If you’re lucky, you know only one.

They are the attendees of tech parties, the “Twitter consultants,” the armchair generals of the Internet, and their numbers grow by the day. Yet most of them couldn’t distinguish a line of code from a badly punctuated haiku.

What’s to be done with the social media experts? Accept that their blathering may contain some wisdom? Or require technical exams for all Twitter users with more than 1,000 followers? You decide! And make the NMDs among us take our “technical” quiz.

There is always grave danger when amateurs turn overnight into experts. This sub-professional clown town is where B movies and Soulja Boy come from. It’s also the birthplace of every blowhard who tells you you’re “doing it wrong” without any technical knowledge or original thought to back it up.

Sometimes, it’s not such a bad thing – in fact, there are a great many non-technical social media folks who are doing a great job of creating quality content and helping brands get themselved situated on the Web. But most of the people I can think of who fit this description have been doing their thing for so long that they’ve had to pick up a few technical tidbits along the way to ensure their continued success and to ensure they weren’t sounding like idiots.

However, I hold the strong opinion that if you’re working in technology – even as a PR flak or social media consultant – you should be able to understand some of the terms, concepts and people that make your business possible. Otherwise, you risk your own reputation by taking the chance that you’re scarily wrong or laughably vague, and you risk gumming up the works for your clients by not knowing how to communicate with their audience, many of whom are very technical folk.

Ultimately, taking the time and effort to understand the technology you use is simply a matter of taking pride in your work, just like the barista who knows all the ins and outs of the perfectly pulled free-trade organic espresso or the skilled sommelier who, though he may not make the wine himself, knows everything about who did and where and how.

February search results show that Bing continues to grow as Yahoo sags.

Comscore reported that usage of Bing went up from 11.3% in January to 11.5% in February, while Yahoos stats during the same period dropped to 16.8% from 17%. Googles stats remained essentially unchanged.

The most impressive figures for Bing, however, come from a report written by Morgan Stanley analyst Imran Khan. Khan stated that Microsofts year on year search growth for the month of February was 55.4%, up from Januarys similarly impressive 49% year on year search growth. In the same period, Yahoos seen year on year search volume shrink 9.8% in February and 8.9% in January.

So what does this mean for the search market? It means that Bing has continued to grow, and more importantly, that Bings growth appears to be accelerating.

This appears to be due to a combination of factors. First, Bing is apparently luring considerable numbers of users away from Yahoo. This suggests that Bings extensive marketing efforts have succeeded to some extent.

Second, Googles growth appears to be slowing down a little bit. Year on Year total searches for January and February increased by 12.4% and 10.4% respectively. Googles Year on Year search growth for these months barely outpaced total search growth, coming in at 16.7% and 14.3% respectively.

It appears that the search market is consolidating somewhat. Bings market share is inching upwards, at the expense of everyone else except Google. When Yahoo essentially concedes their search engine to Bing, it will be interesting to see if Bing is able to take a bite out of Google

The store comes out of the desire for increased functionality among Google Apps users, and the wish of developers to reach the millions of businesses that depend on Google Apps every day.

There have been companies developing for Google Apps for some time, such as SocialWok. However, the process has always been difficult, and overly complex for both developers and users alike. The new App store will change that by creating a central location for applications, a central management areas, universal navigation, data security, and simple sign in.

Google is taking Apps and bringing the masses in to make it harder, faster, better, and simpler.

Developers will be able to use tools such as OpenID, and OAuth, meaning that users will be given use scenarios that they are familiar with, and that developers will have a very simple time developing for the new app store as it uses tools that they are already familiar with.

Google claims that its 2+ million Apps using businesses with 25 million users and over 1000 resellers will be developer accessable with some 12 integration points. Open the floodgates, and let the developers in.

Not coming with launch, but by mid-2010 Google will offer billing for the developers. Developers will use Google billing APIs, but Google itself will handle the billing according to the rules that the developers set in terms of price and time duration. Google will not be doing that for free, the company will take a 20% cut of those revenues.

