The amount and value of traffic you drive from social media back to your website depends greatly on the quality of your content.

Three ways to boost your website traffic with social media:

Get visual

It comes as no surprise that visual content receives more engagement than text posts. Posts containing videos, static images, infographics, GIFs, 360-degree photos and other forms of visual content, receive significantly higher engagement than those without.

The more engaging a post is, the more likely a viewer will engage with your brand and the call-to-action.

Tip: Create visually appealing content with a strong call-to-action. In other words, unlike the real World (offline World), in the on-line World your potential customers, visitors, fans are endless and they are only a click away from visiting your web site.

They don’t have to walk or drive to your web site or ecommerce store, they don’t have to pay anything to visit and all you have to do is put your web site in front of their mouse arrow.

Fortunately there are many ways to do this and this is what I will discuss in this post.

How NOT to promote your web site

I believe it will be more beneficial for you to discuss first how NOT to promote your web site, especially if you have been reading any of the ‘magic’ promotion formulas circulating the Internet. In a nutshell stay away from:

Link building schemes or networks
Buying traffic
Buying Facebook or twitter fans and followers
Guest posting just for links

It is important to realize that unless you have created a super duper web site (like Pinterest for example) success will not come overnight. It will take time and effort to build your readership or customer base and ‘quick fix’ methods do not provide any long term benefit.

What is the risk of using any of the above methods?

You will lose your money without having a real benefit
Excessive link building or guest posting my lead to penalties (by Google and lose all your search engine traffic and the potential to increase your traffic using valid means)
Buying Facebook likes may lead to penalties by Facebook.
You will not have a clear picture as to the real value of your web site and what it can naturally do in terms of traffic and visits.

So, if the above methods don’t work how can I increase the number of visitors coming to my web site? This is where the fun part begins…

There are many sources of traffic (besides search engine traffic) but many webmasters fail to utilize them correctly. Yes, search engine traffic is very important but it’s not the only way to promote your web site.

In fact if you use the other traffic sources effectively you are more likely to increase your search engine traffic as well.

Sources of traffic

In general the major sources of Internet traffic are:

Search engines (Google, Yahoo and Bing)
Social media networks (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, Tumblr, Stumbleupon, etc.)
Mobile media (smartphones, iPads, Android tablets etc., Windows 8 Tablets etc.)
Mobile Markets (Apple Store, Google Play, Amazon Store, Microsoft Windows Marketplace)

I have personally used most of the above sources and I will explain below how these can aid your SEO efforts, increase your web site’s exposure and gain more search engine traffic.

Search engines: There are three direct ways to increase your search engine traffic.

The first and most important step is to optimise your web site for search engines and second by obtaining high quality links from other web sites (either naturally or through careful guest posting).

The third method is to provide new content on a daily basis (or multiple times per day depending on the niche) so as to create more loyal visitors and give search engine crawlers one more reason to visit your web site.

Social Media: Social media is a great tool to spread the word when you launch your web site or new content (or products). In order for your social media campaigns to be successful you need to have a large user base (fans, followers, and friends) and you also need to have good content.

I will explain later (in a new post) how to grow your fan base on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Pinterest but for now take note that social media is a great tool to promote your web site.

Mobile Media: It is estimated by Gartner that by 2015 there will be one mobile device for every person on earth. Modern mobiles (smartphones) are connected to the Internet through Wi-Fi or direct Internet connection and people actually use them to search the Internet, login to Facebook, tweet etc.

So it is important that you optimise your web site for mobile and make it easy for users to find your brand while on the go.

Mobile Markets: Besides the growing use of mobiles during the last 5 years we have witness the birth and success of mobile markets. Apple and iPhone in particular have literally changed the mobile and tablet market and brought new opportunities for game developers and marketers.

Chrome App store: Google Chrome is the most popular browser and has millions of users searching the Internet on a daily basis. Chrome has a web store as well and as it turns out it is a great source of traffic. Read about my experience with the Chrome web store here and also what you can expect in terms of traffic gains.

Amazon Kindle: Amazon has been very successful with Kindle that took a step further and created their own operating system (based on Android) and market place (Amazon store) where you can download kindle books and apps for your Kindle device.

How can amazon help you increase your web site traffic? You can create a kindle book and publish it on Amazon (for free) or a kindle app and publish it for free on the Amazon App Store. Kindle users who want to find out more about your web site or products will visit your web version as well.

I have tested both of these methods and they are a good source of traffic but not as good as Apple Store and Google Play, nevertheless it is not something to be neglected.

Windows 8 App Store: Microsoft with the release of Windows 8 introduced a dedicated app store for Windows 8 devices called “Store”. In the store you can find metro style apps (this is how the apps running on Windows 8 are called) which you can install on your PC, phone or tablet.

I am currently in the process of creating a metro style app and submitting to the Store so I cannot give you numbers now but will get back in a few weeks for an update.

YouTube and Slideshare: People love videos and slideshows and in most cases they will prefer those media sources over reading plain text. Depending on your topic you can create your own Youtube channel or Slideshow and gain from an additional source of traffic.

