The Western Cape branch held its annual End of the Year Recruitment Breakfast at Durbanville Hills Winery today (Wednesday 30th November 2011).       Our guest speaker was awesome author S.A. Partridge who shared her thoughts about Young Adult fiction and read a brief extract from her latest book, Dark Poppy's Demise .

We also took the opportunity to hand over the Western Cape trophy to the Western Cape Librarian of the Year for 2011, Christelle Lubbe. And we announced that the UCT School of Librarianship would remain open and that the PGDIPLIS, Masters and Doctoral Degrees would be on offer from 2012.

Father Christmas's helpers, Mercia Sias and Jacinta Avontuur, conducted the lucky draws.   Thank you Mercia of World Books, and Red Feather Promotions for the donations.

As Julian Schroeder, Vice Chair of the branch observed during the thank yous, that members should head back to their libraries, check the Young Adults section for S.A. Partridge's books, and if they weren't there, to do the right thing and get them!

The breakfast was fully booked with all places taken up on the day!   The food was delicious, the service excellent and the view priceless.

Sad News: Veronica Behm-Croucher

It is with great sadness that we learnt of the passing away of Veronica Behm-Croucher (Milnerton Library) last Thursday. Veronica served as the children’s librarian at Milnerton Library for many years but she was much more than that to those of us who knew her. No one can forget the passion Veronica brought to children’s work. Her spirit will remain with us forever. We will surely miss her going forward, especially in the arena of children’s work.

Her funeral service takes place on Thursday 13 October at 2pm at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Goede Hoop Street in Bothasig.

3rd November 2011: WCHELIG holds its annual colloquium. This time the topic is Information Literacy. This is an opportunity to share experiences and current information literacy practices in higher education institutions in the Western Cape. Venue is UWC Library Auditorium.

30th November 2011: Our annual end of the year breakfast, to be held at Durbanville Hills Winery. Our guest speaker is author Sally Partridge. Menu is a breakfast buffet with hot, cold and sweet offerings.

At both events, there will be opportunities to renew or join LIASA at the Early Bird fee of R375.00 - which will give you membership until the end of 2012.

LIASA Western Cape Branch Librarian of the Year 2011 Announced

It gives me great pleasure to announce that the winner of the LIASA Western Cape Branch Librarian of the Year for 2011 is Christelle Lubbe.

Christelle Lubbe is Chief Librarian at Bellville Public Library. She has been a LIASA member since 2005, and currently serves on PACLIG’s Western Cape branch committee.

She is a passionate public librarian, described by fellow librarians as a “dynamic vibrant bundle of energy that encapsulates the essence of a public librarian.”

She has made a difference where ever she has been - working with Adult Learners at Milnerton Library, where she set up and managed the Milnerton Library Adult Learner Centre (2000) scooping several local and national awards including the LIASA Western Cape Branch Award in 2005. And then her focus changed to developing library staff within the public library sector, which led to her thesis on internal communication in a public library for the Carnegie Library Leadership Academy. She comments that we (as librarians) are developing ways, methods and breakthroughs on a daily basis, but that we don’t record or share this knowledge widely.

This is where Christelle is a role model for other librarians. She has taken the opportunities that LIASA has offered to further develop her leadership skills through the Carnegie Library Leadership Academy, the Research Workshop (her paper will be presented at this year’s conference) and serving on PACLIG in the Western Cape, and shares her knowledge and skills widely.

Christelle will now be competing in the National LIASA Librarian of the Year Award, the winner of which will be announced at the Gala Dinner during Conference 2011.

Congratulations and Well Done, Christelle!

Librarian of the Year: Western Cape - call for nominations

We are looking for nominations for the Western Cape LIASA Librarian of the Year.

The Branch Librarian of the Year will then go forward to the national competition where the LIASA Librarian of the Year will be named. The Librarian of the Year is a role model for the Library and Information Services community and a person whose contributions make a lasting impact on the sector.

Branch nominations:- the deadline for Western Cape members to submit nominations to the branch is Friday 12th August 2011.

The nominee should:
• Be a paid-up LIASA member for a minimum of 5(five) consecutive years
• Be knowledgeable about the LIS sector and its resources
• Demonstrate high levels of professionalism
• Currently engaged in LIS sector with a minimum of 5 years in the field.
• Must have a recognized LIS qualification.

