Western Whitetail Magazine, Winter 2012 - The winter issue of Western Whitetail Magazine has hit the Magazine Rack with vital information regarding hunting whitetails in the West. In the cover story, our newest contributor, Bob Robb, discusses his north Texas western whitetail experience, where patience was the key to success. In his featured article, Patrick Meitin, addresses what it takes to harvest a mature whitetail during the late season in Idaho. Additionally, Meitin offers a few pointers about how to silence your bow in his Bowhunting the West column. Scott Haugen is rattling up during the rut and offers his insight on which rattling techniques work best for western whitetails. In his Gear’N Up column, Haugen provides some pointers on picking the right boots for your hunting adventure. Finally, Mark Kayser provides invaluable information on how and why to hunt western whitetails in blizzard conditions.

In the Pro Staff section, Kevin Reese, discusses hunting deer off the beaten path to beat the late season blues. Daniel and Virginia Hawthorne have shared some pictures of a few giant bucks taken from their trail-cameras in eastern Washington; a must see, if you like big western whitetails. Finally, pro staff member, Shelton Boggess, shares his experiences about his first Coues hunt.

Our Juniors-Only author is Shelton Boggess’ little brother, Davis. The younger Boggess brother took a nice Coues buck on the last day of the season and shares his experience.

In the cover story, Editor, Darren Choate, expands on Geoff Lloyd’s hunt for a 122-inch Coues buck (as seen on www.westernwhitetail.tv) with information on how to be successful in the high country. Choate also provides his opinion of hunting behind a high fence, where the bucks have been genetically altered; let’s just say he’s NOT for it. In his featured article, Patrick Meitin, has a few early season whitetail strategies for hunters looking to pursue whitetails in the West this fall. Additionally, Meitin offers a few pointers about shooting from a treestand in his Bowhunting the West column. Scott Haugen takes you on an Idaho adventure, where he takes two bucks on the same hunt. In his Gear’N Up column, Haugen provides some pointers on how to repel mosquitoes using the ThermaCell. And, last but definitely not least, Mark Kayser details his hunt for a giant whitetail. Kayser battles the elements and hunting pressure, but comes out on top with a 200+ inch bruiser.

In the Pro Staff section, Virginia Hawthorne, offers her insight on how women can be a wife, a mother, and a hunter. Hawthorne details her hunt in eastern Washington, where she takes a dandy Northwest Whitetail, and shares the experience with her husband and her children. High school senior, Zane Graham, from West Texas let’s you know how to get your school work done, play sports, spend quality time with the family, so that you can spend as much time hunting as possible. Graham is adicted to hunting, but know that life has many facets.

Our Juniors-Only author this issue is Mark Kayser’s daughter, Katelyn. Katelyn tells us how she follows in her father’s footsteps, and tells us about her first buck that she took at the age of 12.

It’s all in the fall issue of Western Whitetail Magazine.

Trophy Bucks: Trail to a Trophy - Author, Mark Kayser, tells the tale of his pursuit of a 200-inch giant.

“I think he’ll go 180 inches or better,” one of my hunting partners stated with a straight face. That’s all it took; he had my full attention. I trusted his judgment on the buck he’d seen in September and he rarely added invented points to a score, but what intrigued me even more was his description of the buck. “He’s a main frame 5-pointer, but he has a lot of garbage points, especially on his G2 and brow area.”

A group of us hunted a particular South Dakota ranch and our unwritten rule was to respect efforts if someone was working an area for a big buck. Nevertheless, if nobody is hunting and someone else has an open weekend the entire ranch is available to hunt. Luckily, I had a week in late October open when none of the others would be free. It would be my one chance to try and tag the monster with my Mathews bow before the pressure of rifle season arrived.

The sighting of the monster whitetail three weeks earlier still weighed on my mind and I figured since the buck was mature he’d rarely hit the hayfields during legal shooting light. Scouting efforts by my partners verified that fact. Instead of hunting edges, I moved into the depths of the riparian zones and hunted a different kind of edge: interior edges. What are interior edges? These are edges created by past flooding, where water once coursed and left behind a grassy alleyway. Western whitetails follow these interior pathways, marking the edges with rubs, and scrapes just as if they were walking along a woodlot in Iowa.

