"God is a tender pervert, and the angels are voyeurs" is the first line on Momus' 1988 album Tender Pervert. The opening song places God firmly in the role of pervert. Like a demented Rembrandt painting brought to life, Nick Currie vividly describes his aforementioned protagonist as he masturbates in the heavens, his sperm spewing across the Earth as a sort of cruel joke upon us mortals and "the way we hold out coffee cups, the way we choose our word".

Much Like God himself, Curry populates his album world full of lurid characters. With each song the listener is brought into the twisted and often brilliant mind of a dirty insecure Englishman. Some of these characters you might meet include the following. We have the closeted gay figure dancing team in "Love on Ice" who must deal with their repulsion of the opposite sex, their PR agent's cocaine habit, AIDS tabloid rumors and of course landing the perfect figure eight. There is the bitter young man of "The Homosexual" who uses his feminine charms (and advise from a homosexual gynecologist) to tease and fuck the wives and girlfriends of the men who mock his limp wristdness. Need something a little more political? Then you can hear the rise and fall of the protagonist of "I was a Maoist Intellectual" I won't even attempt to explain where that one goes.There is a bit of relief mid-album with the coupling of Ice King and Right Hand Heart. Two romantic and sweet but still fucked up love songs. He can do it all.

Synth-pop has often been utilized for it's sensual elements. Warm Leatherette and the like. Albums prior to this one found Momus writing magnificently twisted affairs, but ones that had a tendency to ramble on and becoming more of spoken word piece than actual songs. A fine example of this would be his debut Circus Maxmus which includes exasperating sex and violence filled yarns all about figures in the Bible. Here using the medium of "synth pop" has helped him to focus his songwriting energy and create what stands as still as one of if not his best work. Why is it out of print?

It's not hard to see why Momus has never received the accolades in America as he has in places like Japan. His music questions authority, sexual convention, intellectualism and most importantly the dark side of human desire. I am a fan of Momus's entire discography which spans nearly thirty years and almost every release finds Momus inventing, reworking or augmenting a style or convention and making it his own. Momus is a pervert and he is not afraid to let you know. I am not just speaking of pervert in the sexual sense, but also in the musical.

Momus has no respect for pop conformity or stupidity. It may isolate him from the majority of America (if they even had a chance to hear him)but time will show Nick Currie to be one of our generations greatest musicians.

It has always baffled me how Athen's Madeline hasn't made it to the ranks of the indie elite singer songwriters. She is popular and has been constantly touring since the release of her brilliant debut Kissing and Dancing but hasn't made that break through into the minor major league like some comparable artist (St. Vincent, Norah Jones,Regina Spector) Madeline's voice is beautiful. Crystal clear yet still emotive, lacking the hollow theatrics of some lesser performers. I would listen to her if she just did covers, but luckily she is also a very talented songwriter. Her songs are smart and confident with out being smug which can be tough. Her most recent work has become much richer musically with the aide of a bigger band. This new direction seems to have interfered with some elements of the songwriting that keeps out of print copies of Kissing and Dancing close to a select few hearts. It is still strong but some of the loose and abstract qualities shown on those earlier recordings seem to have been tamed in favor of the "band" sound. Which while a tad disappointing is cool by me and it seems like a natural progression. Her most recent album came out on Orange Twin records. Should be a good show.

Looks like Nick Foreman of Dust Congress will be hosting day shows in his intimate show space/living room at the convenient corner of Sycamore and Carroll in Denton for the duration of the NX35 festival. The shows are scheduled to take place mainly during the off-hours "in time for everyone to make it to whatever nighttime shows [you] might be playing/attending."

The lineups will include acts that are playing NX35, acts that were supposed to play NX35, and acts that would never play NX35 even if they were offered a billion dollars and a lifetime supply of cupcakes.

Apparently the free day shows are not without some controversy, as Day Bow Bow head honcho and NX35 organizer, Jaime-Paul Falcon is seen commenting on the Facebook invite (log in to see it)

"Way to show complete disrespect for the venues and volunteers that put this festival together."

