Western Railways first printing press heritage gallery opened at Mahalaxmi, Mumbai

Western Railways (WR) opened its first printing press heritage gallery named Western Railway Mahalaxmi General Stores Depot (GSD) at Mahalaxmi in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It was inaugurated by V P Pathak, Member (Materials Management) of the Railway Board.
It became the 1st press in Indian Railways to portray a heritage gallery of the printing and allied machines used in the Western Railway Printing Press since 1948.
The press came into existence in 1912 under the Greater Indian Peninsular Railway (GIP) Bombay, as the railway was in need of stationery and tickets to run the operations. In 1953, it was shifted to GSD Mahalaxmi at the WR.

Iran tests Medium-Range Missile: US Official

United States military official reported Iran test-launched Shahab-3, a Medium-Range Ballistic Missile inside its borders.
The missile was launched from the southern coast of Iran and landed east of Tehran.
It flew about 1,100 km, however, it did not pose a threat to U.S. or other Western military or shipping bases in the region.

Jordan opens its first underwater military museum.

Jordan, an Arab country in Western Asia, opened its first Underwater Military Museum Dive Site, off its Red Sea coast. The objective of the museum is to offer a new type of museum experience combining sports, environment, and exhibits for divers, snorkelers and visitors on glass-bottomed boats
The vehicles, including tanks, troop carriers and a helicopter, imitating a battle formation, have been stationed at a coral reef in the Red Sea.
Aqaba is the lone port city of Jordan and is a popular destination for divers.

Kaiga Atomic Energy station sets a World record

Kaiga Atomic Energy station (Karnataka) sets a World Record in the continuous operation of 962 days by Unit-1 of Kaiga Generating Station (KGS-1) among nuclear power plants of all technologies.
KGS-1 (220 MW) in an indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR) fuelled by domestic fuel which started commercial operation on November 16, 2000.

Apple to acquire Intel’s smartphone modem business for a transaction value of $1 billion

Apple and Intel signed an agreement where Apple will acquire the majority of Intel’s smartphone modem business for $1 billion.
2,200 Intel employees will join Apple, along with intellectual property, equipment, and leases.
The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter (December) of 2019.

ADB sanctions about Rs 2000 Cr for power projects in Tripura

Asian Development Bank has sanctioned 1,925 crore rupees project for upgradation of power generation and distribution in Tripura.
The amount was recently sanctioned to the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited.
The project has been sanctioned for upgrading capacity of 63 MW Rokhia Project to 120 MW at an estimated cost of over 699 crores and modernizing Gumti Hydro Electric Project at an estimated cost of nearly 1225 crore rupees.
Rokhia project is located at West Tripura district whereas the Gumti project is in Gomati district.

LSE Names A Professorship After Economist Amartya Sen

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has created a new academic position in honor of philosopher and economist Amartya Sen who was a professor there from 1971-82.
Called the “Amartya Sen Chair in Inequality Studies,” its holder will also serve as Director of the LSE International Inequalities Institute, which facilitates interdisciplinary work on subjects related to inequality.

US waivers for Iran oil imports end on May 2, won’t impact India's investments in Chabahar port

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the sanction waivers that it had granted to some countries still buying oil from Iran will terminate on May 2, 2019.
With this announcement, five countries namely, India, China, Japan, South Korea and Turkey will no longer be exempted from the US sanctions.
The United States clarified that the Chabahar Port Project would not be impacted by sanctions on Iran. The Chabahar Port Project is being developed by India in Iran.

Fabio Fognini became the 1st Italian to win an ATP Masters 1000 title at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters. He defeated Dusan Lajovic.
The Italian defeated World No. 3 Alexander Zverev to reach the quarter-finals and stunned 11-time champion Rafael Nadal in the last four.

National Panchayati Raj Day

National Panchayati Raj Day is celebrated every year on 24 April in India. On this day Constitution came into force with effect from 24 April, 1993.
In 2010 the 1st National Panchayati Raj Day was celebrated. A new part in the Constitution Part IX was added by passing 73rd Amendment Act from Article 243 to 243 (O) titled “The Panchayats” and a new Eleventh Schedule consisting of 29 subjects within the functions of Panchayats were also added.

SEBI reduces minimum subscription requirement for InvITs, REITs

Markets regulator SEBI has reduced the minimum subscription requirement as well as defined trading lots for Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs).
REITs have to offer their units in lots worth at least Rs. 50,000 in initial and follow on public offers.
The minimum value of a single lot should be Rs. 1 lakh in the case of InvITs.

The Authorised capital of Allahabad Bank raised to Rs. 8000 crore by the government

The Government of India has increased the authorized capital of state-owned Allahabad Bank from Rs. 3,000 crore to Rs. 8,000 crore after consultation with the Reserve Bank of India.
This move by the central government has enabled Allahabad bank to raise further fund up to a maximum ceiling of Rs. 8,000 crore.

