Gutter Shots is back with a look at the first three volumes of 20th Century Boys, Naoki Urasawa’s epic about friendship, cults and the end of the world. We talk about the manga, where it may be going from here and even a bit about the movie trilogy adaptation currently coming out in Japan. Focusing on 20th Century Boys, we also dip a bit into Urasawa’s other manga, particularly Monster and Pluto.

When not talking about Urasawa, Scott tries to explain Disney’s Phineas and Ferb to Ty with mixed results.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, “podcasting is hard work.” Sure the pay is great and the chicks dig it but at the end of the day, it’s just you, a microphone and a program that decides to crash at the very end, taking everything that you just recorded and dumping it into 800 temp files that are precisely 6 seconds long.

Thanks to such a program (Audacity, I’m looking at you,) we’re back after an unplanned week off. On this episode of Gutter Shots, we once again talk about EASTBOUND AND DOWN and try to figure out whether Kenny Powers is a loser or someone who we can sympathize with. We also talk about Scott’s Operation: Dump DirecTV that’s currently happening, the new movie MOON and a bit about WEDNESDAY COMICS from DC.

The computer gods willing, we’ll be back next week, talking about the first three volumes of Naoki Urasawa’s 20th CENTURY BOYS.

Gutter Shots #4– On Target

In this episode of Gutter Shots, Ty and Scott go to the shelves and pull out two crime classics; THE HUMAN TARGET and THE HUMAN TARGET: FINAL CUT. Ten years ago, Peter Milligan and artist Edvin Buikovic took a somewhat obscure Len Wein and Carmine Infantino creation out of the DCU and created a compelling story about identity, Los Angeles and faith. The four issue Vertigo miniseries created a John Woo-type movie on paper.

Three years later, Milligan returned to the character in THE HUMAN TARGET: THE FINAL CUT, an original graphic novel that picks up where the miniseries left off and create a Hollywood tale where identity and fame are only as permantent as a Variety headline. Javier Pulido’s fluid artwork and Dave Stewart’s brilliant colors create a true tinsel town where everything has a golden glow to it. Vertigo may just now be launching a crime imprint but these two stories (along with 100 BULLETS) are the solid roots of Vertigo’s crime story offerings.

Whither the Chicago Comic-Con?

I just got a PR email that made an announcement that caught my eye:

Veteran comic scribe Mark Millar is currently setting Hollywood on fire with properties like Wanted and Kick-Ass, and now the Scottish sensation will be meeting and greeting fans at Chicago Comic-Con. Known for his larger-than-life characters and action sequences that make Michael Bay movies look like “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” fans are guaranteed a rip-roaring good time when they meet Millar at any one of his numerous panels and signings taking place all weekend long.

Chicago Comic-con? There hasn’t been a Chicago Comic-con in many-a-year.

Could they mean this? Nope, don’t think so.

How ’bout this? Don’t think so.

At some point since last July (looks to be around October 2008 by this Wizard forum posting,) Wizard has rebranded Wizard World Chicago as Wizard Chicago Comic-con or, as their PR email shortens it- Chicago Comic-Con. It’s not a move completely out of left field but with this week’s announcement of Reed’s Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo, it seems like a bit of odd timing, as if they’re trying to one-up Reed with pulling out a name for the show that Wizard mothballed 15+ years ago after they bought the old Chicago Comic-Con.

The name “Wizard World” is obviously losing some of it’s prestige and the Chicago show has spent the last 10 years shrinking in prominence and importance as San Diego and New York have sky rocketed. I wonder if this is Wizard’s first attempt to turn their show around or the first desperate move of a show that just doesn’t matter anymore.Similar Posts:

Weekly Comic Shopping List 2/4/09

Let’s see… This week features the release of two books that I’ve been eagerly waiting, a manga title that I need already catch up on, a Star Wars book, a bunch of Legion stuff and Mike Allred’s existential meanderings disguised as a thinly veiled superhero book. Oh and non-Gaiman Sandman stuff.

While there’s no DCBS box coming for me this week, I’ve ordered a few things from Instock Trades as well that will hopefully be hitting my door before the weekend: Real v2 & 3 and Omega The Unknown. Hopefully with a trip to Michigan this weekend I’ll have plenty of stuff to read.

Star Wars Legacy Vol 5 Hidden Temple TP 9 (future)– I may end up sticking to getting every other book if that’s all Jan Duursema is working on.
Adventure Comics Vol 2 #0 (Origins & Omens Tie-In) (lcs)– Maybe. I’m kind of tired of the whole “string along Legion fans” going on right now and just want an honest-to-goodness Legion story.
Final Crisis Legion Of Three Worlds #3 (lcs)– And this may be it but did Johns really need to bring the Green Lanterns into this? I’m starting to think even Infinite Crisis may be better categorized as a GL stor
Sandman Dream Hunters #4 (lcs)– I wish I enjoyed this miniseries more than I actually did.
Madman Atomic Comics #13 (lcs)– Ah, the monthly trip into Mike Allreds’s mind.
Agents Of Atlas Vol 2 #1 (lcs)– YES!!!
Scott Pilgrim Vol 5 Scott Pilgrim vs The Universe GN (dcbs)– Here’s the sucky stuff about mail ordering books– the wait. Thanks to my twice-monthly comic delivery, I won’t get this book until Feb 12th at the earliest. To tide me over, I’m rereading the series right now. Maybe someday I’ll flesh out my “Scott Pilgrim is today’s Love & Rockets” theory a bit.
Slam Dunk Vol 2 GN Viz Edition (future)– I’ve got to read the first volume this weekend and hunt down this one.