Who is working with Google for the launch to bring in apps right away? More than 50 companies, take a look:

While it may seem greedy on the surface for Google take such a large cut, but recall that Apple takes 30% in the iPhone app store, and that higher percentages are the norm in the advertising business. 20% for Google to handle the headache of billing and providing such massive market access is quite fair.

Of course what we have yet to discuss is the impact that will have on the average Google Apps user. This means more, better applications with simpler controls, and simpler billing. This will create a large, serious cottage industry around Google Apps the likes of which we do not see now.

And of course, this will make the cloud one step more powerful against desktopapplications that used to reign supreme. Desktop might still rule for now, but how many more blows like this can it withstand?

To keep up with the growth of cloud computing and virtualization, networks keep evolving. But unlike Twitter’s Trending Topics, IT budgets don’t scale up. In fact one of the major initiatives in many IT shops is creatively reduce their own expense.

To get to a scalable cloud infrastructure where costs are contained, it sounds like the network industry is going to see a time where a “Linux” arrives on the scene. An open source alternative to building networks may disrupt the networking landscape and give network admins an open source network operating system.

Virtualization: It’s in the Network Too

Distributing workload across machines, storage, and environments has required networks to be smarter than ever. Now, the network needs to be intelligent enough to not only route traffic both a bridge and a toll-gate, but to also provision and de-provision all aspects of the environment at a moments notice.

Providers like Rackspace are in the business of using the network to optimize the performance of the entire data center. To be effective in keeping up with dynamic system provisioning, technical teams need access to all tiers of the computing environment to reduce operations overhead.

Hosting providers, such as Amazon Web Services and Rackspace innovate new integration patterns – including ones in the core of the network – to get their job done. Network operating systems that are open, like Extreme XOS enable large scale hosting providers to look deeper into networking gear and start to tune it themselves. And enterprises may follow this trend.

Servers Don’t Sleep at Night, but Applications and Admins Do

For a long time, networks have been used to detect the peers and devices. Many of us use the nearly ubiquitous DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), which is the the thing that automatically assigns IP addresses to a PC when plugging into the network.

In an analogy, there is a need for a “super DHCP” is needed that can keep up with the highly virtualized cloud infrastructure per virtual instance. To do this, engineers look deeper to find efficiencies in how the network talks to the hardware and software for the virtual machines.

A good example of benefit for this is where a resource has peak loads during the day. Due to natural usage, the applications compute power is not utilized during the night. Using monitoring and provisioning tools, the network can de-provision the extra hardware and offer it to another service. This “freeing up” allocation saves power and money.

This is a simple example of where virtual data center solutions are being innovated in the industry to figure out how to further timeshare the computing resources. The network has the ability to help manage the scale down to the moment is enabled by it’s reach to everything over IP (Internet Protocol).

The Open Network Wins, Developers Rule

Extreme Networks is betting IT leaders that have become very familiar with Linux and open source Hypervisors like XEN want to tweak the network. For the data center manager that wants to go into the core network engines innovate, there comes a need for APIs, SDKS, and open access libraries.

Extreme’s openness is in the form of web services, many offered that are offered as XML or CLI scripting that allow integrate tools into the core of the network via XML, and configure edge ports for security and VOIP access as dynamic provisioning.

The company offers a code workbench of its own to download widgets to plug into the network. Designed for the open source developer, it shares the familiar pattern that presides in open source community for application frameworks and operating systems code sharing.

Shown in the diagram, Extreme’s network offers real-time provisioning of code widgets in the network.

Play Nice: the Networks Worst Enemy May be Success

Will the network evolve to see an open source player that drives change in pricing and value?

In the rush to enable new efficiencies we wonder if this is an Apple A-HA moment in the making. The question seems to be can the giants in the space balance the fine line of better end-to-end experience of managing the environment and whether vendors do it best. If we follow the Apple example of industry success, and end-to-end play for the network may be in the cards.

Last month, Juniper announced it has created a new business group and commitment to an Junos ecosystem.

