Make a New Year's Resolution Now

of indoor cycling classes

Classes start Tuesday, January 3rd. The Tuesday Classes are January 3rd - February 7th from 6 PM to 7:15 PM. $15 per class or $12 per class ($72 total) if you sign up for the entire series. The classes run about 1:15 total.

After the Riveria Ride...the greatest bike show in Northern California! All lovers of bikes and fun converge at Santa Rosa City Hall on August 20th.

Part festival and part bike “swap meet”, the Northern California Bicycle Expo features a wide range of vendors from hobbyist to major industry players and everyone in between. This is the place for great finds and deals on new and used bikes, gear, parts, clothing, and bike inspired arts, crafts and more. Plus, local bands will rock the stage, and there’ll be a plethora of specialty bike exhibits, kid’s activities, raffles, great food, drinks, and more!

The Localize! Bicycle Tour, The Economics of Happiness, in Sebastopol, Aug 10th

Join the Localize! Bicycle Tour crew on August 10th for The Economics of Happiness and live music in The Abbey at Hopmonk in Sebastopol, 230 Petaluma Ave. Doors will open at 7:00pm, and admission is $10. All Ages. The event will begin with a brief overview of the tour, a screening of The Economics of Happiness will follow, and finally, Becky White and her whole band will rock the night away.

From August 1st to August 21st, Becky White and James Miller will pedal hundreds of miles to promote and document the Bay Area’s growing movement for economic localization. Staff from the Berkeley office of The International Society for Ecology and Culture (ISEC), Becky and James will screen the award-winning documentary, The Economics of Happiness, in several cities. They will visit community leaders and project sites throughout Marin, Sonoma and Mendocino Counties. They hope to show that local initiatives like community supported agriculture, farmer’s markets, strong local businesses, and local renewable energy, are not only good for our sense of well-being, but our economy, and our environment.

Five years in the making, The Economics of Happiness is a global tour-de-force—going beyond identifying problems, it outlines realistic
solutions to our most serious crises. Localisation, the film argues, is a powerful strategy to help repair our damaged ecosystems, our societies and ourselves. The film draws inspiration from the emerging worldwide movement for economic localization—urban gardens in Detroit, Transition Towns, hands-on education in Japan, community farming in India, cultural preservation in Peru.

The Economics of Happiness features acclaimed economists, environmentalists and scholars including Vandana Shiva, Zac Goldsmith,
Bill McKibben, David Korten, Juliet Schor, Richard Heinberg, Bhutanese film director Khyentse Norbu, and the first Prime Minister of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile, Samdhong Rinpoche.

Lots to write about

Oh man, what a great Independence Day weekend! They say the beginning is a good place to start, so here goes...

Friday:
It had been a busy week, so when 5pm Friday rolled around, it was time to get things kicked off with our new tradition, "Festive Friday" and several new friends came in to join us. It is nice to let the weekday wind down with a cold brew and the chance to talk about bikes! We'll be doing the Festive Friday thing again, so be sure to come on down to join us as we formulate Tour de France viewing strategies and other important topics...

Saturday:

I had all the best intentions of getting up early to watch the first stage of Le Tour. But, as any parent can tell ya, sometimes mornings don't go the way ya plan... Still, I was able to get two cups of coffee down before showing up at the shop for the Team Swift ride. That was a LOT OF FUN! Current Team Swift captain John Piasta (2nd at Nationals!) was there to lead the large group out. Also in attendance were several Team Swift alums including Ryan Eastman (now riding for the Trek/Livestrong squad), Sam Bassetti (now riding for the Firefighters Cycling Association U23 development squad, Tyler Brandt (now riding for California Giant) and Nick Kinney (now riding for the Whole Athlete squad.) In total, there were probably over 45 Team Swift juniors, ex-juniors and parents on the ride. Let's not forget coach Laura Charameda, who dutifully kept the young charges in tight formation. It is really cool to see the young riders attack the sport with such passion. Mad props to Isaiah and his developing climbing skills! I had to cut the ride short to get back to work at the shop, so I shepherded a small contingent back on only the smoothest stretches of West County pavement. Okay, so it was a little bumpy... At least we made it back. It really was a lot of fun. I am stoked to be a Team Swift sponsor. And for all those on the team that help support the revolution, I truly am appreciative. I will definitely keep supporting Team Swift as long as it is sustainable!