Google+ Local Pages: One of the features of Google’s social network (Google+) is business pages and in particular Google+ local pages for business. Local pages have replaced Google Places back in May 2012 and it can be another source of traffic especially if your web site is targeting local traffic.

Paid Advertising: Advertising is a good way to put your products or brand in front of your customers. If you are running an online shop you can get new customers and if you are running a web site or blog you can get new subscribers and loyal visitors.

Google Adwords and Facebook ads are the two products I am using to either spread the word about a new web site or increase my fan page and followers (more on this in a new post).

RSS Feeds: RSS is not dead. A large number of people are still using RSS to stay informed or follow their favourite web sites. Web sites that managed to build a large number of RSS subscribers have fewer worries about SEO and other sources of traffic.

Even if are having a facebook page, twitter or Google+ page you still need to provide your readers (or customers) with an RSS feed as well. Most blogging platforms have this embedded so your only task is to ensure that a subscribe button is visible in your web site! (Register to my Rss)

Offline Sources: Never underestimate the power of offline sources and word of mouth. Promote your web site in your business cards, flyers, ads, company car and any other medium you use for building brand awareness.

Google is not the only source of Internet traffic

I have outlined all the methods above to help you understand that Google is not the only source of traffic in the Internet. It is one of the best sources of traffic both in terms of quality and quantity but you should never put all your eggs in one basket.

Optimizing your web site for Search engines (SEO) is a great way to boost your traffic from Google, Bing and Yahoo, having an active social media profile can get you visits from facebook, twitter and google+ and following the rest of the above methods will create more direct visits.

To sum it up, in order to increase your web site’s traffic you have to be open minded and ready to test which are the best sources of traffic for your web site without increasing your risks by putting all your efforts in a single method.

5 Subtle Ways to Increase Website Traffic

One of the biggest challenges we all face when starting with inbound marketing is building website traffic. You can have the best content in the world, but if nobody sees it, what’s the point?

Today, you’ll find a lot of content out there about how to increase website traffic. Some of it out-dated, some of it good, but not a lot of actionable advice.

The truth is, getting traffic isn’t as complicated as it seems at first, and there are a bunch of different ways to do it. You just need to spend enough time, and find the best tactics for you. As soon as you implement them with your website, you’ll likely see your site’s traffic grow in a few weeks.

So in this post, I’m going to show you my five favorite ways to generate traffic.

1. Create Irresistible Headlines

A compelling headline will define the success of your content. If you want people to read your content and click your social media links, a great headline is crucial.

To reach this goal, you need find the right keywords and the right length. To search for the right keywords, you could use SE Ranking, Google Keyword Planner or AnswerThePublic.

Think about some media outlets like BuzzFeed, PlayBuzz, Digg that use compelling headline templates. But make sure that your headline matches the article. If your content is just click-bait, it can backfire in the end.

Some great tips to make compelling headlines:

Try not to exceed 62 characters. Otherwise, it can reduce the conversion rate in the long run.
Use specific numbers and data in the headline.

Use emotional adjectives (awesome, free, incredible, fun, etc.).

Use a unique rationale (ideas, ways, reasons, tricks, etc.).

Ask a question.

To check how well your headlines are optimized, you can use headline analysis tools like CoSchedule’s Headline Analyzer or Sharethrough.

You can also use classic formulae as a good starting point for your headlines. Here are a few common ones:

2. Dominate with Quora

Quora gets around 200 million monthly visitors. It’s a massive website.

It’s also a real mine of targeted traffic. When you ask Google a specific question, you’ll likely see Quora answers because of their strong SEO.

Adam D’Angelo, the founder of Quora, explains: “Quora connects you to everything you want to know about. Quora aims to be the easiest place to write new content and share content from the web. We organize people and their interests so you can find, collect and share the information most valuable to you.” This makes it the perfect place to attract your specific audience.

It’s an excellent resource for keyword research as people discuss topics in everyday language, unfiltered by search engines.

Quick tip: Use a backlinks tool to explore top Quora pages in shares and links. Find the top pages that are generating the most shares and links, and reverse-engineer their keyword ideas.

Here’s a quick checklist to generate traffic with Quora:

Create a stunning Quora account and optimize your bio to stand out. Add a few words about yourself and your experience and add a link your website.
Add and find relevant categories that have lots of views and followers.
Search for relevant questions. Answer the questions and show that you know the subject well. To attract more views, the following things are important:
1. Use good grammar;
2. Insert videos or images;
3. Format answers well.
Publish strong answers. Here are a few tips how to write a reliable answer on Quora:
1. The first 3-4 lines must catch the reader’s attention. Make sure that they’re compelling.
2. Tell personal stories where you reveal and solve your problems.
3. Use good formatting and grammar.
4. Don’t forget to add relevant links to your site. The more relevant they are, the more traffic you will get.

Quora is a long-term strategy to generate traffic for your website. Take your time, and don’t overlook this platform.

3. Make catchy images

It’s well documented that people remember 10% of what they hear, 20% of what they read and 80% of what they see and do. Using visuals makes sense, and can do wonders for your traffic.

Eye-catching images help make your website visually appealing and keep readers on your site longer. Here is a great example from Capital.com:

A good logo or image can affect users both emotionally and cognitively. Especially if you combine a compelling headline with a sharp image, you will do the best to get more traffic and clicks.