You know it ain’t easy…

I love comics.

I think that the last time my sizeable comic book collection was in any kind of order had to be at least 16 years ago. It was that long ago that almost everything fit into a bunch of long boxes that were being stored at my parent’s house. Since then, I’ve moved at least 3 times, tried to bring together various mini collections dating back to my freshman year of college and eventually just gave up and now have one bedroom in my house that’s a minefield of comics, graphic novels and a few various toys here and there. Whenever I want to try to find something that I want to read, it takes me probably at least 20 minutes of searching through a lot of piles and boxes.

I hate comic books.

Because of this, I’m trying to give up as many of my monthly comics and just wait for the eventual trade or hardcover collection. There’s a couple of reasons I want to do this. The first is because I just enjoy the experience of rereading one collection more than rereading 6 different issues. The second is a bit more mercenary– if I can pass it up the first time in single issues, there’s a good chance that by the time the collection is out that I won’t want the book anymore. This has worked for me on DVD and I’m trying to make it work on comics. Once you can get past the Wednesday syndrome of having a book immediately, it’s easier not to get the book later on down the line. It’s not that I don’t want to buy comics, it’s just that I don’t want to impulsively buy comics that I know I’ll only read once and then probably never see again.

There used to be a time when I couldn’t walk into a comic shop without buying something and usually buying many things. Even if the shop didn’t have what I was looking for, I felt I needed to buy something. I’m glad I’ ve gotten out of that because lately I can easily walk into a shop and if they don’t have what I really wanted, I can just walk out the door, not spending any extra money.

I hate comic books but I love comics. For now, my room remains an unorganized mess and occasionally I slip and make a completely impulsive purchase that I later regret.Similar Posts:

Weekly Comic Shopping List 11/5/08

I was up way too late last night watching the election coverage. For my quick political message, I’m relieved and cautiously optimistic. Obama’s rhetoric the last 18 months has been what people obviously wanted to hear (myself included) but now I’m stuck waiting for the proof of concept to what he’s said. Can it all work? In some weird way, the last Democratic President to me was Josiah Bartlett on The West Wing. His Presidency was full of ideals and gumption but often seems stuck spinning its wheels, at least on TV. The last real President I was excited for was Clinton in 1992 but in the end, he let a lot of us down on certain levels and was hardly a man to really look up to.

Ah well, onto comics…

BPRD Vol 9 1946 TP (DCBS)– I still haven’t read the Abe Sapien collection. These BPRD trades are coming fast and furious lately.
Final Crisis Resist #1 (LCS)– I’m torn on whether or not I’m looking forward to this book. One one hand, it’s Rucka doing a Final Crisis tie-in and his Revelations mini has had some good ideas but the execution has been lacking. But this is also Rucka and co-writer Greg EricTautman returning to and maybe tying up Checkmate which is an excellent proposition. A preview on Greg Eric Tautman’s blog looks excellent though.
Justice Society Of America Vol 3 #20 (LCS)– One of DC’s most rugged and steady books by my accounts.
Sandman Dream Hunters #1 (LCS)– The novella Dream Hunters, illustrated by Yoshikata Amano, is a nice little work but I’m not too sure why DC feels the need to produce a comic adaptation of it other than seeing P. Craig Russell’s artwork, which is actually reason enough for me to buy it.
Absolute Sandman Vol 4 HC (future purchase)– The final tome. Now I’ve got to see if I can off load my old hardcovers on Ebay.
Ultimatum #1 (LCS)– For some reason, I think I have a superhero itch that this book may scratch in a way that Secret Invasion and Final Crisis aren’t.
Notes Over Yonder HC (DCBS)– I’m always happy to get a new Scott Morse book.
Freakangels Vol 1 TP (DCBS)– For some reason, my mind still isn’t wired for webcomics so even though I’ve read a large chunk of Freakangels, this book will contain a lot that I haven’t read yet. Ellis’s Avatar work lately has been pretty good and, from what I have read, I think this may be his strongest work, avoiding some of the cliches and pitfalls that usually crop up in his writing.

Plus there’s some Watchmen, Sandman and Miracleman talk that borders on obsessive. At least, I hope it only borders and doesn’t fall into the psychotic range.

They say every dog has his day but thanks to Don Rosa, we get to see that every duck has his life.

More specifically, Scrooge McDuck gets a life as his story is told in The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, an excellent biography of a fictional character. In this episode, Scott takes a look at Don Rosa’s graphic novel about Scrooge McDuck and what makes it an enjoyable book even if it does feature a walking and talking duck.
