CII's Sports Management Capacity Building Workshop in Delhi & Mumbai

Sports management has become a high profile career option in India and abroad. One of the countries where it has reached the next stage as an evolving profession is Australia, who has led the way by integrating sports management in university business degrees. Against this backdrop, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with Australian Trade Commission and Deakin University, Australia is organizing a workshop on Sports Management Capacity Building in New Delhi and Mumbai. The sports management industry is a growing arena in India with more and more professionals needed to run different sports, be it the federations, clubs, franchises, sports management companies and more. The first of the two events will be held on Wednesday, April 10 at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi; while the second on Friday, April 12 at the Hyatt Regency in Mumbai. Topics on both days, in both cities will be Overview of Sports Industry in India, Skills Gap in Indian Sports Industry – What is missing for the industry to be successful?, Sport Management in India – Linking Education to industry requirement, Review of existing Sport Management Academic Programs in India, The Deakin Experience and a closing session. But there will be a mainly different set of speakers for the CII's Sports Management Capacity Building Workshop in New Delhi and Mumbai.

Mumbai Indian led by Harbhajan singh opened the IPL 5 with a winning streak, Chennai super king the defending champion fell on back with a low score total, batting second chasing 112 was not a uphill task for Mumbai Indian, especially if you have experts of 20-20 format any score seems easy to chase. RE Levi who is known for his quick style batting made debut half century in DLF IPL 5, sachin tendulkar who was looking good, unfortunately got retired hurt but as the total was not so big easily chased by Mumbai Indians.

Ishant's sensational spell sends Kochi crashing

Ishant Sharma bulldozed the Kochi Tuskers' batting line-up in a sensational five-wicket spell as Deccan Chargers spanked the hosts by 55 runs in their Indian Premier League match in Kochi on Wednesday.

Before Ishant's fiery spell, Chargers skipper Kumar Sangakkara scored a defying 65 off 47 balls under pressure to help the Chargers post a modest 129 for seven after being asked to bat at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium. The Chargers then dismissed the hosts for 74 in 16.3 overs, Ishant producing one of the most memorable fast bowling spells in the history of the T20 league and finishing with incredible figures of 3-0-12-5.

Chargers badly needed a victory, having lost four of the six matches before and placed at the bottom of the points table. Now they have jumped to sixth place.

The track had helped the Kochi pacers as well earlier, but Ishant extracted the maximum out of the juicy pitch as he hit the deck hard. It was the third-best performance by a bowler in the history of tournament. Rajasthan Royals' Sohail Tanvir had recorded best figures in the inaugural edition in 2008 when he took six four 16 against Chennai.

Kochi had not scored a single run off the bat and lost four batsmen when they began their chase. Ishant was responsible for the mayhem as he ripped apart the rival top order, striking thrice in his first over. He dismissed Parthiv Patel (0), Raiphi Gomez (0) and Brad Hodge (0). Dale Steyn (3/16) had dismissed the dangerous Brendon McCullum (0) in the first over and the two runs that Kochi managed on the scoreboard at that time came through a leg-bye and wide.

Ishant sent shock waves in the rival camp when he returned to bowl his second over and trapped Kedar Jadhav (0) off the first ball and had Mahela Jayawardene (4) caught behind with the last. The scorecard read a horrible 11 for six in four overs. Ravindra Jadeja (23) and Thisara Perera (22) though showed nerves of steel as they responded to the tough situation with a gritty 36-run stand for the seventh wicket.

It could not help them avert defeat but saved them from suffering the ignominy of recording the lowest total in the IPL history, which is 58 by Rajasthan Royals, against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2009.

Earlier, Sangakkara came up with a terrific 65-run knock after being bowled off a no-ball to lead Deccan Chargers to a modest total.