And you don’t need to spend a lot of money on stock images. Often free photos can be the most powerful, found on websites like Unsplash.

4. Start guest blogging

Guest blogging is not only good for SEO, but also generates traffic and builds real connections with people in your industry. Try to publish 3-4 guest posts per month.

To do this, the outreach email is essential. Without a good first contact, you’re unlikely to build strong connections.

Here’s a quick guide to a good outreach email:

1) Introduce yourself and explain what you’ve learned from their blog, and what posts or ideas you liked the most.

2) Say “thank you” for the awesome content, and that you’re reaching out because you’re interested in guest posting. Share your pitches, show your last examples and tell them why these ideas will attract their audience’s attention.

3) You can use Buzzsumo and analyze the good examples out there. Take a look at the sample below using MarketingLand:

4) Once you’ve established contact, ask their requirements and what ideas they like to cover. Also, let him know that you’ll manage all the editing but it’ll be easy to make changes if necessary.

6) Write interesting content and use the right formatting (use short paragraphs and subtitles, include the “hook” at the beginning of your article, tell personal stories). Read your content aloud and fix any errors.

7) As soon as the post goes live, share it the right way on social media.

Guest posts are a great way to build backlinks to your site, and send traffic your way. But you need to write them well and try to build relationships that last.

5. Use internal linking

Internal linking is very important for website traffic. If you have awesome content or web pages, you should add links from one blog post to another to keep traffic flowing

Many websites forget about internal linking. This is a big mistake. These links are useful as they help readers navigate your website and define the architecture of your site.

But you must also try to avoid using too many links on one page. 40-50 internal links in each web page might be a happy medium.

A few tips to get the most out of internal linking:

Create good quality content you can link to.
Include the right anchor text.
Add links to relevant content, but not for the sake of linking.
Don’t overdo it with links. 5-10 internal links in one blog post is good.

Increase Your Website Traffic By Over 40%

Think about your own use of social media. Which posts are you most drawn to when you’re scrolling through Facebook or Instagram? If you’re like most people, it’s going to be the posts that have a visual element to them – images, memes, or videos. We’re going to focus on online video content, with some reports suggest that video will account for approximately 75 percent of ALL website traffic by 2020.

BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

When you start looking at the numbers, you begin to understand just how important a video marketing strategy and online video content is for your business.

According to Brightcove, a leading online video platform, social video generates 100% more shares than text or images combined.
100 million hours of video are watched every single day on Facebook and is growing rapidly.
Companies that use video see, on average, 41% more web traffic from search than those who don’t.
62% of Google searches include video.
Following on from the last point, Google loves Video! Websites with embedded videos tend to rank higher in Google searches due to users spending longer on the website by watching video content.
43% of people want to see more video content from marketers. (HubSpot, 2016)
Nearly two-thirds of consumers prefer video that lasts under 60 seconds. (Animoto, 2015)

While the numbers speak for themselves, it can be a little daunting trying to understand how your business can start reaping the benefits of online video content.

WHERE TO BEGIN…

Firstly, producing engaging video content that your customers will want to watch begins with a plan, so don’t neglect this critical step. Here are some questions you need to ask yourself before you press record on your camera or smartphone.

What is your goal? Is it to increase website conversions? Increase newsletter signups? Create buzz around a product or service? Build brand awareness? Your answer to the goal is how you will structure your videos, and each video will probably be unique to the goal attached to it.

Where will you use the video? Will it be embedded on your own website, on social media channels, or both? If it’s both (and it probably should be), you’ll want to tailor each video to each place you’re going to use it. Whilst a more corporate video will work fine on your site, you will probably want to have a more informal approach to sites such as Facebook and YouTube, etc.

How long will your videos be? Again, if it’s on your website, you can get away with a longer video time, but statistics prove that anything more than 60 seconds is too long on social media channels, and people will most likely not see the entire thing.

How often will you produce a video? There is no hard rule here, but like most things, consistency is key. Be realistic as well, producing a video can take a lot longer than expected. While you may think that you can produce a video a day, the likelihood of that happening is slim to none. Perhaps, in the beginning, shoot for one video a month, and then gradually increase it as you get a better feel for how long it’s going to take.

SO, YOU’VE MADE YOUR FIRST VIDEO… WHAT NOW?

You can have the greatest video in the world, and if no one knows about it or sees it, then you most likely won’t reach your goals.

A lot of the principals we apply to website SEO also applies to video. Keep your target audience in mind when coming up with the title of your video – ask yourself, will your average customer be drawn to click on it? Consider using relevant keywords in your video’s description as well, Google uses this when deciding if your video is relevant to someone’s search.

Lastly, and most importantly, make it easy for your viewers to share it with their friends and colleagues. Most of the major social and video platforms have the ability to share your video content quickly and easily, however, if your video is uploaded directly to your website, it may not be so easy. Utilise features like YouTube’s embed video function when adding your video to your website to ensure it can be shared easily.

32 INSANELY EASY WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR WEBSITE TRAFFIC (FOR FREE)

Today, I want to talk about ways to increase website traffic and get incredible visibility so all your hard work pays off and your blog gets found by more people.

