These days, where there are desktops, laptops, tablets and e-readers — which is basically everywhere — there are e-books. And that’s great news for anyone trying to gain credibility in the marketplace, increase traffic to their website or just plain improve their revenue stream. Offering e-books has become one of the hottest new tools to help boost business.

Drive Traffic/Expand Your Mailing List

Publishing an e-book on a topic related to your business is one more way you can market yourself and your offerings. Whether you’re a butcher, a baker or a candlestick maker, you’ve got valuable knowledge to share. Obviously, selling e-books can provide you with additional income, but there are other benefits of producing an e-book. In fact, an e-book might benefit you most if you give it away for free.

People love free information, and if you can get the word out that they can receive a free e-book if they join your mailing list or visit your website, you can create buzz and possibly new customers. You can build trust with your audience by giving them valuable content, demonstrating that you know your topic, and showing that you work hard to provide a high-quality product or service.

Writing Your E-book

Many e-books — as well as many traditionally published books — are simply a reprinting of past blogs or articles, kind of a “best of” series. Excerpts from newsletters will work, too.

If you don’t currently have the body of work to draw from, you can work in reverse and start your blog with an eye toward publishing your first e-book in perhaps six months to a year, depending how frequently you post new material.

Another approach is to select a topic related to your business. Say you’re a website designer. You might create an e-book entitled something along the lines of “10 Things You Should Know Before You Build a Website.”

If anyone knows what to be aware of when designing a site, it’s you, right? What if you’re a caterer? Your e-book could offer tips for entertaining or information on how to plan a large party or event. You don’t have to give away the store to entice readers, but you should offer valuable information and insights worthy of an expert in your field.

And if, like so many people, you’d prefer a root canal rather than face a blank page on your computer, no worries. These sites offer you access to a wide variety of creative professionals including writers, graphic designers, illustrators, even proofreaders. (And yes, ask to see past samples before you take the plunge with anyone!)

Of course you will have to give the people you hire information and guidance until the content meets your approval; they may be talented, but that doesn’t make them omniscient.

The Publishing Process

When you think of books these days, most people’s first thoughts are Amazon and Barnes and Noble. And rightfully so. In May 2011, the New York Times reported that online bookseller Amazon was now selling more e-books than hardcover and softcover books. Not surprisingly, Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com are publishing most of them as well.

While there are other publishers out there, a quick check of the online publishing arms of either of these giants will give you a good working knowledge of what’s required, how long it will take and how much it will cost. You can also look into having them sell your e-book for you, another bit of business-enhancing credibility: “I’m a published author and my book is available through Amazon.com.”

Important Note: Before you submit your manuscript anywhere, be sure you own all the publication rights. That means carefully reviewing any agreements you made with anyone who may have contributed to your book. If you don’t have full rights and you go ahead and publish, you might end up on the wrong side of a lawsuit.

The Final Chapter

E-books offer myriad benefits that traditional books don’t. E-books are easy to give or sell to customers. You don’t have to keep boxes of inventory in your garage, and you don’t have to pay shipping costs. Customers can download e-books even while you’re sleeping or on vacation.

You can offer e-books for free. If you try to offer traditionally published books for free, you’ll still be responsible for printing and shipping costs. Depending on how you choose to publish your e-book, you may still pay some up-front costs. But the files themselves cost you nothing to print or ship, and you can share as many as you want.

Anyone can publish an e-book in a short amount of time. Traditionally published books can take years to be ready, but many of today’s self-publishing packages are inexpensive and can be done on your own timetable.

4 Simple Ways to Reduce Comment Spam

There is no better way to receive support and interaction from your site visitors than to receive comments on your blog posts. You would be keen to know your readers’ thoughts and their comments are a way to increase your visibility on Google too.

As such, every time you receive an email notifying you that you have a comment posted, you get all excited only to find that spam has been left in the comment box. It could be an ad or just some totally incomprehensible nonsense but either is of no value to you!

So how do you reduce comment spam (and the false excitement)? There are many things you can do or plugins to use; here are 5 of the best ways to reduce comment spam on your blog:

1. Disallow comments on older posts

- Older posts are unlikely to get much attention from readers, so you can consider closing the post to comments to prevent autobots, software of scripts from targeting and posting comment spam on your blog.

There is a feature under your control panel that closes comments on a post automatically after the post has been uploaded after a certain length of time, so you don’t have to do it manually. All you need to do is to set your preferred length of time.

2. Ban spam IP addresses

- You need a plugin such as WP-Ban to help you do this. You need to help the plugin do its job by saving the IP addresses that you have identified as spam. When you receive a comment spam, note the IP address, add it to the blacklisted list and you will never receive spam from that address anymore due to the ban imposed.

