2016 was a great year for couples to shatter the glass ceiling of fairytale wedding expectations, while making each wedding truly unique and personal.
This year saw many untraditional trends that left the big-box wedding industry behind. Brides-to-be ditched awkward, uncomfortable wedding dresses for convenience, while grooms got more stylish and formed unique wedding traditions. 2016’s untraditional wedding trends brought ceremonies to a whole new level.

1. Incorporating the Pantone Color of the Year

The Pantone Color of the Year for 2016 was rose quartz, and it makes sense that couples would go wild for this color. Rose quartz is a beautiful soft pink, perfect for weddings, and the stone’s meaning is love, compassion, peace, tenderness, nourishment and comfort.
Couples loved it, and rose quartz was anywhere and everywhere on wedding days. Brides tied cute rose-quartz bows to their high heels, and the color was used in bouquets, invitations, decorations, as a beverage color and on the wedding cake. What will become of the 2017 Pantone Color of the Year – greenery?

2. Rainbow Dip-Dyed Wedding Dress

It started with one photo shared across social media, you can find it here. And suddenly brides were dipping their bridal gowns in rainbow tie dye. Talk about tradition with flair! Bridal photos with the bride spinning had to be the best!
Remember ombre hair colors? Dip-dyed ombre wedding gowns ruled 2016, too. Integrating wedding theme colors or favorite color combinations may be a fun new tradition turned classic for years to come. Will grooms tie-dye their beards, or is that going too far?

3. Two-in-One Wedding Dress

A woman needs a dress for every occasion, and when it comes to weddings, there may be more than one way to dress. You may want something formal for the ceremony, but something more relaxed for the reception. How does a bride keep up?
Enter the two-in-one wedding dress in 2016, which makes you feel like you’re a professional dancer on “Dancing With the Stars,” at least in some imaginations. Convertible wedding dresses are an easy wardrobe switch by brides for more than one occasion, with a removable skirt to be reception-ready. While it may be similar to a costume quick-change for professional dancers, brides keep all the flair without sacrificing any style or sensibility. 2017, keep this trend!

4. Dapper Dudes With Stylish Attitudes

Who says men can’t take pride in looking good? 2016 ditched outdated expectations of tradition and welcomed men to claim their place and taste in the wedding process. 2016’s groomsmen trends included specific and unique looks for the wedding reception.
That meant custom suits to fit the wedding theme or personal tastes. A reception look could give a nod to a decade or a grandfather’s stylish wear. Some guys went all out with personal grooming: teeth whitening, regular beard trims and bow ties with dinner jackets.

5. Travel-Themed Weddings

Ever wanted to pick up the wedding party and go to a fabulous destination? 2016 gave permission to engaged couples everywhere to go to their dream wedding destinations, while staying right at home.
Travel-themed weddings work best with a place that has personal meaning. For example, you’d make your travel theme Italy-focused if your Italian grandmother made the best meals growing up and you want to honor that heritage. If home was halfway across the world, couples could bring that sense of place to the site of their wedding with a travel-themed wedding. If the budget didn’t work for a trip to India, then India became the wedding theme!

6. Farm-to-Table Food

2016 weddings kept the menu as local as possible. Farm-to-table was once a theme more geared toward fundraisers and festivals, but in keeping with simplicity and a down-home wedding, a farm-to-table menu was a 2016 hit.
Bonus points for tables that incorporated the menu into the decorations, such as herbs in the centerpieces. Fruits and vegetables found their way into the decorations and the bouquet for some couples.
What will this year hold for wedding planning? 2016’s untraditional trends saw a return to home with innovative thinking regarding travel, color and convenience, without sacrificing style or personal dreams. It will be exciting to see what this year holds.

While most brides rush to book a venue during the summer months, there are a lot of great things about having your big day during autumn. Not only are the autumn months cheaper when it comes to venues but the range of suppliers available may also be greater due to less demand. Let’s not forget there are some awesome holidays to piggyback on!

While having your wedding in the autumn won’t affect what you choose in regards to rings, hair and make up or even your dress, it is fun to tie the season in somehow. If you’re debating on planning an autumnal wedding, then here’s some inspiration to get you started:

Incorporate nature

Autumn is a beautiful time outside, so be sure to pick up some of the crisp leaves and use these within your décor. We love the idea of glittery autumn leaves examples can be found on Pinterest. They can be hung around the venue or used to decorate the tables. Using pinecones, like in the photo above, is a brilliant idea for name cards and doesn’t have to cost anything. Acorns and pumpkins are also great natural pieces to pick up that cost very little or nothing and tie in the season easily.

Run with the season’s color theme

Embrace those autumnal colors of red, gold, orange and yellow and use these as a theme within the wedding. You can incorporate these in your wedding flowers, the table decorations and even the accessories for the male members of the wedding party.

Have a sparkler send off

Why not capture the warmth of the autumn season by giving out sparklers to your guests and having a sparkler send off outside when you leave the venue. This will make for some great pictures and really embrace the spirit of the season.
