...will you be destroyed along with it?

So some day we will all wake up to read in our daily newspaper (if we still have them) that the internet has finally managed to destroy the world. How you may be wondering? Well, there are many ways which take place right in front of us and there is only a matter of time before it drive everyone from sanity to insanity.

1. Social Networking

In the world of the internets every seems to use Facebook, MySpace, StumbleUpon, Twitter etc…. Theres in fact so many of these websites it is a mystery why peoples brains haven’t exploded yet due to having to remember 500 different websites, let alone their usernames and passwords for these sites.

How Can It Destroy The World?
And thus we have the Facebook status bar, or the Tweet as it is referred to on Twitter. While it’s true that many people humiliate themselves on these sites by saying irrelevant things such as:

“Bob is in a bar, looking at Susan. But she is looking at Pablo. Bob is married. Pablo is not.” (Source)

The internet can take this an make it much worse than this. Presenting the future. Not only will you still be able to make a fool of yourself in front of your friends all over the internet, but you will eventually be able to do it in real-time. Then you’ll be thinking “wait I never intended to tweet than” and that will be tweeted too making you look like the grandma whose never used a computer before.

2. MMOs Destroy The World

While the scenario that is described on that page is an event with a high plausibly should such an event occur, like climate change there are far more issues the can destroy the world in the present than in the future.

How Can It Destroy The World?
Presenting the ABC Keyboard:

After all who wants to relearn the alphabet to learn to use a QWERTY keyboard? Not only will the world be typing slower but if you look carefully there are keys that will automatically type out LOL and CYA with the push of a button. And to think that we as humans can find ways to out do our own laziness.

3. Presenting Anonymous

No, we are not here to condone anonymity for there are many of use who feel that it can be used as a force for good. Thus, allowing the human race to purge itself from its various sinful cults of greed and power (aka. Scientology). However, don’t get your hopes up because due to the anonymous nature of anonymity we can also act in secret.

How Can It Destroy The World?
While there are many noble Anonymous Groups, such as the one trying to bring down the Scientological menace. Anonymity can still be used for evil purposes. Thus, presenting the internet scam where a person asks you for millions of dollars in exchange for a service. Only later do you realise that you’ve been scammed. It seems the L. Ron Hubbard isn’t the only person who can be a successful con-artist.

4. Internet and DRM

Can you imagine if the public library was invented today, how much complaints literary publishers would have about their works being loaned out for free? This of course happens with digital books, but look on the bright side! At least publishers are finally making back their money.

How Can It Destroy The World?
So for now libraries are still a safe haven for those who love to read books with no additional costs to their yearly taxes. Sadly, thanks to internet companies like Amazon, books are now being sold digitally, and there is less of a need for an actual book store. So its not only illegal immigrants taking aways the jobs of the working class but its also the internet. Its only a matter of time before the police knock down you door to remove the book you bought from your property.

Link Building 101

By Joseph Parish

I would be hard pressed to provide a complete course in link building in such a short amount of space such as this, however I would like to present a few basic fundamentals to you in order to get you started down the SEO road.

We have all heard about the importance that both Yahoo and Google search engines place on links when determining site rankings. One can think of links as individual votes and the more of these links that you have the higher you end up in the rankings.

When venturing around the net we find several types of links. The first type being the “internal link”. This link is nothing more then a link on the same site to another page of the site. An “external link” on the other hand will navigate you from one website to another. When your site is being linked in this manner to another it is known as a “backlink”.

With this under our belt we can now progress to the four types of links involved in SEO work.

The first one is a URL link. This type of link is nothing more then a link to another site.

The most common type of link found on the net is the “Text Link”. These are also referred to as static links and are nothing more then a word or phrase that when clicked on will take you to another site.

The third type of link is the “Image Links”. Just as they say these are links where one clicks on the image to be transported to another site.

Lastly we come to the “Dynamic Links”. These links are usually constructed in a particular programming language such as JavaScript. Although these types will also take you to another website they may also have other functions as well.

As an SEO professional you should be able to easily recognize each of the above stated links.

Links provide the proper navigation needed by both human visitors as well as search engine spiders to allow either a visit or to index the page. When search engines index your page they gather various bits of information concerning your website and list it within the confines of the search engine database. This allows others to request information from the search page and in return receive links to your site.

