When I was a little girl I wanted to be an artist and begged my parents for lessons in painting, singing, ballet, tap, guitar and piano.

I settled for one art lesson, an oil paint set, a guitar that broke, tap shoes I grew out of and school choir when I was not allowed to play the drums in band.

I drew flowers on a thin canvas yet the oil paints were never used because child responsibilities discouraged me. Eventually I gave up and in the process I stuffed all the sadness long with my artistic desires.

For the next 20 or so years I would not make any art. In my twenties I saw a painting hanging on someone’s wall. He told me he had painted it and I said I wanted to paint too and he said “you are already an artist” and I said “no I’m not”.

My inner artist was beginning to awaken and be curious. However I was not ready to go beyond the natural creativity that was coming out in my business. I was even surprised I was being creative as I had been shut down for so long.

A few years later when I was 30 I remembered early childhood trauma and immediately started therapy for the first time. The following year I started a creative project with a friend. We created a product together as well as a t-shirt line. My artistic nature was starting to bloom a bit.

And then two years later after my ergonomic business was starting to take hold in my life and when I was feeling more stable and grounded I suddenly had the urge to paint. I signed up for a series of painting classes and I really enjoyed myself over those few months using watercolors, acrylics, and oils.

Over the next 20 years I made art on and off in various mediums yet there was always a deep hesitancy to create and I had no idea that there was anything I could do about it. I often drew instead of painting because it was easier. There was less of a production and there was virtually no mess or clean up. I suppose you could say I was a little bit lazy!

I enjoyed drawing with pencil, pen, markers and charcoal.

In 2008 I sold my ergonomic business that I had founded 17 years prior. And I proceeded to create a product that I had been developing over many years having to do with meditation, visualization and imagination. I thought this was it and I knew there was something more for me to explore.

It was a painful process trying to figure out what I wanted to do my life after all these years of being an entrepreneur. One day I accidentally started taking a series of creative actions even though I didn’t know why I was doing them. This included writing and drawing and something kept shifting in me without me understanding where it was leading to.

I remember a number of conversations with people over a few years about my artist status. I did not fully see myself as an artist and I was always going back and forth.

I thought the answer was outside of myself and that I would find it at a week-long conference however I wasn’t able to go because I could not afford it. And after this big disappointment I was lead in a certain direction in my thinking.

Finally I got it. I said to myself “oh my God I’m an artist”.

I started running into people and they would ask me what was new and I would innocently say to them “I’m an artist” and they would all laugh and say “I knew it”.

They all knew that I was an artist. They saw it in my choice of art and how I decorated my house. They saw the artist in me in the way I showed up in the world and how I dressed and spoke. They had known for a long time.

I was truly shocked. How could they know something that I did not see? I had denied my inner artist long enough and I started to draw.

After a couple of weeks I had a thick file of my pencil drawings and I took them everywhere I went. None of them were signed because I had not fully owned that I was an artist. I drew everywhere I went and often I’d start crying after working on my drawings for a while.

When that happened I would put all my supplies away and leave wherever I was because no way was I going to let anybody see me cry. I noticed that when I drew and went past my comfort zone I touched on those sad emotions that had been dormant in me for decades.

I was so proud of all my drawings. And then one day I realized I had not seen them for a while. It could have been a week when I realized that I had misplaced them. So I frantically searched everywhere I had been with them.

I started with my house by searching every room and closet and drawer and I even looked in my garage. Then I searched my car. And then I went to every location where I had my folder and my supplies and where I drew.

I talked to the managers of the stores and the cashiers and the janitors. Nobody saw my art. It completely went missing. It must have put on shoes and walked away.

This made me feel very uneasy. This was my art. A part of me was missing and I was extremely sad. After a few days I realized I was going to have to let go that art go over the next couple of weeks I cried my eyes out until there were no more tears.

And I had a sudden awareness that this had to happen because I had to cry out all of the sadness from my early childhood that had been stuffed in my body when I was not given the space to make art.

Two weeks later I suddenly felt very clear. I felt happy and ready for something new and was inspired to draw mandalas. After several completed drawings I was inspired to create a coloring book and I drew for hours every day.

