Captain Dhoni retires from Test Cricket with immediate effect

One of India's greatest Test Captains under whose leadership India became the No. 1 team in the Test Rankings MS Dhoni, has decided to retire from Test Cricket citing the strain of playing all formats of Cricket.

M S Dhoni has chosen to retire from Test Cricket with immediate effect in order to concentrate on ODI and T20 formats.

BCCI while respecting the decision of M S Dhoni to retire from Test Cricket, wishes to thank him for his enormous contribution to Test Cricket and the laurels that he has brought to India.

Virat Kohli will be the captain of the Indian Team for the Fourth and Final Test against Australia to be played in Sydney from the 6th of January 2015.

Five Issues for England to Resolve Against Sri Lanka

After a shocking run of form since last summer’s Ashes victory over Australia there are more than a handful of issues that England must address before their upcoming test series against Sri Lanka. Here are five of the most pressing concerns….but fans of cricket betting could certainly come up with a few more.

First and foremost England must ensure that Alistair Cook is the right man to captain the side. Assured of his place, eloquent and experienced, Cook always looked like the only choice to replace Andrew Strauss, but his judgement was called into question at times last summer when his declaration timings and field placings showed a lack of confidence. England’s 3-0 Ashes victory helped to mask Cook’s misjudgements- Betfair punters will know that the series victory could, and should, have been more comprehensive. Events since last summer have only served to make Cook’s position even less secure.

After the third test of England’s disastrous Ashes tour to Australia last summer, Graeme Swann, one of the side’s most consistent and talented performers, called time on his England career and, in the process, left the side in desperate need of a new frontline spinner. Monty Panesar came in to replace Swann in the fourth Ashes test but, at the age of 32, he is not a long term solution. The selectors may go with Monty against Sri Lanka but, if they are looking to the future, they may opt to throw in Simon Kerrigan or Scott Borthwick. There are few players who are obviously ready to fill Swann’s shoes but Betfair fans will know that the spin issue as a key problem for England to overcome if they are to trouble Sri Lanka.

England’s third issue to resolve is their wicketkeeper selection. Matt Prior was dropped after the third test defeat in Perth following a poor run of form but his replacement, Jonny Bairstow was unable to take advantage. With a lack of experience all over the field, the selectors must be considering a recall for Prior but, if they opt not to go for the Sussex keeper, then Bairstow doesn’t seem to offer a real solution. One man who has caught the eye in ODIs and could offer a new dimension to England’s batting line-up is Jos Buttler; the 23 year old would certainly excite Betfair punters but, with England in turmoil, is it the right time to throw him in. Whoever the selectors go for, they must stick with him all summer to have any hope of regaining consistency.

The fallout from the most recent Ashes series has left England’s middle-order devastated. With Kevin Pietersen having been forcibly retired by the selectors and Jonathan Trott looking unlikely to return after a stress related condition, the time is right for new blood. Ian Bell should be moved up the order to bat at number three, with two of Joe Root, James Vince, Eoin Morgan or James Taylor taking the number four and five berths- Ben Stokes should remain at number six. It is not ideal to have to replace two of your most experienced batsmen at the same time but, after such a dismal few months, Betfair punters will know how important it is for the selectors to make the right decision. England have built much of their recent success on a strong middle-order; they must find the right combination in order to get back to their best.

The fifth issue for England to resolve is Alistair Cook’s opening partner. Michael Carberry was thrown into the lion’s den against Australia and looks unlikely to retain his place. Joe Root and Nick Compton have also failed in recent series’ to nail down the number two slot. Middlesex’ Australian-born opener Sam Robson could be the next man in the frame for England; after an unbeaten century for England Lions against Sri Lanka A last winter and a steady start to this year’s County Championship he could be just the man to make the second opening slot his own.

England meet Sri Lanka in the first test at Lords on 12^th June.

Has Peter Moores has learned from the past?

Has England’s new coach Peter Moores learned from the past sufficiently to take England back to somewhere close to the top of the world game?

Only time will tell of course – but it may well be that England can follow the example set by Australia after their dramatic lull in form and subsequent resurgence – under Peter Moores’ leadership.

Anyone who’s been through the mill in the way Peter Moores has will undoubtedly learn from previous mistakes. Australia demonstrated just how quickly things can be turned round at international level with the right man at the helm.

The 51-year-old Moores first became England coach back in 2007 but was sackedjust two years later partly due to the fact that he had a very public falling out with Kevin Pietersen - who also resigned from the captaincy role.

It’s also fair to say that Moores' management style didn’t fit well with other senior players including Kevin Pietersen's predecessor as captain - Michael Vaughan.

