Knowing well about what he wanted to do and what kind of look he wanted to sport, this was what Thomas, our wellgroomed groom shared about his downright dapper style:

“I have always been fascinated by the traditional english country style, with tweed and a three piece suit with classic brown double buckled monkstraps. I would call my style a crossover from classic saville row fabrics and style, with the slim fit and uniqueness of the hipster movement.”

Some like to go with one or the other, simply traditional or exclusively something modern. Thomas went through the bases and scored a home run!

This Well-Groomed Groom's Nailed the "Mismatched" Wedding Attire

Can the groom wear a different colored jacket and pants? Today we're delighted to show a groom's mismatched look that is absolutely on point.

Rachel & Tino have the best personalities. They fit each other perfectly! They met while working together at a local electronics store. Having to take some of the same training classes, Tino asked an obscene amount of questions to get Rachel's attention. Well, it worked.

Fast forward to their nuptial planning, our groom was eloquently involved - especially in designing his look. Tino said, "I got the idea of having different colored pants from browsing Instagram. From there, I added in my style. I had a vision on how I wanted to look, and just made it happen." While getting his custom suit created, he picked every single detail on the suit, from the color of the stitching to the bugle of the pockets. His shirt was from Express as they had the cutaway collar he was looking for.

They also honored Tino’s root & culture by slipping into the Traditional Laotian attire - and rocking it! "When we went a few years ago, we picked colors and patterns we liked best at the market shops."

Well-Groomed Groom: A Boutonniere with a Personality

Today's Well-Groomed Groom, Drew, brings a little whimsy in his ensemble.

From afar, he wears an excellently fitted suit that has all the right checklist. Look closer though and you're invited to a suave journey of style.

The checks and stripes patterned tie in purple-blue-white colors gives an instant style boost, while the subtle windowpane sits sartorially on the neutral grey suit. And something gave the outfit an even extra excitement, whimsical peacock feather boutonniere with calla lily and scabiosa.

Every single element here is eye-catching but not over-powering. It exudes class and sophistication without trying too hard. Well put together!

Clear cut signs that you’re a well-groomed guy are the way you suited up and the way you treat your lady. Our guy, Spencer – who wore slim fit navy blue scattered dash patterned suit paired with white slim fit french cuff dress shirt, fun light blue ice cream cone patterned tie, tie bar, leather belt, red socks and double monk shoes for his engagement photo shoot – was one good example. He was not only suited up with the right outfit for the right occasion, the fit was unbelievably perfect and he clearly made his soon-to-be-Mrs. danced happily!

WG Encyclopedia: LACMA's The Reigning Men, A Magnificent Exhibit on Men's Fashion Evolution

Thrilled. That was how we felt when we had the opportunity to fly to Los Angeles, CA – a few months back - and visited one of Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)’s coolest special exhibit called “The Reigning Men”.

Spanning 300 years of fashionable menswear - dated back from the lavish 18th century until the present uber-chic 21st century, the exhibition was totally spot on! The 200 different looks highlighted the connection between history and men’s fashion, and how live events have influenced men’s fashion for centuries. French revolution, the shift of smoking habits (from pipe smoking to cigars and cigarettes), global trade and commerce, cultural exchanges, changing attitude towards animal fur/products, certain motifs and color, etc. - they all play a part in the evolution of menswear. In the mental level, the special exhibit also showed everyone how us men had the same awareness about our physique as our female counterparts, our same high standard with regards to attention to details, and our concern for our appearance. Hey, we all wanna look good!

You’re engaged — congrats — but it’s “Business Time,” and you just want to rock out really: plan (and survive) your incredible wedding and then take an amazing honeymoon. Oh and as a Groom, it is customary for you to plan the honeymoon. You have quite a holiday checklist in store – so simply think about it as the most awesome vacation you’ll be going to.

Put the planning phase into action about 6 months in advance. Simply savor the excitement of brainstorming your adventures as a couple, whether it is flipping through thousands of pages in your Travel + Leisure magazine, discovering options with your travel agent, or even tracking down the coolest waterfall buried in one of your Pinterest boards, you should begin the journey by considering these:

TIMELINE
Check with your better half how long you want to venture out for, so that you can plan on taking time off from work and adjust your budget accordingly.