Traffic is a biggie when it comes to blogging. The reason is that if you want people to get to know and love your brand, and ultimately, become customers, they first have to know your business exists.

It’s like you need a signpost to draw their attention to your business…and in the blogosphere, traffic = signpost.

Truth is, blogging is a lot of work. When you see the rewards come in droves of traffic, you want to roll up your sleeves and keep the momentum going, no?

On the flip side, when your blog traffic plateaus or even goes down, it can kill your enthusiasm for blogging altogether. We don’t want that to happen.

In this post, I’m sharing strategies that have helped me increase my blog traffic so that you can increase the traffic to your website too.

Before I continue, I should tell you the one thing I did that made my traffic take a nose dive.

Nothing.

Yep, I said it. I did nothing. Didn’t promote my posts after I published them. Just let them sit there. And my blog traffic dropped fast. I know this because my traffic was on the rise and I thought Good, I’m able to drive traffic to my website on autopilot now and I can ease-up on content promotion. Let’s just say lesson learned!

Ease up on content promotion = take down my signpost = no traffic. Which is pretty much the gist of it.

There’s a whole lot you can do to get blog traffic without spending thousands of dollars on advertising. You just need to understand the traffic sources available coupled with these techniques to double and triple your page views every month.

Let’s dig in.

32 Insanely Easy Ways to Increase Your Website Traffic (For Free)

1) Build your following

Decide which social media sites you want to lean on and work to build a following on those platforms. Social media will be a huge source of blog traffic if you approach it right. Spend some time actively engaging on those sites and sharing other people’s content as well as your own.

I cover more on creating an effective social media strategy in this post.

2) Social media profiles

Give your website a boost in traffic by making sure you include your URL on all your social media profiles. You’ll be amazed at how much traffic this can drive to your website.

3) Post on social media regularly

I know we’re all busy. Still, posting regularly and frequently on social media is going to make a huge difference in your ability to build a following. Of course, we can’t be on social media 24/7, and scheduling tools will automate your posts, so you always look active without being active. Make sense? My favorites are BoardBooster, SmarterQueue, and Buffer. There are many others that will suit your needs.

4) Post frequently + consistently

The more original content you share, the more blog traffic you can get from social media and search engines. Updating your blog regularly also helps readers get to know you and keeps them coming back for more.

5) Focus on one audience

Still wondering how to get traffic to your blog?

Pick a lane and stay in it.

On the superhighway of blogging, it can be tempting to switch gears and write about many different topics. The more you can focus on one topic for one specific person, the easier it will be to build your audience and attract your ideal customers.

Focusing on one topic will also help Google understand what your business is about, which means your posts will appear in search results. This one’s a biggie. You want that when people look for important terms related to your business, you’re up there on page #1.

I find that by focusing on just one topic, I spend more time doing what I should be doing to build my business, and less time getting distracted and checking my junk email.

6) Add social share buttons to your blog

Share buttons are what you see at the end of this post. Image share buttons are what you see when you hover over my blog post image. If you’re using WordPress, Shareaholic and SumoMe are two popular share button plugins.

While you’re at it, why not install the Click to Tweet plugin and add some tweetable quotes in your post? All of these are subtle ways to encourage people to share your post and increase your reach.

7) Use basic SEO

When people enter important terms into search engines, you want them to see your blog post. Learning some basic SEO will help you optimize your posts for search engines and improve your chances of being ranked higher.

8) Set aside time to promote your posts

I know it takes what seems like forever to write posts and if you’re like me, you’re tempted to call it a day once you hit publish.

Please, friend, don’t be like me! As I mentioned above, promoting your posts consistently is what’s going to help you get more eyes on them.

After pouring your heart into your content, you owe it to yourself to put it right in front of your audience.

I cover content promotion strategies in the next steps, but for now just know that in the same way you put aside time to write your posts, you need to set aside time to let the universe know about them. If you write your posts on Mondays and Thursdays, set aside time to promote them on Wednesdays.

Get Traffic to Your Website After You Hit Publish

Ok, now for the good stuff. The steps I’m listing here are a blog post checklist of things to do after you publish your posts to drive traffic to them.

Here are the steps I’m covering here:

First, share them on social media
Next, schedule additional shares, tweets, and posts
Then, add them to bookmarking and content-curation sites
Then, add to more blogging platforms
And finally, try paid promotions (they work)

Let’s walk through each of these.

I. FIRST, SHARE THEM ON SOCIAL MEDIA

The first thing to do once you publish your post is to share it to all your social media accounts.

As a rule of thumb, I have accounts on most platforms, but I am not active on all of them. That would be humanly impossible! Still, more social media accounts means more eyes are on your content, so it makes sense to create profiles on as many as possible.

9) Pinterest

Pinterest is my #1 traffic source of blog traffic. What many people don’t realize is that Pinterest is more than a social media platform. It is also a search engine, which is huge. If you want your content found, you need to make sure you share it here. Every time you publish a new post, the first thing you should do is pin it to Pinterest.