Now it looks like a case of any port in a stormfollowing England’s disastrous 5-0 Ashes defeat in Australia – followed by an equally awful World Twenty20 campaign. This saw a new low as England lost to Holland – so it looks like this is the ideal time for Moores to take back the helm on the basis that the only way is up.

As things stand, England are only slight favourites with the Betfair exchange to beat Sri Lanka in the forthcoming T20 matches. This will be followed by the Test series against India this summer.

Consistent India lost the World T20 finals to inconsistent ICC tournament finalist Sri Lanka

Remember what Darren Sammy the West Indian skipper said a few days back, after losing the semi-finals to Sri Lanka. He had said “We are a praying team, we know god normally answers our prayers but I guess the almighty wants them (Sanga and Mahela) to leave on a high”. That is exactly what happened last night. Totally out of form Sangakkara and Jayawardene helped Sri Lanka won their first ICC World T20 trophy. Both of them were playing their final T20 international match yesterday. This is the first time Sri Lanka won an ICC event after appearing five finals post 1996.

Man in form and man of the tournament Virat Kohli yet again played a brilliant innings of 77 runs from just 58 balls. Some brilliant overs towards the end of the Indian innings by the Sri Lankan bowlers helped India to restrict only for a total score of 130 runs. Unlike Virat, Yuvraj Singh the hero of the 2007 World T20 and 2011 ODI World Cup had one of the worst day in the office. Yuvraj scored only 11 runs off 21 balls.

Chasing 131, Sri Lanka did not had a great start to their innings. But thanks to a brilliant performance by man of the match Kumar Sangakkara (who scored unbeaten 51 runs off 35 balls) Sri Lanka chased the target quite comfortably with 6 wickets in hand and 14 balls to spare.

Now the match is over and everyone who followed the match last night still thinking if the decision to send Yuvraj Singh instead of in form Suresh Raina or skipper Dhoni himself was a good one or not. Because of Yuvraj’s innings India totally lost control of the game and never able to bounce back despite a decent start. And to validate that we tried our hands at the Zip Factor. Recognising Sports as an Industry key to sports development in India: CII-KPMG Report

On February 25, 2014 KPMG under the aegis of CII released a report titled “Business of Sports - Shaping a Successful Innings for the Indian Sports Industry”. The report identifies key issues in the sports ecosystem and explores measures to develop a private-investment led sporting scenario in the country – one that helps imbibe a sporting culture and achieve the country’s vision of excellence in sports.

The reports states that resource scarcity in India makes it difficult for the Government to attain the above objectives and calls for collaborative efforts of both the Government and private sector towards strengthening the sports ecosystem. Long term sustainability of commercial ventures in the Indian sports sector would require sustained audience interest driven by India’s winning performances at international sporting events.

Sports not only boost the youth and instil pride among citizens, but also facilitate social and economic development of a nation. Sports sector is seen to have a significant socio-economic impact worldwide contributing to 1-5% of national GDP. This can be achieved by building a sporting culture in the country.
However, in India sports is not recognised as an industry yet, limiting corporate investments except in cricket and a few other leagues. Being home to various upcoming leagues and the youngest population in the world, India’s sports sector offers tremendous growth potential.

Ajit M Sharan, Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports released the CII - KPMG report at the Scorecard 2014, CII’s National conference on Sports.

Earlier Atul Singh, Chairman, CII National Committee on Sports and Group President (Asia), The Coca Cola Company, highlighted Industry’s role of “going beyond Sponsorships and CSR activity and the need for a policy shift to recognize Sports as an industry”. He said, “this would help actualize the India@75 vision for broad-basing sports in India, and promote excellence in Sports, by promoting infrastructure development, providing technical support for athletes, as well as grooming talented sportspersons”. “Corporate funding in sports may be the answer to ignite sports development in India. The gestation period for realizing return on such investments may be long, but global experience shows us that it could be potentially rewarding’, added Jaideep Ghosh, Partner, KPMG in India Global sports industry is estimated to be worth around US$ 600 billion and growing at a rate higher than national gross domestic product rates around the world. While direct sports revenues are dominated by gate collections, sponsorships, media rights, the sports sector may comprise several segments such as sports tourism, sporting equipment manufacturing and retail, sports apparel, recreational sports, high school and college athletics, as well as associated businesses such as sports marketing, sports medicine, venues & infrastructure, hospitality and merchandising.