Monday:
I got the chance to do a nice afternoon ride. Only 90 degrees, so it felt pretty cool compared to the hotter temps we had seen on previous days. Nice to get out and do a solo ride. It's great to be at the shop talking bikes and good to be on group rides talking bikes, but sometimes it's good to just go out and ride alone. Especially when ya feel good and can get in a zone. It was only a Thomas / Maddox, Harrison, Facendini ride, but it felt good. Just about the time that the energy was getting low, I bumped into father and son duo, Mark and Isaiah. Isaiah was rockin like a rocket on his new cool TT rig that we had recently set him up on. I'm not sure exactly of his height, but let's just say that Isaiah doesn't exactly dwarf his 47cm bike. He DOES, however, make it look fast. He's got a smooth, natural pedal stroke and tons of enthusiasm. It was cool to see father and son riding together, having fun and enjoying the West County roads.

And on a side note, or at least a "backside" note... I think I have finally found a saddle that I really like and I am ready to recommend. Selle Royal is the parent company of Fizik. I really liked my Fizik Antares saddles, but I could have handled a little more padding. I also really liked my Edge Design saddle, but the width was a whisker narrow for what turns out to be my wider backside. Well, when my Fizik rep was in the shop recently, I was lamenting my lack of a perfect saddle. She suggested the Selle Royal Seta. OMG. Heaven! From the top and from the side, it appears to be almost like the Antares - just a skosh wider than the popular Arione and a very flat profile. Thankfully, it is generously padded. Not like the gel seat on a cruiser, but certainly more than the thin layer of dense foam that many saddles these days offer. In short, I REALLY like it. Another bonus is that Selle Royal uses the same ICS system as Fizik, so the saddle bag that clipped into my Antares saddle clips in just as easily and securely into the new Selle Royal Seta saddle. In short - it feels good and it looks great perched atop the seat mast on my Autuori. Two Thumbs up!

Two New Bikes in Need of Good Homes

Meet Ms. Jamis Quest 2009 and Ms. Jamis Quest 2010. Both of these fine machines took up residence at the WCR over a year ago. We've fostered them during that time and kept them in good health. But the fact is that they're not living out their potential on our concrete floors. They need asphalt. They need to keep that bearing grease moving.

The 2010 model (the white one) is a 48cm frame, while the 2009 model (the blue one) is a 54cm frame.

We so want these bike to have good homes that we're willing to make deals! The original sticker price was $1399 (for the 2009) and $1799 (for the 2010), but if either of these bikes appeals to you then make us an offer.

Thank You All for the Warm Welcome Back!!!

I am writing today to express my gratitude for all the kind words that so many of you have sent to me to welcome me back to the shop. It was hard for me to believe just how many of you took the time to write or swing by the shop. I thank you all.

To express my gratitude, I'd like to invite you all to a couple of festive Fridays at the shop.

Festive Friday, test run... 5pm to 6pm at WCR

Tomorrow, Friday June 24th, in conjunction with the Giro Bello registration (they'll be here from 3 to 7, me thinks) WCR will host a festive Friday test run. We'll supply the first case of suds along with some chips and salsa. Come on down, hang out out with friends old and new and kick your weekend off right!

A Message from Steve

Some of you may have noticed that I haven't been around the shop nearly as much as usual. As one person said, I have been conspicuous by my absence. Over the last several months, I have been exceptionally fortunate in that I have been virtually a 100% full-time stay-at-home dad. To be truthful, it has been great. After all, "They are only young once". It was an incredible way for me to spend a winter and spring... Connor has grown and developed so much.

But summer is here! And with summer and sun, there is bikes! So it is back to the shop for me on something close to a full-time basis. I look forward to watching all the cyclists roll by on the path and catching up with friends when they swing by for a pit-stop at the shop.

I hope to see you all soon!

Summer is almost here (finally). The rain clouds have made room for
fog! Ok, there's some sunshine too. Best of all, my allergies have
started to settle down. I can breath again!

our mechanic Ian Bennett. Ian and his wife are headed back to
