Wordfence is a free security plugin for WordPress. Security “plugins” for WordPress are often highly criticized as many may give a false sense of security or simply just automate creating .htaccess files – sometimes recklessly. However, Wordfence stands clear apart and above other plugins as it offers malware detection, checks for out-of-date plugins or themes, provides firewall throttling or blocking rules, has the ability to restore compromised or altered WordPress theme or plugin files, and offers an optional paid vulnerability scan from their data center. Those are just a few of the highlights which are to be touched upon below. Let’s dive in.

The Wordfence Scan

Wordfence functionality is based around a security scan the plugin performs. Out of the box, the plugin is ready to use and scan. Simply install and click Scan. The Wordfence Scan checks for the following issues:

Remote scan of public facing site [paid feature]

Comparing core WordPress files against originals in repository

Comparing open source themes against WordPress.org originals

Comparing plugins against WordPress.org originals

Scanning for known malware files

Scanning file contents for infections and vulnerabilities

Scanning files for URLs in Google’s Safe Browsing List

Scanning posts for URL’s in Google’s Safe Browsing List

Scanning comments for URL’s in Google’s Safe Browsing List

Scanning for weak passwords

Scanning DNS for unauthorized changes

Scanning to check available disk space

Scanning for old themes, plugins and core files

Restore Modified or Possibly Compromised Plugin or Theme Files

The biggest feature of Wordfence is that it analyzes all core WordPress files, theme files, and plugin files for changes against the current available versions of those components. Users can click to repair/restore the original version of the file, view changes on screen, or ignore the finding. To avoid a customized theme from being flagged in this check, one should make use of WordPress child themes for theme changes.

Wordfence performs this by checking MD5 and SHA hashes of the installed files in a WordPress installation against a database of hashes of original files. The hashes are sent securely via 443 SSL to the Wordfence servers. This provides a quick and simple way to compare if files are different or have been modified for any reason, such as from malware or compromise.

Live Traffic

Wordfence offers an optional Live Traffic view. This runs via JavaScript that records its own analytics separate from any other logging. Information such as browser agent, IP address, geo-location, and the ability to click ‘block’ beside the IP makes this an invaluable feature. The only feature lacking is any ability to dump or export all of the traffic data to a CSV or XML file, which would be valuable.

Blocked IPs

Antoher feature in Wordfence is the ability to block an IP address from access to the WordPress site. Specific IP addresses can also be blocked from accessing the WordPress Login page to add security around the login area.

Note that Firewall and IP Blocking only prevent access to the WordPress site itself. This is not a replacement for a full operating system firewall, nor does it interact with iptables or other operating system level restrictions. Frankly, a WordPress plugin controlling an operating system firewall would probably be a bad idea. An example screen that is shown to a blocked IP is below.

Country Blocking

Scheduled Scanning

Two paid features are blocking entire geographical regions by geo-location as well as scheduled scanning. These add convenience but are not required for the full plugin functionality.

Wordfence Options

Once single Options page provides the entire configuration for Wordfence. Making changes here is completely optional, though users who want to make more changes under the hood will want to inspect this area.

Starting at the top, a drop down menu offers a quick security-hardening setting. In case the site is under attack or being the focus of abuse, the security level can be changed quickly here to various levels. Otherwise, each individual option can be set as shown below.

Advanced Options

Alerts

Various email alerts are possible from email alert when a user logs into the site, to emails about critical security problems found.

Live Traffic View

Here the Live Traffic View can be disabled if desired. I mention this as the only information leakage from the Wordfence plugin is the Live Traffic View javascript which is visible in the HTML source. (See screenshot below). It is still possible to block IP addresses with Live Traffic View disabled, though of course no fancy Live Traffic View would be available to see live traffic.

Scans to Include

In the Scans to Include section, it is best to enable two options that are not on by default to scan themes and plugins for changes. Often malware or another compromise will alter or change files on the server. These options let Wordfence check that all files in themes and plugins are of their originals and not compromised.

- Scan theme files against repository versions for changes

- Scan plugin files against repository versions for changes

Firewall Rules

Wordfence offers its own firewall to either throttle or block IP addresses based on various actions.

For instance, to avoid situations where the site may be flooded or DoS’d, enable the feature to throttle or block a connection after a large number of requests (32 per second). As previously mentioned, these rules only restrict access to the WordPress site itself, and have no effect on the operating system level Firewall.