You must understand how a search engine functions to be able to manipulate them. When a search engine indexes your site it will follow the links you have listed to travel from one page to another. Search engines do not follow “dynamic links” and as a courtesy to the website it does not follow the html links which are coded as “do not follow”.

These “do not follow” tags are usually embedded within the sites meta tags. The meta tags are bits of information which are intended solely for the search spiders and not for human visitors. To view meta tags select “view source” in your browser.

There are several types of links that you would want to get. These are “One-way links” and “Reciprocal Links”. A one way link is just what it indicates. It is a link to you but no return link is required whereas the Reciprocal link is one where you link back to the site that provided you with a link. To a search engine the one way links are the more valuable ones, however, both links have their own value based on the relevance towards your site, the text associated with the link, the authority of the website which is linking to you, etc.

An important point to be brought up here is that you can have links which have no value what so ever to the search engines but still manages to delivers hundreds or possibly thousands of visitors to your site.

In short, the more sites which link to you the better you will fair with the search engines. Building links can be very time consuming but well worth the effort. This is all we have time for now but it provides you with a starting point to center your efforts on. Good luck.

Five Bad Ways to Ask for a Link

By Joseph Parish

Anyone familiar with SEO principles quickly realizes how valuable link backs are, however, in the same sense one must fully understand that there are certain mistakes that should never be made when requesting them.

1. The number one mistake which I continually see from the many requests I receive is that the link back fails to match the subject content of my site. I would be doing my readers a grave injustice if I linked to a site with a different type of category then what my sites major concern was. As an example, If I have a survival site, I certainly would not feel comfortable linking to a website which contains adult centered material. As an SEO professional do your homework before making your request. Keep the topics relevant to the site.

2. Always address the request to a person. As an example if I receive a request for a link back addressed to webmaster my first thoughts are that this person has mass produced this email and sent it to a considerable number of people. When requesting links keep it personal and address the email appropriately.

3. Avoid being picky and don’t force a desired anchor down my throat. Don’t demand a front page link. Let’s face it you are asking me for something for free therefore do not be so demanding. If you want me to provide a link to your site don’t dictate to me the text to be employed for I have a right to word it as I see fit. On the other hand, if you are willing to pay for this link then by all means feel free to specify a particular page or location as well as how you want it to appear in the listing.

4. Never include trite statements such as “Please don’t let me down!” or similar expression. When I see one of these lines in an email I start to roll on the floor from laughter. In cases such as these I deliberately try to let the person down with a large “No thank you – I am not interested” type of reply.

5. Prior to sending your email out at least run a spell checker over it. Spelling and grammatical errors tend to detract greatly from the overall effect of your message. These appear very unprofessional and let’s face it why would I want to send my visitors to a website that would reflect unfavorably on me. Proofread your work several times before you click on that send button as it will save both of us from an embarrassing situation.

When I receive requests containing errors such as those above my first thoughts are that this person should never be involved in the SEO business in the first place. It is obvious that he does not know the first thing about building back links to a site.

Would I give people who commit these mistakes a link from my site? No, I would not. So if you want a link beware of making certain mistakes when you request this service from a webmaster of a site. Treat the person with respect, be polite and above all keep your attitude professional. Isn’t that exactly how you would want to be treated?

Does DMOZ Matter?

By Joseph Parish

There’s one search engine that has been around for a good many years now but few people are even aware that it exists. This search engine is the open directory project known as DMOZ.org. Often times this search engine is referred to as the mother of all search directories.

Over the recent years the DMOZ directory has dropped drastically in popularity and can usually be found in a negative light by many of the webmasters who express criticism at the difficulty of getting included in the listings. The original intent for DMOZ was to establish a directory for the people and one which is created by the people. It was suppose to be the answer to the closed Yahoo directory.

Many of the DMOZ users have become critical of the “for the people” philosophy and the use of this directory has continually be declining. It is so bad that DMOZ figures show sharp declines in visitors and page views over the last seven years. They have failed to exceed three million visitors in one month since reaching their peek at 15 million in March 2003.

