Years ago I touched on the ‘tradition’ of wedding photographers retaining copyright (and the negatives/files), prompting some discussion across a few other sites.

When it came to planning our own recent wedding, there was no way we were going to pay someone and then have them exclusively own the images of such a personal event. I thought perhaps attitudes had changed throughout the industry by now, but at a wedding fair one photographer actually laughed in my face at the idea that we’d get the files etc.

Canon Inc. and Canon Marketing Japan Inc. today announced the introduction in Japan of the new EOS-1D X digital single-lens reflex (SLR) camera offering a high level of performance to satisfy the demands of professionals in such fields as sports photography, photojournalism and studio photography.

To date, Canon has developed its top-of-the-line digital SLR cameras through the 1Ds series, which delivers exceptionally high image quality, and the 1D series, which achieves superlative high-speed performance. Integrating the strengths of these two series, Canon’s new professional flagship model, the EOS-1D X, brings together the highest levels of image quality and speed performance.

The new Canon EOS-1D X incorporates a newly developed approximately 18.1-megapixel 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor which, in addition to achieving an optimal sensor size and pixel count balance, effectively makes use of Canon’s proprietary semiconductor technologies to ensure low-noise performance. Featuring Dual DIGIC 5+, which comprises two new high-performance DIGIC 5+ image processors—each realizing approximately 17 times the processing power of DIGIC 4—the camera delivers exemplary image quality and speed performance, in addition to data processing power that has been greatly enhanced compared with the EOS-1D Mark IV, released in December 2009. Compared with the EOS-1D Mark IV’s sensitivity range of ISO100–12800, the EOS-1D X offers a range that has been expanded by two steps, to 100–51200,* for outstanding imaging results with reduced noise, even when shooting indoors and other dimly lit settings.

Combining a 100,000-pixel RGB metering sensor and DIGIC 4 processor, the Canon EOS-1D X’s new AE system, the EOS iSA (Intelligent Subject Analysis) System, is capable of determining not only brightness levels, but also a subject’s face and target color, making possible high-precision exposure control. The newly developed AF system incorporates an AF sensor with a total of 61 autofocus points for improved high-precision subject capture. The sensor includes 21 f/5.6 cross-type sensors, 20 f/4.0 cross-type sensors, and 5 f/2.8 dual cross-type sensors. Equipped with 20 f/4.0 AF points, the new camera offers the same level of precision as the EOS-1D Mark IV at f/2.8. Additionally, working in tandem with the new AE system, the camera’s EOS iTR AF (Intelligent Tracking and Recognition Auto Focus) function is capable of tracking a subject’s face or target color to maintain focus on a moving subject.

The Canon EOS-1D X’s new Dual DIGIC 5+ image processors make possible high-speed continuous shooting of up to approximately 12 frames per second with high-precision AE and AF performance. In the ultra-fast continuous shooting mode, the camera realizes a continuous shooting speed of up to approximately 14 frames per second (mirror remains raised during shooting, JPEG images only).

The Canon EOS-1D X delivers high reliability even in harsh shooting conditions. The rugged shutter unit boasts a lifespan of over 400,000 cycles while the camera’s exterior covers and operation panels employ a dust- and moisture-resistant design. Furthermore, the camera features a new dust-removing system incorporating two vibrating elements, a first for the EOS series, improving on the earlier cleaning system.

The new EOS-1D X comes equipped with a Gigabit-Ethernet connection that, when shooting in locations equipped with a wired LAN connection such as large sporting arenas, enables data to be transferred to editing desks quickly and reliably. Inheriting the same basic operating design as previous models, which focused on offering instantaneous operation, such aspects of the new camera as its button and control layout and GUI were reviewed and redesigned, with great attention given to operability when held vertically, during blind-touch operation, and when confirming images.

Featuring advanced video-capture capabilities, the Canon EOS-1D X’s upgraded imaging system and Dual DIGIC 5+ deliver greatly enhanced movie quality. In particular, the camera minimizes the occurrence of color artifacts and moiré, and enables the shooting of low-noise video even in dark conditions.

The Canon EOS-1D X will be available in Japan from late March 2012 at an open price. Canon has set initial production at 7,000 units per month.

How I work
There are several styles of wedding photography. Mine is most commonly described as reportage, photojournalism or documentary.

Weddings shouldn’t be stressful. I won’t boss you around, tell you where to stand – and I certainly won’t make you shout out ‘cheese’.

The result is pictures that are relaxed and natural, capturing the atmosphere of the day.

