<p>The surgical procedure works by limiting food intake and suppressing appetite. If you have an obesity-related medical condition, you may be able to improve your health by undergoing bariatric gastric bypass surgery.</p>
<p>The accumulation of large amounts of excess fatty tissue &#8211; known as morbid obesity &#8211; is sometimes treated with gastric bypass. <p>Gastric bypass surgery helps you lose weight by changing how your stomach and small intestine digest the food you eat. After the surgery, your stomach will be smaller. You will feel full even with less food. Also, the food you eat will no longer go into some parts of your stomach nor into the small intestine that breaks down food. Therefore, your body will not absorb all the calories from the food you consume.</p>
<p>Gastric bypass can be done in two ways. The first way is for your surgeon to make a large incision in your belly. Your surgeon will then reach inside and perform  the bypass by directly moving around your stomach, small intestine, and other organs.</p>
<p>The second way to do bariatric gastric bypass is to use a tiny camera, or laparoscope. This is called laparoscopic bariatric surgery. First, the surgeon will make several small incisions in your belly. Then he or she will pass the laparoscope through one of these incisions.</p>
<p>The camera will be connected to a video monitor in the operating room, and your bariatric surgeon will look at the monitor to see inside your belly. Using thin surgical instruments, the doctor will perform your bypass.</p>
<p>There are two basic steps involved in both kinds of gastric bypass:</p>
<p>Step one reduces your stomach size. Your bariatric doctor will use staples to separate your stomach into a small upper section and a larger bottom section. The top section of the stomach is called the &#8220;pouch&#8221; and this is where the food you eat goes. This pouch is about the size of a golf ball. It holds only about 1 ounce of food.</p>
<p>The second step is the bypass itself. Your gastric surgeon will connect the jejunum, which is a part of your small intestine, to a small hole in your pouch. The jejunum is located farther down from where the stomach normally attaches to the small intestine. Food consumed will now move from the pouch into this new opening into the small intestine.</p>
<p>When food travels this way, it bypasses the lower part of your stomach and the first section of the small intestine. As a result, your body will now absorb fewer calories. Gastric bypass surgery usually takes about 4 hours.</p>

<p>Starting on the day you go home from the hospital, you should drink two ounces of high-protein liquid nutrition supplement every hour throughout the day. This must be a nutritionally-complete liquid that can pass through a standard strainer.</p>
<p>In addition to this nutritionally-complete liquid, you should attempt to consume two ounces of water or non-carbonated low calorie liquid every 15 minutes, for a total of eight fluid ounces per waking hour.</p>
<p>The most important thing is to drink enough liquids to prevent dehydration. Protein consumption is less important. You must drink a total of six to eight cups of liquids per day to avoid becoming dehydrated.</p>

<p>Do not start solid foods until you have your three week follow-up visit with your doctor and bariatric surgery dietitian.</p>

<p>It is important that you recognize when you are full. Signs of fullness are pressure, tightness, or heaviness in the center of your abdomen just below your breast bone. A feeling of nausea, regurgitation, or heartburn is a sign that too much food has been consumed or was eaten too rapidly.</p>
<p>After 10 to 12 weeks, you should ready to go from soft solids to regular foods. Eventually, you will probably be able to eat many of the foods you were eating before bariatric surgery, but in much smaller amounts.</p>

<p>This minimally invasive laparoscopic bariatric surgical procedure involves a bypass of a portion of the stomach. Options include laparoscopic isolated gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band, and sleeve gastrectomy.</p>
<p>Four to six small openings approximately one-half to one inch long are made in the patient&#8217;s abdomen. These openings allow the bariatric surgeon to pass a light, a camera, and some surgical instruments into the abdomen. </p>
<p>The abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas in order to allow the surgeon to get a better see the inside of the stomach and its internal structures. Surgical instruments about the size of a pencil are placed into the abdomen to perform the surgery.</p>
<p>In a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, more than 95 percent of the stomach is bypassed and only a small portion remains functional.</p>

<p>In an adjustable gastric band procedure, the stomach is restricted by the placement of the gastric band, which can be adjusted after surgery for further weight loss.</p>
<p>A  procedure known as a sleeve gastrectomy involves the removal of roughly 70% of the stomach via a bypass of the intestines.</p>
<p>The concept behind laparoscopic bariatric surgery is to create a small pouch in the upper part of your stomach with a controlled and adjustable stoma. This is done without stapling, thereby limiting food intake.</p>
<p>A gastric band device is inserted through very small incisions in the abdomen and then placed around the upper part of the stomach. The resulting pouch (sometimes called the &#8220;new stomach&#8221;) dramatically reduces the digestive capacity of the stomach. <p>Restrictive bariatric surgeries include Adjustable Gastric Banding (AGB) and Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG). These procedures do not alter your digestive system, however they do reduce the amount of food you can ingest. After the surgery, a person is only able to eat about one cup of food at a sitting.</p>