Login Security Options

To add additional security around the WordPress login, Wordfence offers many good features. After X number of bad login attempts, the IP can be blocked. The more fascinating feature offered here is Don’t let WordPress reveal valid users in login errors. Many WordPress hacks based around the login page are from information leakage where WordPress confirms valid usernames at the login page.

While these are great features to add security around the login, the best security is to prevent access to the WordPress login page entirely by Apache server authentication if at all possible.

Other Options

In the final section Other Options, specify a home or work IP address in the whitelist so Wordfence does not block or limit valid connections from valid WordPress administrators.

If the option to Participate in the Wordfence Security Network is selected, IP addresses that have violated login or firewall rules are sent to Wordfence to help in a global block list for other users. If desired, disable this option for privacy reasons.

Effectiveness and Conclusions

Wordfence offers extremely easy deployment of added security layers to WordPress. The highly customized options make Wordfence a good choice for one who perhaps is not interested in the Firewall, but only want to audit code changes. The Firewall can be disabled, and only code changes can be scanned, as one example. Wordfence has a large user community on their forums ( http://www.wordfence.com/forums ) and offers support for paid users. A negative often spoken of security plugins is that they often only automate or change what one could change for themselves anyway. But here Wordfence’s code auditing, firewall with throttling options, malware detection, and other features are a bit far from what one could do themselves or at least not without quite a bit of effort. Wordfence operates in large part with its cloud servers located in Seattle, Washington who play a large part in the code auditing and IP block lists correlation, as well as perform scanning for paid users. Take a look at the article WordPress security written by the InfoSec Institute (an IT security training company) for a more detailed look into how you can keep your WordPress site secure.

Of all of the various security plugins for WordPress, Wordfence provides unique layered security options with an extremely easy-to-use interface. Check it out at http://www.wordfence.com.

We human beings tend to ignore the warning signs and keep procrastinating the issues that must be dealt with on immediate basis. Be it the case of health, job, household tasks or any other job; majority of the people are in habit of doing a particular task only when itbecomes the dire need of the hour. Talk about health, I read a wonderful quote by Dalai Lama-Man sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. How true is it!

Today, each one of us is having a time crunch because we have to meet the deadlines, survive in the world where there is a cut-throat competition and earn the living. Who suffers the most when we ignore the warning signs our body gives? Obviously WE!

Till the time we go to the doctor and see ourselves waiting in the queue outside the clinic; we actually don’t care much about the warning signs our body gives. Our body is smarter than we consider it to be. Before it gets late it actually keeps giving us the signals that extra care is needed or something needs to be checked but 1we all know that we actually ignore giving miscelleneous reasons.

I am sure you all can recal the time our family memers asked us to go to the doctor and get checked. Rememeber the answer? Ofcourse itwas-

“Main Theek Hun! zayada kuch hoga toh chale jayenge doctor ke pass.”

Correct me if I am wrong!

Coming to the topic of the day. Each day my cousin curses herself for ignoring the dental problem eversince she first spent the sleepless night because of toothache. She kept ignoring the signs her bleeding gums and severe toothaches were giving. Not that she never visited the dentist. She certainally visited them quite often especially when the tooache went little too severe that she had to spend many sleepless nights. What next, the denstist used to prescribe some medicine for pain releiving and asked her to come for the regular dental treatment. But next visit was procrastinated till the next time (yes, it was when she suffered from unbearable toothache and saw bleeding gums).

This ignorance went on for years till finally one day the dentist told her that there was no other option than to remove her teeth because one bad tooth spoiled her other teeth too just for one reason that she kept ignoring the signs her dental problems like toothache and bleeding gums was giving. Yes, you heard it right its teeth not tooth. Removal of teeth means she will have to get the teeth implant treatment which not just pricks your gums but also pricks your pockets.

At such a young age she will have to undergo such a painful dental treatment and she regrets ignoring the signs her dental issues were giving. Today, she wishes to rewind the clock and bring back the time. She promises to take care of her teeth but alas it’s not possible and is too late!

Well guys, not only the dental issues I sincerely request you to pay attention to the signs your body and your life is giving. Don’t simply ignore them because if they are not paid attention at the initial stages or I must say at the RIGHT TIME it will actually be toolate and you will be left with just one feeling that’s-REGRET.

Each time I watch the advertisement of Bleeding Gums….Colgate Pro-Gum Health I promise myself to take care of my teeth.

So, Moral of the story is-Don’t ignore the warning signs your bleeding gums are giving. Here, I remember a wonderful quote on Procrastination :

‘Procrastination is like a credit card; it’s a lot of fun until you get the bill’. Pay attention now and Keep Smiling!

