Hillary and Jay wed in Minnesota on a cold winter Friday in December. The beautiful winter backdrop provided gorgeous photos of the couple as the snow on the ground complimented Hillary’s gown beautifully. Her dress was a ball gown tulle style bottom accompanied by an intricate lace top that was absolutely stunning on the bride. The gown was tied together elegantly with a rhinestone waistband that added subtle sparkle to the gown.  

The bridal party was dressed in bronze, silver, and gold shimmery floor length gowns that complimented Hillary’s dress marvelously. During the photo session outdoors the bridal party dawned winter scarves that added a pop of color and fit the winter theme nicely.  Hillary added a beautiful cream colored, fur, scarflike accessory with a vintage rhinestone accent that assisted in bringing the winter theme to life.

Her groom Jay was handsomely dressed in a navy blue suit with a light silver tie. The groomsmen sported a festive winter blue as well. The flowers girls and ring bearer withstood the cold with the rest of the wedding party!

Plus ones can be tricky. You may have a set budget, which could mean a limited amount of guests. However, you don’t want to be rude to your guests’ significant others.

How do you deal with plus ones? Read on to find out.

Plus One FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What’s the rule of thumb with plus ones?

Generally, it’s only expected that you allow a plus one if the couple has been together long-term.

But how long is long-term? It’s not always black and white—some couples can date for years before considering themselves “serious,” while other couples are engaged after less than a year of dating! Use your judgement on a case-by-case basis when it comes to guests in relationships. One year is a good rule of thumb to determine who should be included if you’re unsure.

If your guest is engaged, living with their partner, or would consider themselves in a long-term relationship, you should probably invite their significant other.

If your 17-year-old cousin wants to bring her boyfriend of three weeks, it’s okay to politely say no.

And this may go without saying, but it is generally expected that you invite both halves of a married couple!

Should I mention plus ones in my save the dates or invitations?

Yes. If you’re not planning on inviting plus ones, make that very clear on your save the dates and invitations.

If you will be allowing plus ones, it might be a good idea to include an RSVP card with your invitations. This way, you can leave a space for your guest to write the names of who will be attending with him or her.

When you get your RSVPs back, keep an eye on who is planning on bringing a guest. You’ll want to make sure you have everyone’s name (and look out for anyone who tries to cram two or three extra names on their RSVP card)!

What language can I use on the save the dates or invitations?

In addition to including an RSVP card with room for two, you should also be intentional about whom you address the invitation to. If the invitation is addressed to “Jen Smith and Steven Jones” or “Jen Smith and Guest” it’s clear that the couple is being invited. However, if it’s only addressed to “Jen Smith,” that’s one more respectful clue to your guest that her plus one is not included.

What about parents with kids?

This is a somewhat separate issue, but you don’t have to invite children just because you’re inviting the parent. While it’s nice to be able to include the kids, it’s not uncommon to invite the adults only.

Be clear in your save the dates and invitations if you want to invite children or not. An invitation for “The Smith Family” clearly includes everyone, but if you only want to invite Mr. and Mrs. Smith, it might be a good idea to include some text that says “adults only” clearly on the invitation.

What if I’m unsure of whether someone will bring a plus one?

Unfortunately, you can’t control everyone and may need to be prepared for some surprises. However, if there’s someone you think may try to bring a date, try to talk to your guest ahead of time to clearly communicate what you’re thinking.

Again, we can’t stress enough how important it is to include your plus one policy on your invitations and save the dates. This will help set the right expectation.

What are some good reasons not to invite plus ones?

If you’re getting caught in a guilt trap because you feel like you “have to” invite someone’s plus one, try to remind yourself of valid reasons not to:

• Your venue has a maximum capacity that you need to stay within.
• You have a set budget, and every extra head means extra money on your bill. In some cases, keeping the guest list small can literally save you thousands of dollars!
• If the couple has not been together long-term, it’s not required.
• If everyone has a plus one, it may be harder for the single people to mingle and enjoy themselves.
• Just because you were invited as a plus one to someone’s wedding does not mean you have to return the favor.

What are some other circumstances where you should invite a plus one? 

There are a few circumstances where you may want to consider bending the rules a bit to allow your guest to bring another guest. Here are a few reasons:

• If your guest is from out of town or doesn’t know many people at the wedding, it may make him or her more comfortable to bring a friend.
• Your wedding party generally gets a pass to bring a plus one, regardless of their relationship statuses.
• If you get a few people who RSVP “no,” this can open up your guest list to allow a few extra people. If you don’t have a dedicated B-list, you can allow a few extra plus ones.
• If your wedding is outdoors where there are no capacity limits (and having extra guests doesn’t cost you anything more), you may want to consider being more lenient with your plus one policy.