When mention is made of search engines the word Yahoo or Google quickly surface but little is mentioned of DMOZ. A major point that is often overlooked here is that DMOZ was not intended to replacing Yahoo or Google. It was created to compliment them. You can find all sorts of information on the web and the broader the topic is the more useful it is for a researcher using DMOZ.

The largest complaint against DMOZ is not the material that it can provide to the masses but rather from those who are submitting sites for review. The usual claim is that DMOZ fails to provide an effect means of submitting sites. It is not unusual to find that authoritative sites are omitted while those sites containing mediocre content are readily available.

It is generally extremely difficult to get a DMOZ link and this has been a great factor in its decline. In all, the database has a good foundation however more effort needs to be expended in allowing the sites to be listed. If you as an SEO professional can get your website listed on DMOZ by all means do so for hopefully in the future it will bring itself up to par with its competitors.

1) Click onto the page that you wish to promote.

2) Click on ‘’suggest to friends”, which should be located under the profile picture.

2) Copy the following code into your browser window: javascript:elms=document.getElementById(’friends’).getElementsByTagName(’li’);for(var fid in elms){if(typeof elms[fid] === ‘object’){fs.click(elms[fid]);}}

3) Click ”enter”

4) All of your friends will now be added to the list. Click on ‘’send invitations” and they will all get one! This is a very easy way to invite all of your friends to become a fan of your page with hardly any hassle at all.

This trick could be the difference between you having a very unpopular page, and you having the most popular page on facebook. If you invite everyone, and they choose to join, then it comes up on their homepage. If the title is snappy, then their friends might feel as though they would like to join as well, same with their friends etc. It can often go on and on and on like this until certain groups get hundreds of thousands of members!

A niche, is sub-topic within a specified field. Whether this is obscure, or rarified subject matter is of little consequence. Sometimes information on really obscure specialized interests can become quite lucrative. This is where the niche-marketer comes in.

According to Wikipedia, a niche is “a special place within the scheme of things.” Niche marketing is defined as “the process of discovering and serving small but essentially lucrative market sectors and creating custom made products or providers for them.” It’s all to do with discovering your special interest and also the items and services that match.

To begin with, you should realize that your objective in obtaining a specialized niche, is to concentrate your direction and ideas to the most appropriate, concise, and concentrated concept feasible. Your potential audience is everybody on the planet with internet access and an interest for your site’s subject. Your possible information resources, are everything recognized as referring to that topic. Which means you want to be certain to possess sufficient info to, at some point, fill hundreds of pages. Also you will want to tighten your focus enough that, you will be recognized as an expert, as “THE Expert” for information, items for purchase, and/or services pertaining to your particular niche topic.

Concentrate…
Let’s say you’re interested in gardening. You can refine your focus by choosing an gardening style, period in history, particular gardener, subject within the niche (flowers, landscaping, tools, indoor, front yard, garden furniture, and so on.), and/or the life and motivation of famous gardeners through history. Your goal ought to be to select as numerous of these focal points as you can, so that the end result is a very concise subject matter.

Following this, you will definitely want to discover how regularly people are looking for this information, what words they are keying in the search engines like google, and just how numerous the available websites are, with that information. Eventually you will put your concept together and your key phrases, then you can choose your domain name and create meta tags pertaining to your web site.

Keywords have been named as such for a purpose…
Each web page on your web-site should have its own key-words or phrases. They are the words and phrases that individuals will type into a search-engine and discover your site. Perhaps your gardening interest has been narrowed down towards the history of English garden architecture, and represented by the pictures of some particularly famous garden architect. You must discover the best keywords, see what other websites are presently popular, maybe alter your focus until you discover precisely the right level among what’s popular, what’s available, and what’s wide open or missing, for you to personally concentrate on.

Performing in-depth research to begin with, is essential for your success. This is the “hard work” part, but as soon as you have done it, you’ve got the bones or the basis, of everything else you will be creating for your chosen niche. You will have a listing of websites to relate back to for research, article content, backlinks, and so on.

I hope this article has given you an insight into what niches are and where to get them.

Netizens are very much aware of the buzz surrounding Web 3.0. It is a place where both search engines like Google and software “agent” can better read, understand, and process all the data floating around the Internet.