Put in to bat after Kochi won the toss, Deccan Chargers were in a spot of bother at 20 for three in 5.2 overs, but Sangakkara, in the company of Cameron White (31), rescued the team from the precarious position with a defying 90-run stand for the fourth wicket. Sangakkara, when batting at the individual score of five, was bowled by S Sreesanth in the fourth over of the innings, but never looked back after getting the reprieve and led the Chargers' amazing recovery. His superb knock, under pressure, came off 47 balls and contained 10 boundaries, while White's 34-ball innings was studded with two fours and a six. R Vinay Kumar (3/25) dismissed both Sangakkara and White with the last two balls of his final over, the 17th of the innings, to conclude his spell on a superb note. White holed out to Jayawardene at deep mid-wicket while Sangakkara edged the next delivery to stumper Parthiv Patel. The most productive session for the Chargers was between over number 11 and 15 when they scored 53 runs, while the last five overs fetched 39 runs. Earlier, with a juicy wicket to bowl on, Kochi pacer RP Singh (2/21) gave the hosts a dream start, dismissing both the openers -- Sunny Sohal (1) and Shikhar Dhawan (4) -- in successive overs.

The left-arm pacer trapped Sohal with the last ball of the opening over and then had Dhawan caught by Raiphi Gomez off the second ball of his second over.

However, he was unlucky to not have the wicket of Bharat Chipli, who drove straight to Brendon McCullum at extra cover, but the Kiwi player failed to latch on to the chance. Sreesanth then bowled Sangakkara with a gem of a delivery, but that turned out to be a no-ball. The visitors finally ran out of luck as R Vinay Kumar had Chipli (4) caught by Sreesanth at mid-off.

The Kochi pace trio exploited the lively track, which offered bounce and seam, well as they gave away just 20 runs in the first six overs, conceding just one boundary. The Chargers needed Sangakkara to stay at the crease as long as possible and build a partnership along with White and the duo did not disappoint their teammates.

At half-way stage, they were 37 for three but gradually Sangakkara and White got into the groove and started punishing the bad balls. Only two boundaries were scored in the first 10 overs but then four were hit in two successive overs, three coming off the bat of Lankan batsman. White then broke the shackles by dispatching Ravindra Jadeja for a huge six over square leg and Sangakkara was just getting better and better as he smashed his compatriot Thisara Perera for a couple of boundaries. The former Lankan skipper raised his fifty with a sweep boundary off Jadeja and took the team past 100-run mark before being dismissed by Vinay Kumar.

Royal challenger Bangalore won a close match and kept the pace up of their winning wheel. After Chris Gayle’s returns RCB reunited its strength in many folds, but surprisingly Virat Kohili was on fire today and started the innings chase swiftly, once it was looking so simpler enough that RCB would have won the match in 15 over, but the nature of this format is so complicated that match turned heavy on RCB side after depart of Virat but captain Vettory and JS Mohammed managed the dis-balance and helped RCB win the match trashing three balls in hand.

Delhi Dare Devils target was not a big mountain to climb for RCB, Virender Sehwag and David Warner started the innings superb till power-play and they were approaching towards a good target but the unfortunate run out of Viru shocked the spectator in the stadium, last show audience had a good taste of fire balls around the stadium with the magical batting of these two, but expectation remained unfulfilled, any way the responsibility is not always on one or two batsmen James Hope and Venugopala batted with patience and at least gave Delhi daredevil a decent total. Almost Delhi was on its verge of winning but Vettory and JS Mohammad snatched the victory from Devils.

IPL a second career plan for players...!!

I believe the IPL should be given a special window in the ICC cricket calendar for just one reason and one reason only: because the players benefit from it greatly.

Some of us today, who in some capacity or the other are connected with the game and are making a living from it, should be grateful to the players who are performing in the sun. "Just imagine if tomorrow, for some reason, the players stopped playing. We will all be out of jobs," a fellow commentator said. It is a remark I will never forget.

It is actually the simple reality of our professions. And it is a reality that we in media, sports management or administration should never forget. By allowing current players to play in the IPL, without having to choose between country and club, the administrators have a great chance to show the players gratitude, which is something they don't get enough of.

A cricketer spends the prime of his life, starting from about age 10, on the cricket field, training to become a top-class player. When he finally becomes one of the rare few to make it to the top, he discovers he has only a short time there to make the most of his acquired skills. Other performing artists are more fortunate than cricketers in this regard, and yes, I don't have to say this, you know it well: a 21-year cricket career is possible only for the chosen ones.

Of course, cricketers who can build around their core cricket skills are able to carve out careers in media, coaching and other related occupations, and thus sustain themselves after their cricket careers are over.