Within 30 days I drew all the mandalas in pencil and added black marker. I scanned all the mandalas and created my coloring book and started selling them in PDF form.

Still searching for what was next for me a few months later I was inspired to create a new collection of free style mandalas that were a lot more playful and colorful. Over a few months I had created at least 75 drawings in various sizes.

I still have all of these drawings from both of these collections!!

Then one day it’s like somebody whispered into my ear and turned my head towards the several months in 2011 when I had taken all these creative actions.

And I saw that I had created a SYSTEM with specific PATHWAYS and PROCESSES that I could teach to others who felt creatively stuck, had a desire to awaken their inner artist and for more advanced artists to go deeper and evolve their art.

Shortly thereafter, the phrase AWAKEN THE ARTIST flowed into my awareness and I immediately purchased the domain and started my Facebook business.

I tested my concepts and saw that they worked, so I created my program and launched it. After coaching several people privately and in group format there was an emergency in my family.

My mother was diagnosed with dementia and needed my help so I moved into her house and took care of her for two years. That’s an entirely different story and because of the challenges I endured my Awaken The Artist work went even deeper and I created a self study program of several modules which I am in the process of creating an online school with.

My work has helped me stay strong and move through the challenges of my life time and again with greater ease.

My work is about helping my clients to release the wounds and traumas of their life that most often began in childhood. These traumas blocked them from their creativity and art and I help them to unravel the old stories and beliefs about their artistic nature so that they can be happier and free to live out their passions.

My work helps those who have become stuck from the challenges of life in this world that we live in.

My work is about consciousness and helping my clients raise their frequency so they can move forward in creative flow rather than in fear.

Art has always been so important in our world and it took me a long time to fully understand this.

Art makes up the fabric of our world (energetically and physically) and the future is going to be much more about art than ever before.

Art heals and especially when done intentionally and there’s going to be a much bigger demand for healing in the years to come as well as art.

More to come about this and how you can benefit in many ways.

Now, what is YOUR Art Journey? I would love to hear.

Since you are reading a blog about developing a new relationship with your creativity there is a good chance you are stuck right now. Either you have been completely stuck or you are ready to create from a deeper level of your being.

So here’s how you got stuck – a really simple idea.

1) You had some sort of artistic desire in your youth.

Maybe you wanted to paint and draw.
Maybe you wanted to sing and dance.
Maybe you wanted to play the piano and guitar.

(I begged for all of the above!)

2) Something happened that discouraged you from creating.

Such as:

You painted a picture and a teacher said you did it wrong.

You loved writing creatively and you were scolded.

Responsibilities kept you from creating even though you dreamed of it.

You were told there was not enough money for your art.

3) You began to doubt yourself and your ability to create.

Eventually you gave up and buried your artistic desire. You also buried the emotion you did not feel safe to feel because it just hurt too much. This was a means of survival.

So, the desire to be creative and an emotion (such as sadness) was buried in you.

4) You became stuck.

As an adult you may have assumed you are not creative and the truth is that your creativity lives inside – only you cannot not access it.

There are many other possible reasons for being creatively stuck.

Now the good news … How You Get Into Your Artistic Flow

You create and practice the art you want … writing, visual art, singing, dancing, etc.

The creation of your art frees the creative inner child.

Giving yourself permission to do the very art you were not given the opportunity to do in your youth heals and transforms you.

This “unsticks” you and allows you to develop a new relationship with your creativity. Healing and transformational!

I realize this may sound oversimplified and there is incredible depth to the work … AND I want you to know that getting creative is possible for you! I know because I have been consciously (and unconsciously) walking this journey for decades

And you can do that in many ways. Be on the lookout for a series of posts about the 7 pathways that I walked through to heal and transform my life!

