My Home Office in a Bag

Preparing myself for the inevitable big R and finally calling it quits at work, I equipped myself with a trusty MacBook Pro. Of course, personalizing it to my heart's content not only meant customizing desktop themes. I also had to get a protective casing (yes, an incase hardshell case that has a rubberized and soft-touch feel, oh and yeah, in fuschia please) and a carry-bag. Who knows, if I had to meet up with clients, I need to be able to carry my MacBook anywhere and of course, in style!

At home, since I don't have a permanent table yet, I just work on my lap in bed or on top of the kids' table. Experience has already proven that baby girl can "carry" the laptop from the table and who knows if it crashed on the floor, we just saw her on the floor with it (at least we know it is still working). So, when done working, I can't just leave the MacBook on the bed or table. I keep it inside the carry bag, and slide the carry bag under the bed.

I love my carry bag. It has partitions for the laptop, pens, folders/papers and the wires. I also keep in the bag my sketch notebook (when sketching inspiration hits) and a little red filofax.

Inside the MacBook Pro, I have a browser window open exclusively for catch.com, that's where I keep my notes. It is very handy and the tagging capability helps me quickly sift through my otherwise unorganized little notes. The fact that I can easily sync it to my cellphone for offline viewing makes this set-up definitely a winner. I also have a desktop that exclusively houses my iCal. Of course, iCal syncs with my gmail calendar and Jorte on my cellphone. I keep different calendars - personal, projects, bills and kid's school. For To Do list, I also have a browser window open exclusively for rememberthemilk.com. I haven't synchronized this though for offline viewing on my cellphone.

Even if my big R hasn't pushed through yet, I'm still very much looking forward to "home officing" (I dedicate "homework-ing" for my kids' homework from school). Next item on the wishlist: iPad2 with 3G. Woot! Woot!

Organizing a School Birthday Party

Your little tot has entered pre-school. From time to time, the little tot comes home carrying either a balloon, a bag full of loots, some leftover spaghetti. And then it hits you. Oh yeah, you received a birthday party invitation from tot's schoolmate (Mental note: get that kid a little gift). Some schools allow a little party during snack time to celebrate the child's special day. When it's your child's turn to celebrate his/her birthday, what do you do?

One month before: Decide if you want a school party. Decide on a party date. Discuss a working budget with your spouse. Take into consideration that aside from the school party, your family may still want a separate party (or lunch/dinner) for family and friends. Brainstorm. Have a general idea of what you and your kid want for the school party. Do you need a clown? a host? balloons? Have a tentative list of suppliers.

Three weeks before: Before you actually book your suppliers, ask permission from the school. Call the school, go to the school or at least check the parent/student handbook for any party guidelines the school imposes. Coordinate with the teacher or administrative assistant regarding the number of students and teachers/staff for your headcount. Confirm if your planned activity will be allowed in school. For instance, the school might not allow bringing in of sound systems, or mascots, or animals. Also, make sure your party does not exceed the allocated time so as not to disrupt regular class activities. Usually, parties are allowed during snack time only, so work around a 20-30 minute schedule for it. Go back to your budget and finalize suppliers. Make sure that the food you will serve is kid-friendly. Keep the menu free from possible allergens, such as nuts.

Two weeks before: Fill up any permits or forms needed by the school. Plan to give out invitations for the kids. Prepare giveaways, prizes for games and decorations, if any. Make sure these are safe and age-appropriate.

One week before: Distribute invitation cards to the kids (through the teacher) so that other parents will know and can plan their kid's snack schedule accordingly. Remind the teacher of the party. Order the cake. List down the school and suppliers contact numbers.

One day before: Remind suppliers of their call/delivery time. The snacks/food must be in the school earlier than the children's scheduled snack time to give ample time for preparation or setting up. Make sure batteries are charged up for the cameras and multimedia storage cards (SD, memory stick) have ample space. Don't forget a match or lighter for the birthday candle.

Day itself: Put your child into a good, party mood. Make sure food arrives in school on time. Take lots of photos. Capture the priceless moment that your child takes the spotlight and blows the cake in front of his/her teachers and classmates.

A few years back we were looking for Magallanes Church in Makati City. The taxi driver took us to where it was supposed to be, but we didn't find it. Later, we found out it was renovated. Now, seeing it as we normally pass by the South Luzon Expressway, it now looks very majestic from the outside. We haven't been inside though. A quick web search on Magallanes Church reveals that it is even more majestic on the interior.