But there are many who are incapable of developing other skills, and feel completely lost in the world outside cricket. It's a horrible feeling when the cricketer starts to realise that the skills he acquired with great effort over the years, the skills he was so proud of and which people paid good money to watch, are slowly beginning to desert him with age. And then that day comes when it dawns on him that the world has no use for him anymore. I guess that is a fact of life that hits everyone at some point of their lives, but cricketers are less prepared for it than most.

For a man who has largely lived an uncommon life, it's not easy to merge into the common world. This situation is frightening, to say the least, and there are numerous cricketers who are trying to make a go of it. I meet such players quite often, and it distresses me to see that many are not doing a great job. The IPL is a boon for such cricketers, who find life after cricket tough. It is one way of making sure we have fewer players like this in future.

I know international cricket makes money for players, but it does not even come close to matching what one IPL season can put in their pockets. Maybe we need to find out why international cricket, the highest level of our sport, is not making the most money for players.

Take the example of Lasith Malinga. He didn't have the fitness to be a regular member of the Sri Lanka Test side - from which he has just announced his retirement - and he perhaps doesn't know how long his international career will last. It's difficult to see him making a career in the media. So should he be grudged if he wants to secure his future with a few IPL seasons? Taking this argument forward, should he be placed in a position where he has to choose between his own future and playing for his country?

Increasingly players from countries like Sri Lanka, West Indies and New Zealand will face such questions, and it is unfair on them as individuals.

The other advantage of the IPL is that you don't have to be a truly extraordinary player to make the big bucks. If you have decent Twenty20 skills, and the franchisee feels you are well-behaved and not going to give them too much trouble, your life is made.

I wonder if you have noticed a dramatic change on the Indian cricket stage recently. At the World Cup final, for instance, apart from the hundreds of screaming fans in the stands, who were the people the cameras constantly panned to? They were mostly politicians, Bollywood celebrities, rich businessmen and cricket officials. The couple or so cricketers you may have seen during the coverage were former players who are now involved in administration and thus were able to get prime seats.

Where were the other former India players? Mumbai is home to more cricketers who played for India than any other city, and surely these players would have liked to see their team play in the final of a World Cup. So where were the Wadekars and the Nadkarnis? Either they did not turn up or were not given the VIP seats that TV cameras generally find famous people in. I have learnt that these past stalwarts increasingly find themselves out of place in this new world of Indian cricket.

Whether we like it or not, we have come to accept that fame, power and money open most doors in the world. The IPLs may, if not anything else, ensure that the average retired cricketer has at least the last of those three attributes to find a VIP seat at a World Cup final.

The IPL has its flaws, but no other cricket event in history has created so much wealth for such a large number of players. As a former India cricketer I am glad it is making so many domestic players financially secure. It's up to the other cricket boards in the world, particularly those who can't hope to generate such revenues themselves, to help their players share in the IPL's riches.

Delhi's win balanced the fight in IPL 4....!!

Back with a bang after a dismal start to the season, the Delhi Daredevils would look to carry on with their newly-gained confidence when they take on Deccan Chargers on home turf on Tuesday.

The Virender Sehwag-led outfit, which was completely off-colour in its first two outings against Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals, silenced critics on MOnday night in Mumbai by chasing down an imposing target of 188 for a three-wicket victory. David Warner (46), Sehwag (37) Venugopal Rao (31) and Aaron Finch (25) finally shone with the bat to power Delhi to what was a desperately-needed triumph.

Going into the game against Deccan Chargers on Tuesday at the Ferozshah Kotla ground, Delhi will again rely heavily on Sehwag and his opening partner Warner to provide them with a solid platform.

Apart from the openers, the Delhi team would also pin hopes on Venugopal Rao, who has shown sparks of brilliance, Aaron Finch and James Hopes to come good with their bats.

They would also require expensive buy Irfan Pathan, back to cricket after injury, to fire with both the bat and ball.

In the bowling department, however, Delhi will have to quickly get their act together if they want to counter the likes of Deccan skipper Kumar Sangakkara, Jean Paul Duminy, Bharat Chipli and Shikhar Dhawan.

Other than Morne Morkel, no one else seemed to have troubled the opponents so far in the tournament and if the injured South African speedster fails to make it to the playing XI tomorrow, the team would be desperately looking at Ashok Dinda, Shahbaz Nadeem and Pathan to prove their worth.

