One of the frequently requested enhancements to Windows Home Server v1 was the ability to back up and restore the server. In this original version, you could back up your shared folders. You could not back up the server itself in the case of an Operating System hard drive failure, virus, corrupted disk, or other catastrophe. You could only back up the client backup database through an add-in. With Windows Home Server 2011, all that changed. You can now back up any part of the file system of your home server, or the entire file structure. Creating such a backup was discussed in the last chapter. In this chapter, we are going to discuss how to restore this data to your server in the event of a catastrophe.

Later this year, Microsoft will be unleashing Windows 8 upon the world. As part of this latest Windows generation, we hear such terminology as “Metro”, “Windows RT”, “Storage Spaces”, “tablets”, and “slates”. Is Windows 8 the new Windows Vista, or will it be a true revolutionary step forward for Microsoft’s venerable OS? Is it the do-all OS that Microsoft hopes it will be, including (perhaps) the new Windows Home Server? What do you think?
