MIAMI, Oct. 6, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- A study conducted by the University of British Columbia demonstrated that commercial fragrances containing certain essential oils also have antibacterial benefits. The study, underwritten by Doctor Aromas, showed that several fragrances could kill microorganisms tested at different concentrations in a laboratory setting. The study suggests that commercial fragrances represent a potential new approach to control pathogens in enclosed and crowded areas, especially those related to airborne diseases.

According to a recent study, the global market for aromatizing fragrances was estimated at $US 6 billion in 2018 and is projected to increase to US $8 billion by the end of 2026. The popularity of these products has increased because of their aromatherapy applications, as people seek to enhance their physical and psychological conditions while neutralizing unpleasant odors.

"With people spending much of their time at home due to a growing work-from-home culture, we have found they have placed a premium on creating an optimum home environment conducive to work and relaxation depending on the space. Home fragrances have become an essential ingredient to this end," said Marcelo Zelicovich, founder of Doctor Aromas. "The fact that essential oils derived from nature also have anti-bacterial agents is an added benefit that we felt needed to be studied further."

The study, led by noted researchers Hagar Bach and Horacio Bach, medical faculty of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, tested 25 commercial fragrances on a panel of human pathogenic bacterial and fungal strains. The findings showed that three single fragrances were able to inhibit the growth of six bacterial strains, whereas all fragrances tested showed antifungal activity, including mold that grows on various surfaces. The fragrances that showed an increase in antibacterial activity in the highest number of bacterial strains contained menthol and citral, broadly reported as antibacterial compounds. Fragrances exhibiting antifungal activity can be attributed to the presence of geranial and neral, which have also been known to have antifungal compounds. Of particular significance is the fact that two fragrances increased the secretion of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 by an unknown mechanism. In addition, these fragrances contained D-limonene and linalool, which have shown anti-inflammatory activity, an important finding particularly for individuals who have asthma.

"Future efforts should be focused on the proper distribution of these fragrances to sanitize potential disseminators of microbial pathogens such as air conditioning units in shopping centers, hospitals, or any place where a conglomeration of people might be affected by these microbes," said Horacio Bach, a clinical assistant professor of the University of British Columbia's Division of Infectious Diseases, and co-author of the study.

SARASOTA, Florida - - The 2020 SarasotaMOD Weekend, presented Nov. 6-8 by the Sarasota Architectural Foundation (SAF), will honor the art and architecture of Carl Abbott FAIA. Abbott, the internationally renowned modern architect, also will be celebrated in two exhibitions which open MOD Weekend: “Carl Abbott: Architecture for Nature” at the Sarasota Museum of Art and an exhibit of his sculpture at the Art Center Sarasota.

“Carl Abbott has been an icon in Sarasota and the worldwide architectural community for more than 50 years. We are thrilled to partner with him in this year’s programming and look forward to welcoming visitors to our latest MOD Weekend,” said SAF Board Chair Anne Essner.

SarasotaMOD Weekend is known for letting visitors immerse themselves in the architecture of the Sarasota School movement. With COVID-19 in mind, SAF has redesigned MOD events to meet CDC guidelines. Safety considerations include timed entries, smaller groups, open-air venues and mandatory face coverings. This year, MOD will feature a novel array of tour options, including walking, driving and -- new this year – kayaking. Abbott has personally curated the driving tour itineraries to showcase a range of his residential and commercial projects. New this year: 10 short videos, premiering during the driving tours, that capture Abbott as he explains his creative process for chosen projects.

“Sarasota in the 1950s was one of the most important places in the world for architectural creativity, where the greatest design movement of the day came together,” said Abbott. “There’s a reason a handful of communities in the world stand out for architectural innovation. SarasotaMOD Weekend kicks off with a virtual presentation, In/Formed by the Land: Carl Abbott’s Architecture for Nature, online Friday, Nov. 6. Carl Abbott FAIA speaks about his career, his influences and his projects in a recorded conversation with Anne-Marie Russell, Executive Director of the Sarasota Art Museum and curator of the Museum’s Carl Abbott exhibition. MOD Weekend continues on Saturday, Nov. 7. Salute the Sun at a “Yoga Under the Umbrella” class to be held around the Umbrella House pool. Then hit the road with the first of two new self-guided driving tours offering exterior access to some of Abbott’s favorite projects. “Carl by Car” North will be offered on Saturday; “Carl by Car” South will run on Sunday (each route ticketed separately). Admission includes a map, descriptive booklet and digital access to project videos that may be viewed on smartphones or tablets with provided Wi-Fi hot spots.

A MOD favorite takes center stage on Saturday and Sunday with a reimagined self-guided walking tour of Sarasota’s mid-century modernist enclave, Lido Shores. This “Gulf and Gardens” tour features exteriors of renowned Sarasota School homes with gulf, bayou and bay views. Of note is the Putterman Residence on Pansy Bayou, long considered one of Abbott’s masterpieces. A special ticket bundle adds an interior tour of Paul Rudolph’s celebrated Umbrella House – “one of the five most remarkable houses of the mid-20th century.”

Sunny Isles Beach, Fl. Labor Day Weekend 2020 is progressing quietly in the Sunny Isles Beach area.
At the beach this morning, only a few early walkers were enjoying the view and pleasant weather. Just the presence of new famous faces meeting their recently acquired properties at Armani-Casa and The Ritz Carlton was the only news in town.
Even the boat ramps look barely active, compared to other years. Perhaps a symptom of the COVID 19 crisis and a silent ongoing recession, generating lack of funds to keep boats in the water for many.
"We use to have long lines of vehicles towing boats on Collins waiting for a turn at the ramp in Labor Day. This morning, streets are almost empty." commented one of the neighbors at the Dog Park at the beach in 158th st.

Curfew not affecting daily life.

A Countywide curfew for Miami Dade remains in place from 10 PM to 6 AM, not affecting daily life at all. Supermarkets very well stocked for the weekend. No large events or public meetings. And in fact, not even "party" noises were detected in the Saturday evening.
The area seems to slowly adapt to this "stay at home" rhythm, in order to prevent COVID 19 spreading.

Golden Beach, FL. Crews working extra time in town cleaning up after a waterspout touched land and became a tornado in Golden Beach today.
"It came out of nowhere," said a beachgoer that observed from Sunny Isles.
Pool furniture was tossed into the ocean while trees came down blocking traffic southbound Ocean Drive.
Alex Diaz, City Manager informed that there were no reports of damaged buildings.

Sunny Isles Beach, Fl. A group of 80 top Miami real estate agents vowed to apply a “well showing” new standard for all listings.

“I was following in Singapore by January how they were dealing with Coronavirus, so we started to apply here some wellness measures that we called “Well Showing concept”, since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis” said Fernando Pettineroli, a Sunny Isles Beach listing agent with Dezer Platinum Realty.

The “Well Showing” new protocol is based on three step showings: First, listing agents provide unbranded “virtual-showings”.
