This is it. I rented the Palace Theater, a quaint venue, to show her the surprise. She's a beautiful woman; unspeakably patient, and apart from whom I would never know the supreme value of Christ's love for me. This is the lady for whom I am eternally grateful, and intend to spend the rest of my life showing her.

I asked Stephen Ballast, our model helicopter building A/V guy, about setting up a studio in my office for recording vocals and guitar. This is what he came back with.

1. New Computer (Recommended specs.)
I also asked film composer Alain Mayrand the specs for his PC. I know we both use Finale for orchestration writing, so it peeked my interest. His PC specs are: Intel corei7, 4 core cpu. 16 gigs of RAM. Basic video card. Ultra quiet
cpu fan, not stock model. Very quiet case as well. Not a complex thing, just get the
strongest cpu (Intel only, from what I understand) and a lot of the
fastest RAM, not the cheapest RAM. For soundcard, M-Audio Firewire 410. (For keyboard he uses an
    M-Audio Keystation Pro-88.)

2. Purchase the M-Audio Fast Track Pro recording interface ($167)*

3. Guitar recording mic (Options priced low to high)

    ($157) Cascade Fat Head Ribbon

    ($400) Rode NT-2A

Congregational Singing
We always begin our services with a quiet prelude. Then a pastor gives the call to worship based on a passage from Scripture, followed by a time for silent confession of sin and the assurance of our pardon from sin through the blood of Jesus. This begins the "dialogue" of worship, wherein God speaks to us through his written word, and we respond in faith to him through prayers and praise.

This Sunday, we were delighted to have the Cedar Springs Orchestra join in our worship. Brad McIlwain has been in charge of growing and preparing the orchestra for worship for a couple of years now. And through his God-given talents, we have seen a lot of growth in the orchestra, both in quantity and in quality. (Brad also directs the Music Academy, which has seen similar growth!)

This Sunday, using revised arrangements that we purchased from PraiseCharts, we sang Mighty to Save, O the Blood, & Revelation Song.

The PraiseCharts arrangements are orchestral interpretations of the original recordings. Oftentimes we don't particularly like the PraiseCharts arrangers' ideas. The trumpets usually get a little too "Herp Albert" for our congregation's tastes. So Brad and I spend some time rearranging the parts. Interestingly, sometimes just switching the brass and strings can solve a lot of the problems.

At this point in the service we historically have sung the Doxology. I am currently deciding on a weekly basis whether or not we will. If it fits musically, we do. If it only exists as a cue for the ushers to come down to take the offering, I don't; especially if it takes the wind out of our sails in worship. Whatever we do, I am trying to faithfully pray at this moment with a focus on our offering.

Here's the gist of what I prayed Sunday:

Blessed Savior Christ
We praise and thank you for clearing our earthly debts
And for the joy of being able to make a fresh start.

We praise and thank you at an infinitely deeper level
For coming to earth to die for us
And to pay for those debts of sin
which we could have paid for ourselves.

As we enter into this portion of our worship
When we give our tithes and offerings,
We want to especially pray for the church staff and elders –
That you would grant them wisdom, discernment, integrity and, most of all unity,
As they make decisions for next year’s budget.

Get glory in our giving and in our spending.
May your gospel of grace & the miracle of your mercy
Motivate all that we do as a church….

Some books that have really helped me prepare to pray publicly are The Westminster Collection of Christian Prayers, Valley of Vision: A collection of Puritan Prayers & Devotions, and The Worship Sourcebook, all from which I have borrowed liberally. (For instance, the first two sentences in my above prayer came from The Westminster Collection, which helped me move into my own prayer for our particular church.)

Offertory Anthem
Under the direction of Gene Peterson, the Sanctuary Choir and the Rejoice! Choir, joined by the orchestra and band, did a rousing anthem entitled Our Great God by Cliff Duren. Though I've grown kind of numb to the adjective "passionate" in the Christian subculture vocabulary of today, which the song's chorus uses in describing "our great, passionate God", I appreciate how our pastor, John Wood, took that term and used it in his pastoral prayer. It's true, our God is not the dispassionate, unmoved Mover. He is passionate in his love and in his wrath.

Communion

For our Communion songs, we used a string quartet.

The first song was Bob Kauflin's version of the old hymn O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus. Bob has become a faithful friend over the years, and has earned my deepest respect as a worship leader, pastor and musician. However, he is also a great songwriter and arranger. His remake is golden: Oh the Deep Deep Love. We ended Communion with Lead Me to the Cross.

Obviously, the main instrument for any worship leader is their voice. (OK, the main instrument, biblically speaking, is your heart and mind, since God is seeking worshipers who will worship him in spirit and in truth (Jn 4).) But in order for you to lead effectively in corporate worship, you need a voice that is pleasant and not pitchy. It also helps if you have other voices to help you out, harmonizing or reinforcing the melody. Beyond that, it's a big plus to use both men and women in helping to lead, since women naturally tend to follow a woman's voice and men a man's voice.