Aussies look to further England punishment

Glenn Maxwell has admitted Australia are looking to inflict another 5-0 series defeat on England in the ODI series against the beleaguered tourists. After reclaiming the Ashes following a sensational 5-0 series whitewash, Australia are now looking to continue their winning start to the one-day games and further Alastair Cook’s side’s punishment. Paddy Power have Australia as 15/8 to beat England 5-0.

The Aussies romped to a six-wicket victory in the first of five ODIs in Melbourne, making light work of an England side that Maxwell believes looked “drained” during their latest defeat during this tour. A string of fielding errors cost England dear in their bid to defend 269-7.

A record 163-run opening partnership between Aaron Finch and David Warner - who were both dropped early in their innings’ - set Australia on their way to win with 26 deliveries remaining. And the hosts are looking to continue their recent dominance against the English during the rest of the one-day games.

Not many cricket betting fans would have predicted England going 10-0 on this tour, but that result now looks a genuine possibility unless the tourists can pull something out of the bag and start producing on the pitch. There were at least some positives for England to take from the opening ODI defeat, but a failure from the top-order and more worrying mistakes in the field continued the trend set by the Test side earlier in the tour.

"I think we can (win 5-0). The way the side is at the moment, and the confidence around the group, and the England team yesterday looked a little bit drained, a bit tired - I think they're still carrying effects from the Ashes,” said Maxwell.

Mitchell Johnson has made it clear Australia will be expecting a response from England following the hosts’ comprehensive 381-run victory to win the opening Ashes series in Brisbane. Despite beginning this Ashes series as clear underdogs with Betfair, Australia made light work of England’s batting order to take a 1-0 lead in the series, with Johnson playing a key role with both bat and ball at the Gabba in an extremely promising display.

The left-arm paceman claimed nine wickets in the match as the hosts crushed England with a day to spare, knocking a timely 64 with the bat in the first innings when the Aussies were against the ropes to help his side out of trouble. But it was Johnson’s aggressive (and accurate) bowling which really saw the 32-year old step up to the plate and show how important he might be in this series for Australia.

"I couldn't have asked for a better start. But all the guys had big performances throughout this Test match. We wanted to go 1-0 up here in 'Brissy'. We know last time what happened, so it's a very nice start. But that's all it is.”

“There's a long way to go and we know that England are going to come back hard,” admitted Johnson.

While the Barmy Army wasted little time in their attempts to get to Johnson like they have managed in the past, the bowler looked a different animal as he went about the English batsmen. Johnson’s performance is one of a number of reasons why the Ashes odds now have the Aussies are strong favourites with Betfair to go on and win this series. But while Johnson has enjoyed a strong start to this Ashes series, the question will be whether or not he can maintain it over the course of five Test matches.

Pietersen Plans for Three More Years

England’s star batsman, Kevin Pietersen, has quashed reports from cricket betting sites suggesting he will retire from the game at the end of the forthcoming Ashes series in Australia.

The 33-year-old has struggled with a knee injury this year, which forced him to miss the Champions Trophy and the home series against New Zealand; although, he recovered in time to help England retain The Ashes.

Pietersen, who has scored 7,887 runs in 99 Tests for England, is keen to play Test cricket for three more years and revealed he wants to play for his country until at least the 2015-16 tour of South Africa.

"As long as the body goes well, I'm good for it," he said. "I had coffee with [England one-day coach] Ashley Giles and said to him - ‘I want to be with you in 2015.’"

Pietersen has starred in four Ashes series victories and played a key role when England won the World Twenty20 tournament in 2010. He says he hopes to be a part of the 2015 World Cup squad and play in another home Ashes series.

Meanwhile, England will give wicket keeper, Matt Prior, who has played in 57 consecutive Tests, as long as possible to recover from a torn calf muscle.

Prior, a popular figure with fans who bet on cricket, has admitted that he is 'touch and go' to be fit for the first Ashes Test against Australia, which is set to get underway in Brisbane.

Prior, who averaged just 19 against the Baggy Greens in England earlier this year, will be replaced behind the stumps by Yorkshireman, Jonny Bairstow if he fails to recover in time for the Gabba opener.

He said: "I’ll know if I’m going to make it 24 hours before the match starts. I’ll have to be able to train at 100 per cent on Wednesday to realistically have any chance of playing."

All my friends, (pause) settle down, let me talk. I would like to thank people who have played an important role in my life. For the first time, I'm carrying a list so that I don't forget them. The most important person in my life, I miss him, since 1999, my father. Without his guidance, I don't think I would be standing in front of you. He told me, "chase your dreams and don't find shortcuts." He told me to be a very good human being. Whenever I've done something special, when I raised my bat, it was for my father.