“As soon as I saw the trapeze I knew I had to do it! I climbed to the top of the ladder and I was so scared I wanted to climb back down the stairs yet was told I had to step onto the platform. Then I was afraid to take the step from the platform at the same time I grabbed the handle because I knew there was no going back! After several minutes I finally took the step and flew over the net screaming and then I landed on the other side safely. I sat out for 30 minutes watching everyone else do the same thing. I was hooked. I played on the flying trapeze everyday for a week until my hands were sore and I performed in the circus show. It was great fun and a great expansion for me.”

That was a fun story about my flying trapeze experience over 20 years ago on a Club Med vacation (yes I admit I went to Club Med and had a blast! “Hands Up Baby Hands Up!” LOL)

Of course I know this is only a metaphor for letting go but it certainly shares the idea that letting go is freeing and it will take you places you never even dreamed of!

When we let go we give ourselves permission to take a deeper look at ourselves. Another way of saying this is that when we hold onto something we are not ready to look within at a deeper level.

You may already know what you are ready to let go of or at least have been contemplating. These include those behaviors and ways of being that you have been wanting to shift. Or you might be considering letting go of a relationship, job, career, your home or other material items.

Sometimes it is just so dang hard to let go. I know. It took me five years to let go of my house and this past year has been a journey of letting go. Life is filled with opportunities to let go and trust. The more you are willing to let go the more you are showing the universe your faith. And faith creates unimagined miracles.

WHAT IT WILL TAKE:

Plain and simple, letting go takes courage. Sometimes it calls for reaching deep inside and finding the courage we did not realize we have. The truth is that we have infinite amounts of courage always there for us to access.

A few years ago I walked through a very tough time and then one day I realized that my courage lived right inside of me. I could sense it, feel it, taste it and it surprised me. It was one of those aha moments when I realized that everything I ever needed lived inside of me.

Courage is at the top of the list. So consider all the times in your life you required courage and then multiply that by 10 and feel your courage RISE in you!

ACTION IDEAS TO BEGIN:

You’ve heard the phrase “The first step is the hardest?” Well lets simplify this process.

1) Make a list of all those thoughts you’ve been having about letting go.

2) Group them in different columns to separate the types of possible “things” you can let go of (behaviors, relationships and material possessions, etc).

3) Take it a step further and consider which of those you list will be easy vs “not so easy” because it will give you some perspective and help you get started.

4) Then choose something simple and LET GO.

5) Trust.

Once you begin letting go and notice the wonderful benefits that come from it you will feel more courageous to let go again. Letting go will become a way of life for you and each time you do it you open yourself to an avalanche of new good to flow into your life. Letting go sets up a series of serendipitous events (sometimes very subtle) and it leads you into the rest of the pathways I’ll be sharing with you.

I have so much more to share about letting go and for now I will just let go! This is one of 7 pathways I am sharing with you.

“Christmas Day 2010 – I remember it like it was yesterday. I was at a family member’s house and an argument had begun. I made a simple comment about sea salt – yes you heard me right! Someone interpreted my comment in a particular way and we had to take a break from the festivities and practically duke it out! I stood my ground. I shared what I needed to from my heart and it quieted everything down. I realized that when we share from our heart what can anyone say at that point.

Two weeks later I let go of a valuable material possession that a family member borrowed and would not give back. After another week or two I began feeling so much emotion run through my body that I found myself in a fetal position. It was the only way I could find some relief. I had been “taken back” to my youth to examine the chaos that had been ensuing all around me. There I was …. a 12 year young girl seeing reliving her childhood and it was extremely difficult to be there.

I spent a considerable amount of time ripping apart my thought processes from that time of my life that was still very much in control of my adult life at the time. I have come a long, long way in the past few years and had no idea just how valuable that time in discovery would be for me.

This pathway is about going back into your past and looking around from the perspective of your inner child.

You may have enjoyed accessing your creativity yet if a teacher or parent scolded you for being creative (maybe you drew on your desk, wrote poetry or were the class clown) then this is the time that you began shutting down.

You may have tried many times to create in your unique way and it just took so much of your energy to “fight the establishment” that you eventually surrendered to the discouragement. Your creative urges were buried and in some cases completely forgotten.

Now decades later you either do not create or you start projects and leave then unfinished. Yet you are finding it more difficult each day to ignore the nudge to fulfill your creative dreams.