Because Pinterest can be a powerful source of traffic, let’s take a look at some things you can do to give your posts an extra boost:

Make sure you create a pinnable image, which is a fancy way of saying create a vertical blog post image that includes your brand elements (logo, icon, URL) and the title of your post. This pinnable image is what people will see in their feed and the image that will be pinned when people share your post from your website.

Add a description to your pin image so that when people share it, the description is there with it. The description should include the title of your blog post plus any other descriptive keywords that people might use to search for your pin. And of course, a call-to-action.

10) Twitter

Twitter has helped me increase website traffic, so I spend a lot of time on this platform. It’s my second biggest source of traffic, right behind Pinterest.

With Twitter, you can load-up on the tweets. Tweet a link to your post right after you publish it. Then use tools like Buffer or Hootsuite to schedule more tweets throughout the day and coming week. Make sure you include hashtags and change your tweet text, so you don’t look like you’re spamming!

11) Facebook

You may be using your personal profile for updates, or you may have a branded business page. Make sure you share content on Facebook and work to build your following so that your blog posts reach more people. Even though organic reach is a ghost of days gone by, Facebook is my #3 source of traffic, and I have only a handful of fans. There’s something to it.

12) Facebook Groups

Groups are Facebook’s secret sauce, so join some and share, share, share! Don’t be spammy and share only links to your blog. There’s an etiquette to Facebook groups and what makes them so great is that you’ve got real people sharing tips, asking questions, and helping each other. That’s how you want to approach groups. Join a few where you feel like you can contribute and learn. Then, if you see an opportunity to share a post or answer a question, leave a comment and include a link to a relevant post.

Always check the group rules. The group admin will provide guidelines and let you know when and if it’s okay to share promotional links.

13) Instagram

I confess, my brain has room to tackle one beast at a time, and I’ve been a Pinterest girl ’til now. I’m just getting started on Instagram and shared my first post there today. Woo! You’re probably way ahead of me on this one, so if you have any epic tips on how to build a blog audience on Instagram, please do share.

By the way, have you tried Planoly? I am in love with this Instagram scheduling tool. I had been dreading Instagram for the longest time because I couldn’t figure out a way to share images from my desktop instead of my phone. Then, along comes Planoly and solves that dilemna.

Watch out Instagram, here I come.

Update: I now have over 2K followers and am getting decent traffic from Instagram. Not more than Facebook, but I expect that as my followers increase, the traffic from Instagram will exceed my Facebook traffic. Fingers crossed!

14) Google+

Google+ is worth posting to – not only for social traffic – but because it is a Google site, which means being active on Google+ can help your posts rank higher in search results.

15) LinkedIn

If your audience is on LinkedIn and you have a decent following, you’ll want to share your posts there too. It’s not a huge traffic-driver for me, but hey, it all adds up.

16) LinkedIn Groups

LinkedIn has groups much like Facebook where you can share your posts. If your people are on LinkedIn, make sure you leverage groups.

Before their latest update, it was easy to share to groups – all you had to do was post your update, select Share to Groups, and choose groups. Now you have to go to each group’s page and share manually, which takes more work. Who said promoting a blog was easy?!

17) LinkedIn Pulse

I know many bloggers get decent blog traffic by re-posting on LinkedIn Pulse. A while back, Mike Alltongot 4,000 page views from one post alone (more than double his standard LinkedIn traffic at the time). I’m excited to try it, and think you should too!

II. NEXT, SCHEDULE YOUR POSTS

18) SmarterQueue

I’ve been using SmarterQueue for the past few months in a quest to find the perfect scheduling tool. I use it to share evergreen posts to Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. My organic traffic has noticeably increased since I started using it. The price is perfect at $20 a month (up to 4 social accounts).

19) Buffer

After I share my tweet in step #10, I’ll use Buffer to schedule about 15-20 more tweets during the first week to give them an initial spike in traffic.

Note: I was hoping to replace Buffer with SmarterQueue, but alas, not yet! I’m hangin’ in with Buffer because I share other people’s content via Feedly and IFTTT, and Buffer integrates seamlessly with both of these.

20) BoardBooster

Another magic-wand tool. I have easily doubled my website traffic with BoardBooster and highly recommend that you give it a try. Follow step #9 to pin your post. Then use BoardBooster to schedule additional pins.

III. SHARE TO BOOKMARKING SITES

Create accounts on these free web submission sites to get traffic to your content.

21) StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon is a content discovery site where people “stumble” different web pages to find things that interest them. Add your post here and include tags to make it easy for people to find it.

Be careful not to over-share your posts. Stumblers don’t like it when you only post from your website. Instead, stumble and “like” other pages, or manually add pages for others to stumble.

Let’s say you save a pin to one of your Pinterest boards. Grab the URL from the pin and stumble it. Try to go for at least a 10:1 ratio, meaning that for every ten posts you share from other websites, you share one of yours.

Note: StumbleUpon traffic may not be sticky. Because of the way the site is structured, bounce rates can be high. Make sure you capture people’s attention right away so that they read through your post.

22) Reddit

Bloggers beware! Reddit is one seriously intimidating platform. What I mean by this is that Redditors can smell spam a thousand miles away. Your account will quickly get banned if you don’t adhere to subreddit rules, so please be careful here. They can also be very direct (aka: school of hard knocks) with their comments. You need to be thick-skinned, but we’re fearless bloggers, so we got this…

Curious about subreddits? They’re just like Facebook groups. No biggie there.