My mother, I don't know how she managed such a naughty child like me. She took care of me. She started praying for me before I started playing cricket. Her prayers are blessings and a big thank you for all her sacrifices.

I can't forget my uncle and aunt who I stayed with during my school day. My aunt fed me when I was tired after playing so that I could be stronger and play harder the next day. My elder brother Nitin always encouraged me. My sister Savita was the one who gifted me my first cricket bat, it was a Kashmir Willow.

Ajit, my brother, what can I say about him. He sacrificed his career for me to pursue my cricket. He took me to my coach Ramakant Achrekar and that changed my life. Even last night, he called me and we spoke about my dismissal. We still discuss technique. We have argued over it and had it not been for all that, I would have been a lesser cricketer.

The most beautiful thing happened to me in 1990, when I met my wife. When we decided to start a family, Anjali told me to continue my career with cricket and said that she would take up the responsibility of the family. Thanks for bearing with me, my frustration which I have thrown. You are the best partnership I've had in my life.

Then, the two precious diamonds of my life, Sarah and Arjun. They've already grown up. I wanted to spend so much time with them on special occasions like birthdays, annual days, going on holidays, I've missed out on all of them. Thanks for understanding me, you are so special to me, you cannot imagine. These 14 and 16 years, I couldn't spend enough time with you, but the next many years are all for you.

My inlaws, Anand and Annabel Mehta the most important think they did was to allow me to marry their daughter. All my friends, during my childhood have helped me a lot, whenever I asked them to bowl to me, they would leave their work. My friends have woken up at 3 o'clock in the morning to drive with me during times of injury when I thought my career was over.

The turning point of my career was when my brother took me to my coach, Achrekar Sir. I was extremely happy to see him in the stands, normally he watches on TV. Sir would take me all overMumbai on his scooter to play two matches and get match practice. He has never told me 'well played' and maybe now he can say that as there is no more cricket in my life.

My cricket started at the Wankhede for Mumbai. Thank you very much for taking care of me. BCCI was fantastic, right from my debut, believing in my ability, selecting me at the age of 16, the faith they put in me, thank you. You were with me when I was injured and took good care of me so that I could come back and play.

Thanks so much to all the cricketers I've watched on TV although I couldn't play with them. Dravid, Sourav, Laxman and all of them here, Anil is not here, you are like my family away from home. I know when MS Dhoni presented my 200th Test cap on day 1, in the morning, I had a special message for the team. We are special and should be proud to be part of this Indian team. I believe, we are the lucky ones chosen by the almighty to serve the sport. I have full faith in you that you will continue to serve the nation and brings all the laurels to our country.

I'd be failing if I don't thank all the doctors and the physios without whose special efforts on this body. They have come from Chennai and far to tend to me and have kept me in good shape.

My good friend, Mark Mascarenhas, my first manager. He loved cricket, loved Indian cricket and gave me all the space and took care of all the promotions and sponsors. Thank you, Mark, I miss you.

CII's Sports Management Capacity Building Workshop in Delhi & Mumbai

Sports management has become a high profile career option in India and abroad. One of the countries where it has reached the next stage as an evolving profession is Australia, who has led the way by integrating sports management in university business degrees. Against this backdrop, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with Australian Trade Commission and Deakin University, Australia is organizing a workshop on Sports Management Capacity Building in New Delhi and Mumbai. The sports management industry is a growing arena in India with more and more professionals needed to run different sports, be it the federations, clubs, franchises, sports management companies and more. The first of the two events will be held on Wednesday, April 10 at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi; while the second on Friday, April 12 at the Hyatt Regency in Mumbai. Topics on both days, in both cities will be Overview of Sports Industry in India, Skills Gap in Indian Sports Industry – What is missing for the industry to be successful?, Sport Management in India – Linking Education to industry requirement, Review of existing Sport Management Academic Programs in India, The Deakin Experience and a closing session. But there will be a mainly different set of speakers for the CII's Sports Management Capacity Building Workshop in New Delhi and Mumbai.

Mumbai Indian led by Harbhajan singh opened the IPL 5 with a winning streak, Chennai super king the defending champion fell on back with a low score total, batting second chasing 112 was not a uphill task for Mumbai Indian, especially if you have experts of 20-20 format any score seems easy to chase. RE Levi who is known for his quick style batting made debut half century in DLF IPL 5, sachin tendulkar who was looking good, unfortunately got retired hurt but as the total was not so big easily chased by Mumbai Indians.

Ishant's sensational spell sends Kochi crashing

Ishant Sharma bulldozed the Kochi Tuskers' batting line-up in a sensational five-wicket spell as Deccan Chargers spanked the hosts by 55 runs in their Indian Premier League match in Kochi on Wednesday.