Prepare yourself for some ahas and many realizations about your life and why things have occurred as they have. Awareness precedes the changes you are seeking.

WHAT IT WILL TAKE:

It is going to take PERSISTENCE to look back into your life and see what is ready to be revealed. The persistence is also about allowing yourself to be with the process. What is ready to be revealed to you will be. Allow yourself to be with what is.

Discovery is about exploration and your willingness to keep going!

ACTION IDEAS TO BEGIN:

The act of letting go in pathway 1 naturally brings you to discovery. You can also go on an exploratory mission.

1) Scan your childhood starting as early as you can remember. Trust that what you are ready to see will come to your awareness.

2) If there is a situation or experience you have always remembered or that pops into your awareness from time to time there is a reason for it. Pay attention to these memories. These are your points of exploration.

3) There is a great chance that you are not emotionally connected to these experiences and they have been lingering in your consciousness so that you could take a closer look. There is information from these experiences that will be very helpful to you now in discovering what created your creative blocks.

4) Create a short list. Then choose one or two of them to journal about. You will find that the journaling creates deeper awareness and peace.

5) You may begin to remember what you felt at that time. Allow yourself to FEEL. You are safe.

“OMG. What is wrong with me I was wondering? I better put away my art and leave right now so that nobody sees me crying!”

… It was October 2011 and I was fully immersed with my artistry. I bought a brand new drawing pad, sharpened my pencils and started drawing. I sat for hours and hours at a local coffee shop and was having a grand time! I produced a half inch thick folder of art. I took a few days off and realized I had no idea at all where my folder of art was!!

Total panic set in. I searched my car and my house and did not find anything. I spoke to everyone I could think of at the coffee shop to see if they had found my art. Nobody knew anything. Then I searched my car and house again and nothing! I was devastated! I cried my eyes out and then realized I was not only crying about the lost folder of art.

I was grieving my childhood and all the sadness I had to stuff deep inside my body when I was not given the opportunity to be an artist. It was now all coming to the surface so that I could heal. When it was all done I felt like a completely different person …

At the same time I was also helping my 90-year old mom a lot which had been triggering lots of childhood stuff…

So, lets talk about this releasing process that walks hand in hand with the discovering process.

Once you have done some digging around and started to uncover what was buried in the way of thoughts, feelings, experiences, etc you are going to be sitting with it for a bit. How long really depends on you and how much information you feel the need to gather on this particular leg of your journey.

Consider that you are in a cave after an archeological dig and now the dust (the mixture of emotions, memories) that was broken up is settling and you are beginning to breathe it all in. And now you are feeling deeply and this will bring upon a release of emotions. Hurray!!

Yes emotions in the way of healing tears that will bring you to the next pathway which you are going to love!

WHAT IT WILL TAKE:

It takes resilience for this work and you have plenty of it inside of you. Reach in and claim it.

The road with obstacles leads to smoother paths. You must learn to appreciate every day of your journey because you never know when a major insight is going to make itself known to you. It really is all good.

Take time for self care and the simple pleasures of life. This will give you the energy to invest in your inner work and for the fun and celebratory times.

Releasing is about never giving up. You must keep going forward even when the gravel road is bumpy! The paved road is just up ahead!

ACTION IDEAS TO BEGIN:

1) FEEL your feelings. The process of feeling your feelings as deeply as you can IS the process of releasing what has been stuck. This is the healing process. You are claiming yourself back.

2) Journal as often as you can. Writing will bring old thoughts to mind that will lead to strings of insights. You will understand so much more about your life and why and how everything has turned out the way it has.

3) Take walks in nature to help you connect to your true self and give you the space and time to relax.

4) Meditate and enjoy plenty of quiet time will allow your feelings to move as well and will increase your ability to relax in all kinds of situations.

5) Create art! Art moves what is stuck so that you can release easier. I will share much more about the healing benefits of creating art!

6) Get energy healing sessions from a professional and learn techniques you can do on your own such as EFT and Access Consciousness.