Now, Falcon is certainly entitled to his opinion as we all are, but I find it an odd stance to take considering his own involvement in a couple of SXSW day shows, which, while being completely unavoidable, have long been a thorn in the side of the SXSW establishment and are generally considered a nuisance and a distraction by those volunteers and organizers.

Perhaps this can all be argued away by simply viewing SXSW as so huge that it matters not if you step on the toes of anyone involved. Personally, I've never understood why anyone considers such additional activity a "threat," when these types of gatherings often just help raise the profile and overall public opinion of the "main event," and drawing attendees that might not have participated otherwise. Non Compete Clauses be damned, especially those with unreasonable time frames-- such agreements don't usually stand up in Texas courts anyways, or at least that's what I'm told by our expert legal department. It seems that things have been working out quite nicely for Bryce Isbell as of late. After spending a couple of years moving away from his roots with Matthew and the Arrogant Sea and quietly developing his craft as an electronic musician via countless self released albums that probably didn't garner much of an audience beyond friends and acquaintances, Isbell recently signed on with Lefse Records subsidiary Waaga under the moniker Fur, and in the process has managed to attract the attention of Pitchfork, Gorilla vs Bear, 20 Jazz Funk Greats and other notable websites, thanks in no small part to his perfectly timed collaboration with newly minted indie celeb Alan Palomo. Now poised to begin reaching an audience outside of North Texas for the first time, Isbell has delivered Witches, a difficult to classify yet mostly accessible full length record that represents a notable leap forward for Isbell as an artist, although not in the manner that one might have assumed based on the backstory.

A lot of what you'll probably read and hear about this record will lead you to believe that its somehow a part of the nebulous "glo-fi" or "chill wave" movement, and in a limited sense this notion is accurate-- the much noted collaborations with Alan Palomo and Coyote Clean Up, the dreamy, vaguely dancey production values, the label's own association with the genre-- all of it seems to indicate at first glance that Isbell's work as Fur should be compared side by side with that of Washed Out, Neon Indian and Memory Tapes, and it wouldn't be entirely off base to do so given the personal tie-ins and vague stylistic similarities between the three. For Fur's label, this PR narrative might be beneficial from a short-term business perspective, but just as most artists despise being packaged as part of any "scene," particularly one birthed entirely by music critics, so too should labels be weary of allowing their groups to be pigeonholed into temporarily lucrative genres that may or may not provide such benefits as "having your song in a car commerical" and "appearing on Jimmy Fallon," because at the end of the day, this album's strengths lie in being something other than the latest entry in yet another soon to be forgotten fad, even if lazy musical criticism might ensure that it ultimately suffers that fate anyway.

Of course, this isn't to say that Witches is somehow superior to the debuts from Neon Indian or Memory Tapes, because it isn't. However, these comparisons end up amounting to little more than apples and oranges at the end of the day, because in spite of the surface level similarities in recording techniques and the general haziness of the three works as a whole, Witches is clearly constructed out of completely different material than those records (just as the other two are quite different from one another as well), and its this quality that makes this record worth considering on its own merits.

Almost right from the onset, knowledgeable fans of European electronic music will likely be compelled to recall early 90's Artificial Intelligence era Warp Records material and groups such as The Orb, while "indie" rockers might spot the significant Boards of Canada influence that pervades throughout. For the first half of the record, Isbell's backwards glances to these sources serve as the building blocks for much of what is going on, although it certainly isn't a paint-by-numbers recreation, and thankfully so. Things get started with a striking Klaus Nomi sample on opener "Faces," and although one can tell that Isbell has certainly allowed such things to enter into his frame of artistic reference, the track, despite being quite solid, serves as a false start for the record as whole considering that its clarity and boldness stand almost polar opposite of what Isbell attempts to do on the rest of the album's high points-- namely, to craft textures and play with moods.

