For a long time, putting the content "inside" a table was the thing to do. Then, it became the thing NOT to do. Now, we're led to believe that once again we can use "tables" to lay out our web pages. But this time, we can achieve our purposes using CSS, or cascading style sheets. Check out this page suggested by SitePoint: Layout Secret Weapon #1: The CSS Table Property. The examples shown make me want to explore the idea further! Why would you want to do that? Well, if you're like me, you collect way too much stuff. Eventually the computer clogs up, and the speed slows down. This is not good! The quick remedy is to remove those files you no longer need. And the most effective way to do that is to start with the largest files. How do you know what the largest files are, and where they are? That's where Gary's video comes in handy. In just 10 minutes he shows us how to find, select, and delete the most egregious of our large files. Most likely they are video files, or photos, or audio recordings. This video doesn't go in to how to move an entire iTunes Library, but it does give some very handy tips for how to clean up your Mac's hard drive.

My timing may seem ironic, since ScreenFlow 5 is already on the market. However, I'm just catching up with learning about the software I purchased a year ago! I made a few screencasts soon after purchase, but haven't had occasion to use it since. Recently I watched the Telestream promotional seminar on their latest version, and realized I needed to know more about the software. SO - I searched YouTube for more information, and lucked upon Jake the Geek Out Tech. He does a superb job of breaking down the task into bite-size viewing morsels, and I can now report - I ate the whole thing! For future reference, I offer this link to the series of videos which is embedded below: ScreenFlow 4 Tutorial.
I was doing the class assignment (compare VIMEO and YouTube channels), and I discovered the DSLR channel on VIMEO. Somehow the topic that most interests me was right at the top: travel photography. It looks like the show was shot in 2010, but I'm sure the principles remain the same. SO - I will definitely subscribe. For starters, here is the introductory show: http://vimeo.com/channels/photographyschool/90687500

And, as I've written recently, I'm in the market for a new camcorder. SO - I'm choosing the easy-way-to-go: I'm relying on Costco to select the top choices for me. Currently the local Costco has two camcorders on sale: the JVC GZ-R10 EVERIO and the Panasonic V550. Not knowing which one I'd prefer, I bought both. Now the chore is to select which one to keep, and which one to take back.

The EVERIO has a series of videos that are very enticing. The following playlist of videos begins with the 2014 introduction to the JVC QuadProof camcorders. Be careful though; the playlist has 87 videos! So, here goes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SE0DpKETP0&list=UUvy9t1QZYYP07h5e_FTvbYg&feature=share

I grew up on the mythology of Dad's farm in Kansas. We visited every summer, and I absolutely LOVED the times we spent there. I even momentarily owned a 1/3 of a 1/2 share of a farm after Dad died (before brother #2 asked us to sell our shares to the cousin who farmed it). SO, naturally when exploring videos on VIMEO's Documentaries channel, I chose to view this one, on Stocks Farm Foods. It's a great little video! The sound is good, the visuals are excellent, and it makes me want to visit its Facebook page(or the farm itself!). Film link: http://vimeo.com/channels/documentaryfilm/52457735

Stocks Farm - How We Started from Christopher Hughes on Vimeo
.

I also liked the fact that the filmmaker included this information about his film:

Shot on Stocks Farm in Suffolk and at Stoke Newington Farmers Market using a Canon 5D mk2 and a Canon 7D, sound was recorded using Sennheiser wireless Lav into a Zoom H4N

Why does that interest me? It's very simple: I too have a Zoom H4N! I love knowing that I have equipment equivalent to what's online. And, I have suggestions now for what next to explore - a Sennheiser wireless Lav!

Video Site Comparisons

This week's assignment in our class of "Video for the Web" is to compare the two video network's of VIMEO and YouTube. First I'll start with an exploration of the VIMEO Channels. I wasn't much interested in the Director's Picks, but I DID find something useful on Documentaries. This next clip is a trailer for a video called Janapar. It looks like a great film, so I guess the trailer works! They are stiff, uncomfortable, and don't fold neatly for traveling (though they DO have a strong case to protect them). SO - it's back to the store they go. I'll go to the Guitar Center and try some out. Probably the one in SF, though I did like the one in San Mateo.
I wish it weren't so difficult to pick just the right equipment! So many choices, so little time...

Camera Simulation

I'm going to see if I can embed this "Camera Simulator" on my blog. If so, it will allow us to simulate controlling a camera's settings. The problem for me is that the viewing is too big on my little laptop. SOURCE: http://camerasim.com/apps/camera-simulator/

Well, it doesn't work. By decreasing the frame size (from 550x570 to 400x425) does not show all of the image and controls. So how do I see the whole screen on an 11-inch netbook?!! VERY frustrating...

Markers in iMovie

MacMostVideo is one of my favorite YouTube "channels". This next video shows why. Host Gary takes a simple subject, "Using iMovie Markers" and explores it quickly and succinctly. Taking a few minutes of my time, I now have an understanding of a technique that may save me MANY moments later! Check it out: http://youtu.be/NhFoxdF8JFU