Laptops are the lifeline of many people. They can shut the lid, pack it away in their case and take it with them. They can then work on the train, [...]

Laptops are the lifeline of many people. They can shut the lid, pack it away in their case and take it with them. They can then work on the train, surf the net on the bus or just take it on holiday to keep in touch on social media networking sites. How many people truly go ‘on holiday’? Could you go a whole week without checking your emails or updating your status?

However the one big problem with laptops, including some of the 21st century models, is battery life. They are considered to be fairly mediocre; in other words, they do not last very long or long enough to be able to do anything of a large project size.
A laptop that has been through a full charge (that is, from empty to full battery charge), with its laptop charger unplugged, should last between 1 to 6 hours on an average battery.

This will be dependent on a number of things:

Battery capacity (technically known as its mAH)

What the laptop is being used for

How old the battery is

Overall, the battery in a laptop should last between 2 and four years or, looking at it another way, around a 1,000 full charges with your laptop charger.

With the capapcity and efficiency of your laptop battery decreasing over time, any laptop owner who depends on their laptop as their main source of computing, need to bear in mind the need for an effective laptop charger.

The problem is, a mains plug is not always available to plug in your laptop charger, allowing your laptop to burst back in to life.
Have you thought about a solar powered laptop charger?

Solar power is nothing new. Houses and businesses are slowly beginning to tap into solar power as an efficient and reliable source of energy. With non-renewable energy becoming ever-expensive, solar powered laptop chargers are also a great way of giving your laptop battery an extra burst of power.

Laptop charger were first seen around 2008, with a 15watt panel providing on average enough electricity to run a ‘standard’ laptop for 2 to 4 hours. Of course, as with mains laptop chargers laptop can be used whilst still drawing power from solar laptop chargers.

Check compatibility before you buy

Solar powered laptop chargers sound a great idea but before you invest your money, check that the charger is compatible with your laptop.

There are various designs on the market. One example is a foldable solar panel, with accompanying battery to store energy collected from the sun. Depending on the strength on sunlight, various manufacturers report that such solar panels can charge a battery pack from empty to full within 5 to 10 hours.

One of the great features of foldable solar panels is how light and compact the whole kit is; some solar power laptop charger kits weight 6.5lbs and will only take up a small amount of space in your bag or luggage.

Laptop chargers on the move are a must if you are thinking of taking and working on your laptop for any length of time. Until laptop battery life is improved, solar powered laptop chargers are a great way of providing energy for your laptop battery on the move.

Power supply units (PSUs) for use with a desk top PC come in three formats, each with their own advantages;

Modular power supply unit

A modular power supply in a nutshell comes with a detachable cable system. For most people, this would mean very little! But, if you enjoy building and creating your own PC then a modular power supply is an ideal solution and is down to one thing – the cables.

PCs use an inordinate amount of cables. They are can be supplied too long and make cable management a nightmare. A modular power supply unit has a complete modular ‘interface’ in other words the cables are NOT attached to the unit, but do come supplied as the manufacturers believe that there is very little chance that everyone will use every single cable that could be attached to this powerful little unit. The cables supplied are also shorter, meaning that cable management is much easier within the casing unit.
These modular power supply units tend to be more expensive and have a high wattage value to them. If you building a ‘mega’ computer, with several hard drives then a modular power supply unit is the way forward.

Benefits of a modular PSU are numerous:

No unused cables need to remain plugged in making it far more practical and aesthetically pleasing

Removal cables means that the likelihood of damage to computer components is lessened

Less cable clutter means improved airflow

Should have universal voltage input meaning it should be transferrable across countries

Latest modular power supply units have a remote control feature

Semi modular PSU

These power supply unit are an effective compromise between a completely modular power supply unit and a non-modular unit (more later). A semi-modular unit comes with some cables attached – these cables are the essential cables that everyone would use in powering their PC. The other ‘add on’ cables are supplied but you only need to attach them if you intend using them.
This type of semi-modular power supply are unique and will therefore only fit into certain brand of cases (check with the PSU manufacturer) but they offer great value for money and improved cable management.

Non-modular power supply units

These are the original power supply units that we have come to associate with PCs in their early days. On the outside, the PC tower would look just like any other but, look around the back and you will find a cable nest of several power supply wires! Cable management in this sense is very difficult but for some PC users who do not need a large power supply etc. then a non-modular PSU fulfils their need.