The real question is Can Reddit really help boost blog traffic?

I’ve seen amazing blog traffic, and I’ve seen crickets. I’ve also been banned from some subreddits. So while I’m on the fence about it, the boost in blog traffic is noticeable and makes a difference. Reddit traffic tends to convert pretty well.

Just be careful with how you add links. Best practice is to approach subreddits the same way you approach Facebook groups. When you come across a post or a question where you can provide value, include a link to your post within your comment.

23) BizSugar

I’ve been using BizSugar for about three months and am just starting to see traffic from it. Like any other platform, the more you share, the more visible you become. That’s when the magic starts happening.

24) Hacker News

If you blog about entrepreneurship, Hacker News will get you traffic. Plus, it’s so easy to submit your posts. Just share the link and a title, and you’re done!

25) Growth Hackers

If your blog has anything to do with growth hacking, startups, or tech, Growth Hackers is another place you can share your posts.

26) Scoop.it

What can I say about Scoop.it? First, it integrates with Twitter, so if you have a following on Twitter, you can hit the ground running with a decent amount of followers on Scoop.it. To add content, either set up an RSS feed or add your posts manually, which is what I prefer to do. This way I can add specific tags to each one.

27) Flipboard

This is my new fav…don’t ask me why! It probably has to do with the design of the feed. I just like hanging out on Flipboard, which is how you should approach an platform. If you love a particular site, dig in.

You may have to give each one a solid try before you call it. I thought BizSugar was a waste of time until I started receiving comments and traffic. With any platform, make sure you hang in long enough to evaluate performance.

No doubt Flipboard is a keeper for me. I get decent blog traffic from it already and I love spending time on it. Win, win!

28) Inbound.org

Like HackerNews, people on Inbound are excited to help each other. If you blog about content marketing or marketing at all, this is a great place to share your posts.

IV. FORUMS + OTHER BLOGGING PLATFORMS

29) Quora

Quora is a powerful source of traffic and business. Quora is a Q+A forum where you can find and answer questions on just about any topic.

The trick on Quora is to provide detailed answers with a link to a relevant post, which will increase your website traffic. I’ve gotten traffic and a number of clients using this method.

30) Tumblr

I like the visual aspect of this platform. I didn’t pay much attention to it at first but have noticed more and more blog comments from Tumblr, which means it’s driving a decent amount of traffic.

31) Medium

Medium is a blogging platform, like WordPress or Blogger, where you share “stories”. On Medium, “stories” is code for “posts.” I haven’t tapped into how to use it to increase my website traffic yet, but I’m working on it!

Medium is designed to be a standalone blogging platform, so it’s best to republish your entire post. The downside is that you’re not directing readers to your website, so getting traffic has been tricky. I’ve been experimenting with including excerpts with a link back to my original post and will keep you posted on my results.

One thing that’s cool is that you can build a mailing list directly on Medium by adding a sign-up button via Rabbut. So far, I have zero Rabbut subscribers, so I have my work cut out for me.

32) Bloglovin’

Create an RSS feed and add your blog to Bloglovin’. This is another one I’m on the fence with, but it’s easy enough to add your feed, so what have you got to lose? Make sure your post images include an enticing description, which I’m sure you’re doing already for Pinterest, but just note that your featured image description is the one that will be added to Bloglovin’.

You may want to consider including only excerpts from your posts rather than full posts (in WordPress: Settings/Reading/Summary).

V. PAID PLATFORMS

Still want to know how to get more traffic? Time to pull out your wallet, friend.

If you start small, limit your daily budget, and test ad copy, images, and landing pages, you can drive a decent amount of traffic for less than $10 a day.

33) Facebook Ads

Yes, they’re worth it.

Before you start with Facebook ads, you need a rock-solid strategy. In other words, make sure the post you’re promoting includes a content upgrade or CTA to encourage sign-ups. Or, run your ad to a landing page with your freebie, challenge or email course . . . you get the gist.

If you’re a superhero, which of course you are, you’ll include an option to purchase something in your delivery sequence (say, a $7 mini-offer). Take that income and reinvest in your ads and you’ll wind up spending little to nothing. Now who’s a game-changer?

34) Pinterest Ads

Pinterest ads are my secret weapon for traffic. They give new pins a boost in visibility while you wait for organic repinning to take over as more people see your content. Once you have some repins, you can ease up on advertising. The best part: You can get great results with an ad spend of only $5 a day.

35) StumbleUpon Ads

Have you tried these yet? Let me know in the comments if so . . . I want to experiment with Stumble ads soon. For now, StumbleUpon’s high bounce rates are holding me back.

36) Reddit Ads

Redditors can be so tough. Still, the traffic you can get is no joke, so I recommend giving ads a try. Again, you don’t have to spend much to test them out. I’d wait until you have a course or paid offer to promote because I think that’s where the magic really happens.

With Reddit ads you can choose to block or show comments. I suggest showing them because Redditors are all about being social. When in Rome, right?