Now, I don't know if your voice has a nice, natural, studio-quality sound. Mine doesn't. I need all the help I can get. And when I'm away leading worship for retreats, I feel especially needy.

Enter VoiceLive 2 by TC Helicon:

a floor-based, stompbox-styled, sturdily constructed vocal harmony effects processer and looper. It covers a wide range of vocal effects for live as well as studio applications. With reverbs, delays, compression, multi-part harmony and doubling effects, you’ll be astounded by the sheer amount of powerful processing at your toe-tips.

The Helicon VoiceLive 2 also has a guitar input, which is great for the modern axe-toting worship leader. And what's awesome is that the VoiceLive 2 harmonies follow your chord progressions. Very impressive! (You can also use a MIDI keyboard or aux-input for, say, an iPod playing backing tracks.) The guitar effects are nice, too!

Check out this in depth video review to hear it in action.

As you can tell, the VoiceLive 2 is really effective and helpful for beefing up your vocals. It has an adjustable pitch correction option, too, if you need it.

It's a wise investment for the solo artist or worship leader, or even if you have full band with backup vocalists like me.

Yesterday we began our congregational singing with the strong, beautiful hymn Immortal Invisible God Only Wise. The organ introduced it, and accompanied all three verses. Then, at the end of the final verse, the organist, instead of resolving the hymn to the root chord (G), landed on C. At this point, the band entered (using my arrangement below), and we sang the first verse again.

Immortal, Invisible (Band)

We ended the hymn using the chord progression above, and went right into a song I wrote a number of years ago called In Spirit and Truth (based on John 4, where Jesus told the woman at the well that the Father is seeking those who will worship him in spirit and in truth). It has the same tempo and key as Immortal Invisible, but is more ballad-like.

In Spirit and Truth (We Come)

Our third song was the now classic, We Fall Down by Chris Tomlin. (Watch and hear Chris and Steven Curtis Chapman sing it together below)

Offertory
The choir always takes a summer break, which is great for them, but adds a little more on my plate for Sundays since they normally do the offering song. That said, it's a great time in worship to introduce new songs for the church to sing. This Sunday we introduced a powerful new song sung by Natalie Grant - Your Great Name.

Communion
We celebrate the Lord's Supper most Sundays. That usually allows for two songs. This week we sang Everything Cries Holy and From the Squalor of a Borrowed Stable (Immanuel). The beauty of Stuart Townend's From the Squalor is the thoroughness of the gospel message poetically conveyed in it, following the life of Christ from his birth to exaltation to his ultimate return. It's a great way to end a Sunday morning!

Songs & Arrangements
All Creatures of Our God and King (St. Francis of Assisi) - The organ introduced the hymn and played the first verse. At the end of V1, the acoustic guitar sets rhythm, and band introduces musical theme revolving around a D -> Bm progression. This electric guitar-based theme bridged every verse. All three vocalists led on the first verse, bringing fuller vocal leadership to the organ accompaniment. Backed way off to just acoustic & lite piano on V4 ("And all ye men of tender heart / Forgiving one another, take your part")

Wonderful Maker (Redman, Tomlin) - As All Creatures ends on D, electric guitar begins new melodic idea, based on the Tomlin recording. You can hear the vibey theme at the beginning of the song in this video. (Interestingly, I originally thought about connecting these two songs by playing the new theme in D (the key we were leaving), and then in G (the key we'd be playing Wonderful Maker), but playing the guitar riff as written worked fine, since there are so many common tones in the two keys.) We had the electric guitar just play the riff without the band to allow for a transition between the big hymn and the more contemplative song.

Let Us Adore (Morgan) - Played in G. Got huge. Ended with a cappella, softer singing of the chorus, which moved into time of prayer as we prepared for the Offering.

No Doxology - This was a first. I discussed it with our pastor. We agreed that the Doxology has become almost ineffective in our service, serving more as a cue for the ushers to come down for the offertory than the next natural step in our service of worship. So I prayed instead, having asked the head usher to inform the rest of the ushers to come forward during my prayer, which was done as the band softly vamped.

Offertory
From the Inside Out (Houston) - We introduced this to the congregation for the first time. Good response from young (who already sing it) and old. Here's Hillsong's version. Ours was similar, just not as big. (And there were, like, 2 or 3 fewer folks in our service than you'll see in this video.)

The intro and first verse was robust and organ-led. As we ended the first verse, I began a lite acoustic guitar groove, with the band coming in after me.