Well, if you must decide on only one (and possibly a pair of back up shoes for the reception, wink, wink), make sure you arm yourself with the shoes jargon to help you choose the perfect shoes to complement your bridal gown and make you walk like a princess.

boot - a shoe that covers the entire foot and the lower part of the leg.

d'orsay - a pump with a circular vamp and sides that curve downward sharply, exposing the sides of the foot.

kitten heel - low heel that tapers sharply to narrow base.

loafer - a low leather step-in shoe that has a broad, flat heel.

mule - a shoe or slipper that covers only the front of the foot, leaving back open.

platform shoe - a shoe with a high thick sole.

pumps - low-cut shoe that surrounds the foot, without fastenings.

sandal - a shoe consisting of a sole fastened by straps to the foot.

Beyond Weddings: Getting your child's birth certificate in Makati City

In the following, we describe the process of getting your child's birth certificate in Makati City.

After giving birth, some time before the mother checks out of the hospital, you will be given a form to fill out for the birth certificate.
This form will contain information such as the child's full name, parents' full names, etc., basically, all information that will appear in the birth certificate.
After processing, the hospital staff will show you the typewritten version of the form that you submitted. The mother or the father should verify that all information is correct - spelling, gender, dates, everything! before affixing his/her signature.
A claim stub will be given to you. In Makati Medical Center, allow at least three weeks for processing - i.e., for the hospital to file the certificate to the civil registrar.
On the designated claim date, say three weeks later, proceed to the hospital's Admissions section to claim your copy.
Go to the civil registrar at the city hall to apply for a true copy of the birth certificate. At the Makati City Hall, this would be Window 5 at the 3rd floor of the new city hall building. (The sign on Window 5 only says "Receiving" so if you didn't know where to go, you'll have to play some kind of trial and error guessing game).
Fill up the form for application. (Remember, full name should be that of the child's not the parent's.)
Know the exact number of copies that you need. Each copy is around PHP 120 (rate as of February 2010). You will be given an order form which contains the bill/amount to be paid.
Proceed to Window A to pay the amount.
Go back to Window 5 to get your claim stub. Processing is around 3-5 days.
On the designated claim date, proceed to Window 4 to claim your copy.

To avoid expiration of the Marriage License, apply for the license at any Municipality two months before the wedding. (Note Marriage License is valid only for 120 days only)

The Parish Office will issue the following forms:
1. On the day of the interview, Banns and Permit forms for the Bride asking her Parish Priest to allow her to marry outside her own parish. The Banns should be posted in her parish for three (3) consecutive Sundays.
2. The Banns for the Groom announcing his forthcoming marriage should be posted in his parish for three (3) consecutive Sundays.
The following requirements must be submitted two weeks before the scheduled wedding date:
1. Marriage License
2. Reply letters (Banns and Permit) from the respective parishes of the bride and groom
3. Confirmation Certificates
4. Full names of principal sponsors
5. Settlement of the balance of the wedding fee

NOTE: Failure to complete these requirements will mean cancellation of the wedding.

Regulations:

Failure to attend the Marriage Counseling on the appointed date WITHOUT informing the office ahead of time will result in the CANCELLATION OF THE WEDDING DATE.
Only a nuptial booklet, approved by the National Liturgical Commission can be used in the wedding.
Guest Priest who is invited to solemnize the wedding, must present his “celebret” (i.e. A document that guarantees his good standing in his Archdiocese) and photocopy of the certificate of renewal of registration and authority to solemnize marriage.
Parish clearance is given only to 21 years old and above.
The ceremony will START EXACTLY at the scheduled time.
Guest singers are recommended to take along their own organist or instrumentalists.
For the convenience of all, ring and coin bearers and flower girls should be at least five (5) years old.
The certificate of marriage will be given to the mother of the bride together with the nuptial / unity candles and booklet right after the wedding.
Showering of flowers, rice, confetti, etc. are not allowed inside the church. However, this may be done at the church entrance.
Picture taking is limited to the whole entourage only.
Church personnel and not wedding coordinators will do the arrangements in the parish church.
Proper church decorum is strictly enforced. Ladies (bride, mothers, bridal entourage, sponsors, guests, etc.) are expected to dress properly and decently for church. Ladies wearing dresses with plunging/revealing necklines or backless attires will not be allowed to enter the church. To avoid embarrassing situations, it is the responsibility of the bride and groom to inform their entourage, sponsors, guests, etc. before hand.
A late penalty fee of Php5,000.00 is made as a deposit to ensure punctuality. This is refundable on the condition that the wedding ceremony starts on the scheduled time. This means that the bridal entourage arrives earlier than the scheduled time for the wedding. The church clock at the entrance determines the time.

We've seen lots of wedding how-to sites, ranging from how to choose your wedding motif to how to seat your guests. That is, if you're on the to-be-wed side. What if you're on the guest side? Are there any guidelines for you too?