37) Quuu Promote

Quuu Promote is a new platform I discovered where people share each other’s posts to Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and LinkedIn. Think of it as a community of sharers.

I’ve used Quuu Promote to promote posts for $30 and have received a decent amount of blog traffic. Looks like their prices have recently increased to around $40 or $50 depending on your category but it’s still worth it, in my book.

How well does this traffic convert? Jury’s still out on this one . . . I will keep you posted.

You need more website traffic. If you run an online business, traffic is your lifeblood because it enables your business model to work and pay your bills. Therefore, you need to employee multiple strategies to bring new visitors to your site and keep old visitors engaged with your content.

Here are 48 ways to drive traffic to your website in 2018.

First Time User Acquisition

Create New Content

The best way to increase traffic to your website from organic traffic is to increase the number of pages on your website that can rank for your important keyword terms. Look at where you can add new category pages, new blog posts, or new pieces of attractive content (visuals, quizzes, etc) to target specific keywords.

Optimize Old Content

Because you are tracking your keyword rankings (you are, right? If you’re not, use SEMrush), you can find the keywords that you rank near the bottom of the first page and go add useful content to those pages to help them rank better. Google also prefers updated and new content over old stale content.

Launch New Products

A great way to attract new users to your company or website is to launch products that meet their needs. The great part is that you can often charge for these as well and make money will getting new users into your full conversion funnel.

Create Online Courses

The great thing about the Internet is that you can publish any type of content you want. By creating longer form content like courses that are targeted around both user needs and specific keyword phrases (don’t forget keyword research!), you can drive more traffic to your site and convert them into email addresses that you can then take down your funnel.

Plus, online course websites exist in plenty so you can put them on places like Lynda.com to further your reach.

Write Guest Posts

By using a site like SimilarWeb, you can find sites related to yours. If they have your audience, you can usually get content onto their site that helps them build traffic while at the same time getting access to their new audience.

Accept guest posts

Similarly, many sites want links for SEO purposes and access to your customers. If they’re not a direct competitor, let them guest post on your site! Then they are invested in your company and will promote the content that they’ve produced, which also gets you in front of their own audience. Double win!

Launch Infographics

If you have a designer in your company or can find one online, create useful graphics that tell a story and help people see your content in a new way. Do outreach for links, promote on Pinterest, etc.

Give Podcast Interviews

Podcasting is HUGE these days, and one of the best ways to grow a podcast audience is to invite influential people onto your podcast. Think about it like audio version guest posts. So, get one or two podcasts under your belt (or launch your own) then start targeting podcast producers to get onto their shows.

Social advertising

Social advertising on Facebook, Twitter, and other networkds is still relatively cheap today as compared to Adwords. Many of them also allow you to segment down by demographics or target by keywords so that you hit your ideal audience.

PPC

PPC is usually best used for conversion-oriented keywords, which is great because it gets you a new audience that is also ready to convert.

Create and Sell Courses

What better way to show your expertise and get people reading all of your content than to teach what you already know? If you have a craft, create a course to teach it then sell it on places like Udemy while simultaneously selling it on your site from a page targeted towards a high volume keyword for SEO.

Create Pinterest boards

Pinterest is a super strong domain and your Pinterest boards can rank very well. Do your typical keyword research for your website, then take some of those keywords and target them on Pinterest. A pro tip is to use your other online resources (website, Instagram, etc) to get them indexed faster and ranking better.

Promote pins on Pinterest

In this day and age, it’s not just enough to create content and expect it to rank and drive traffic. Rankings are influenced by engagement stronger than ever before, so use some budget to promote pins on Pinterest to your target audience.

Partnerships

Especially in B2B spaces, partnerships can be gold for customer acquisition. Build out referral programs with complementary companies to yours and try to funnel some of their traffic back to your site, either through website mentions or even their email marketing.

Link acquisition

This feels like an old school tactic, but it’s still true that the more links you have to your site, the better your site will rank. So acquire links to your site from content, from relevant resource pages on other sites, and from outreach that you do.

Promote content via Outbrain/Taboola

Content promotion is so cheap these days that you’d be silly not to do it. I know people with content sites making literally thousands of dollars a day all from promoted content.

Create satellite websites

If your main website is around one niche yet you operate in many niches, you can build out websites specifically targeted at those other niches and use them to funnel traffic to your other sites. You need to disclose that you own those other sites, but this is a great way to spread the organic reach.

Speed up your website

A fast site not only converts better, but on a big site you will also get more organic traffic because the search engines are able to crawl your site faster and find more content. Start with switching hosts then optimizing your code, all while making sure you are using aggressive caching and a content delivery network (CDN).

Do new keyword research

If you’re really struggling to increase traffic to your site, go do new keyword research to get new content ideas, then go back to point 1 above and create new content!

Target the longtail of keywords for SEO

If you don’t have a very strong website, you can target longer tail keywords (<50 searches a month) which are often much easier to rank for. From this you can start building up a base of content that you can then use to earn links and propel rankings for more competitive terms.

Target HackerNews/Reddit/relevant forums with content

If you can get content or a product to go hot on a site like Hacker News, Reddit, or ProductHunt you can literally get tens of thousands of visitors and often signups and sales. I (John) personally make over $70k from my site sitting on the first page of ProductHunt for a day, and I’ve seen Reddit drive tens of thousands of visits to sites.