Before Ishant's fiery spell, Chargers skipper Kumar Sangakkara scored a defying 65 off 47 balls under pressure to help the Chargers post a modest 129 for seven after being asked to bat at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium. The Chargers then dismissed the hosts for 74 in 16.3 overs, Ishant producing one of the most memorable fast bowling spells in the history of the T20 league and finishing with incredible figures of 3-0-12-5.

Chargers badly needed a victory, having lost four of the six matches before and placed at the bottom of the points table. Now they have jumped to sixth place.

The track had helped the Kochi pacers as well earlier, but Ishant extracted the maximum out of the juicy pitch as he hit the deck hard. It was the third-best performance by a bowler in the history of tournament. Rajasthan Royals' Sohail Tanvir had recorded best figures in the inaugural edition in 2008 when he took six four 16 against Chennai.

Kochi had not scored a single run off the bat and lost four batsmen when they began their chase. Ishant was responsible for the mayhem as he ripped apart the rival top order, striking thrice in his first over. He dismissed Parthiv Patel (0), Raiphi Gomez (0) and Brad Hodge (0). Dale Steyn (3/16) had dismissed the dangerous Brendon McCullum (0) in the first over and the two runs that Kochi managed on the scoreboard at that time came through a leg-bye and wide.

Ishant sent shock waves in the rival camp when he returned to bowl his second over and trapped Kedar Jadhav (0) off the first ball and had Mahela Jayawardene (4) caught behind with the last. The scorecard read a horrible 11 for six in four overs. Ravindra Jadeja (23) and Thisara Perera (22) though showed nerves of steel as they responded to the tough situation with a gritty 36-run stand for the seventh wicket.

It could not help them avert defeat but saved them from suffering the ignominy of recording the lowest total in the IPL history, which is 58 by Rajasthan Royals, against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2009.

Earlier, Sangakkara came up with a terrific 65-run knock after being bowled off a no-ball to lead Deccan Chargers to a modest total.

Put in to bat after Kochi won the toss, Deccan Chargers were in a spot of bother at 20 for three in 5.2 overs, but Sangakkara, in the company of Cameron White (31), rescued the team from the precarious position with a defying 90-run stand for the fourth wicket. Sangakkara, when batting at the individual score of five, was bowled by S Sreesanth in the fourth over of the innings, but never looked back after getting the reprieve and led the Chargers' amazing recovery. His superb knock, under pressure, came off 47 balls and contained 10 boundaries, while White's 34-ball innings was studded with two fours and a six. R Vinay Kumar (3/25) dismissed both Sangakkara and White with the last two balls of his final over, the 17th of the innings, to conclude his spell on a superb note. White holed out to Jayawardene at deep mid-wicket while Sangakkara edged the next delivery to stumper Parthiv Patel. The most productive session for the Chargers was between over number 11 and 15 when they scored 53 runs, while the last five overs fetched 39 runs. Earlier, with a juicy wicket to bowl on, Kochi pacer RP Singh (2/21) gave the hosts a dream start, dismissing both the openers -- Sunny Sohal (1) and Shikhar Dhawan (4) -- in successive overs.

The left-arm pacer trapped Sohal with the last ball of the opening over and then had Dhawan caught by Raiphi Gomez off the second ball of his second over.

However, he was unlucky to not have the wicket of Bharat Chipli, who drove straight to Brendon McCullum at extra cover, but the Kiwi player failed to latch on to the chance. Sreesanth then bowled Sangakkara with a gem of a delivery, but that turned out to be a no-ball. The visitors finally ran out of luck as R Vinay Kumar had Chipli (4) caught by Sreesanth at mid-off.

The Kochi pace trio exploited the lively track, which offered bounce and seam, well as they gave away just 20 runs in the first six overs, conceding just one boundary. The Chargers needed Sangakkara to stay at the crease as long as possible and build a partnership along with White and the duo did not disappoint their teammates.

At half-way stage, they were 37 for three but gradually Sangakkara and White got into the groove and started punishing the bad balls. Only two boundaries were scored in the first 10 overs but then four were hit in two successive overs, three coming off the bat of Lankan batsman. White then broke the shackles by dispatching Ravindra Jadeja for a huge six over square leg and Sangakkara was just getting better and better as he smashed his compatriot Thisara Perera for a couple of boundaries. The former Lankan skipper raised his fifty with a sweep boundary off Jadeja and took the team past 100-run mark before being dismissed by Vinay Kumar.