One basic information you should know as a guest is this: what is your classification? Are you on the side of the groom or the bride? Are you a relative, friend or entourage? Knowing this basic information can help make the pictorials in the church go faster and more fluidly. Of course, getting up and going to the altar when your batch is being called for pictorials as fast as possible will also be appreciated by the couple, the church staff, the photographers and other guests as well. Know that some churches impose a cut-off time for photo-ops and that if guests take their own sweet time (and can't classify themselves) in getting up for the pictorials, there may never be enough time for other groups' pictures to be taken (not to mention, late commencement of the reception).

Know the dress code. Some invitations indicate this, and should not be disregarded. The fact that the couple dedicated some precious space on the invites to state the dress code means it is important to them. Be aware also of the couple's sensitivity with regards to color. To some, black is the color of death, and so wearing a little black dress, classy though it may be on some occasions, could be offensive (or traumatizing) to the couple.

Ask for bridal registry. This not only saves you time in picking out the perfect gift, but will also lessen the couple's chances of getting multiple copies of the same item. When in doubt, cash always works. ;-)

RSVP. The couple would like to ensure that all their guests will be properly seated and amply fed. Thus, the need for guests to confirm their attendance as early as possible.

You're searching the web for wedding ideas then you just suddenly found yourself registering for a bridal mailing list. You sit back and relax for now. The next day, you check your inbox and a thousand or so emails greet you - excited brides discussing their wedding worries and praises, searching for suppliers, ranting or deciding which color could be the best accent for a magenta gown. You read a few mails. And then a dozen. And maybe a couple more. A couple of hours later (or earlier if delayed reaction didn't hit you), you stop reading. What the hell are these acronyms?

B2B - bride to be; that semi-hysterical person almost resembling the looks of a girl (when not in her usual monster/bridezilla image) who thinks the whole wide world (and mostly unwanted future in-laws or not-so-close friends, but can also include catering account executives) is about to sabotage the best five hours of her life

H2B - husband to be; that cool guy who's oblivious to B2B's worries and who thinks he can just appear at the altar come his wedding day

MIL - mother-in-law; could come in different forms - domineering and controls anything and everything from the guest list to the number of roses on the reception table, or could be peaceful, sweet and supportive

FIL - father-in-law; another cool guy

MOB - mother of the bride; could also come in different forms, see MIL

FOB - father of the bride; could be another cool guy or one that's trying his best to face the reality that his little girl is finally getting married (sniff)

MOH - maid of honor or matron of honor; usually, the bride's favorite sister or cousin or best friend

BM - best man; H2B's best bro, best bud or if the B2B is powerful enough, this could be any man of HER choice

FG - the cute and cuddly flower girls

PS - principal sponsors; depending on the couple, this could range from two to two dozens

Nowadays, wedding preparations can be as easy as launching your browser and click, click, click. Well, it isn't really as easy as it sounds, but a lot of trips to the caterer and other suppliers can be minimized when the internet is used as a wedding preparation tool.

Ask caterers/hotels to send you their packages/menu through email so you won't have to personally go to their office. Thus, you can compare and contrast their packages right at the comfort of your desktop. Don't miss the taste test though!
Surf wedding blogs. Blogging is a venue for brides to narrate their experiences, usually from the time of engagement until their big day. Follow their adventures or just surf for ideas. Have a pen and paper handy, as these wedding blogs personally written by the brides themselves are usually full of useful tips based on true-to-life experience.
Even better, create your own wedding blog. It can serve as your own journal and online announcement for your entourage. Years into the wedding, it would be nice to reminisce about your wedding preparations (chuckle at how OC you were with the table set-up).
Browse photo/video suppliers' online portfolio. Have a glimpse of their output and see for your self if the supplier is worth investing your memories in. Prepare to be inspired and moved. Have dear old Kleenex ready, most of them can easily activate the tear glands.
Utilize online bridal registries (or even some shop-based bridal registries that offer online monitoring), if you are planning to have a registry. This will give your guests ample time to choose your gifts and at their own convenient time too, minus the all the hassles.
Browse the online catalogs of the thousands of wedding suppliers, especially gowns, favors, rings. This is especially helpful if you are clueless to all of these wedding items (like this writer was).

Securing an NSO-certified Marriage Certificate via NSO Helpline Plus

After all the wedding preparation stress and honeymoon sweetness, it's time to do the paperwork. Get the documentation straight, change your name and civil status officially. One of the most important documents you will need is a National Statistics Office (NSO)-certified Marriage Certificate.