WHERE
Debate whether you want to ponder the majestic rain forest and eco wonders, take a lazy stroll through the garden of Versailles, or splash around in the shorelines while snorkeling, kayaking, and sunbathing beyond the two miles of white sand beach. Brainstorm a few options and together, you can make the best decision where you both will enjoy your first trip as husband and wife.

WHAT TO DO
Once the location is set, you’ll want to dive into planning. Depending on your interests, get started on booking your reservations! Start out by reserving a decadent lunch at a Michelin Star restaurant, getting a local tour guide to help navigate twisty scenic roads deep in Bali, or plan for the perfect westward sail following the sunset.

STAY
There are certainly a handful of hotel deals out there. Perhaps consider splurging a little extra to stay in a luxurious hotel—after all, this is a once in a lifetime vacation! Pick a spot with an unobstructed view of the unbelievable caldera, a boutique hotel with authentic white washed curved wall architecture and full-of-character interior, or even an all-inclusive charming resort. Well-Groomed Groom: 49ers Inspired Groom

Man, he must have bought his attire from way cooler time or dimension or something. We don’t get to see enough grooms sporting hunting-style jacket nowadays. Especially in Bay Area, California – where hunting is the not-so-much-sported-anymore.

Tattersall patterned shirt combined with herringbone patterned hunting-style jacket, complete with all the blows and whistles, i.e. those shoulder and arm pads.... We're still in awe as we flip through photos of Brandon & Shan’s wedding that were not only captured tastefully by Natalie N Photography, but also showed a strong dose of creativity in the fashion department.

Here’s what our well-groomed groom, Brandon, said about his attire:

"The color theme of the outfit is based on the 49ers colors. I chose the bow tie so I could stand out form the groomsmen."

Not only was Brandon able to express his fandom of sports and stayed true to himself, he still took the formality of a wedding into action. For sure, Brandon DID stand out from the groomsmen. That combo which gravitates toward his favorite team 49ers’ colors in the form of red, black & white Tattersall patterned shirt combined with golden brown hunting-style jacket and trousers, red bowtie, black sports watch and a single-stem red rose boutonniere was simply put - a totally awesome nuptial of manly sports and a sartorial flair.

From the illustriously cool Lego-like miniatures representing our Well-Groomed couple: Brian & Tina, to the gems and agate slices studded decor - this vow renewal ceremony was a whimsical celebration of love filled with modern geometric display.

Carrying the theme into the outfit, Brian's notable picks of the chambray washed blue shirt and grey-navy necktie featured a synchronized polka-dot. When in many cases this dotty pattern creates an uber playful vibe, Brian's pairing it up with solid grey suit and trousers balanced the effect and created a sartorially sleek and polished look. As a topping, the little details in the form of metal tie bar and boutonniere added just the right amount of radiant tint into the combo. Plus, that catchy pair of suede blue wingtip shoes? We say, spot on!

“That's what I've always tried to do”, says Joseph Abboud when we talked about his signature look, “is to make American men more sophisticated and have them be more wordly, not just be so preppy or so American.”

The iconic American menswear designer, Joseph Abboud, was personally involved in this year's BRIDES Live Wedding series featuring Elle Fowler, YouTube star AllThatGlitters21 who posts beauty and style-related tutorials, and her groom: Alex Goot, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist from New York. Just as the bride carefully chooses her gown, Men’s Wearhouse believes the groom should have his special look too. In between his busy schedule, Joseph Abboud gives an exclusive Well-Groomed Interview where he shares his insights on grooms wedding wear and his style philosophy.

RE: MENS WEDDING STYLE GUIDE

Well-Groomed: Some may not know the difference between a suit and a tuxedo. Do you have a tip on how to distinguish the two and general rule of thumb for when a tuxedo is more appropriate than a suit?

Joseph Abboud: Generally a true tuxedo has some kind of a trim on a lapel; there's a formal element to it. Like a satin lapel or a grosgrain lapel. So you have something that defines it that you can visibly see.

But, you touched on something interesting: "can you explain the difference". You can take a dark, a black suit that doesn't have any trim on it, and wear it with formal accessories to create a formal look. In and of itself that might not be considered a tuxedo but the rules are blurring a little bit. So men can sometimes dress up, really dress up a very dark suit, [and it] feels like you were wearing a black tuxedo.