Clutter is the main disadvantage of this type of unit, and you will need a large case to house all the cables. However, they tend to be cheaper to purchase than the other two types of PSUs.

If you are thinking of replacing your computer power supply unit, then a modular power supply unit may be the way forward!

The technicalities

Technically, what we refer to as a phone charger is more of a power adapter that provide a power source to charge to circuitry in the mobile phone. They have been notoriously diverse with a wide variety of styles on the DC connector pin as well as in voltage – remember your phone running out of charge at work, and desperately looking for someone who had the same brand and make of phone as yourself so that you can restore power to it?

How a mobile phone charger works

Mobile phones and many other mobile devices rely on rechargeable batteries as their primary source of power. But, we need to understand the basics of batteries and battery charging to fully understand how our mobile phones charge.

Battery charging

All batteries and chargers function on the basic principle of converting stored chemical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. When you connect a battery to an electronic device, the chemical energy stored in the battery is converted into electrical energy as a result of a reaction within the battery. When we connect our mobile to the phone charger, this reaction within the battery is reversed and electrical energy is converted back into chemical energy stored in the battery.

Lithium-ion batteries

Most mobile phones use rechargeable batteries that house lithium-ion chemistry as a source of power. Inside this type of battery, there is a cathode (a negatively charged electrode) comprised of lithium metal oxide and an anode (a positively charged electrode) made up of carbon; they are separated by an electrolyte conductor. When a mobile phone powered by a lithium-ion battery is connected to the mains supply (via a mobile phone charger), the lithium ions in the battery flow FROM the cathode TO the anode.

When the phone is being used and disconnected from the mobile phone charger, the lithium ions flow in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION.

Different types of chargers

There are some different types of mobile phone chargers available but all of which use the same principle in charging the mobile phone battery. Standard wall mobile phone chargers use the electrical energy produced to charge the battery. Mobile phone car chargers use the electrical energy from the car’s battery to charge the battery and USB chargers use the electrical energy from the laptop or desktop PC to charge the battery.
Charging in stages

The first stage of charging sees the battery’s voltage increase quickly and significantly due to the constant electrical current.

Stage two is when this voltage peaks and the current from the charger begins to decrease.

Stage three is when the battery is fully charge and the charger cuts the current off from the mobile phone

Stage 4 is stand-by mode – in other words, the charger if it stays connected will supply a top up charge if and when the phone is used and the voltage of the battery drops below a certain level.

Mobile phone chargers are moving on at a great pace. Smart phones could soon be charged in your car through a wireless phone charging system (source: BBC website 20/12/12). Car manufacturer Toyota is looking to introduce a new charging system known as Qi (pronounced “chee”) in to one of its models. The smart phone would simply sit on a special mat and through magnetic induction, would charge the battery in your mobile phone. This method of phone charging could become main stream in new cars within months!

Your mobile device, be it a smartphone or a tablet, is just as useful as the kind of internet it connects to. This is true because you will need some form of internet connection to perform most tasks on these devices. This means picking the right mobile internet provider is just as important as selecting the type of device to purchase.

Here are a few tips you can use to help you make an informed decision when choosing a mobile internet service provider.

Major Usage of the Internet Connection

One of the first things you should do is to determine your monthly average data usage. You can gauge this by evaluating how often you use the internet and on which applications. Media downloads are known to consume heavy amounts of data but light applications like web browsing consumes relatively low volume of data. Most mobile intern users rarely consume more than 300mb of data per month, so a data contract of 500mb is reasonable. If you are a heavy user and you do not mind paying a premium price for your internet, you can opt for the unlimited packages.

Internet Speeds

This is one of the issues that you should be very careful with when comparing internet service providers. Providers have been known to be very cunning and cagey with their advertisements for speeds. In most cases, they advertise inflated speeds that users rarely get when using their internet. You should be aware that most advertised speeds can only be realized under optimal circumstances, a situation you will rarely have. To avoid being hoodwinked, you can use user reviews and speed tests to get the real internet speeds.

Network Coverage

You should know the exact areas serviced by these companies before signing up for these services. If you are a frequent traveler, then you will be better served with a firm whose internet coverage will be able to meet your demands. Luckily, most providers have placed information on their coverage areas on their websites. Use this information to ensure that you weed out providers who do not service your areas on interest.

Customer Service

It is a shame that many mobile internet providers are not known for their stellar customer service. You should research wide to ensure that your preferred company will be of help if and when you do need its support services. This is especially important if you are planning to sign up for long-term contracts. You should not end up with a provider that takes weeks to get something done when need arises.