Juniper has made a big move towards open source innovation in it’s recent re-branding and at least to one analyst, John Furrier from Silicon Angle, seems to be suggesting that Juniper Judo’ing Cisco, like Google did with Open and Microsoft. That probably doesn’t feel the least bit nice to the market leader, especially when Cisco is priming it’s engines for changing the Internet forever.

Cisco announced opening IOS in 2007 in an effort towards compartmentalizing IOS as part of its overall movement into a more software based organization. With the complex series of network enhancements and feature sets, it will be interesting to see how Cisco views “open” vs. “customizable” and where the control lives for network management and up-time.

When visiting the Cisco IOS website today, we see the standard license and no clear mention of open source licensing. Cisco strikes the balance between open and controlled in it’s a approach to defining what an open network is and where networks will be encapsulated as services.

We wonder if Cisco deliver the capabilities to pull more traffic into it’s end-to-end range, while open networking APIs rise as part of the network service stack. With this market, it’s likely both. At very least, open networking has a role in determining the fate of the network and where territories are being defined.

The Cloud is a Network of Services

The cloud is defining a world where service orientation rules – both the

software and physical layers. And, it is breaking the rules of workload distribution, where network topologies are changing. The requirements of connecting the layer 2 and layer 3 networks, as well as IT leaders that are building solutions for mass scaling (enterprises or service providers) are evolving and being driven by an ability to be efficient at the workload level.

Extreme Networks Technical Brief, Dynamic Network Virtualization Overview, explains the value of plug and play network components in today’s topology.

“By leveraging Extreme Networks ExtremeXOS, a modular, edge-to-core operating system, and our extensibility frame-work including Universal Port Scripting and an XML interface, Extreme Networks is able to tightly integrate the switching network with the virtualization environment to create a virtualization-aware network fabric that automates the network-level virtualization required in next generation data center and cloud computing environments. This unique functionality enables Extreme Networks to provide seamless support of virtualization capabilities across the various hypervisor platforms, including Citrix ZEN, Microsoft and VMware. The highly integrated solution allows the Extreme Networks solutions to trigger responses to virtualization moves as they happen in the network by virtue of a tightly integrated XML-based network management framework.”

Extreme, and now Juniper, are moving in the direction of offering IT administrators control points in networks and protocols to optimize it opens the market.

It looks promising to give administrators vendor leverage in buying services without vendor lock, or waiting for feature releases from the vendor. And, it mirrors the open-source movement in bringing communities together to solve problems and build compatible services.

Open APIs may define the cloud’s network of the future for large hosting providers. We wonder if for the enterprise.

Fletcher will unveil his newest creation, a lightweight group communication tool called SnapGroups. You probably going to like it a lot: it’s easy, it’s clear, it’s got good social design and it’s real time. Check out the screenshots below.

SnapGroups makes it really easy to create a group discussion around a particular topic, invite people, set variable privacy controls and then participate in that conversation as part of a whole “newsfeed” style stream of updates from all your various groups in one place. Fresh comments, likes and dislikes get pushed to your browser live using a home-made bit of AJAX and the whole thing couldn’t be much simpler. It’s a lot of fun to use, in fact.

Fletcher says this is only the beginning, that all kinds of features are still to come, but he’s focused on the basics for now. He started working on the site in October and says his favorite part of the project was “learning about the new technologies that have sprung up in the past couple years.” “The various databases that have come out recently are great,” he told us. “I’m using Mongo, but there are many interesting projects now.” The core of the site is written in C++.

Fletcher says SnapGroups will go live tomorrow morning. You should try it out when it does. Invites to groups will no doubt be flying around Twitter and Facebook. It may very well become something you want to use regularly. Hopefully there will be a way to export your conversations easily. Fletcher is a pretty straightforward guy and will probably implement just about anything that enough people ask for and that isn’t too hard to do.

Mark Fletcher has a habit of building relatively simple things, like the first major email list system and the first popular RSS reader, that end up being a defining player in the rise of a new era online. Simple, real-time group communication? Not at all hard to imagine that being a big new thing as well.

The purpose of the new tool, Google says on the new lab’s page, is to make “large datasets easy to explore, visualize and communicate”.