Remember, you are releasing what you did not feel safe to feel so long ago. Consciously choose to heal and transform your life and this will lead you to your creative passion. The time and energy you invest to do this work will be worth it. You deserve it.

The more you walk this process the more of your divine creative gift you will have access to. Allow yourself to continue to clear the way!

And today we move into what I like to call the “FUN pathways!!”

I stumbled upon a process that created an instant shift for me. And when I say shift I mean that my head turned and I knew something very powerful had changed inside of me. What followed shortly afterwards was the artist in me emerging and never looking back. I was able to Own the artist in me and it created a connection to my joy that was brand new in this lifetime for me!

If it can happen for me it can happen for you!

There are accomplishments in your past that you inadvertently placed on a shelf so that you could now take the time to look at and honor them.

Many of your accomplishments were forgotten because life was moving fast and you were already onto the next thing and you were not aware of the importance to honor yourself in this way.

WHAT IT WILL TAKE:

It is going to take AWARENESS to do this work.

You must become aware of your past successes that you did not honor. When you take a close look you’ll see a series of successful accomplishments that for whatever reason have been forgotten (or just put on the shelf for a while).

If you are here you have experienced success all along the way and do not let anyone say anything otherwise!

Plain and simple … Honoring that part of yourself equals valuing yourself.

Wondering what you can honor?

… your school work, art projects, student awards and honors, swim team ribbons, track and field wins, performances, report card, keeping your room clean, learning to drive, chores, being kind to a stranger, being creative with dressing yourself … honor anything you desire!

AND be sure to honor what you may not have been proud of because everything is part of who you have become.

Give value to yourself for every step of your journey. Be proud of who you have become because of your life experiences!

ACTION IDEAS TO BEGIN:

1) Take a piece paper, scan your life and write down what you remember.

2) Beginning in early childhood and all the way through high school (and beyond if you choose) look closely at your life to remind yourself of a string of accomplishments – (school, work extracurricular activities, sports, projects, lessons, recitals, etc).

3) Make a list of what calls out to you.

You do not have to work hard for this. This is a FUN activity and the actions you take now are going to make you smile and feel good!

How Did You Enjoy Reading About Awaken The Artist Pathway 4?

The processes of Letting Go, Discovering and Releasing takes you to the door of the room where your treasure box resides. After all these years you finally have access to your beautiful God given gems that you have been denying for so long.

You look inside and see the gem and reach in and take it to your heart and reclaim it.

WHAT IT WILL TAKE

It is going to take WILLINGNESS to reclaim and own this precious, divine part of yourself.

When you have the willingness to look through this open door and look at your gem and you now have a choice. You can say “yes” or “no” to yourself. You have conscious choice.

You have cleared the way for this and now you get to ask “Now what am I going to do?”!

So it will take a willingness to take the actions you wanted so long ago.

There is no more denying the little child inside who has been quietly knocking on the door your entire life to. If someone compliments you on your gift there is no more rolling of the eyes. You get to say a resounding “Thank you!”

You must be willing to acknowledge this beautiful child … YOU … to love and honor this and the adult part of yourself so deeply. Be ready to say …

“OMG! That’s my gem.
I am an ______________! I love to ______________!”

My statement would be “I am an artist and I love to draw!
(Fill in the blanks with your passion!)

And if you are already creating your type of art perhaps it is time to look deeper and see the new gem that is waiting for you.

Perhaps there is a new type of art ready for you to express. There is always an opportunity to go deeper.

When you are willing to open yourself up to deeper understanding of who you are as a divine being you are helping others to rise up and claim their gem too.

That is how we change the world. We change ourselves first. Then we serve as a model for others. Others can be your children, your parents and friends as well as your clients.

ACTION IDEAS TO BEGIN

Use your gift!

If you like to draw then draw.
If you like to write then write.
If you like to sing then sing already!
If you like to dance then do that!

I put my tap shoes on recently and started tapping on the tile and may even sign up for a class … something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.

So if you feel you are ready to own your gift buy some pads of paper and markers and/or paints, buy your tap shoes, get your piano tuned, etc. You get the idea!