WG: Are the formal look whether true tuxedo or dressed up dark suit appropriate for day time weddings as well?

Joseph Abboud: I think they both can be done daytime or evening.

WG: What do you see as the big trend in grooms-wear this coming season?

Joseph Abboud: Well it's interesting that we see a lot of seasonal evening wear and tuxedo pieces. For example, the Ivory jacket, the light jacket. (We don't really call it pure white, more of Ivory) for let’s say southern weddings or outdoor weddings.

(We also see) things that are little bit more associated with the environment. It isn't always just about the black tuxedo.

WG: And is there a certain detail element that you think will come up more? I saw your beautiful F/W collection and I just love that high composition on the feather lapel pins.

Joseph Abboud: Yeah they were great ones.

Well, that was a fall show so you probably saw a lot of black velvet which are beautiful for evening and wedding wear. For example, if you're getting married in a lodge or somewhere that has a country feeling, You could then add those kind of details that are appropriate. I love doing that. And the scarves are beautiful as well.

So it really depends on the individuality and let’s say the creativity of the groom along with the bride's consent.

WG: Right, right and I think that’s really the general feeling right now, isn't it? It’s no longer just about wearing a black and white tux but it's adding an element of personality to it.

Joseph Abboud: That’s right. It’s bringing your own personal style into it. And the rule about that too is: just remember that 20 years from now, you're going to be looking at pictures of yourself. So you wanna try to always do it in good taste.

Think about it. You don't wanna look back and say "Oh my God, what did I do!"

Is there ever an occasion for a groom to wear short sleeves?

Joseph Abboud: I mean, I don't see that because it feels almost as if it is disrespecting the moment. You can be creative but short sleeves, I would say no.

If they were no jacket, just shirts - I would suggest wear a long sleeves linen shirt. Make it kind of sexy and romantic. See, the bride is going to be somewhat of a bride, right? She’s going to wear a wedding dress, (so) you need some formality even if it’s casual formality.

WG: You mentioned about an ivory jacket and I sometimes see an all white tuxedo. What kind of color of shoes, socks and accessories should be worn?

Joseph Abboud: If you're wearing all white, I’m assuming it's generally for the warm weather or summer? So I like that with no socks, which is very cool. I don’t see black shoes; not necessarily white either. I think you need to find something that blends rather than a heavy contrast. So, maybe something like a bone shade.

It (also) depends on the kind of shoes. Maybe you're wearing a slip on, suede dress slip on like an evening slipper. You could do something like that. If you're doing white, ... I would only recommend that to warm weather climate.

WG: Is there any rule to mixing and matching materials? So if the groom wears a linen suit, can he wear silk / satin tie or something else to go with it?

Joseph Abboud: Yah, I like fabrics for the season I like the idea of velvet for fall and linen for spring and summer, because I like the seasonal aspect about it. I think that’s really important, but then that’s where your individuality comes into play. I do think it’s important that you add your own special touch. But as we said before, remember? You're going to be looking at this or a long time so make sure you do it well.

RE: THE BASICS ON MENSWEAR

WG: Are there different style tips or rule for dressing different body types?

Joseph Abboud: Yes. Just because the trim or the skinny suit is in, doesn’t mean it fits all body types. If you're doing a suit or a tuxedo, you wanna it to be tailored right.

Tailoring is very important.

And is there a good resource for the guys to learn about the rules of dressing up?

Joseph Abboud: You know that's so interesting. Many companies, like us have a website and we talk about formal wear. Men's Wearhouse does a great job with our evening and formal programs - our Joseph Aboudd formal business is really strong and we can provide very good information on how to style.

WG to the readers - at this point, we both agree that there is a lot of valuable information out there, but no one stands out as a one-stop-resource for the ultimate menswear guide.

Joseph Abboud: So, you can go into great stores who do formal wear and (they) can help you with it. I should probably do one. I’d love to be able to get that information out to guys and give them tips as much as I can, you know would love to be able to help them understand that.

WG: Not that you have too little on your plate, but I think that’s a brilliant idea for your next project?

Joseph Abboud: Yes, I have so many, but yeah (laughing).

RE: HIM

You’re an iconic men fashion designer. Who do you look up to in the industry?