Google, with its access to an immense assortment of information, is in the perfect position to help us with ways to display this information.

Just as with the Chart Tools, Google’s Public Data Explorer will allow users to directly embed charts and other visual tools onto their websites. The charts will be dynamically created, so if the data updates, so will the chart.

Google first got into the public data game about a year ago and has been including this type of data in its search results.

Right now, there are 13 datasets available, ranging from something as specific as Education Statistics of California to World Development Indicators from the World Bank. Google has just added five new public data sources: the U.S. Center for Disease Control (think Google’s Flu Trends), the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, Eurostat, the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development, and the California Department of Education.

There are four choices for visualization styles – bar graph, line graph, map or bubble, and each has its advantage. After choosing a visual style, you can select what data points you would like to see and set variables such as time period.

Just as with the chart tools, we look forward to seeing how useful a tool like this can be for all those smaller organizations that don’t have the resources to hire a full-time web design team, but want to visually display data to help visualize trends. This could be a great tool for smaller journalistic organizations to compete with some of the big dogs.

One of the biggest parts of Microsoft’s keynote back in Barcelona, during Mobile World Congress, was the fact that Windows Phone 7 Series would finally do what everyone had been wishing for: integrate Xbox LIVE. They did show a couple screens of the hubs and subsequent tiles, and what it would all look like by the time this holiday season rolls around, but we were missing the most important part. We needed to see it in action. Well, ladies and gentlemen, that time has come. But, what we’ve been presented with has taken things to a whole new level ...

The common assumption was that arcade games would just work on the 7 Series devices. Youd be able to shop from the same Marketplace, and youd have your Gamerscore updated as you accomplished the necessary Achievements. All the standard material. But, as Eric Rudder showcases here at the TechEd Middle East conference, it goes beyond that. He shows us that he starts an arcade-style game, based on the popular fiction character Indiana Jones, from his computer. But then he tells us that when he needs to leave work, he can move the game (which has saved his level (approximately)) to his 7 Series device and play it on the bus on the way home.

Heres the kicker though. Lets say you love this Indiana Jones arcade game, and when you get home you wish you could just pick up where you left off, but on your big screen. Thats exactly what happens. Rudder then shows the same game, saved from your last save point, and playing on the Xbox 360. Seamless. Frankly, it just works. The fact that the XNA, Silverlight, and .NET framework all come into play here is paramount, and this video shows us that games are about to change in a big way.

Social Networking site Facebook is now offering its users the opportunity to share cash with each other, real cash that is.

You can send and receive small payments via a Facebook application called Buxter and the company behind Buxter that will process the transactions is online payments company ClickandBuy.

Setting it up is easy. If you already have a ClickandBuy account, and millions of people across the globe do, then all you have to do to take advantage of the service is set up your Buxter account on Facebook.

If you dont have a Click and Buy account then you need to set one up before you can load cash in or out of your Buxter account.

Transactions on the Buxter system are limited to a maximum of 50 euros or less and are free to process between friends although there are small fees (minimum of 2 euros) for transferring money out of Buxter and into your bank.

You cant make purchases from anywhere though; you will only be able to trade with your friends on Facebook.

To send cash to a friend you simply select your friends name from a drop down menu and enter the amount you want to send. Easy!

People share their statuses, their information and their pictures on Facebook so the question is why not share money there too? said Christian von Hammel-Bonten, senior vice president at ClickandBuy.

He hopes people will use the service to share expenses for things like cinema tickets and restaurant bills or small gifts; its not designed for anything more than that.

Were not trying to compete with national banking systems. This is not somewhere to pay your gas or rent he said.

To receive any cash you send to a friend they just have to accept the Buxter application and enter an email address.

That friend will then be free to transfer the money to any of their friends or into their bank account if they wish.

Buxter is the application that will see Facebook members use the platform not just as a way to stay in touch, but also as a fast, easy and secure way to exchange money or buy and sell products or services said Charles Fraenkl, chief executive of ClickandBuy.