Periwinkle, pink, and prancing through the night made this wedding one we will never forget! Set in downtown, Eva and Myke’s urban affair was full of laughter, dancing, and celebrating from beginning to end and we can’t wait to share all the darling details with you! Anticipation was building as Eva and Myke excitedly prepared for their big day at the gorgeous downtown venue St. Paul venue, A’BULAE. With her faithful wedding party at her side, the beautiful bride laced up her stunning Kennedy Blue wedding gown, while Estetica Salon & Spa gave her a full makeover and elegant up-do that was fit for a queen!

With her beautiful pink Bellagala bouquet in hand, Eva was glowing with excitement as she made her way down the aisle to meet her grinning groom who was fitted in a handsome tux by The Wedding Shoppe. Surrounded by family and friends, the lovestruck couple exchanged vows in one of A’BULAE’s many gorgeous ballrooms before dancing their way to the reception.

The celebration continued as guests gathered for dinner, dancing, and dessert. Newlyweds Eva and Myke took to the dance floor to show off their signature dance moves, wowing the audience with their talent and chemistry! Bellagala entertainment kept the party pumping as the guests joined in the fun and boogied the night away.

Wedding Roles: Listed.

Bride/Groom:

Okay, okay. So this is a no-brainer. Still, you need at least two people in one or both of these positions, or there really isn’t much of a point to coming up with wedding party ideas, is there?

Maid/Matron/Man of Honor:

You may have had this special person in mind before your spouse-to-be was even in the picture. This individual is head honcho of the bridal party and responsible for planning major events, such as the bachelorette party (they’re pretty much a big deal).

Bridesmaid/Junior Bridesmaid:

All your favorite ladies together at last! Whether you have three bridesmaids or thirty, your best friends will find a way to work together to ensure you look and feel your best, and that everything goes smoothly on your big day.

Best Man/Woman:

This person is your right hand on D-day (or your wedding, as everyone except your best bud calls it). Their biggest responsibilities are to protect your rings and pump you up before zero hour.

Groomsman/Junior Groomsman:

A team of your best buds that are a force to be reckoned with. They will completely ignore your attempts to corral them to fittings and have a stag party where everyone is fully clothed. And you will love them for it.

Usher/Junior Usher:

For whatever reason, these people weren’t important enough to make the bridal party, but you feel bad leaving them out completely. So, you assign them to hold doors open and assist the elderly to their seats.

Huppah Carrier:

If you’re having a Jewish ceremony, these people carry the Huppah. It’s unclear whether this is a step up or down from ushering.

Ring Bearer:

This miniature man no longer has the job of carrying really expensive and sentimental rings down the aisle. We can’t see any reason why. Sometimes people use a dog instead, but they don’t typically get to carry the real rings either.

Flower Girl:

This little lady might just steal the show from you, or she might chicken out beforehand and be carried down the aisle crying. Either way, you’ll have stellar memories to share with her before her own wedding, at which you’ll have to strongly resist the urge to pay her back for her shenanigans.

Page:

A more traditional position, and less common nowadays, these young boys (or girls) hold the bride’s train or escort her down the aisle. If you’re shooting for a Princess Diana look, pages are a necessity. Dig up those nephews or second cousins!

Candle Lighter:

If you’re having a unity candle ceremony, typically the couple’s parents/guardians will light the taper candles before the ceremony. You could, of course, choose anyone to fill this role.

Wedding Guest Book Attendant:

This position is perfect for that distant friend or relative who insists on helping out somehow. It’s not really necessary; so don’t be too concerned if you don’t have someone to fill it. People are either going to sign your wedding guest book or not. It’s up to you to decide if someone hassling them will help or hurt the cause.

Passage Reader:

In some weddings, one or more people may read a poem or psalm during the ceremony. This is a good position for teenagers or older relatives that weren’t included in the bridal party.

Wedding Program Attendant:

If you choose to have a wedding program handed out, it goes without saying that you need someone to do the handing out. This is a good job for a junior usher, but comes with its own title (pretty exciting!). Or you could just have the ushers do it.

Rice Attendant (or bubbles, or sparklers, etc.):

You know that fun photograph of the newlyweds rushing off to their honeymoon through a mass of friends and family throwing/holding <insert item here>? Whether you choose the traditional rice, something modern like waving cell phones, or something awesome like an arch of light sabers, you’ll need someone to organize everyone ahead of time.

Personal Attendant:

So, you have an acquaintance who is really organized and on top of things, but you don’t know them well enough to include them in your bridal party. Ask them to be your personal attendant; all the perks of a wedding planner without having to pay them!  (Read more about personal attendants).

Rachael dressed in her cap-sleeved, lace dress from Wedding Shoppe. Her mother buttoned up the back of her floor-length gown and loved helping Rachael get ready for her special day. She wore her hair pulled back to accent her jeweled headband.

