Hello wedding friends! As you may know, I rarely get the opportunity to showcase an outdoor wedding, primarily because they’re not common for weather reasons, especially here in central Alberta. So I was thrilled to hear from Jenn of Stark Photography, based out of Hamilton, Ontario. The wedding was held last July at the bride’s parents gorgeous property near London, Ontario and the wedding goes to show that if you have the space, lovely weather (or lucky breaks!) and creativity…outdoor weddings CAN be done beautifully.

From Jenn, the photographer:

Thunder crashed outside my window that morning as I got out of bed and got my gear ready to head out to Stacey & Mark’s wedding. That is, Stacey & Mark’s outdoor wedding. In our e-mails back and forth during the previous week, Stacey wondered out loud why she ever wanted to get married outside in the first place. I wondered how she was holding up. But, as I drove down the winding country roads that led to her parents’ property near London, Ontario, the rain stopped, the clouds parted, and the sun came out to stay. Their wedding was nothing short of perfection. From Stacey’s gorgeous dress to the acres of rolling hills and leafy trees surrounding their venue, to the tropical themed florals and the smiles on the faces of all their guests, I loved being a part of this wedding and couldn’t have asked for a better experience for my first time as the official photographer.

Thanks Jenn! It was such a treat to showcase this wedding.

My name is Melissa and I am a wedding-oh-holic. You know you are obsessed with weddings when you literally visit home decor stores at least once every 2 weeks and when you’re out you can’t help but notice anything that’s part of your “color palette”. I swear, Jason is going to take my credit card from me one day and condemn me to a day without weddings. I spent an entire afternoon last weekend at my favorite store Home Sense and literally wanted to take the entire store home. Immediately as I walked through the store doors, there it was…a table full of green & black stationary objects which were marketed as “office” items. But to me, I could care less what they’re meant for…but instead I fall immediately in love with the color and end up figuring out how I can make it work in the wedding. So…now I’m stuck with the item at home with a couple ideas of my own on how to use it. But I’d love to hear what you suggestions you have!

Options I can think of:
1. Seating Chart. The first box would be labeled “A-L” and the second “M to Z”. The escort cards would be lined up inside and the box would be similar to a library catalogue filing cabinet…
2. One that I think is more realistic….a gift card box. I initially thought about using a suitcase but scrapped the idea when I realized I wanted something worn and vintage (still on the lookout…). But would people understand that they can put their cards inside without stating the obvious tacky signage “thank you for your gift!”. yuck.
3. Just decor…fill the drawers with flowers….or use the box as a stand for something else.
4. Keep it for the home office and be done with it! But oh how I love how the color’s so purrrrrfect for the wedding.

Yes, I am slowly going crazy.

Here’s a select few that you can get some ideas from for your own weddings. They’re GREAT examples of how you can use lights to create the right environment for your party. I would DIE (knock on wood) to have a wedding in the third party (blue lights), with the large staircase and open space & high ceilings.
Essence Party
And of course…OF COURSE, there were the ‘usual’ designers that are the choice of the celebs - Armani Prive (Jennifer Lopez & Anna Seifried), Marchesa (Vera & Sandra Bullock), Oscar de la Renta (Cameron Diaz), Elie Saab… Here’s a couple of trends that I picked up while going through the images. Which was your favorite gown? Mine had to be Maggie Gyllenhaal in the <a href="http://www.weddingobsession.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/maggie-gyllenhaal.jpg"target="new">blue floral gown by Dries Van Noten & Vera’s fushia ruffle number by Marchesa.

I love the masculinity of this color palette with just enough yellow to lighten the decor. For those who find black a bit strong or for those who aren’t allowed to use black due to cultural reasons, navy blue is a fabulous choice to pair with just about any color. I like to think that this yellow is more of a yellow-gold which really lends itself well to gold accents should you choose to incorporate them as well. Gold drop down earrings with a dark navy gemstone would look simply divine next to a simple, white gown. And I will never get over how much I love the yellow dress by J. Mendel. Genius and totally architectural. So modern and just right.

I’m hungry just looking at these little suckers. Hor d’oeurves have been on my mind lately since I realized I set aside an hour for cocktails and didn’t budget for them! We’ve been to weddings where there have been some snacks/fruit for people to munch on, but I’ve also been to those where there were only drinks (open & closed bars). So I guess we’ll see, but in the mean time, I wouldn’t mind if I got to taste more for the wedding ! :] See below for a detailed description for each mouth watering item. Have I made you hungry as well? And for those with opinions on cocktail hour snacks, please let me know!

You know you’ve spent wayyyyyy too much time enjoying ‘all things wedding’ when you recognize dresses while shopping and can pinpoint exactly which wedding you saw the gown in. I decided I was going to shop around the BCBG website to find a cute dress to wear to a friend’s wedding this summer and noticed that the selection of long, white gowns is growing! In particular, there were two dresses that stood out in my mind (below) and show you that if you’re looking for a fairly simple silhouette empire, sheath or conservative a-line) with minimal beading, you don’t have to go to a bridal shop to find THE dress.

In fact, when I visited the “White” bridal shop in Yorkville (Toronto), I had a look at their ‘alternative wedding collections‘ which are usually designers who design for the bride that wants something simple & modern without breaking the bank. Lines that I would recommend if you’re going that route are Nicole Miller & Jenny Yoo which are available across Canada. But we’ll leave that for another post…

Below are a couple other options from BCBG that I came across which would be FABULOUS modern wedding gowns…

Artichokes? When I think about them, I immediately think they probably taste horrible because they resemble brussel sprouts. But little did I know that these large green (and sometimes purple) colored vegetables could be used as a unique accent for a wedding? I’m always on the look-out for new and unique items to incorporate into a wedding and I think artichokes just might be it. To me, they resemble succulents which have been my latest obsession. Check out some of the options below on what they look like in bouquets, centerpieces and even as place card holders. I absolutely how dynamic they look next to florals and the dimension of their many layers.

It’s been a while since I’ve updated about my own wedding…I guess you could say so much has happened since then. After visiting three cupcake shops in Edmonton, we can FINALLY cross this off our list! We are so thrilled to have booked Cake Couture, a relatively new (less than one year) shop who have already made a name for themselves in the city. Annie was someone who completely understood our vision (modern, clean, simple) and she took what jason and I wanted even further than we ever thought possible. Up till the meeting we had decided on cupcakes (half green, half white), each with dark chocolate ’squares’ on top to resemble the invitations. Marble always seemed middle ground for the differences of our guests and ultimately they just had to be ..YUMMY.

Annie actually suggested we go with gray…..yes, gray cupcakes! Well, gray icing to be exact. The gray cupcakes will have the green squares like the ones on my invitations and the green iced cupcakes will have the gray squares.

The cupcakes will be tiered on her lovely square stand (shown below in the photos)…and best of all, the mini cake at the top will be a cube covered in the little squares found again on my invitation. We thought it was pretty ‘meant to be’ because we mentioned we were going to Spain for our honeymoon and it just so happened she and her husband lived in Spain for 5 years.

The clincher was that the cupcakes tasted THE best out of all the ones we’ve tasted. Light and fluffy. I’m not a fan of icing that has a strong vanilla flavour and felt Cake Couture’s cupcakes were ‘just right’.

Here’s a look at some of their work for all you Edmonton brides looking for cakes!