However, only ban the IP address if all you ever receive from it is spam and you are certain that no good visitors would ever come from that IP. This is because any visitor coming from that same host name will be blocked and unable to view your blog too!

3. Install spam-protection plugins

- The lazy or those with zero-blogging knowledge would rejoice at this method of using a plugin to eliminate spam for them. All right, to be fair, I am one of those who is lazy and who likes to use these plugins too.

All you need to do is to install the plugin and let it do its work. One popular plugin which almost all of us use is Akismet which comes bundled with WordPress, so you don’t even have to go hunting around for it. Akismet works excellently to prevent spam from being auto-approved but to get to the root of the problem, it is advisable to use another method in combination with Akismet for greater spam reduction.

4. Set some rules

- The above methods would have prevented most spam from getting to your blog but sometimes, a few comment slip through. These are usually those which can be quite specific to the topic of discussion, contains keywords instead of a name in the “commentator’s name” field and has links to a website which is related to the keywords.

So what do you do when you come across a comment that is actually useful but doesn’t have an author that you can trace? The solution pretty much depends on what your rules are. If you think that using keywords instead of a name is “spammy”, leave a note on your blog asking commenters to use their names or an email address, else their comments will be deleted. You could also replace their names with the names in their email addresses or change the names to “Anonymous” if a keyword was used in place of a name.

No one hates spam more than bloggers who have worked hard to create content, only to find an assortment of useless comments on their website and spend precious time going through and deleting them. Getting rid of comment spam is easy as most methods only need to be set up once, so there is no reason for you to put up with comment spam any longer!

Since the recent update, many internet marketers reported that their website ranking suddenly drop from position #1 to the very bottom. SEO Ranking Reports are Dead

Ok, not dead, but a lot less relevant.

Google’s personalized search is making agency ranking reports less and less relevant. Many current agency clients in emerging SEO/SEM markets, such as Central PA, may still be chasing the wrong metrics, and measuring agency-success by them.

Why? Because they have been trained to look at unique visits, and keyword rankings, and that’s all there is to it.

Google wants to rank site content based on an individual’s search behaviors, preferences, etc. See below:

Because I am frequently engaged with webtalentmarketing.com, and it’s associated social profiles, especially – I suspect – their Google+ profile, they rank higher for my personalized search results than they would for un-personalized results.

So, how likely is it that a client’s site will rank well for a search in the client’s market where the searcher has made repeat visits and/or purchases from the client’s competition (i.e., been repeatedly engaged)?

It seems, if they are engaged/converting with the competition, than that relationship is working for the searcher and the website, and Google likes to repeat processes that have proven successful. What does this mean for a client? When you give them a ranking report, it shows where they will show up in Google if there is no personalization, which isn’t where they are actually showing up anymore.

Webtalentmarketing.com is no longer in position 3 – so their ranking results report would tell them they are in position 25, when, in fact, they may show up higher for some, and not at all for others.

Personalization is now forced on users of Google and Bing if they are not logged in.

When you are logged in, you have the option to turn personalization off – if you are aware of the possibility, and have any idea where to turn it off (see the two paired grey buttons in the upper-right hand corner of the screen? The globe means “un-personalized” and the little “person” means personalized).

So, a ranking report is now an indicator of relevance, not a metric whereby you judge the average click through rate of a listing in position X, to determine what your traffic SHOULD be, etc., etc.

The Problem Presented with Personalized Search

How do you reach searchers in your market if Google is changing the way the online search game is played? The answer is Engagement – through Social and Website Content, and Advertising.

Social Engagement

Google continues to incorporate social signals into their ranking algorithm. But how will that play into search ranking? If your competitor’s engage with their market through social campaigns and initiatives, and you don’t, then you’ll be missing out on the added ranking factors to place your site in front of searchers.

Content Publishing and Marketing

More, better-quality content equals more links. Why? Because content people enjoy and find value in, is content they want to share, and bookmark, and come back to again and again. More links and shares equals greater page and domain authority. Greater page and domain authority equals higher rank (which is now just ‘relevance’).

Once you have published content, you cannot assume that “they will come”. You must have a content marketing plan, and as well as a content creation plan. Consistently putting quality content in front of people will build credibility, brand awareness, and trust.

If you create conversion goals on content pages designed to generate leads, and market that content well, you have the potential to get in front of the consumer while they are in a research phase. Content served in search results for informational queries would be informational, not transactional, so the ranking factors Google will use to serve informational content would be based on user engagement – time on site, bounce rate, pages per visit for people who begin on that page, as opposed to ecommerce conversions.