Important information about the nomination form:
• The nomination form to be completed and signed by the nominator
• A motivation statement, maximum 200 words signed by the nominator
• The motivation must be accompanied by a profile of the nominee which outlines the nominee’s opinion on the following:
o LIASA’s role in the LIS sector and the future role that the nominee believes LIASA should play.
o As the prestigious award winner, what would the projects/issues be that you would like to see addressed in the LIS sector.

Stellenbosch University 2011 Annual Library Symposium

The Stellenbosch University Library and Information Service takes pleasure in announcing that the Stellenbosch University Annual Library Symposium will resume its usual spot on the academic library calendar this year.

The Symposium has been an important platform for deliberation of library and information service trends and issues, networking and professional development for the last 12 years. This legacy will continue as we, in 2011, turn our attention to the changing research environment in which we as libraries currently find ourselves.

“Today, the research library is at an inflection point”. With this statement, Rick Anderson1 captures a dilemma that has been echoing through the LIS literature in recent years; a dilemma born from various elements characteristic of the contemporary academic research environment.

Emerging new modes of research is one element. Research practice today is increasingly diverse in location, increasingly interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary with great emphasis on collaboration. More diverse and informal modes of communication are used; there is a heavy dependence on information in digital format and researchers have access to vastly improved processing power.2

At the same time, scientific and scholarly publishing is evolving along two distinct paths - one in which large multinational commercial publishers are increasing their dominance in such areas as branded journal titles and access to scientific publication, and the other in which a variety of open access initiatives is emerging2.

Based on the premise that the production and dissemination of knowledge will lead to economic benefits such as the reduction of poverty and unemployment, building research capacity has become a key strategic activity for most higher education institutions in South Africa. Within this context, academic libraries are increasingly called upon to provide the resources and tools to enable their institutions to successfully reach their targets for student and research output, to measure their research and to identify opportunities for collaboration.

This leaves academic libraries with the question: What are the services required from librarians to meet the emerging needs of a new cadre of researchers? And moreover, what skills should we cultivate and develop in meeting the challenge?

LIASA has pleasure in announcing the second year of awarding the Ellen Tise – LIASA Leadership Grant. This grant will be awarded in honour of Ellen Tise during her term of office as President of IFLA.

LIASA is proud of Ellen Tise's leadership and want to give a young aspiring leader an opportunity to attend IFLA and learn from this great role model. This grant is awarded in support of Ellen's IFLA presidency as well as acknowledgement of her contributions to the LIS sector in South Africa and abroad.

It is with great pleasure that LIASA invites applications from LIS professionals with leadership potential and presently serving on executive committees of LIASA Branches, Interest Groups and Representative Council.

The grant will cover IFLA registration, airfare to and accommodation in Puerto Rico for the duration of the IFLA conference as well as US Visa application fees.

The successful applicant will be informed by 13 June 2011 to facilitate visa applications.

SA Library Week posters

The SALW posters will shortly be available for distribution. Stocks are limited.

Posters will be distributed to the public and community libraries in Cape Town and the Western Cape through COTC, as well as to CPUT, UWC, UCT and Stellenbosch. A batch of posters will also be sent to Edulis for distribution to schools.

So it is not necessary for members from these libraries to respond to this email.

For the other institutions and libraries: please let me know (by email) as soon as possible, how many posters your institution would like and what arrangements you can make for collecting these.

Western Cape Awards Library winners

On behalf of LIASA Western Cape, I would like to congratulate the libraries who were recognised and honoured at the Western Cape Annual Cultural Awards just announced.

The Most Community-Involved Library Award went to Wellington Library.

This library serves a diverse community, from toddlers to students, and also hosts the aged. The library has close relations with the surrounding schools and also most of the students from the Western Cape University of Technology make use of the facilities provided here. The library staff assist learners with acquiring research skills. They have established satellite libraries in the farm areas in order to assist those that cannot come to town.

Best Youth Services went to Rocklands Library.

This has become a learning centre of the community through their sustainable programmes that have increased the literacy rate of the youth tremendously. The library also strives to eradicate anti-social behaviour by forming awareness programmes around topics such as crime and drugs. They further equip yout with debating skills through their established debating forums, and provide weekly educational workshops for them. They have also established chess clubs with the aim of enhancing the intellectual capacity of the youth through the game.

Best Childrens' Services went to the Langenhoven Memorial Library in Outshoorn.

The Langenhoven Memorial Library ensured that they have books and magazines that are able to equip the learners with the necessary but relevant information. The outreach team visits 27 schools on a quarterly basis and provides learners with awareness topics such as environmental issues while promoting a culture of reading. Annually they host a competition in association with the WCED for learners in the foundation phase.