Her lovely bridesmaids also wore floor-length gowns that were a pale pink. Each of the bridesmaids wore a different style of dress to best reflect their figure and personality. Rachael loved having these special ladies by her side. 

The couple’s reception area was decorated with lots of white details. Lanterns and flowers were the centerpieces of the tables with a rustic piece of wood. Greenery was placed on the bridal party’s table with signs that read “Mr. and Mrs.” Rachael and Travis’ wedding cake was an ombre of deep pinks faded into white. Everything about their reception was elegant, yet simple. The room was draped with white lights that added dimension and romance to Rachael and Travis’ reception with friends and family.

Their outdoor ceremony was also magical. Lanterns were standing at the end of every aisle and the backdrop was greenery amid waterfalls. This added a nature-inspired element to Rachael and Travis’ special day that was carried throughout the theme of their wedding design. Outdoors, there was also an archway of flowers and greenery that the couple walked under. The weather was perfect, and every detail came together effortlessly for Rachael and Travis’ entire wedding day.

Rachael walked down the aisle to meet Travis, and she was holding her bridal bouquet that was compiled of pink, white, and red flowers and accented with greenery. Rachael and Travis stood at the altar, surrounded by all of their loved ones.

The bridal party photos were so much fun for everyone to take. The backdrop of them was an open field with sunflowers that posed as the perfect details for the photos. The bridesmaids dresses were colorful, and accompanied the summer wedding theme perfectly. Rachael and Travis loved sharing their magical day with all of their loved ones.

Music is an easy place to start. Okay, “easy” may not be the word.

For the music-savvy, curating playlists is fun. For those of you who stick to the Top 100 Spotify playlist, it’s stressful.

To ease you into this, I’m going to focus on the “easiest” playlist of them all: your wedding dinner music. These are the songs that will be heard during your cocktail hour and delicious meal.

Since this is when you guests will be mingling, chatting, and eating, odds are they won’t pay much attention to the melody selection. It’s essentially background noise that shouldn’t distract from socializing.

However, the tunes you choose should add to the ambiance you’re looking for.

Before we dive into my carefully-selected compilation, I wanted to give you some tips for creating your own.

11 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Wedding Dinner Music:

1. First, every great playlist has 4 traits:

1. A mix of genres
2. A variety of tempos
3. A combination of popular and unknown songs
4. A “vibe” that ties them all together and creates the ambiance you desire

Folk can be mixed with pop, rock with country, etc. As long as they’ve all got the same vibe, you’re golden. Remember to think about every generation included on your guest list. What would your parents want to hear? Your Grandma?

You want a mix of tempos so it doesn’t fade too far into the background. If you choose all slow songs, your guests may zone out. If you choose all upbeat, it’ll distract.

There’s a reason certain tunes are at the top of the charts: People want to hear them! It’s essential to give the public what they want, but throw in a few unknown jams to spark their interest.

A compilation is only a success if every song complements one another. They may share a certain theme (romance, for instance), or maybe they tell your love story?

2. Don’t forget live bands.

If you have room in your budget, hiring a band may be worth it. They’ll get your guests excited, keep the energy up, and who doesn’t love a good cover?

3. How do you want to feel after you get married?

When choosing the “vibe” of your wedding dinner playlist, consider how you want to feel after you tie the knot. Celebratory? Romantic? Relaxed? It’s up to you! Find your feel then start choosing your songs.

4. Don’t waste dance hits.

Never waste a good party song on your cocktail hour. Save those crowd-pleasers for later.

5. Make sure your DJ knows your must-hear melodies.

Prioritize! Highlight the tunes you have to hear and make sure the DJ has them in their collection. If they don’t, you may have to pay extra fees to get them.

6. Create a do-not-play list.

While I love Bublé, he won’t be singing at my big day. Give your do-not-play list to your DJ and make sure they stick to it—even if the tune is requested by a guest.

7. Never skip a soundcheck.

You need to test the acoustics. You don’t want to be running over to your vendor every 5 minutes, telling them to turn the volume up or down.

8. No R-rated music.

Grandma and the kids are still going to be there…hold off on any curse words until dessert has been served.

9. Consider entire albums.

I know what I said about variety, but sometimes one album has everything you need. Rumours by Fleetwood Mac, Moondance by Van Morrison…there are plenty of incredible albums that can be combined for a simple, impactful playlist.

10. Be super detailed.

Don’t worry about being too Type A when planning. The more details you give your vendor, the more successful they’ll be.

When my brother got married, he gave his DJ a list of 30 songs. It exemplified the variety he was looking for—the “vibe” he wanted.

After studying what my brother gave him, the DJ found related artists and songs to include. He KILLED it at my brother’s wedding. Everyone was on the dance floor—grandparents included.

11. Don’t stress!

Like I said before, these tunes will be background noise. Don’t worry too much! Save that stress for your ceremony and reception music.
