1 Corinthians 10:1-22 / Behavior, Affections, and Idolatry: The Seduction of the Heart

What comes first? Our behaviors or our beliefs? Paul explains that our behaviors, actions and decisions are a reflection of something deeper within us. They are an indicator of not only our feelings and affections, but of our beliefs. He looks at the root of temptation and uncovers idolatry. Idolatry is the root source of our corrupt affections, and it expresses itself in the decisions we make. But how we behave should be a reflection of our belief system and devotion to the Lord, not of idols. Paul’s admonition to Christians is not to just be good, but be wholly devoted to the Lord.

1 Corinthians 9:19-27 / All Things To All Men

What does it mean to surrender our rights and become "all things to all men"? Paul brings clarity to our rights and freedoms in how we interact with a lost world, and he pushes believers to remember the race we are in and why we run in it the first place. This life is not about us and we need to set our sights on things of eternal value instead of focusing on things that will not last.

Our relationship with God is based on love, and how we display this love to others matters. We know we have freedom in Christ, but our love for Him and others needs to trump this knowledge. Sometimes we need to lay down our rights to help others in their relationships with Christ. Whether we want to be or not, we are our brother's keeper, and we need to be aware of our actions and how they affect others.

1 Corinthians 7:25-40 / Rethinking Singleness

Paul speaks highly of singles because they have the freedom to focus entirely on Christ. But our culture has subtly and incorrectly defined singleness for us, leaving a bad connotation where Scripture does not. Our culture has elevated relationships and marred the potential for what singles can accomplish through the power of God, devaluing singleness rather than esteeming it. Christian singles need to see their lives now as a prime opportunity to be undivided and wholly devoted to the Lord.

1 Corinthians 15 / The Empty Tomb

In 1 Corinthians 3:15, Paul says this gospel he is speaking of to the people of Corinth is “of first importance.” As much as we hear about the death and burial of Jesus, we need to be reminded that on that first Easter Sunday, centuries ago, the tomb was empty. Christ died according to the scriptures, was buried according to the scriptures, and on the third day, rose again. He demonstrated His acceptable sacrifice to the Father, and was not only raised from the dead, but also ascended into glory, defeated death, defeated sin, and secured for us a position in glory based on His finished work. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is “of first importance” and is crucial to the true understanding of the gospel. By His resurrection, we have newness of life, and without the resurrection, we are, as Paul said, the “most to be pitied” and “our faith is in vain.”

Holy Week

If someone knew the end of their life was coming, the last few days of their life would probably be very intentional, filled with the things that were most important to them. What were the events that took place in the final week of Jesus’ life? What happened when He was betrayed? What did He go through when He was arrested in the garden? We will walk through a chronology of His final few days on earth and His death on the cross that fateful Friday.

1 Corinthians 7:12-16 / To The Rest...

..In verse 12, Paul says, “and now to the rest,” and he seems to be dealing with those who were married and then come to faith in Jesus Christ later. He recognizes the life altering decision that is, and the implications it creates. He gives them directions how to handle those situations: If a believing spouse leaves the marriage, pursue reconciliation, but if an unbelieving spouse leaves, let them go. But how do you know for sure who is a believer and who is not? Paul lays out a challenge for those who are in marital relationships to recognize the influence we have in them and the God-honoring stance that we can take of not just having good marriages, but great marriages for His glory.