Joseph Abboud: I worked for Ralph Lauren for 5 years as one of his design team. And I really, really admire Ralph Lauren because of what he's done over the years. Such a great job in bringing American style to men. So he’s someone that I’ve always respected. And you know I considered him a friend and a mentor.

What was the most challenging styling or the design moment that you had?

Joseph Abboud: I think it was when I created my first collection. That was in 1987. What I wanted to do is to change the way American men look. I didn’t want them to be too preppy or too boyish, I want to create a modern American collection that has international appeal. So using more sophisticated color and shape but still being an American designer. And that was when I launched my first collection. We were very successful in selling in the best stores in the country because I think we hit a nerve. So that is a design moment I will never forget.

TAKE HIS FASHION ADVICE STRAIGHT TO YOUR CLOSET

WG: What would you say to those who just don’t believe in the concept that “they need to dress to impress"?

Joseph Abboud: Oh! I think that you and I can say that that’s actually the worst thinking possible. The young consumer today needs more than ever to make a presentation of who they are personally. And you express yourself through your clothes. I can’t tell you how many young guys who have graduated from college seeking from their first jobs want to get that perfect suit. They know that dressing well is key, because you have to do business with people face to face. You have to make a good first impression and dressing well is very important part of that.

There are also ways to still dress casually and still be well dressed.

And that’s the difference - rather than just a T-shirt and Jeans, although we all love that... the new soft jackets allow a guy to be a little more casually dressed but still be dressed appropriately for meeting his girlfriend’s parents or going out on a first date or even going for a different kind of job interview.

A guy needs a jacket on his wardrobe.

You can’t think you can get away without dressing appropriately somewhere.

Well-Groomed Groom: Retro-Cool Windowpane Pattern

As classic style grows in popularity, our Well-Groomed Groom, Damien, chose the appeal for his BIG day. With crisp white shirt that acted like a base of negative color, he put on dark tan leather suspenders - a retro style flair which goes along with his windowpane-patterned suit trousers that has no belt loops on it (loops-free). He then added a blush pink bow tie, a classic, matching patterned suit jacket and boutonniere on top. This throwback color combo was understated but suggested elegance and sophistication at the same time.

There's this quote that I picked up from my trusted, 20yr-favorite tailor that embedded in my head, saying, "A perfect fit makes any man look sharp and sexy". And I can't help noticing that Damien’s suit was one good example of it. Suit collar that stayed in contact with the collar of the shirt, lapel that rolls softly to the button, cuffs that showed about half-inch of the white shirt underneath when he was standing... Just. Perfect. If I were the King of The World, I'd definitely get everyone a custom made suit like this one! Or at least custom tailored ;)

No doubt, Damien's style attire matched the classical grandeur of his nuptial that was held on historic Santa Barbara Mission. As for the celebration afterwards, his choice of taking off the suit jacket made him looked more laid back, yet so dapper - thanks to those rich leather suspenders. Oh…and the shoes? The pairing of handsome brogue cap toe oxford shoes with polka-dot socks was one of those playful moves that scored!

The outfit focused on an overall a bohemian look, and we juxtaposed that approach with a well manicured hairstyle, black tie, belt and a ceramic watch with accents of light blue on the watch face.”

Our featured Well-Groomed Groom, Justin Reno, likes thing casual and he chose to have a casual, intimate beach wedding with only the closest members of his and his bride's circles. My finacee and I are doing an outdoor ceremony and reception at a local vineyard. I have decided to do navy suits, dusty shale ties, and light brown shoes for the grooms. There is one problem, I have an identical twin brother. So, to distinguish myself from him, I've decided to dress it up just a bit more and wear a navy blue tux (all navy, no black in the tux. Calvin Klein Navy extreme slim fit tux). I will also be wearing a bow-tie. I would like to wear light brown shoes with the naxy tux, however, everything I've read states you should wear black shoes with any tux. What is your opinion? Thanks. - Josh

Hi Josh, Congratulations on getting married. If your tux has a black lapel, of course we would recommend wearing black shoes. But since your tux has a blue lapel, then you can either pair it with black shoes for a traditional style, or with brown shoes, if traditional is not really your direction :)

It is hard sometimes to distinguish a tuxedo and a suit. The most noticeable difference between a tuxedo and a suit is the fabric on the lapel part and the lining. The lapel on a tuxedo uses satin (the shiny looking fabric) while the lapel on a suit uses the same fabric as the rest.