Yogi won assembly elections in Japan

An Indian-origin Japanese "Puranik Yogendra" has been elected to Tokyo’s Edogawa Ward assembly, becoming the 1st Indian to win an election in Japan.
Puranik Yogendra, a naturalized Japanese, secured 6,477 votes, the fifth highest of the 226,561 valid ballots cast, in the April 21 poll.
Over 34,000 Indians live in Japan

Winners in the 6th annual Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards, the awards programme to recognize innovation in business throughout the entire Asia-Pacific region.
Among the winners of the 2019 Asia-Pacific Stevie Awards are 18 organisations in India. In total, they’ll receive 43 Stevie Awards: 10 Gold Stevies, 19 Silver and 14 Bronze. This high number of Gold, Silver and Bronze Stevies is evidence of the great performance of organisations in India.
Among the top overall winners are PT Petrokimia Gresik (Indonesia) with eight Gold, nine Silver and 15 Bronze Stevie Awards and SM Supermalls (Philippines) with three Gold, 25 Silver and 20 Bronze Stevie wins.

Michelin-star chef Vikas Khanna named IAAC brand ambassador

Michelin-star chef Vikas Khanna has been named brand ambassador of a leading cultural organisation which will organise the annual New York Indian Film Festival next month that showcases the celebrity chef’s film ‘The Last Color’ and Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer ‘Photograph’.
The IAAC will present the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF), North America’s longest-running and most prestigious Indian film festival from May 7 to 12. Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has accepted to join the IAAC board.

India clinched one gold, one silver and bronze at the Asian Wrestling Championship in China’s Xian .
World number one Bajrang Punia claimed a gold medal in it.
He defeated Kazakhstan’s Sayatbek Okassov 12-7 in a nail-biting 65kg men’s freestyle final.

SriLanka’s 1st Satellite ‘Raavana-1’ Launched Into Space

Sri Lanka’s first satellite ‘Raavana-1’ was launched into space from NASA’s Flight Facility on Virginia’s east shore. ‘Raavana 1’ weights around 1.05 kg and the lifespan of the satellite is around one and a half years.
The satellite was designed and built at the Kyushu Institute of Technology in Japan by two Sri Lankan research engineers. Its camera mission is to capture images of Sri Lanka and its neighboring countries

Singapore’s Changi Airport has long been touted as the “Best Airport In The World.” ,when it will officially open a dazzling presecurity attraction known as Jewel.
The Jewel Changi Airport is about $1.3 billion dollar project, connecting three of the four terminals at Changi Airport with the aim to increase the number of passengers coming to Singapore for visits and stopovers.
Inside is a lush four-story tiered garden, more than 280 retail and dining outlets, a hotel, a multi-screen IMAX theater and its centerpiece: a 130-foot-tall Rain Vortex, which is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall.

Canara Bank becomes the first public sector bank in India to meet RBI’s EMV mandate

ACI Worldwide, a global provider of real time electronic payment and banking solutions, announced that Canara Bank has successfully rolled out major new functionality to support EMV card acquiring across its ATM network and Aadhaar Authentication.
Canara Bank, one of India’s largest public sector banks with nearly 6,300 branches and a network of more than 10,000 ATMs, is the 1st public sector bank to shift to EMV chip and PIN for card present transactions across the country’s vast ATM network.
The EMV shift, as in other major global markets, is aimed at reducing lost and stolen card fraud and making counterfeit card fraud more difficult. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had set a deadline of December 31, 2018 for the switch, mandating use of an embedded chip to replace the traditional magnetic stripe card.

Indian Peacekeepers Awarded UN Medal of Honour

A total of 150 Indian peacekeepers serving with the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have received medals of honour for their dedicated service and sacrifice.
Under the UNMISS, the Indian Horizontal Mobility Engineering Company had completed the renovation of 145 km of roadway connecting Bentiu and Leer in South Sudan, easing the way for the delivery humanitarian aid, trade, and inter-communal dialogue.

IMF and World Bank launches ‘Learning Coin’ to explore Blockchain technologies.

International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank are launching their own Blockchain technologies and digital currency to familiarize staff with the concepts.
The currency will only be accessible within the organizations and will not be able to buy real-world goods and services. But a model digital currency economy will operate, as a kind of trial run.
Staff will earn the tokens by achieving training goals, then exchange their earnings for rewards of some kind.
The tokens will be accessed on an app called ‘Learning Coin’ to emphasize its educational use. The app will also support the institutions’ blogs, research and video content.

Christina Koch To Set Record For Longest Spaceflight By A Woman

NASA astronaut Christina Koch is going to have her mission on the International Space Station (ISS) extended to 328 days, which would set a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman.
Koch, who arrived at the space station on March 14 is scheduled to remain in orbit until February 2020, will eclipse the record of 288 days set by former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson in 2016-17.

3 Indian student teams won awards in NASA’s annual Human Exploration Rover Challenge at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
The team from KIET Group of Institutions in Ghaziabad won the “AIAA Neil Armstrong Best Design Award” in the college/university division.
The Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management and Engineering from Mumbai won the “Frank Joe Sexton Memorial Pit Crew Award”.

Nepal successfully launches its First satellite NepaliSat-1.