We then sang Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing. Even though someone in our church recommended not doing modulations, I did. Don't know what you might think about it, but I find modulating for a final verse very effective for helping our hearts exult in what our mouths are singing. I also now include a verse I learned from Bob Kauflin's recording, Together for the Gospel Live.

Oh that day when freed from sinning
I shall see Thy lovely face
Full arrayed in blood-washed linen
How I’ll sing Thy sovereign grace
Come, my Lord, no longer tarry
Bring Thy promises to pass
For I know Thy pow’r will keep me
Till I’m home with Thee at last

We finished with the song, All I Have is Christ

For Communion we played an instrumental of Great is Thy Faithfulness, followed by Bob Kauflin's O the Deep, Deep Love (which is a fresh arrangement of O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus; Free charts here.)
I thought I'd offer my fave apps in a series.

Free

myPrayPal is an extremely simple and helpful app. Just write down people you want to pray for, schedule when you want to be reminded to pray for them, and the app does the rest (except...ehem.....pray).

Note to Worship leaders using iPad as a music stand: the faithful app will remind you to pray right in the middle of a song set if you have prayer scheduled at that time. The good thing is, it doesn't open the app. It's just send a little bubble reminder to the middle of the screen that you can quickly cancel. (Or you can schedule the prayer for every day but Sunday.)

This app is very handy to keep the main thing the main thing, keeping you from prayerlessness.

ANTHEM: Strategies for Fighting Lust

I have in mind men and women. For men it's obvious. The need for warfare against the bombardment of visual temptation to fixate on sexual images is urgent. For women it is less obvious, but just as great if we broaden the scope of temptation to food or figure or relational fantasies. When I say "lust" I mean the realm of thought, imagination, and desire that leads to sexual misconduct. So here is one set of strategies in the war against wrong desires. I put it in the form of an acronym, A N T H E M.

A – AVOID as much as is possible and reasonable the sights and situations that arouse unfitting desire. I say "possible and reasonable" because some exposure to temptation is inevitable. And I say "unfitting desire" because not all desires for sex, food, and family are bad. We know when they are unfitting and unhelpful and on their way to becoming enslaving. We know our weaknesses and what triggers them. "Avoiding" is a Biblical strategy. "Flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness" (2 Timothy 2:22). "Make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires" (Romans 13:14).

N – Say NO to every lustful thought within five seconds. And say it with the authority of Jesus Christ. "In the name of Jesus, NO!" You don't have much more than five seconds. Give it more unopposed time than that, and it will lodge itself with such force as to be almost immovable. Say it out loud if you dare. Be tough and warlike. As John Owen said, "Be killing sin or it will be killing you." Strike fast and strike hard. "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you" ( James 4:7).

T – TURN the mind forcefully toward Christ as a superior satisfaction. Saying "no" will not suffice. You must move from defense to offense. Fight fire with fire. Attack the promises of sin with the promises of Christ. The Bible calls lusts "deceitful desires" (Ephesians 4:22). They lie. They promise more than they can deliver. The Bible calls them "passions of your former ignorance" (1 Peter 1:14). Only fools yield. "All at once he follows her, as an ox goes to the slaughter" (Proverbs 7:22). Deceit is defeated by truth. Ignorance is defeated by knowledge. It must be glorious truth and beautiful knowledge. This is why I wrote Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ. We must stock our minds with the superior promises and pleasures of Jesus. Then we must turn to them immediately after saying, "NO!"

H – HOLD the promise and the pleasure of Christ firmly in your mind until it pushes the other images out. "Fix your eyes on Jesus" (Hebrews 3:1). Here is where many fail. They give in too soon. They say, "I tried to push it out, and it didn't work." I ask, "How long did you try?" How hard did you exert your mind? The mind is a muscle. You can flex it with vehemence. Take the kingdom violently (Matthew 11:12). Be brutal. Hold the promise of Christ before your eyes. Hold it. Hold it! Don't let it go! Keep holding it! How long? As long as it takes. Fight! For Christ's sake, fight till you win! If an electric garage door were about to crush your child you would hold it up with all our might and holler for help, and hold it and hold it and hold it and hold it.

E – ENJOY a superior satisfaction. Cultivate the capacities for pleasure in Christ. One reason lust reigns in so many is that Christ has so little appeal. We default to deceit because we have little delight in Christ. Don't say, "That's just not me." What steps have you taken to waken affection for Jesus? Have you fought for joy? Don't be fatalistic. You were created to treasure Christ with all your heart – more than you treasure sex or sugar. If you have little taste for Jesus, competing pleasures will triumph. Plead with God for the satisfaction you don't have: "Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days" (Psalm 90:14). Then look, look, look at the most magnificent Person in the universe until you see him the way he is.