You meet your match! All the stars are aligned, everything feels right, and you are both ready for the next step. YOU’re ready to get down on one knee and put a ring on it. But what exactly do you have to do? What’s next? Where to start?

Let’s break it down.

ASK HER FATHER

Not to brag or anything, I flew across the world to propose to Mrs. Well-Groomed’s parents. Because it was THAT important for her and her family. If you seek to be approved, look no further than her dad.

THE RING

1. Getting Educated

It is a jungle out there. Hitting the shelves without knowing anything is just not wise, like going to a car dealer and "letting" the sales guy talk you into upgrading to the butt-massage enabled passenger chair. (Not against it, if that’s your thing and you have the money for it, it actually is ergonomically helpful). No need to be a certified gemologist, but having a clear understanding of the 4Cs is an excellent start to understand what you’re investing in.

2. Budgeting

2. Practice

Patterns in men fashion have come a long way as designers continue to include and create more in their canvases. But some patterns, like plaid and check, remain popular since the beginning of the 17th century, and have certain meanings that were socially embedded and continue to do so, some because of the history and/or the popularity of their first users.

As fall is here and winter season is coming, plaid and check patterns are back in fashion. We’d like to share some of our knowledge about the popular patterns with all of you.

Tartan dates back to 17th century and has its own nationalist history because of its common use in Kilts, which is the national dress of Scotland. Tartan patterns are designed with vertical and horizontal stripes that cross at the right angles to form checks of varying sizes. Tartan patterns are often used in woolen and cashmere fabrics. The most famous tartan pattern in modern fashion world today is the cream-colored base with black, white and red stripes, which was made famous by the English fashion house Burberry. Because tartan is a bold plaid pattern, other than for flannel shirt, tartan should best be used to accentuate your attires or for accessories (such as ties, bow ties and scarves). Tartan wearers are often perceived as classics or traditionalists.

How to style the Tartan plaid:
Tartan flannel shirt is okay for one of those laid-back, cozy, relaxing kinda day. For a more well-groomed style, use Tartan as an accent (like tie or pocket square or both for a more structured look). Pair it with solid white shirt or solid shirt in the same hue, and solid suit.

Glen Plaid pattern got its name from Glenurquhart Valley in Scotland, England. This pattern was popularized by the Duke of Windsor and Prince of Wales, which is why some people also refer too this pattern as The Prince of Wales Plaid. Most commonly found in woolen suits and sports coats, this pattern consists of alternate small and large checks in muted colors, often in grey and white. This pattern have also been favored by Presidents and gentlemen, hence people who wear Glen Plaid often perceived as Important People.

How to style the Glen Plaid:
To create that Very Important look, Glen Plaid should be the center point. Glen Plaid suit + solid white shirt + tie in the same hue + pocket square. If you need extra warmth, add a solid vest. Add polka-dot patterned scarf within the same hue for that modern twist.

Tattersall

Originated in London, England as far back as 18th century, Tattersall usually consist of thin, regularly spaced stripes in contrasting colors like black and red on a base of white, or blue and orange on a white base. A Tattersall-patterned shirt is very versatile: depending on the color, Tattersall-patterned shirt can be worn as business casual or sophisticated formal attires. People who wear Tattersall-patterned shirt are often perceived as traditional, versatile, and sophisticated.

How to style the Tattersall check:
Tattersall shirt paired with Levi's are uber cool for Casual Friday or weekends. For other days, pair Tattersall shirt with solid trousers. A solid tie and a sport coat in the same hue could also be added for a more gathered look.

Graph check is the same pattern like the one you see on graph paper. Similar to Tattersall, only graph check patterns have thin stripes in single or non contrasting color that cross each other and forms even, small-sized checks. Graph check pattern can create a business casual look, or formal look, depending on the color. Just like Tattersall, people who wear graph check are perceived as traditional, versatile and sophisticated.