Nepal successfully launched its 1st satellite NepaliSat-1 into space from Virginia in the United States. The satellite, developed by two Nepalis Scientist Abhas Maskey and Hariram Shrestha at Japan’s Kyushu Institute of Technology
It is a low orbit satellite.
It will be stationed at the International Space Station for a month and then it will be sent to orbit the earth.
The satellite will take photographs on a regular basis to gather geographical information of the country.
It weighs 1.3 kilograms, making it a small satellite with limited capability

Haryana CM inaugurates Patanjali’s World Herbal Forest Project in Morni Hill

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar inaugurated the World Herbal Forest Project, a collaboration of Patanjali and Haryana Government, at Morni Hill, near Chandigarh.
The project covers over 52,000 acres of land in Morni Hills and is aimed at developing a forest of medicinal plants which will provide a huge boost to the Ayurvedic industry across the country.
About 25 different varieties of plants found in the country will be housed in this forest. 50,000 plants each of 20 medicinal varieties are being sown in the first phase of the project.

NITI Aayog Releases SDG India Index

The NITI Aayog has released a first-of-its-kind Sustainable Development Goals index released on 21st December 2018. According to the SDG Index, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu have been ranked on top 3 positions and are on track to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
The SDG Index aims to promote healthy competition among States by evaluating their progress in social, economic and environmental terms that will help India in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) by 2030. Based on the performance of the States and UTs across 13 of the 17 identified SDGs, a score ranging between 0 and 100 has been assigned to each of them in the index.
Kerala and Himachal Pradesh have been called as the front-runners in the Index with a score of 69. Chandigarh has been declared as the front runner in the Index with a score of 68 among the UTS. The state of Tamil Nadu (score 66) is at the top to meet the goals of eradicating poverty and providing clean and affordable energy. Assam, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are at the bottom of the rankings in the NITI Aayog’s Sustainable Development Goals Index .
Goa, Kerala, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland were the front runners on the Zero hunger sub-index.

The Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Radha Mohan Singh launched six new features of National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) Platform to make it more users friendly.

e-NAM is one of the major and important flagship schemes of the Government of India which is being implemented by Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare with the objective of providing competitive and remunerative price to farmers for their produce through online competitive bidding process.

The six new features are e-NAM Mobile App includes-

1. MIS dashboard for better analysis,

2. BHIM payment facility by traders,

3. Mobile payment facility by traders,

4. Enhanced features on mobile app such as gate entry and payment through mobile,

5. Integration of farmer’s database, and

6. e-Learning module.

The objective was to bring more transparency and competition and provide remunerative prices to farmers. Keeping in view the need of making marketing of commodities easier for farmers.

e-NAM was envisioned and launched in 21 Mandis on 14th April 2016 which has now reached 479 Mandis across 14 states and 1 Union Territory. e-NAM website is now available in eight different languages (Hindi, English, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and Odia) while the live trading facility is available in six different languages (Hindi, English, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi & Telugu).

India's ranking in corruption perception index falls to 81

India has been ranked 81st in the global corruption perception index for 2017, released by Transparency International. The index ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption. In the 2016 India was in the 79th place among 176 countries.

The index uses a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean. In the latest ranking New Zealand and Denmark were placed the highest, with scores of 89 and 88, respectively. On the other hand, Syria, Sudan and Somalia were ranked lowest with scores of 14, 12 and 9, respectively.

India has ratified the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol that commits countries to contain the emission of greenhouse gases, reaffirming its stand on climate action. With this, India became the 80th country to accept the amendment relating to the second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, the international emissions reduction treaty.
The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which commits its Parties by setting internationally binding emission reduction targets.

Gujarat First State to Implement Coal Utilisation Between Power Units

The Gujarat government has issued a tender for power developers to receive cheap coal marked for the state in return for selling coal-based power at less than Rs 2.82 a unit.
Through the auction, Gujarat will transfer the coal allocated to power generating stations owned by Gujarat State Electricity Corporation (GSECL) to more fuel-efficient private power plants. The aim is to reduce the cost of fuel for financially ailing distribution companies and ensure effective distribution of domestic coal.

NCERT launches Web Portal for supply of NCERT Textbooks

Minister of State for Human Resource Development Upendra Kushwaha launched the NCERT’s Web portal for supply of textbooks to schools and individuals at a function in New Delhi.
The portal will ensure better distribution of textbooks across the country and address the concerns of schools and parents, regarding unavailability of textbooks. The Web Portal can be accessed at www.ncertbooks.ncert.gov.in.
They can place their orders by login in onto the portal, and books will be delivered at their doorsteps with nominal postal charges. The NCERT textbooks can also be downloaded, free of cost, from its website.

Qatar scraps visit visa requirements for 80 nationalities

Qatar has announced scrapping of visa requirements for visitors from 80 countries including India to host the Football World Cup 2022.
Under the new policy announced by Qatar Airways and authorities, citizens of 33 mostly European countries can enter without a visa for 90 days in single or multiple trips during a 180-day period.
Qatar's economy has taken a hit since Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain moved to isolate it two months ago over allegations it supports extremists.
This will be the first time the World Cup will be held in the West Asia. This tournament will be the last one to involve 32 national teams, including the host nation, as the next one will have 48 teams.