Run competitions/giveaways

One of the best ways to build an email list and therefore a new audience is through giving away high value items and incentivizing your entrants to share as well in order to get more entries. I use the Kingsumo Giveaways plugin for this.

Speak at conferences

If you enjoy speaking, conferences can be a great way to get in front of a targeted audience. If you encourage them to tweet about it (put your Twitter handle on the bottom of every slide), you also get in front of their social media audience.

Advertise at conferences

While speaking is the best way to get in front of your audience at conferences, advertising is second best. You can leverage advertising for brand recognition, offer discounts to those at the conference, get links from people doing roundups, and more. It’s a big win especially if you can tie revenue directly back to your company.

Free swag at conferences

I have constantly been amazed at how well quality swag works for advertising your brand, and what better place to give away swag than at conferences to your customers? You’ll build brand recognition and good will.

Create content for Slideshare specifically

Slideshare is its own content social network. By creating content for Slideshare specifically and promoting it, you can also land on the popular content sections of their homepage which drive great traffic. Make sure you link back to your site from Slideshare too.

Create videos for YouTube

If you can create videos in a cost-effective manner, YouTube is a great distribution platform. It takes time to build the channel but has a huge audience if done well.

Run YouTube Ads

Can’t create videos, but there are videos on YouTube that your target audience watches? You can run YouTube videos.

Run webinars

Webinars can drive a new audience for you when you invite guests, or do advertising, that have an audience that they will promote your webinar to. Try to bring on guests who already have a large audience.

Use HARO to acquire contributors

Help A Reporter Out is a great way to find great sources for stories you are writing. While this won’t directly get you a new audience, by including their quotes and tagging them on social media you can access their audience.

Teach a class

Teach people how to do what you do, put your content on Slideshare, rinse, repeat.

Mentor a startup

Mentoring startups is a great way to build goodwill within your industry. Often you can also then get guest posts or leverage their name to get content elsewhere or to be quoted as an expert/source.

Sponsor Meetups

Meetup.com is one of the most popular websites online for organizing groups of people to get together. Many of them accept sponsors, who do things like give free meeting space or pay the bar tab. This can be a great way to get your company or product in front of your ideal target audience.

Do outreach to get included in email newsletters

Some companies do daily, weekly, or monthly newsletters that curate content from around their industry, and many of these have a lot of subscribers. If you have content that fits their audience, reach out to them and see if they’ll include your article in their next edition.

User Retention

Once you’ve attracted your customers to your site, whether to a piece of content via social or a conversion page via SEO, they’ll often leave your site and come back a few times before they actually convert. Sometimes they’re doing research, sometimes they get distracted by other sites, and sometimes they’re just not ready to buy or give you the information you so badly need from them to drive your business forward.

Here are 8 ways to get people back to your site

Collect email addresses and send consistent emails

One of the simplest things to do that most people don’t actually do is send consistent email marketing to their customers who have given their email address. Whether this is a weekly newsletter or a daily piece of content to teach and sell, this is the best way to keep your users engaged. The best part is that once you set it up once, your customers will all see that same content.

Guest post on similar sites

Similar to acquiring new users, guest posting on similar sites that likely have your audience and have read your site is a great way to remind them about your site/product as well. Pro move – advertise on these sites too (see below)

Do retargeting advertising

If you’re not doing retargeting and you operate a business online, you are literally leaving money on the table. With all the different display networks available, not to mention Facebook, you can easily target people who have come to your site but not purchased to come back and finish their conversion.

Advertise on similar sites

Once again using SimilarWeb or SEMrush, find the sites similar to yours who are not competitors and see if you can advertise there. Now their audience is yours.

Bid on competitor keywords

This one is slightly greyer on the ethical scale than many of the others, but Adwords allows you to bid on many competitor branded terms. If they’re searching for your competitor, they should also know about you.

Promote content on social

You might not know this, but your followers on social media (especially Facebook) don’t see all of the content you post. If you see a piece of content being successful and getting good exposure, either boost that post or promote it to your custom audiences that you’ve put together.

Let users subscribe to content

Some CMSs, like WordPress, will let people subscribe to replies to their comments that they leave on your content. You can also use a myriad of tools (like SumoMe) to capture email addresses to which you can send content when it publishes.

Email users when something happens onsite

If you’ve had someone sign up to your product, email them when something happens (a product goes out of stock or comes in stock, metrics change, etc) to get them back to engage with your product again.

Email users who abandon their shopping cart

If you run an ecommerce site, email them when they’ve left something that they wanted to buy.

Affiliates

If you run a site that has products or things directly for sale, you could consider an affiliate program. While affiliate programs take management, they are also a great way to get others to talk about your products for free and you only pay if they buy something.

Partners

If you’re a B2B company, partnerships can be a great way to drive relevant traffic that is ready to convert to your site. This has been a major way Credo has grown. Influencers

2017 was the year of influencer marketing, and this will only continue into 2018. Get influencers to post about your products, blog on your site and share it, or interview them and provide it for free to your users.