M – MOVE into a useful activity away from idleness and other vulnerable behaviors. Lust grows fast in the garden of leisure. Find a good work to do, and do it with all your might. "Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord" (Romans 12:11). "Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord" (1 Corinthians 15:58). Abound in work. Get up and do something. Sweep a room. Hammer a nail. Write a letter. Fix a faucet. And do it for Jesus' sake. You were made to manage and create. Christ died to make you "zealous for good deeds" (Titus 2:14). Displace deceitful lusts with a passion for good deeds.

Fighting at your side,
PIPER'S NOTES
HOSANNA

I know one of the concerns of the children's music ministry is that the children understand what they are singing and that they mean it. And I share that concern for our people. In a moment the choir will sing a song called, "Hosanna, Hosanna!" And after that we all will sing a song which begins: "Hosanna in the highest!" So I want to give a little lesson in Greek and Hebrew to make sure we all know what the New Testament means when it says in three different places, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" (Mt. 21:9,15), or "Hosanna in the highest!" (Mk. 11:9,10), or simply, "Hosanna!" (John 12:13).

You all know that the New Testament was first written in Greek and the Old Testament was first written in Hebrew. Wherever the word "hosanna" occurs in the New Testament do you know what the Greek word is? Right! It's "hosanna." All the English translators did was use English letters (h-o-s-a-n-n-a) to make the sound of a Greek word.

But if you look in a Greek dictionary to find what it means, you know what you find? You find that it is really not originally a Greek word after all. The men who wrote the New Testament in Greek did the same thing to a Hebrew word that our English translators did to the Greek word: they just used Greek letters (UNABLE TO DISPLAY GREEK CHARACTERS ) to make the sound of a Hebrew phrase ( UNABLE TO DISPLAY HEBREW CHARACTERS ). I know this sounds sort of complicated. But it's really not. Our English word "hosanna" comes from a Greek word "hosanna" which comes from a Hebrew phrase hoshiya na.

And that Hebrew phrase is found one solitary place in the whole Old Testament, Psalm 118:25, where it means, "Save, please!" It is a cry to God for help. Like when somebody pushes out off the diving board before you can swim and you come up hollering: "Help, save me" … "Hoshiya na!"

But something happened to that phrase, hoshiya na. The meaning changed over the years. In the psalm it was immediately followed by the exclamation: "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" The cry for help, hoshiya na, was answered almost before it came out of the psalmist's mouth. And over the centuries the phrase hoshiya na stopped being a cry for help in the ordinary language of the Jews. Instead it became a shout of hope and exultation. It used to mean, "Save, please!" But gradually it came to mean, "Salvation! Salvation! Salvation has come!" It used to be what you would say when you fell off the diving board. But it came to be what you would say when you see the lifeguard coming to save you! It is the bubbling over of a heart that sees hope and joy and salvation on the way and can't keep it in.

So "Hosanna!" means, "Hooray for salvation! It's coming! It's here! Salvation! Salvation!"

And "Hosanna to the Son of David!" means, "The Son of David is our salvation! Hooray for the king! Salvation belongs to the king!"

And "Hosanna in the highest!" means, "Let all the angels in heaven join the song of praise. Salvation! Salvation! Let the highest heaven sing the song!"

Picture a super bowl game, and (believe it or not) the Vikings are three points ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers are on their own 35 and have no more time outs. There are two seconds remaining on the clock. The Vikings' fans are going wild. The Steelers line up, fake a pass to the receivers on the left field line and run a wide sweep around the right end and the quarterback breaks into the open and heads down the right sideline -- 40 - 45 - 50 - 45. The only hope for the Vikings is Willie Teal, the safety, cutting a diagonal across the field. And out of the Vikings' grandstand come two kinds of Hosannas, the old kind and the new kind. One part of the crowd is yelling: "Catch him! Catch him, Willie!" (That's the old Hosanna.) The other part of the crowd is yelling, "You got him! You got him, Willie!" (That's the new Hosanna.) The word moved from plea to praise; from cry to confidence.

So when we sing "Hosanna" now, let's make it very personal. Let's make it our praise and our confidence. The Son of David has come. He has saved us from guilt and fear and hopelessness. Salvation! Salvation belongs to our God and to the Son! Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest!

After finding a couple of Catholic apps spiritually helpful, I figured I'd compile my own "Examination of Conscience". This is something not done in Protestant circles that I'm aware of. But I find it useful. You may too.

At the top are some Scriptures to soften and encourage the heart, followed by a prayer of preparation to confess our sins. Our Catholic brothers and sisters would use this as a way to get ready to go to confession. Whether you follow Scripture's encouragement to "confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed" (James 5:16), or you use this for private confession, I hope it's helpful.

Note, there's a "submit" button at the bottom of the form. I can't find a way in Google Docs to turn that off. No need hit it.

<p>&amp;amp;amp;lt;p&amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Loading...&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;lt;/p&amp;amp;amp;gt;</p>