Despite my 5-day effort, I couldn’t put a plan together to put me within bow range of the brute, much less lay eyes on him. On the last day of my hunt, I bow killed a 4 ½-year-old, 5-pointer after grunting it into 12 yards. A misting of Primetime Estrus scent in an open shooting lane held the buck perfectly for a TV-like ending. Although this meant the end of my bowhunting season for the giant, my rifle permit would give me another opportunity in mid-November…

Early Season Whitetail Strategies - Author, Patrick Meitin, offers strategies to pursue whitetail bucks in the early seasons across the West.

In much of “whitetaildom,” October represents the launch of bowhunting festivities, “early season” from the perspective of the average eastern deer hunter. Early, within a western reference, means something else altogether, normally indicating the still-blazing months of a fledgling fall, beginning with the final days of August into the start of September. No matter geographic location, early seasons give bowhunters an edge, pursuing bucks that have enjoyed a long summer’s reprieve and prove as calm as they will ever be.

This relative calm, delicate velvet antlers and thin summer coat produce whitetails regularly feeding in broad daylight, bucks sometimes wandering open ground in bachelor groups making them even more apparent.

Even when November rut dates are available in your favorite western state, early-season opportunities can prove just as productive—but only if you’ve done your homework. Too, in states where season openers occur before the second week in September, tagging a velvet-antlered buck is also possible—a fifty-fifty proposition in most cases. Scouting and preparing stand sites for early season success can turn into sweaty work, and warm weather produces short hunts at the very edges of day. Yet rewards often outweigh the inconvenience of wet, sticky stand-hanging sessions, buzzing mosquitoes (Thermacell and fine-mesh camouflage bug suits are better solutions than stinky insect repellents) and the added caution applied to assure you don’t ruin an area for future hunts by alerting bucks to the fact they’re being pursued.

The number-one goal in early-season whitetail hunting is keeping bucks in the dark regarding your intensions…

High Country Coues Bucks - Author, Darren Choate, provides insight into scouting and hunting Coues bucks in the high Country of the Southwest.

When I finally arrived at Geoff’s treestand, I found where he had hit the deer and headed off in the direction the buck went, following the blood trail. After about 200 yards, I found the two elated hunters admiring Geoff’s trophy Coues buck. As I too admired the trophy-of-a-lifetime, the guys filled me in on the complete story. After a couple of hours on stand, and at the same time, both Geoff and Josh caught the movement of a deer. The deer walked their way, and then paused at about 40 yards. Immediately, they realized it was the giant buck that Geoff had captured on camera the week before. “Oh my God, it’s him,” Geoff whispered. Cautiously, the buck continued toward Geoff’s location. At a mere 18 yards, the buck paused again, standing almost broadside. Geoff drew his bow and took aim. As he drew, the limb of his bow creaked ever so slightly. Amazingly, the buck heard the soft noise, took one more step and paused, exposing his vitals perfectly. Geoff released the arrow right on target. Geoff knew the shot was perfect. “I smoked him,” he exclaimed, and the celebration was on!

Excitedly, the two friends climbed from their stands, and started to track the deer. “Dude, he’s massive. “He’s a tank,” Josh told Geoff! As they trailed the deer, Geoff told Josh an amazing story. From the same stand site, Geoff shot his first Coues buck with a bow exactly one year prior on opening day as well. In fact, Geoff shot both bucks with the same arrow. “I just put on a new broadhead, and put it back in my quiver,” Geoff said. When they finally found the buck, the guys were in awe. “Look at all that horn,” Josh shouted! “Unbelievable!” was Geoff’s emotional response. Later, back in camp Josh scored the bruiser Coues buck. The buck gross scored just over 122-inches, a true buck-of-a-lifetime.