A bit later, "Friends of Friends" truly sets the scene with stabbing, minimal beats that sound like a more organic and far less dance driven version of something that could be found on an early Luomo recording coupled with swirling, pulsating white noise and treated sampled vocals that give the track a loose, psychedelic feel that ends up serving as one of the more adventurous and rewarding moments to be found throughout. Directly following are the two standouts "Lackadaisical" and "Black Castles," with the former featuring what is easily the record's most memorable refrain, reminiscent of some strange mix between Enigma's "Sadness, Part 1" and the music from those Time Life "Mysteries of the Unknown" commercials (in a good way), while the latter, a collaboration with Neon Indian's Alan Palomo, provides the record's most overall accessible moment with a beat driven backdrop and icy, dreamy layers of synth that compliment the track's build up-break down-build up structure quite effectively, resulting in a nearly danceable downtempo track that has a lot more in common with the rest of the material on this record than with anything Neon Indian has released.

Elsewhere, Isbell successfully attempts a more straight up and pop leaning lo-fi take on early 90's ambient techno on "Haunted," takes an ill advised dubstep influenced detour on "Hidden," gets into some dizzying, Autechre influenced beats to mostly acceptable effect on "Blood," and dabbles in some shimmering, post-techno Tangerine Dream-like ambient synths on "Sleep."

The genre hopping on the record's latter half might seem a bit confusing at first, but in and of itself its not an issue-- groups as diverse as Yo La Tengo and LCD Soundsystem have built careers out of self conscious record geek nods to genre, and Isbell for the most part seems to have the artistic sensibility and grasp of history to try new (old) things and do them fairly well. However, there are several clear missteps throughout, such as meandering closer "Cheer Fool," and the sounds good on paper but falls flat on the dance floor "Tunnels", but even more than that, the all over the place feel of the album's second half erases much of the core and continuity of Witches' noticeably stronger first half, leaving the listener to feel that Isbell might have been slightly less than sure of what he wanted to do and where he wanted to take his sound, thus slowing the early momentum and resulting in a record that often feels more like a mix tape or a collection of singles than an actual full length record. Again, this isn't an inherently negative quality, but its one that certainly lessens the potency of Witches' strongest moments.

This kind of stylistic overreaching is an understandable mistake that often plagues young ambitious musicians, and the most compelling stretches on Witches more or less make up for a lot of these shortcomings. In fact, even the stumbles are at least a positive indication that Isbell is willing to take chances with his work, and many of them might have ended up being more effective within the context of a different record, even if a few just simply miss the mark.

Thankfully, Bryce Isbell has not jumped on a bandwagon here-- there is little to nothing on Witches that bares any audible resemblance to the psychedelic bedroom dance pop of Neon Indian or the house influenced lo-fi of Memory Tapes other than slight, passing moments, and the starting point of Isbell's musical influences is really quite different from the start. Instead of coming off as an also-ran glo-fi record, Fur's debut is a mostly effective study of electronic genres, complete with all of positives and negatives that often come with such an endeavor. It's less than earth shattering to be sure, but Witches indicates that Bryce Isbell has the capacity to do some interesting things, and it certainly requires that we all keep our eyes on what he attempts to do next.

Night Shadow - The Square Root of Two (Spectrum Stereo, 1968)

I suppose it's time for a break in the string of live recordings that I've been posting recently. I know it's a week late, so I apologize to everyone that is crying over the fact there was no Not New Music last Tuesday.

The Square Root of Two is a truly rare find when it comes to records from the early days of psychedelic music; a great ALBUM. While it's certainly nowhere near the level of genre defining lps like The Piper at the Gates of Dawn or Easter Everywhere, it is a far cry from the utter trash that you find listening to full lengths from 90something percent of "Nuggets era" groups.

Hailing from Atlanta, Night Shadow's roots go back to the late 1950s garage band The Cavaliers. The band continued through the early 60s despite various lineup and name changes, releasing 45s that ranged stylistically from 50s garage to r&b to British Invasion influenced rock. The group finally seemed to find some direction in 1966 under the leadership of new vocalist Phil Ross, releasing the '60 Second Swinger' 45 as Little Phil & the Night Shadows. It was around this time that Ross worked at a college radio station, giving him access to many of the new psychedelic records that would end up being a huge influence on the Night Shadows during the recording of their first, and only, full length lp.