Web 3.0 is a “set of standards that turns the Web into one big database.” In theory, this would help a person with a computer to, for instance, check whether a doctor or dentist is available for the day within a 10-kilometer radius; the search engine or software agent would find it.

For this to happen, this would take a “reannotating” or rewriting of the whole Web so data can be found more easily; others, mostly researchers, think creating better software agents to search for data would be better and less costly.

The term Web 3.0 is not confined to the idea of the Semantic Web, however. Some think of it as becoming a 3D Web – a virtual world you can walk through without leaving your desk. Others see it becoming a Media-Centric Web, where one could use a photo to search for a painting with the exact same image on it (for example, the Mona Lisa).

Finally, there’s also the idea of the Pervasive Web, where the Web would not just be on your PC: it would be in your cellphone, your watch, your home, and even your bathroom mirror.

However it develops, Netizens are certain only of this: it’s coming soon.

Marketing on the internet, involves considerable more than merely slapping up a web-site and expecting traffic to it.
If you follow some of the more prominent strategy hype, you may very well end up doing your site more damage than good.

Some people think that online marketing is the future of marketing, nevertheless there are various web advertising limitations that everybody must contend with. Whilst online marketing is both a great method to reach a large number of individuals and a pretty inexpensive type of advertising, being aware of how it’s limited can help you target your internet marketing strategies better and get you far greater returns.

One of the biggest restrictions about the internet is, people view it similarly as the television—they want to view what they like and practically nothing but that. Just like people tend to get something to eat, or visit the bathroom, throughout advertisements, no one really really wants to listen to, or view, advertisements online. This meanss you’ve got to become almost underhanded within the way you do your marketing.

An additional kind of internet marketing restriction pertains to search engines. The manner in which these types of sites work, is that they rank your site according to how well it seems to equal the user’s question. It’s not an exact formula, however it has to do with what words you have included in your title, meta-data, and in the text on your website itself.

Are you are aware of keywords, SEO or Search Engine Optimization? These are the hottest phrases on the web today, and everyone wishes their website to be optimized. Essentially, SEO is the exercise of using key phrases a certain percentage of times on your site to ensure that search engines will constantly rank it higher.

The limitation right here is that composing website content purely for search engines, means you are not writing for real people visiting your site. In the case of a web page being heavy on key phrases, it just won’t flow naturally and might not be that useful, if even understandable. Today’s readers, are far more savvy to inadequately done “search-engine-only-optimized” sites, and the majority of visitors click off the sites they find too heavily keyword induced.

Many of the internet advertising methods today, depend on obtaining different people to post hyperlinks or pictures that connect with your site – on their sites. This link trade functions pretty well, provided you do not mind getting a part of your site dedicated to hosting reciprocal hyperlinks. These website owners don’t wish to link to you without having you linking back again – fair enough! The problem right here is always that a few hyperlinks or pictures do not appear to bad, however whenever you begin obtaining dozens of them, it can end up making your website appear a bit messy.

Another internet limitation is that sometimes, people simply will not subscribe to your email list. If you were trading from within a shop, you can often say something in addition, or offer the customer much more info about what it is you would like to send them. However, online it can be tough to really push your advertising to prospective clients, as they will rarely want to hang around, before blasting off to the next web-site. Then again, those people who do sign up for your e-mail newsletter online, are generally customers who are already really interested in whatever it is you are offering and will buy from you more than once. These are the vaunted “repeat-customers”.

Such limitations are just a few of the things you may run into with your internet advertising strategies, nevertheless, they could all be mastered with a little industry and ingenuity. Also, remember that the information is still reaching numerous, diverse people, regardless of the marketing strategy limitations.

For those new to the game, it can be easy to be seduced by the phenomenal numbers of email addresses offered by various companies, by and large, these are bogus offerings.

Having decided to start on an email marketing campaign, your next task is to construct an e-mail advertising list – but where does this come from? Many individuals give in to the lure of ‘buying’ e-mail advertising lists. Do not join this herd.

You’ve likely observed the advertisements that offer you millions of email addresses for a relatively low price, well should you be seduced by this idea, you’ll more than likely end up being labelled a ‘spammer’.