Go for it and change your life!

WHAT IT WILL TAKE

It is going to take some GROUNDING to do this work. Yes I know the picture does not indicate grounding but she did jump off the ground!

Have you been riding high for a while and perhaps working long and hard hours? If so, there has probably been very little time to celebrate you because you have been so “on the go.”

Life has a way of slipping through our fingers. Create time for you by scheduling it in your calendar. Then stick to it. That is one way to get grounded.

ACTION IDEAS TO BEGIN

1) Get out your journal and keep track of what to celebrate. There is so much around you in this moment to celebrate … in addition to the past.

2) Pay attention to the intricate details of your life experience – capture everything you can – celebrate these. Ask what is here to celebrate that you have not celebrated. What is calling out to you from your past?

3) Share a story about what is happening in your life. Share what you just did.

4) Be authentic and transparent with your community and allow yourself to take some spotlight in the world.

5) Take celebratory action. Jump up in the air, wave your hands, shout YES, plan a dinner party, play.

6) Grab some friends and ask for help with your celebrating. They will help raise your vibe and get the celebratory feeling in your cells. The deeper it is the easier it will be to celebrate you

Your celebration can be private too. In fact it is necessary to practice this because most of our celebration of ourselves is private anyway. You do not have to tell anyone unless you want to and when you do know that they are celebrating with you and raising your vibe.

Now go and Celebrate You!

WHAT IT WILL TAKE:

It is going to take TENACITY to do this work.

When I owned my big ergonomics company, I had the idea to create my very own print catalog and I thought it was going to be fast and easy. Each day I walked into my office thinking “today is going to be the day I finish the design” and each day I realized that there was so much to do. I wanted it to look just right! It took one solid month working from morning to night including the weekends. I barely even saw daylight and I was so excited to get started in the morning wondering just how far I would be at the end of the day. No matter what I kept going. I immersed myself in the design of my catalog and took my creativity to another level.

The same thing happened when I was inspired to create my mandala coloring book. I had no idea it was going to take me a month and I just kept taking it one day at a time. I knew that once I finished I would be proud of my accomplishment. And I was and when I think about it right now it still makes me smile!

You must give yourself the time to immerse yourself in your creativity. You must be persistent practically everyday. Give yourself whatever it is going to take to embody your creative gift. Schedule time to create on a regular basis. And do it!

You may also want to schedule in some rest breaks because once you start creating at deep levels you may forget to eat!

ACTION IDEAS TO BEGIN:

Consider what you want to create. You may already have an idea that has been calling out to you!

Perhaps there is a collection of poetry you want to write.
Or maybe a collection of drawings ready to come out of you.
Or maybe you’d like to decorate cakes!!! Or paint. Or sew
If you are a dancer maybe you are ready to practice your moves!

Now is the time!

1. Carve out time in your calendar.

2. Buy the supplies you will need. Paper. Paint. Pencils. Markers. Material. Icing!

3. Create a comfortable, cheery space. I used to share this information with my clients when I was an ergonomics consultant! Clean and clear your space. Repair what is broken. Replace your chair or desk so that you can create in comfort. Open the blinds to let the light in.

4. Make your physical space so inviting you will love going in there everyday. Enhance the space with your works of art. Frame and hang your poetry, drawings, paintings, photography … whatever you have created that will feel good to have around you. Time to go pull all of your artwork out of the closet now! You may also want to decorate with art of others that you feel inspired by. Create a bright and cheery space.

5. Give yourself permission to be inspired by YOU! And please do not let anyone tell you why you cannot do what your heart is pulling you towards. When I bought my house I let my friend and interior designer talk me out of buying a drawing table for my living room. This space was bright and airy and I envisioned creating art in that room. Yet I was so impressionable I let her discourage me. In the 12 years that I was in that house and I never bought that drawing table. Always listen to your heart. Always listen to your intuition antique inspired action.

6. Immerse yourself in your art. Keep going as far as you can go and as deep as you can go and you will know when it is time to rest and recharge . The more you allow yourself this creativity time the easier it will become because you will be having so much fun.