How to style the Graph check:
Graph shirt in muted color lines is our go to pattern when we are bored with solid white shirt. Wear Graph shirt with a solid suit, and solid tie and pocket square within the same hue for a traditional look. To create a more modern, playful, sophisticated look, try Graph shirt in bright color lines with a solid suit, mismatched patterned bow tie or mismatched patterned pocket square.

Windowpane

Windowpane pattern consists of crossing single-colored lines that form wide, evenly sized checks that resemble the panes on a window. Windowpane is quite similar to graph checks: the only difference is that the stripes are often thicker and further apart than used in graph checks. Windowpane pattern is most commonly found in suits and sports coats. People who wear this pattern are often perceived as straightforward and elegant.

How to style the Windowpane check:
Windowpane pattern is best paired with solids. White, gray and black usually work well with Windowpane pattern. Other than that, pair it with solids from the same hue. A splash of bright color can be used for a fun twist, although using too much of it may decrease the elegant effect.

Loud and proud, bright colors and spot on styling, this couple made a sartorial spread out of basic polos. With carefully selected quirky items, their coordinated outfit is perfectly bold for an engagement session. But it gets better: when broken down, each item would be casual enough for the couple to wear later on.

The polos take a backseat, tucked into the red and blue Rue 21 pants, belted neatly. Socks as cheerful as the pair and matchy-matchy grey toned shoes ground the look. On the solid colored bow ties topping the attires, we noticed it's no accident that the red and purple follow the embroidered logos on their shirts. Yup, the little details that matter!

About the Couple:

James and Brian met in the summer of 2010 via an online dating website, their first date was nothing overly fancy, they got to know each other over coffee at the local Dunkin Donuts. Soon after James left for the Disney College Program at Walt Disney World and told Brian that he would be coming back for him! They kept in contact the entire time, and soon after James returned to Wisconsin from Orlando they officially began dating. They both decided to move to Orlando, in June of 2010, Brian proposed to James in front of Cinderella castle in 2013 at Mickeys Very Merry Christmas party, which was perfect because that is their "happy place".

Well-Groomed Groom: Bali Destination Wedding

Bali? WHOA. It screams heaven to us. Apparently, for New Zealand & Australia’s A-list couple, Dane Rumble (a.k.a Kid Deft) and Nikki Phillips, it screams... Destination Wedding and so much more!

Commenting about the venue, here’s what Nikki said:
“Bali held many memories for both of us which is why this tropical yet rough oasis was picked at the destination."

And so Semara Uluwatu, a luxurious villa resort located in Bali, Indonesia was THE place for them. Perched high on top of a cliff, with clear blue sky, infinity pool, and gorgeous 180 degree panoramic view of the Indian Ocean as the perfect backdrop, their party went on from daylight to star-studded night. And the color scheme could not go far from…yes, you got it right…Blue.

The notched lapel, single buttoned, slim-fitting suit jacket that Dane wore was in pale blue, as if resembling the gentle ocean breeze. The suit jacket has thin navy blue trims on its hidden pocket openings that made it look modern and oh SO stylish!

The trims also matched his navy blue tie and trousers. Both the modern suit jacket and tapered trousers were from New Zealand’s iconic brand, Hallenstein Brothers.

Inside his jacket, Dane opted for a crisp white cotton shirt, creating an airy look. Cotton obviously was the perfect choice for the hot and humid, tropical Bali weather. And for an added modern touch and a little bling, Dane put on a stripe metal tie clip to his ensemble. We gotta say we really like how he picked such a fresh color combo that exactly describes a modern nautical wedding.

The moment we saw that blue faced masculine diver watch and the bold metal ring that Dane wore, we immediately knew those two accessories were well-thought-of statement pieces that every guy would envy. Yep, it certainly has that effect on us ;)

Now putting our envy aside..., Dane made a classic move by outfitting his groomsmen with Hallensteins suits in navy blue. And then, the same crisp white shirt, and brown leather shoes from one of Australia's trendy brand, Urge Footwear - tied their attires together. And to top it off, a white-colored rose boutonniere, and white pocket square were added. Just the right color to go matchy-matchy with the bride's attire.

No doubt, Dane has an impeccable taste, as the whole ensemble made him and his entourage looked both sharp and neat. And considering the brands of choice, he clearly is a proud Down-Under A-lister who supports local brands. Now that is a bold statement that deserves our thumbs-up!