Delhi would also be keen to make a strong comeback in front of their home crowd here, having suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Mumbai Indians by eight wickets in their inaugural game when they got bundled out of a mere 95.

Delhi certainly start favourites against Deccan Chargers, who have won just one match out of four so far. Yet, it will be at their own peril that Delhi would be taking their opponents lightly and let the advantage slip out of their hands.

The Hyderabad outfit are expected to come out all guns blazing here, as a defeat tomorrow would mean an uphill task for them to book a spot in the next stage of the competition. But for that, the Chargers need to pull up their socks in all three departments of the game.

Besides their 33-run victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore, Deccan Chargers have been far from impressive in this edition of the IPL so far. However, they are aware of their potential and hence, would be desperate to get into the rhythm at the earliest.

The batting that boasts of players such as Sangakkara, Duminy, Daniel Christian, Shikhar Dhawan, Ishank Jaggi and Chipli just need to click as a unit and peak at the right time.

As far as their bowling is concerned, the team would be hoping that South African pacer Dale Steyn and Manpreet Gony, who claimed three wickets each against Royal Challengers, would chip in with some useful contributions tomorrow as well, while Ishant Sharma, Christian and Amit Mishra will also get into the rhythm.

Deccan Chargers finally won their first match in DLF IPL 2011, thanks to super batting by B Chipli and some useful contributions from Sangakkara and S Sohal. Their bowlers striked when it needed the most and got RCB wickets at regular intervals and never let them settle. Finally DC were able to win the match by 33 runs and that too at their home ground.

Earlier, Royal Challengers Bangalore won the toss and elected to field first. This match was crucial for both teams so that they can get the momentum going as the tournament progresses. Royal Challengers Bangalore got the first breakthrough when they got the wicket of S Dhawan in the 3rd over. But Deccan Chargers batsmen played well and S Sohal (38 runs off 37 balls) and Sangakkara (36 off 25) put pressure on bowlers of RCB and took the score to 70 in 9 overs. Sohal was the next to depart but this brought B Chipli on the crease. He played an outstanding innings and scored 61 not out 35 balls which included 5 fours and 3 sixes. His innings provided the much needed acceleration to the Deccan Charger’s innings and they posted a total of 175/5 in 20 overs.

Chasing 176 to win, RCB never looked confident as they got the early blow when T Dilshan was out in the second over. This triggered the fall of wickets and RCB were reduced to 29/4 in 6.4 overs. RCB’s gamble to promote Zaheer Khan to accelerate the run scoring backfired as he was out for a duck. With openers back in pavilion, the onus was on AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli but AB de Villiers failed as he was also out for a duck. Virat Kohli and S Tiwary then moved the RCB scorecard with ones and two’s but the run rate was jumping at rapid pace. RCB scored 53/4 in first 10 overs and needed another 123 runs in last 10 overs. The task was daunting and S Tiwary succumbed to it and was out after scoring just 7 runs off 10 balls leaving RCB struggling at 56/5 in 11.1 overs. Virat Kohli was the only batsmen who showed some resistance and scored 71 runs but the required rate was too high and thus his superb batting effort went to vain as RCB lost the match by a 33 runs.

Australia completes clean sweep in Bangladesh

Australia completed a clinical clean sweep of the three-match ODI series against hosts Bangladesh with a another confident 66-run win on Wednesday.

Australia led by Mike Hussey's first ODI century in four years posted 361 for 8 after opting to bat first.

But Bangladesh provided Australia a scare by reaching 152 for 1 in 25 overs.

Imrul Kayes (93 off 95 balls) led the charge for th hosts with the experienced Shahriar Nafees (60).

Debutant paceman James Pattinson turned the match in Australia's favour in which he claimed the wicket of Kayes. Later Mitchell Johnson, who had gone for 36 runs off his first four overs, replaced Pattinson and claimed Nafees.

All-rounder Shane Watson then scalped two victims in the 39th over. The hosts slipped to 223 for 5 needing almost 13 runs an over. In the end the hosts ended at 295 for 6.

Earlier, Australia was well served by Hussey (108 off 91 balls), Watson (72 off 40 balls), Ricky Ponting (47 off 50 balls), Clarke (47 off 62 balls) and Johnson (41 off 24 balls).
