reach a wider circle of potential customers. It is also worth considering that a Social Networking presence now contributes to your search engine ranking – Bing and Google have both confirmed Facebook and Twitter are taken into account.

For some of us, social networking is fun and we find it easy keep an up to date presence but for others it is a mystery that they have neither the time nor the inclination to take further.

It is important that each business assess whether or not they need a social media presence – not all businesses will benefit from this. However, Facebook business pages are a great way to promote special deals or for your clients to place feedback (or even photos) of your business. Facebook Welcome and Special Promotion/Competition pages can give your Facebook presence extra personality and information.

We have created our own Welcome landing page (click here to view) and for a Specials page (click here to view). These additional pages can be themed to match your branding and colours and have additional functionality (such as the rotating images on the Welcome page)

Here at @ web one we can help you:

Analyse the options available and consider what benefits they offer your business.

Develop a social networking strategy which considers such questions as “What is the primary goal of my social networking strategy” and “Whose attention do I want to attract?”.

Plan the management of your page(s) – who’s going to update it, how often and with what.

Manage the initial stage of launching your social presence

Create personalised specials and landing pages

It is not often I spend minutes reading long emails from friends that have been copied from the net, but this caught my attention. A quick search revealed it is very widely promulated in many web sites/blogs, but maybe you have not read it before

In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment. The woman apologized to him and explained, “We didn’t have the green thing back in my day.”

The clerk responded, “That’s our problem today.
The former generation did not care enough to save our environment.”

He was right, that generation didn’t have the green thing in its day.
Back then, they returned their milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store.
The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over.
So they really were recycled.

But they didn’t have the green thing back in that customer’s day.

In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks.

But she was right. They didn’t have the green thing in her day.

Back then, they washed the baby’s diapers because they didn’t have the throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts – wind and solar power really did dry the clothes.
Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that old lady is right, they didn’t have the green thing back in her day.

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house – not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not a screen the size of the state of Montana .In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn’t have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, they didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power.
They exercised by working so they didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she’s right, they didn’t have the green thing back then.

They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water.

They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But they didn’t have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances.
And they didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn’t it sad that the current generation laments how wasteful the old folks were just because they didn’t have the green thing back then?

We are happy to give credit when credit is due. Recently I purchased a new (for me) 4×4 so I can pursue heading country with my mates at the Nelson Four Wheel drive club. The old Pajero had been in the family for about 10 years, and although it had been a great vehicle for us, it was time for a change. We found a short wheel base Toyota Prado at one of our clients yards (good old Trade Me). Bit of a challenge really cause we have other clients in the industry, but at the end of the day, the others did not have what I was looking for at the time. We do believe in buying from clients when ever possible. To cut a long story short, the car radio in the truck was a Fusion. Now I can put a computer through its paces, but tuning car radios, video recorders and even the iron, I have a problem. So without a manual for the car radio, I was really challenged. Could not even work out how to change from am to fm – I guess you know what I mean.

Anyway, I found the Fusion website for NZ and went hunting for the manual. The truck is a 1996 and was imported around 2001, and I guess that is how old the radio is. So naturally no luck finding a manual to download. More google searches revealed no manual.

Ah, what the heck – nothing to loose, so I filled in the contact form at Fusion’s website, explaining that I had a radio without a manual, thinking may be they would put me on to a website or a business that I buy one off.

No reply for about 2 weeks (don’t you hate that) and suddenly out of the blue, I receive an email from Phil at Fusion with a .pdf of the manual attached. He explained that he had been on leave for a couple of weeks.

Well done Fusion – certainly much better than receiving the monthly email from Telecom, saying our invoice is ready for download, and the download did not work for at least 2 days. They did offer to send me a “free copy” if I rang an 0800 number – that’s novel

We have a client who was approached a few days ago by a company who calls themselves Front Page Google

They claim that they have secured the rights to the top 7 results in the Google location map which appears at the top of the serp in many service location searches – you know, the google map with listings on the side – he calls it “Balloon” map index

We were very surprised by this claim. We see it as part of our web services to protect our clients from rip offs and scams, so we decided to investigate some more.

Our client is very keen on the idea. They are getting their sites found well in the towns and smaller cities they are represented in, but competition is stiff for Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch – $475 + gst for a years guaranteed listing on the 1st page is a great deal.

Hang on – to our knowledge Google does not sell such a service (they sell “sponsored links” or adwords and there is no Guaranteed placement for that), so what is going on?

We made some calls and spoke to the original sales person who contacted our client – he told us, “I don’t know how it happens – it just happens – I am just selling it” and contacted me back with a phone number of the business owner

In the meantime we made a post in Google’s webmaster forum, asking about this – the result is that it has started a bit of a activity – click here to see the forum page

We think there is enough info there now for smart people to make up their own minds whether to deal with Front Page Google or not