Note: Even though ranking reports are now inaccurate, like so much of the data SEOs have to use, Google’s Webmaster Tools provides your top 1000 queries each month, on a rolling 30-day period, and their average rank in search over that time. You cannot get data prior to the 30 days they show you, so you should download your data every 30 days for historical records.

Advertising – Search and Content Networks

You should be advertising online. Your ads should include a value proposition, and a call to action, which should lead to a landing page on your site that reiterates the value proposition and call to action, and is optimized for conversion and user experience. If users get to your page through an ad and convert, than you are demonstrating to Google that you are actively improving User Experience (UX), care about UX, and Google will factor that into their ranking algorithm.

I don’t know the formula, but if your company converts X number of users for product A, and your competitor converts X or less for comparable product B, then Google could potentially consider your site as a viable and relevant option to serve to a consumer who has purchased from your competitor on the grounds that they may have a better experience with your site, and possibly your product because more people seem to be buying the comparable product from your site. Does that make sense?

Okay, but search only takes up 4% of time spent online, so how do you get in front of consumers in your market when they aren’t on search? Follow them around and serve them banner ads on a CPM basis to keep your brand and value proposition in front of them.

Use a newsletter and email marketing. Use conventional offline marketing mediums to direct them to your site and social profiles. Continue to engage them in all areas, and, over time, you will naturally do better and improve traffic and conversions on your site – no matter where you are actually ranking in search results.

“I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love” – a line from the legendary Beatles song “Can’t buy me love” was recorded in 1964.

But the debate – “Can money by Happiness” has been ongoing for a longer time.

Are you happy when you buy things for yourself ? What happens when you buy things for others, does the happiness quotient increase or decrease ? … Money can’t buy you love, can it or make you happy?

Micheal Norton, a professor of psychology presents a very interesting experiment about how we feel when we buy and spend.

Through this interesting Ted Talk he tries to answer some of the questions on money and happiness.

6 Stress Reducing Tips For Bloggers and Work at Home Professionals

Blogging or working from home can be great but it also has pitfalls that if not watched carefully, can snowball into stress. Maybe there are too many inside distractions keeping you from getting your work done or maybe there’s an obnoxious neighbor next door that plays his music too loud.

Whatever the situation, it’s best to nip it in the bud as soon as possible and also to find alternative ways of coping with a work from home career.

We know what it’s like to write, design and blog from the comfort of a work at home arrangement, but also we know that stress can and will creep up when we least expect it to.

Below we look at six ways to nip work at home stress in the bud. Once and for all.

1. Meet With A Friend -

This one is at the top of my list, because meeting with a friend can do wonders for your mood, your productivity and your stress levels. Assuming of course, you have picked someone you actually enjoying being with. You can visit one another, take a walk, go for a quick snack or maybe even go shopping. But most importantly, work is not to be discussed.

2. Fire Up Your Hobby -

Hobbies are great because they can distract us from our worries and keep us balanced, simply by keeping one interested and immersed in the activity. Be it knitting, reading, coin collecting, pottery, gardening or any of the numerous hobbies people pick up – do this when you’re running low on energy and see your worries take a hike.

3. Take A Run -

Another excellent mood booster. Taking a walk can enhance your overall well being by giving you a nice change of pace and a much needed kick in the pants. Even just a four block walk in your neighborhood can do wonders for your serotonin (a/k/a mood) levels.

4. Head To The Beach -

Who doesn’t love and appreciate a leisurely stroll on the beach? Most people love the beach and reason being is that it has a calming effect. The water, the waves, the sound of the waves; all of it can produce a nice relaxing state of mind.

5. Take A Coffee Break -

This means leave the house for a bit and go grab a cup of coffee at your local coffee shop and enjoy a nice 15 to 20 minute break. Most corporate employees get at least two 15 minute breaks for every 8 hour work shift – every day, why shouldn’t you. Since you work from home it means you’re the boss, so give yourself a break.

6. Give Yourself The Day Off -

This one is my personal favorite. When you’ve done a good job and are all caught up with your work, give yourself a day off. One day where you could really use the time off and do something else. Just make sure, it’s not a day where clients are counting on you to deliver work or when you have a deadline to meet. Instead pick a day, you know you can take off, and enjoy it fully.

If there’s a running theme in my six tips above, it’s that sometimes less is more. As in doing less can give you the energy and stamina you need to come back stronger and accomplish more the next day.

This is why most of my tips above involve stepping away from your desk, your home and even your work. For a period of time, of course. But to step away for a bit and recharge those batteries. Your brain, heart, body and your audience – will thank you.