All pictures are taken with Nikon’s flagship camera, the d3s. I shoot with prime lenses – the 24mm 1.4, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4 – some of the best lenses ever made by Nikon. They allow me to work discretely in low light without using flash.

Well it simply means that I tell the story of your whole day through my images, with no posing, prompting or intervention. My aim is to capture all the personality and emotion of your wedding or civil partnership in a series of natural and candid photographs.
I won’t tell you where to stand, ask you to say ‘cheeeese’, or boss you around. I just want you and your guests to enjoy yourselves without me distracting you from the fun of your big day.

5 tips for creating “vintage” wedding photos

1. Don’t overdo it

By this I mean don’t give every picture from a wedding shoot a retro-touch, not all photos suit this kind of treatment. Transforming every shot for the sake of it can look gimmicky – instead be selective.

2. Recognizing the shots
So how do you select the right shots? Some you’ll just know. A bride’s 50’s frock, VW campers, cup cakes; anything with an inherent touch of vintage clearly lends itself to some nostalgic styling.

Other shots that can zing with a little clever post-production include portraits; people love seeing themselves edited this way. Also shots with lots of warm, natural light transform well, and all the better if you’ve caught any sunbeams or flare. At the other end of the spectrum, if you have a shot that’s on the dark side, some vintage action can brighten it up in instances when levels or curves alone just won’t cut it.

Glitterati Arrive For Monaco Royal Wedding – Prince Albert I & Charlene Wittstock

Sir Roger Moore, an African prince, France’s richest man and a smattering of supermodels will be among the glitterati converging on Monaco today for the highly-anticipated nuptials of Prince Albert II and his bride.

Former South African Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock will be tying the knot with the Prince in a civil union ahead of tomorrow’s religious ceremony.

It is the first wedding of a reigning prince in the tiny Riviera principality since Grace Kelly walked down the aisle with Albert’s late father, Prince Rainier, more than 50 years ago.

The guest list for the two-day festivities was kept tightly under wraps until this week when it was revealed that the former James Bond star would be joining the likes of Naomi Campbell and Karolina Kurkova along with a host of athletes, including swimmers, distance runners, racing car drivers and tennis and rugby players at the palace.

Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld will be leading the fashion pack with Italian couturiers Roberto Cavalli, whose yacht often navigates the waters off the Cote d’Azur, and Giorgio Armani, the man behind Wittstock’s wedding dress.

US soprano Renee Fleming and Bernard Arnault, the chief executive officer of luxury giant LVMH and the wealthiest man in France, were also issued with highly prized invitations.

Though members of the royal houses of Spain and Sweden were widely rumoured to have been among the glamorous guests, their names appeared to be missing from the list.

But His Majesty Leruo Molotlegi of the Kingdom of Bakofeng in South Africa and the former president of El Salvador did make the grade.

Miss Wittstock, who was born in Zimbabwe but moved to neighbouring South Africa as a child, met Prince Albert during a 2000 swimming competition in Monaco.

The athlete, who swam for South Africa at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, then began appearing regularly at social events and moved to Monaco in 2006.

The Prince has been an International Olympic Committee member since 1985 and competed in five Winter Olympics as part of Monaco’s bobsled team.

Today’s civil ceremony and tomorrow’s religious ceremony will be held in the palace, a Renaissance palazzo which has been home to Monaco’s ruling Grimaldi dynasty for centuries.

A multi-course gala dinner by three-time triple Michelin starred chef Alain Ducasse will follow the church nuptials.

For a freelance photographer, building up a following for your photography business on social networks is a great way to get your name out there, interact with potential clients and share your latest work.

But making it work can be tricky, and you want to be sure you’re sending out the right ‘message’ about your work and business. Social networks have exploded in the past few years and at your fingertips lie literally hundreds and thousands of pontential clients, so what are the best ways to harness that power?

“I love social media and it’s allowed me to further my brand in much different ways and create different avenues to access my work. And voice. To say this is important would be an understatement in every capacity. This is not intended to infer there’s a correct way to use social media, but are just few tips you may find helpful…”

The best use of social media is finding ways to share. Your opinion, your knowledge, your perspective. It can be done in 140 characters, or you can use an update to point readers in a specific direction. For example, instead of stating the importance of film in your business with a link to a blog post, why not ask a provoking question like, Is Film Dead? This may result in more conversations as well as you sharing your perspective on the subject.

While there are a myriad of factors that contribute to starting conversations, why not be the type of person to make the first move?