You will need:
- a copy of your marriage certificate from the city hall, complete with the date it was filed in the civil registrar and the reference number
- an internet connection if you want to request online via http://www.e-census.com.ph, in which case you will need an Internet Explorer browser
- or a few minutes of landline call time to call (632)737-1111 if you want to request through phone
- PHP 300 per copy of the Marriage Certificate
- a few minutes to go to the nearest Metrobank branch to pay the above fee
- pen and paper

Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, nationwide, the NSO Helpline Plus makes it accessible for newly-married Filipinos to get their NSO-certified Marriage certificates without the hassle. Call the NSO Helpline Plus hotline at 737-1111 to talk to a call center operator. Provide the necessary information - most important of which are the date the certificate was filed at the civil registrar and the reference number. Have a pen and paper ready to take down the reference number that the friendly operator will give you. You need to write that reference number to the Metrobank green payment slip when you pay.

So yeah, after the call, head on to the nearest Metrobank and pay the fee (PHP300 per copy of the Marriage Certificate regardless of destination).

Upon receipt of payment confirmation from Metrobank, your application will be processed at NSO. Wait for about 8-10 working days and a 2go courier will deliver the document right at your doorstep.

How to choose wedding pictures for your album

It's been a wonderful wedding and you're in cloud nine. Weeks later, family members and in-laws start to pester you with inquiries regarding your wedding album. They want to see it, and they want to see it now.

The pictures are still with our photographer, was your convenient excuse. Then you make a mental note to ask your photographer about it. Days later, with hands trembling with excitement, you load the DVD of your wedding pictures onto your DVD drive and start to reminisce about the biggest day of your lives. You put off the stress of surfing through 2600+ shots to choose the 100-150 pictures for your album. Another day... another day...

Choosing the best 150 shots for your wedding album is clearly a very daunting task. Here are just a few reasons:

You get 6 almost identical shots of each of your bridal accessories. Now which one has the best lighting effects?
You have 2 shots which will you choose?
1. one of your guests has his/her eyes closed, everyone else's pose is nice
2. everyone else's eyes are open, except the bride's
Easy choice is the first one, but you still feel some guilt. hehehe.
Because the shots came from 2 cameras, pictures are not in order. This means comparing pictures 728, 729, 730 and 807, 808 and oh, 820.

Postponing this task for months and being pestered for the album by relatives every so often, I did my first attempt -- cycle through the pictures and note the filenames and even enter a short description of the photo (i.e., happy bride with gown). A spreadsheet and the trusty photo viewer were all I needed for this task.

Drawbacks

yes, I always end up looking at all 2600 photos, switch to reminiscing mode, get teary-eyed and at the end of the day, my list is still empty
after a few months of doing this method, I looked at my list. I finally had 114 of the best pictures on my list! Unfortunately, the wedding pictures were only up to the offertory part of the mass. No group pictures, no reception pictures yet. Aaaak! How the hell will I pick 150 pictures ONLY? (Yes, I guess I chose too many happy bride with gown pictures. Can you blame me?) ;-)

Removing a picture from my list was out the of the question. I decided it would be easier for me to start from scratch than to "delete" a precious picture from my list.

One day, while I was away from the PC, I came up with a tentative and objective breakdown of the photos, just to make sure I wont go over 150.

guests coming in, outside church - 10
processional - 20
mass - 15
pictorials - 20
ceremonies - 10
reception groups - 20
speeches/people - 10
couple pictorials - 5
others - 10

Next, I installed Picasa to help me categorize the pictures I chose.

Advantages

pictures can be easily labelled, labels can be added and removed very easily
conveniently rotate pictures clockwise or counterclockwise
see chosen photos instantly
easily monitor the number of photos for each category and easily check this with initial breakdown

When you're happy with your chosen pictures, list the filenames and send to your photographer. It's that easy!

Baptismal and Confirmation Certificates for Marriage Purposes

Both the bride and groom must secure Baptismal and Confirmation certificates at most three months before the wedding day, as part of the church requirements. These documents are issued and stamped "For Marriage Purposes Only."

Obtain these documents from the parish office where you got baptized and/or confirmed. Be prepared with the month and year (if not the exact date) of your baptism/confirmation and names of sponsors for easier transaction flow. Your parish may charge fees ranging from PHP 50 - 200 (or maybe higher for others) for these documents.

There's no need for guests to travel to reception area, so your program can start right away
Yellow christmas lights and some capiz lanterns were hung on the trees, giving it a nice ambience
Since it's a garden, it's an open area... just make sure it doesn't rain on your big day.
Controlling the rain could be such a hassle (as if!), so do allocate tents in your budget. Tents could minimize last minute stress on the part of the couple, especially if rains are frequent just a few days before the wedding.
Even if you have tents covering your guests on the big day, if it was raining a few days before the event, some parts of the garden will still be like quicksand. Hassle for guests wearing stilettos!
