In hindsight, seems like a pretty big user-experience goof to make you
enter a recipe, then go back and go through a separate process to add
your delicious, delicious photos. No longer!

You can still add photos and videos after the fact, of course. Thanks to John for suggesting the change! The legislation is called the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) and like SOPA, is the worst.thing.ever. Well, the worst legislation concering the internet ever, for sure. Basically, it would shut this site down – we would be legally responsible for policing the content that users upload. For We Eatt, that means SOMEHOW guaranteeing that the recipes users upload do not infringe anyone else’s recipes anywhere in the world. We Eatt would shut down.

We don’t want that. If you don’t want it either, visit AmericanCensorship.org for instructions on contacting your Senator. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has more information on this and other issues central to your freedom online. If you want more
technical information, read on: When we moved to a new set of servers, we wanted to reduce the amount
of memory available on each server. Rather than have 1 server with a
gig of memory, we moved to a set of servers with 256mb each. Trouble
was, that wasn’t enough.

We needed more than 256 and try as we might — couldn’t make it fit.
So the memory got taken up, moved to “swap” and then that got taken
up. No good came of this and the site slowed from a crawl to a stop.
We increased the memory on the application/web server to 512 and all
has been good for a while. Probably too much information, but there you go! Back to stable and
ready for the long haul.

Trouble with Servers

We’ve had a bit of trouble tonight with our new server setup.
Unfortunately, some requests seem to be taking forever, and its just
slowing down the site completely. We’ve provisioned some more horsepower (memory and servers), but
they’ll take some time to come online.

Right now it’s 11:15 PM on Tuesday, September 15th. It’s now on blog.weeatt.com. We switched our blog from a local Wordpress installation to a hosted
solution at Posterous, and linked http://blog.weeatt.com over to them.
Your existing RSS feeds will still work.

We did this to make posting easier (it’s very very easy on Posterous
[www.posterous.com]), and get information out to the blog faster. Since most of you find these posts from the homepage, shouldn’t affect
your life at all; but we post all changes here, so there you go!

Recent User Behavior

We recently had a user violate our community policies and I wanted to
tell you what we did, and what we believe our community here at We
Eatt is all about.

The user posted comments that were bordering on abusive and were
negative, or frankly childish. In my work life, I say “they did not
add to the value of the conversation.” Many of you were also sent
messages and friend requests that you did not expect or frankly want.

This was a first for We Eatt, but likely not the last. This type of
trolling is somewhat common on message boards, although our community
has been able to stear clear of that type of behavior.

What is our community all about? Well, as it has evolved, We Eatt is a
constructive environment to store your recipes and interact with your
in-real-life friends. The key word is constructive. If you don’t have
something nice to say, or possibly a helpful suggestion, please
refrain from posting.

We took the action of banning the user; it was difficult but I wanted
to show that I am intent on keeping this community a thoughtful
community.

In the future, we’ll add the following features

* “Block User” - be able to block a user from messaging you, or
commenting on your recipes
* Comment Moderation - be able to restrict comments on your
recipes from randoms. Also be able to delete comments that you don’t
want on your recipes.

Thanks for using We Eatt, we heart you!

US Senate Inaguration Recipes

The US Senate held an lunch today to celebrate President Obama’s inaguration, and posted the recipes. We Eatt was unavailable for about an hour.

Our provider logged that we were using up too much memory, which caused them to reboot our server.

We updated at status.weeatt.com and will post a technical explanation there.

We’re cooking more at home now than we ever have; the economy is encouraging (and sometimes forcing) families to spend less time and money at restaurants, but more time at home cooking. We couldn’t be happier!