The only currencies offered by the service at the moment are US dollars and Euros but support for the UK pound will be added in the coming weeks.

It will be interesting to see how many Facebook users end up using it.

Hulu’s days as a destination for free online video may be numbered.

The once-groundbreaking video-on-demand website may not be able to run on pre-roll ads alone, which don’t generate as much revenue as broadcast commercials. And the obvious alternative charging subscription or pay-per-view fees to viewers is likely to simply drive them back to live TV or DVR use.

Comedy Centrals decision to revoke its content from Hulu is just the latest blow to the site, which has struggled to support itself with ads. This will reduce traffic as viewers look elsewhere online for Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and other Comedy Central personalities. The inevitable addition of usage fees for consumers will only serve to reduce that traffic even further.

Hulu, in the end, may have innovated itself out of existence, certainly as it was envisioned. Adding a fee structure could attract new and potentially better content but the Hulu that users fell in love with will be gone, replaced with another Amazon Unbox, iTunes or Netflix.

Will Hulu be just another footnote in the expansive history of online applications? Stay tuned.

It touched the public network via EC2 (and now a host of hosts) it formed the Cloud and fused a new generation of the Internet. Service orientated also hits the data centers and this means things like switches, servers, and disk.

At the core of the movement of virtualization movement is freedom of the physical environment. Optimize hardware performance and set the workload free. In the process of doing this, a promise of cost savings has set a off a storm in re-factoring the data center.

This is the first in a series of posts taking a look at areas of the data center and how an openness strategy become a driver for winning customers by bringing costs down.

We took a look at the storage landscape from the eyes of Hitachi Data Systems, “HDS”.

We spoke with Hu Yoshida, CTO of HDS. He gave us a practical overview on how the needle of enterprise costs are being reduced focusing on reducing operational costs.

One thing the he mentioned was that Hitachi’s HDS division was able to grow in the storage business in this tough climate, which is amazing considering it is an industry that follows economic spending as a whole.

Yoshida attributes part of this to HDS decision to deliberately disrupt their own “closed” box solution where storage and management are sold together. This allows IT shops to have more choice, and decouple vendors. He said that this was a big decision for the company, as it opened up more competition to a core business.

Protocol vs. API

Yoshida said that the team at HDS decided it was inevitable for this protocol level standardization to exist. His team felt that HDS needed to be a leader in this opportunity. He cited a customer that uses an HDS head as a management function that had NetApp behind it as a pattern they supported that several years ago would have been done by partnership rather than protocol level support.

Although in this scenario HDS didn’t win “all tiers” of this storage solution, it was able to be a fabric and join a customer that “loves NetApp” and loves HDS too.

Mr. Yoshida said that his company decided to fully embrace the protocol level integration with the surrounding systems, instead of only releasing only APIs, as a means to allow more competition – and cooperation in the ecosystem through technology rather than selective partnerships.

Considering the Tiers

An area of storage that is ripe for cost savings is supporting different types of solutions, e.g. production vs. development and classes of storage based on the application. In his blog post, New Considerations for Tiered Storage, Hu examines reduction of costs.

Looking under the covers we see that there is a lot of questions to ask in the details of these strategies, and marketing matters in how solutions are perceived and how different types of hardware (for example Seagate vs. HDS) make a difference for buyers, and that to be a leader, it is key to have answers across the industry ecosystem.

When we look at the decision being on moving the cost needle down for operations management instead of hardware savings, it becomes clear that playing nicely pays. HDS is a company that plays on both sides of the storage spectrum (management layer and disk) and it’s partnerships include relationships with HP (as OEM) and companies like Cisco and Brocade as go-to-market partners. It is tempting to “hardwire” solutions together, but it is a bigger win when instead these are loosely coupled and partner-ready.

Looking at it from the angle of cost reduction for open standards gives the pivot point to consider this natural tension offered by virtualization has a promise binding vendors together to optimize their solutions for the plug-and-play data center.

Does an open protocol powered data center reduce total costs? IBM, HP, Cisco, NetApp, Oracle…Hitachi thinks so, do you?