Square Root bears all the hallmarks of late 60s psych: fuzzed out guitars, fucked up vocal effects, a crazy album cover and a general feeling of lsd saturation throughout. It's when you peel away all the layers of studio trickery that you find what seperates this record from so many others from the period. Raising this album above the status quo is the fact that most of the songs here would be great garage tunes without the psychedelic treatment, which gives a decided advantage over the dozens of acts that seemed to have the approach of burying their mediocre songs under a distracting veil of effects and hoping that people wouldn't notice.

This is a vinyl rip from the 1979 Hottrax reissue and features a slightly different song sequence and a couple of alternate mixes than what appeared on the original. Hopefully this gem will get a quality reissue in the near future as aren't many originals around anymore. You can expect to pay around $1000 if you can find one, even the 1979 reissue and late 90s bootleg lp can easily fetch over $100 in the collector's market. Enjoy!

One final word, about last night's show: I was extremely impressed with the Kessler, even in its current unfinished state; it's an absolutely stunning building, both inside and out. I was really pleased to hear that the organizers reached the intended goal, and that everyone involved was strong enough to put on such an event under such short notice and amid such terrible circumstances.

I also want to add that Daron Beck's impromptu vocal performance (along with Will Kapinos on guitar) of "I Put A Spell On You"
was one of the most touching and powerful moments I've ever witnessed at a show. Unbelievable.

Very solid lineup at one of the most consistent DIY spaces in the area over the past couple of years. Say what you want about Bosque Brown's latest record, but I've always thought they were one of the few truly solid indie folk groups in the area. Tre Orsi's national profile has also just increased quite a bit thanks to their inclusion in Matador's mostly Austin compilation Casual Victim Pile. And this is no way directed at Tre Orsi's music, but man-- is that the best Austin has to offer these days? This mostly brainless lifestyle garage music? I've said it before and I'll say it again-- Denton has more solid bands that Austin right now. Hands down, actually.

The Clientele | Vetiver | This Old House (Granada)
The Clientele are a band we interviewed here several years ago, back when they were getting ready to play in front of about 30 people at Hailey's. Now they're headlining the much larger Granada Theater after several very consistent and enjoyable records. I still don't think anything touches "Suburban Light," their early singles compilation, but that's only because its one of my favorite records of the past ten years or so. Highly recommended.

Nervous Curtains | Darktown Strutters (Good Records)

Never was a fan of The Paper Chase, the band or the movie. In fact anytime I hear The Paper Chase or see one of their shirts I kinda want to throw up. Nervous Curtains seems to be much more up my ally after sampling the myspace tracks. Hope it's good cause the album cover is pretty cool. So Darktown Strutters, when is your album release going to be? Word on the street says it will definitely drop before summer. We are all waiting.

Akron/Family sound alot like Matthew and the Arrogant Sea but I think MATAS sound much better. And lookey here they are on the same bill so you can decide for yourself. Also might be a good show to go to if you are working on picture book about long unkept beards.

For those who don't know, A Storm of Light is a Neurot Recordings band from Brooklyn, NY fronted by Josh Graham of the terrifyingly powerful Neurosis, and although I hadn't had a chance to listen to them until recently, I've been digging what I've heard from them so far. In any event, they'll be playing at Rubber Gloves this evening (Wednesday the 24th), and our friends at RGRS were nice enough to give us a pair of tickets to give away to one of you. My favorite thing about The Lemonheads is probably the fact that 1992's It's a Shame About Ray is a mostly quiet indie folkpop album that happens to be about smoking crack with a supermodel. Sounds like a good movie roll for Joe Dallesandro or something, doesn't it? Anyway, I like that record a lot more than I probably should, although it might be mostly for nostalgic reasons considering how dated it sounds every time I put it on, which is at least a few times a year. Oh well, its better than Alice in Chains and a bunch of the other shit that was on the "college charts" at the time. (SR)
