Microsoft’s IIS web server market share is falling

For quite some time, IIS was gaining ground on Apache, but the tide changed in 2007. Since then Apache has recovered much of its previous dominance, reaching a 65% market share, while the market share for IIS has dwindled below 16%, less than half of what it used to be. That’s a pretty steep drop, bringing the IIS market share back to what it was in 1997, 14 years ago.

Jeff over at Research Labs shared some of the ways he’s using Dropbox when developing websites.

WebServer.com: So do you work out of Dropbox as your primary working folder?

Jeff: Yes my workstation at work consists of a Linux box and a Windows box setup over Synergy*. Then at home, I have another Linux box. I use dropbox for almost everything – very handy.

WS: Do you find you have any issues with slowness using this setup?

J: It’s actually very fast, especially when you are going over LAN between two computers – it’s an amazing product. So say I’m designing a site…I like to do everything in Linux, but you can’t beat Photoshop and it doesn’t run all that well on Wine*. So you open the file in Dropbox in Photoshop, do your edits, save and then it’s right there in the site files. I even point Apache to Dropbox folders for local dev.

WS: I see, cool…so you just make certain folders public on Dropbox?

J: Doesn’t even need to be public but you can…

* note – Synergy is a cool open-source project that lets you share one mouse & keyboard between multiple computers where each computer has it’s own display – and – Wine is free software that lets you run Windows applications on Linux, BSD, Solaris and Mac OS X.
