Could Bacon be the team’s top tackler at a different position in 2013?

It’s possible. Bacon spent the majority of spring practice at free safety and finished atop the post-game spring depth chart at that position.

Another solid season could impress voters for the Lott Trophy. Bacon, who will be a junior in the fall, was one of 42 players named to the trophy’s watch list.

Bacon’s 136 tackles in 2012 were the ninth-most in a single season by an Army player. He ranked eighth in the country in total tackles last season.

Trent Steelman’s lifelong dream was to hear his name called during the NFL draft .

While that dream wasn’t meant to be Saturday, the four-year Army starting quarterback landed on his feet in a big way.

Steelman, Army’s all-time leader in rushing touchdowns, is headed to the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens.

Dave Lee, Steelman’s agent, said his client signed a three-year free-agent contract with Baltimore.

“Their intention is to bring him to training camp and compete,” Lee said. “He’s not a tryout player. He’s signed with the Ravens right now. A three-year contract.”

Steelman couldn’t be reached for immediate comment. But, Steelman posted on Twitter, “I am apart of the worlds BEST organization #USARMY and now apart of the worlds best sports organization #BaltimoreRavens!!!!”

Baltimore will try Steelman out as a slot receiver and safety. He is also expected to play special teams.

“He’s going to fit in perfectly,” Lee said. “They are going to love his work ethic, his intelligence and his discipline. They are one of the few teams that would actually reward him for that. I just think it’s the perfect fit for him. It’s a great place to go.”

Baltimore’s mini-camp for draft picks and rookie free agents begins Thursday.

The Ravens interest in Steelman began after his performance in the East-West Shrine in January. Steelman scored the East’s lone touchdown from a wildcat formation, snapped on the extra point and played special teams. A Baltimore scout was scheduled to attend Steelman’s pro day on March 20 at West Point but had to cancel due to a family issue.

The Ravens were in contact with Steelman’s camp during the seventh round. Baltimore had two picks and selected Elonwide receiver Aaron Mellette and California cornerback Marc Anthony.

“He was a priority free agent so we had an idea at the end of the draft what was going on,” Lee said. “I already knew this was a perfect fit as long as they didn’t draft another player like him.”

“Just their ‘corporate culture” the way they are and what they expect out of their players, he’s just going to thrive in that system in my opinion.”

The NFL will be on the clock starting Thursday night.

Will a team pull the trigger on Army’s Trent Steelman with one of the 254 picks in the NFL draft?

Steelman, a four-year starting quarterback who pro scouts see as a slot receiver, is an intriguing case.

NFL Network analyst Charles Davis thinks Steelman is good enough to be drafted. Davis watched Steelman impress NFL scouts at the East-West Shrine Game in January. Steelman played slot receiver, scored a touchdown from a wildcat formation and snapped the ball for the extra-point try on the next play.

Davis said if Steelman didn’t have a military obligation after his West Point graduation next month, “I think he’s probably picked. I think late in the draft, he’s a draft pick. At East-West, he did everything. Literally, everything. You know you can make this work somehow, some way.”

Steelman could also play defensive back and be effective in special teams coverage.

The Ravens, Jets, Buccaneers and Browns have contacted Steelman. A handful of teams including the Giants have spoke with his agent.

The Jets were the only team to send a scout to Steelman’s pro day in March at West Point. But, Steelman’s workout video has circulated to other teams.

Tampa Bay is an interesting team. Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano knows Steelman well. Schiano prepared his Rutgers team to defend Steelman and Army’s triple option in 2009 and 2010.

“I think getting drafted will go either way to be honest,” Steelman said. “There’s a good possibility that I could and there’s a good possibility that I couldn’t. I just have to wait and see.”

Steelman will get his chance. He’s confident of that.

Davis said NFL teams should have Steelman high on their priority list of free agents after the draft is completed.

“He will be on lists where personnel guys will say, ‘Steelman better be on your list. Go get him,”” Davis said. “Guys with that kind of work ethic and talent, you figured it out but do you use a draft pick on it?”

Steelman said he will be in New York with his family Friday and Saturday but he isn’t planning on attending the draft at Radio City Music Hall.

Army’s all-time sack leader Josh McNary tweeted Wednesday afternoon that he is an Indianapolis Colts.

McNary, who helped lead Army to a 2010 Armed Forces Bowl win in his senior season, participated in the NFL Super Regional Combine on April 7-8 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

McNary served two years of service as a platoon leader following his 2011 West Point graduation. The contract from the Colts allows McNary to ask for his military release.

McNary, who is 6-foot and 251 pounds, probably projects as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. He turned 25 today (Wednesday). McNary had 28 sacks in his Army career as a rush end and linebacker. The Colts placed McNary on the reserve/military list.

Jon Crucitti’s baseball numbers are impressive.

Crucitti leads Army with a .344 average. The junior outfielder, who doubles as a running back on the football team, has reached base 52 percent of the time this season.

But, Crucitti’s contributions to Army’s team are measured deeper than his statistics.

Crucitti, who missed most of the past two baseball seasons due to injury, has assumed the leadership role on a team, which has just three seniors.

“Jon falls into that mold with J.T. Watkins (one of Army’s captains last year) in terms of his leadership,” Army coach Joe Sottolano said. “He’s a special individual. There is no question about that. What you see in terms of numbers is what you partially get. His biggest attribute even more than his baseball skills are his leadership skills.”

Crucitti’s on-the-field leadership starts with hitting at the top of Army’s lineup.

“We lost a real good leadoff hitter, probably the best I’ve ever coached in Zach Price and Jon had done a phenomenal job in taking over that position,” Sottolano said.

Army’s season opener against Morgan State will be played on Friday, August 30 at Michie Stadium with a 7 p.m. kickoff set.

The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, August 31.

The decision to move the game was based on preserving the Labor Day weekend for cadets. Cadets are required to attend all home football games.

“It’s just an odd weekend,” Army athletic director Boo Corrigan told the Times Herald-Record. “So, we felt we would take a little bit of a chance by moving it to Friday and be the first launch of football games that day or that weekend and market it to our fans as early as we could.”

STORY: Season opener under Michie Stadium lights.

Either day, the game is going to be a tough draw on Labor Day weekend.

Army announced a noon kickoff for its four other home games – Stanford (Sept. 14), Wake Forest (Sept. 21), Eastern Michigan (Oct. 12) and Western Kentucky (Nov. 9).

When asked if Army was looking to have more night games at Michie Stadium down the road, Corrigan said, “No. We’re excited to be playing at noon. We think that’s something that is good for us.”

Army’s post-season defensive depth chart should look drastically different in training camp this summer.

Five returning starters – sophomore strong safety Hayden Pierce, sophomore cornerback Marques Avery; freshman rover Alex Meier, junior rover Justin Trimble and freshman safety Brandon Fusilier-Jeffires – didn’t participate in spring practice due to injury or academics.

Junior Colby Miller, a jayvee team captain the last three seasons, is listed as the starter at middle linebacker.

Freshman Shaquille Tolbert rose up the depth chart. Tolbert, a cornerback last season, is the starter at strong safety.