Shop Around and Scrutinize the Small Print

Many internet packages are available in the market, so you should not sign up for the first one that looks good. You might sign up for a supposedly good contract only to realize later on that there is a better deal. In addition, you should also scrutinize the terms and conditions of these companies. Some deals may look great on their face values but their practical values may easily be eroded by the terms and conditions.

Although price is one of the factors you can use in your selection process, you should not give it undue weight at the expense of the other factors. Providers of internet for mobile devices are many, so you should not suffer in silence if you have a bad contract. Just use the information above to weed out the unreliable firms before selecting a package.

There are a lot of things you can do with your iPad, but now you can also run your business from it as well. You may be wondering what you need in order to run your business from your iPad or how that works when you want to run your business remotely. The good news is that it’s not as hard as you may think.

IPad POS Systems are a great way to run the financial part of your business when you want to do remote work or you just want to have everything all in one place. There are apps that allow you to keep track of your daily transactions as well as to run credit cards for you at the same time.

These are normally available from merchant services such as PayPal or even your local banking system. These iPad POS Systems allow you to do anything you need to in collecting your money and processing the transaction. They can also give you a printout at the end of each day, week or month. This depends on how you set it up and how you want it to work for you.

IPad POS Systems work well with other apps you may have for your business already on your iPad. These other apps may help your accounting in order or help you to create invoices and expense sheets that are best for your business needs. It’s a great thing if you can have everything all together and not have to look for other ways to collect your money and keep track of it. If you find the right iPad POS System, you may be able to integrate all of the features of running a business in one place on your iPad or through one App or program. These are not hard to find and a simple search will help you see all the different options. Some are even free.

There is a lot of ways to run a business, but with the business world changing rapidly, you may want to think about how an iPad POS System can really help you get the advantage you need with your business. You can get one of these for almost nothing and possibly not even have to worry about how you were going to run credit cards at the same time with the right one. You just have to be willing to look at your options and know what it is you need so you can get the right one for you and your business.

In 2012, there was an excellent app created in just about every imaginable category – e.g., athletics, music, finances. Even as the pool of mobile applications continues to grow, there seems to be no shortage of innovation among programmers. Indeed, it seems as if programmers are always dreaming up new ways for you to use your cell phone.

Here, then, are some of the best apps to hit the market this year. With internet service from HughesNet, or another provider, you can have access to all of them!

Nike Running, free

This year was the first that Android users were able to take advantage of Nike’s infamous running application, and iPhone users were greatly impressed by this year’s updates. The app now makes use of a phone’s GPS function, no longer requiring any sensors to track your running route. For users of a competitive nature, the app compares times and distances with that of one’s Facebook friends.

Camera Awesome, free

There are quite a few camera apps and add-ons out there, but this one blows them out of the water. This new app offers a number of photo filter and editing options, and allows users to share photos via website SmugMug. It makes a great alternative for those who’ve recently become wary of Instagram.

Echoer, free

This app lets you skim the social media updates pertaining to local businesses in your local vicinity. Download it and you may learn something new about the bars and coffee shops in your neighborhood. More than merely reading status updates back to you, Echoer highlights the “loudest” ones, therefore letting you in on the most relevant local opinions.

WhoSampled, $2.99

Music geeks everywhere will rejoice as they download this app, perhaps even as they wonder why no one ever thought of it before. WhoSampled gives you a better understanding of which of your songs have been sampled or from whence they were sampled. It may interest you to know which of your favorite musicians are innovators and which tend to borrow their brightest ideas.

Back in Black, $2.99

There’s no shortage of budget-keeping apps, but this one redefines them all with its simplicity. Users need only set a budget, and then they can keep track of spending habits as they go. Those who are merely curious can see how much they’ve been spending each month, and where they’ve been spending it. Budget-keepers who require stricter rules can set savings goals over a period of time.

Angry Birds Star Wars, $.99

You’d think the general public would tire of launching birds at pigs to exact revenge, but Rovio continues to find ways to make this an interesting pastime. As the newest edition to the brand, Angry Birds Star Wars puts an entirely new spin on the epic battle between bird and pig.

Bejewled, $.99

To hear PopCap Games tell it, this app is the world’s most popular puzzle game. It certainly exploded in 2012, earning its popularity with rows of exploding gems. We have to admit that once you’ve gotten the hang of it, it’s hard to put stop playing.
