Earthquake once more

I cannot believe there're so many earthquakes within one year. This time its magnitude is 4.1. What kind of place is California? I've got to graduate as soon as possible and leave this place.

8:39pm PDT, I was at home thinking about why segmentation fault occurs in a computer program when openmp is turned on. Then a "segmentation fault" occurred in the earth. This earthquake was not very strong, but I was still scared and ran out of the house. The transverse and longitudinal waves shook for about one second, respectively. And there's an interval of about 3 seconds between them. Now the magnitude is updated to be 4.7.

Yesterday I ran into an auto show in Aldrich Park when I was passing by campus. I still don't have feelings for cars. I only like my own car.

The main building of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met) is located on one side of Central Park. The ancient Egypt collections in the museum are the most impressive part to me. Thousands years ago, Egyptians made all these colorful carved stones, potteries, hemp fabrics, jades, etc. They are absolutely fascinating and not a bit worse than those that were made in ancient China.

Fork artist in front of the Met. Everything is made of forks.
I'm mostly interested in the Möbius strip.

[Northeastern US][D2] Central Park

With all the bald trees, Central Park in the winter looked so ruined. I believe it'd be green and live in the summer. Clusters of squirrels, ducks, and birds are still happily dancing around. It's very precious that there exists such a pure land without business pollution in the center of Manhattan.

The Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art are our major plans of the 2nd day. Since we had walked by the 5th Avenue on the 1st day, we chose to took the 6th Avenue to go to the Central Park.

On the 6th Avenue, there are a lot of headquarters of huge companies, such as the ones of Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Hilton, etc. They are all expensive skyscrapers.

Getting down from Rockefeller Center, we had another hard time trying to get through the huge crowd to go to Times Square. On each new year's eve, a huge number of crazy people go here for the new year countdown. In my opinion, on new year's eve, it's a real pleasure to have a gourmet meal with lobsters, take a hot shower and then go to bed early at snowy Boston, which is a topic I'll mention later.

It's not safe to stay late outside. We went back to hotel after quickly finishing dinner at McDonald's.

When we got out of MoMA, the sky was dark but lights were everywhere in the city. It's so crowded in such a big city. We were bouncing back and forth in the people ocean and could hardly move by ourselves. Even in China didn't I see so many people at once. Is the US population really only 300 million? It took a long time to finally reach Rockefeller Center. Taking the elevator to the top, we got a chance to overlook New York at night. Facing clusters of skyscrapers decorated by splendid lights all over the space, I had to redefine the phrase "big city" in my mind.

[Northeastern US][D1] Took the subway to China town

In the afternoon we took the subway to the old China town in Manhattan to have lunch, after which we walked around the China town and the nearby little Italy. And then we went back to the MoMA to see van Gogh's painting gallery.

I like this picture in the subway very much. The author is Philippe Lechien.
Taking a look at his website, I find a lot of his woks very interesting.

Having turned into the 53rd Street and passed by some street artists, we arrived at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

There's a huge crowd in the MoMA. On the first floor, a window was showing all sorts of red posters, fliers, pokers, etc. from Chairman Mao's era. Oh, man. These things were treated as "modern art" by Americans.

It took a long time to buy the tickets and deposit our backpacks before we could finally get in. Among so many art works, I was able to appreciate only a few. Most of them really suck, in my opinion. Some steel wires were randomly put together and counted as art. On the 2nd floor, some subjectless, if not disgusting, animations were being projected on the walls with some weird noise. Man they could call that art. One thing really worth seeing was van Gogh's painting gallery. Before, I hadn't liked van Gogh's paintings much, but after this trip, his paints looked more and more amazing to me.

[Northeastern US][D1] 5th Ave and other street views in Manhattan

Tudor Hotel was located at the crossing of the 2nd Avenue and the 42nd Street. We headed west and then lounged on the 5th Avenue. Cops were everywhere on the street. I don't know if walking there was safe or not. The roads were so narrow that when a police car went off its siren, no one could give way, so that the police car had to take an opposite direction lane. More surprisingly, a fire engine's siren was going off at a crossing, all other cars kept going as if they didn't hear it. Unlike in Southern California, once a siren of an emergency vehicle goes off, all other cars give way to it immediately.

On the 5th Avenue we saw a lot of buildings which were buried in the movie Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), including the Grand Central Terminal, the New York Public Library, and the St. Patrick's Cathedral. However, we couldn't find the Queensboro Plaza subway station, which seemed to be not in Manhattan.

[Northeastern US][D0] Fly to New York City on Christmas

Early morning on Christmas day, taking off from John Wayne Airport at Santa Ana (GMT-8), transferring from Minneapolis (GMT-6), we flew to New York City (GMT-5).

It was in the evening when we arrived in New York City. We lost 3 hours due to timezone difference. New York wasn't as cold as I had expected. We went out of the airport and waited for a taxi. This felt like in a big city in China. The taxi was big and comfortable and had TV and GPS in it. As expected in a big city, shiny lights come from skyscrapers and huge bridges. After a long ride, we arrived at our hotel Tudor Hotel in Manhattan.