Most likely the vast majority of the messages you will be sending will wind up in ‘junk’ email folders, and you’ll get no benefit for your money. A good 70% of the addresses you purchase are, in truth, fake or have been cloned, and the leftover 30% have not asked to receive your message to begin with. There are those that choose to ‘rent’ lists from different submission providers, but this may end up costing anywhere from 20 to 30 cents per email.

What can you do? Make use of the following ideas to get your imagination flowing and build your personal, focused mailing list. Remember, your primary goal should be to deliver email messages to individuals who really wish to receive them.

The most important question is, “where can you find these people?”

Your best bet is to begin with distinct marketing methods and give consideration to your web visitors. Below, you will find a list, of things that will ensure your email advertising list is successful.

1. The Physical Aspect:

– if you operate an actual shop, be certain to request that clients provide you with their email address at the counter. You might also wish to consider sending out surveys by way of the post, or operating extra contests to obtain access to customer contact information.

2. Try Surface Mail Advertising:

– post out leaflets or postcards to all prospective clients. However you style your postcards or fliers, be certain to request that people go to your site and register to get the valued information and relevant messages.

3. Doing it on foot:

– this is a excellent opportunity for students who are on break during the summer. with students knocking on doors, offering info in exchange for email addresses.

4. Your Website:

–- ask for people to sign in to your guestbook, your e-mag., or your ezine that you are providing – offering a free of charge report or e-book, including any competition that you are offering. Be sure to put this opportunity on each page, or post of your web site.

5. Consider Starting an On the internet Competition:

– open contests are a very effective method to obtain email addresses. On competition admittance forms, request email addresses as technique of authorization for contest entry.

6. Consider the use of Telemarketers:

– think about utilizing a telecommerce service or telemarketing agent, to make contact with with your prospective clients. Ask your telemarketers to request email addresses, and provide bonuses or gifts, for having prospects provide their email addresses.

7. Think about Utilizing a Broker:

– request sites that provide brokerage services, with major visitors, to link to your service and provide signing up info. Most broker agents will supply this service for an average of $.10 to $.15 per email sales message.

As you can see there are a number of methods to achieving your goal, whenever you require subscribers for your e-mail marketing campaigns – you do not have to waste money purchasing email marketing lists.

Why Bing bothers me and why you needn’t bother with the search engine Bing.

Okay, maybe hate is a strong word. But I’ve been let down. I saw what is among one of the best TV marketing campaigns of 2009 for Bing, so I expected the product to be amazing. I was sadly mistaken.

First, let me tell you how my Bing experience works.

I type “Chinese restaurant” into the search engine. It gives me a bunch of local restaurants… local if I were living in Kansas City. I do not. I do not know what made the site think I lived in Kansas City. I don’t even live in Missouri.

Fortunately there’s a link to change my location. After I do Bing now lists several Chinese restaurants in my city along with a little map image to show me where they’re located. Not too bad. Except that Yahoo does the exact same thing. And guess what, Google does the same thing (except the local listing and map is further down the page).

Okay, so what else does Bing promise? A search for the things you’re looking for, not weird random things. Bing’s ads claim the search engine is the “Cure for Search Overload Syndrome”.

Watch this commercial and then I’ll explain the basis of my Bing intolerance.

Take the example, Breakfast. A lady in the ad is talking about wanting to find a new place for breakfast, while her friend (playing the part of the other search engines) starts spouting out non-food related items, like the Breakfast Club movie.

So, what actually happens when I type “breakfast” in Bing?

Jimmy Dean website where you can get sausage recipes.

JCPenney website ad – specifically promoting FURNITURE!

Schwan’s website

Wikipedia’s page on breakfast

a few more sites where you can find breakfast recipes

a list of local Bed & Breakfast places

a few more recipe sites

a music site that happens to have breakfast in its title

A Yahoo search for “breakfast” gives me nearly the exact same results, minus the JCPenneys and music suggestions. Google’s search was the best. It only gave me food-related results… AND it gave me a rather long list of local restaurants that serve breakfast.

I’ve surveyed a few friends who’ve also tried Bing once. But only once. They were also underwhelmed and went back to their Google habit.

Lesson to be learned: Don’t promise what you can’t deliver. You can make great marketing to get viewers to your site. But it only takes one bad experience for us to never return.
