Moving up in the World

So it has been a while since I have posted any blogs. Well I am working on this project for my fire department. We are a little slow in embracing new technology mostly because you have older people in the fire service so are not use to computer, email, pdas, and other great technology. Our Chief did want a laptop to learn how to use email which is GREAT! One thing that I have been wanting to do is move all of our forms to the internet. Well that is finally happening. You now can go into a password protected section on our website and fill out forms for vehicle repair, SCBA repair, communications, equipment, medical, and more. We are slow at getting up to speed but we are getting there. My next big project is to put in a server and setup a domain, tie all 3 of our stations together, web reporting, and the ability to submit fire reports from each station. That will probably be a challenge and will take some money but it will be great when we get it done. So if anyone has an old server or would like to donate one let me know.

Busy last 36 hours.

There are many people who think that volunteer firefighters aren't as good as career. Well let me tell you, in the last 36 hours we had 3 house fires. Most career fire departments that get calls like that have 2 different shifts that will handle it since they go 24 hours on and 48 off. Here is the time line of events.

Sunday around 1:30am.- Call comes in for house fire. Arrived on scene in 6 minutes to find a 2 story home vacant (for sell) flames shooting through the roof. We get the fire knocked down and save the house. Oh by the way we had 4 engines, 1 platform, and 1 rescue truck all on scene.

Cleared the scene around 3:30 am to go back to station to get trucks and personnel in service (trip to huddle house at 4:30 am.
Got to bed around 5:30 am only to get up around 7:15 to go to church to return some equipment.
Get back to bed around 10:30 am and slept till 2:30 pm.

Sunday around 9:30 pm second house fire. Arrived on-scene to find single story house heavy smoke showing. Get in and get it put out and get back home after getting trucks in service about 11:30 pm and bed about midnight.
Monday morning 6:30 am get called back to home and arrive on scene to find flames shooting out of attic. Myself and another guy pack out and go in and get it put out. Pretty awesome way to start a Monday morning. I leave to go back to station (while they are still out getting hot spots put out) to get ready for school at 8am and work afterward.

The majority of the same people responded to all 3 fires and proud to say that both houses are still standing. Now that is dedication. Way to go guys and girls!

Keep this in mind, volunteers do this with no pay and don't mind it, sacrifice from family, and don't get reimbursed for gas to travel to these calls.

Be Careful Where you drive

Last night on out way to fire training (in our fire truck) going down Darlington Street there is this gravel parking lot. Some dude decided to spin out in the gravel parking lot kicking up rocks and other debris and hitting out truck, chipping off paint all down the side and through rocks in the truck. So we decided to find this kid and confront him. Well all he could say was he was sorry. We were very luck one of the three of us didn't get hit in the eye or a window get busted. Lets just say he is in really big trouble. The truck in the picture was the one that got hit.

New TV

So I decided to bite the bullet Friday night and buy an LCD tv. I ended up going to Circuit City and getting the Sony Bravia 32 in 720p. It was a toss up between the Sony and the Samsung but I ended up with the Sony because it wasn't as wide and I have seen it in action with cable. So I brought and home and got it hooked up to regular Satellite and boy it looks good. Now I just have to see about getting HDTV.

Busy Saturday

Since my friend David Wike seemed to be posting about what he has been doing I figured I would give you an idea oh what I did on Saturday.

8:30am: Ran a Wreck
11:30 am: Woke up
Rest of the day:
Cleaned my room
Swept and mopped the station
Blew out and washed down the bays
Washed two fire trucks
Picked up trash in the ditch (I despise people who litter)
Went to supper with the family.

So I have to say it was a pretty busy Saturday.

Are you Captivated?

This weekend was the yearly SC BCM conference down at the beach. Over 800 college student were down there representing almost every college in SC along with some churches. This year's theme was Captivated. Worship was lead by Shane and Shane (which was awesome) and speakers David Platt and Tony Merida. These are a stinking awesome and hearing what they had to say challenged everyone. The big question is are you captivated for God? Are you willing to go out and stand up and serve God in missions. Are you listening to what he is telling you? I am going to leave it at that.
On the other hand it was a great time being able to spend time with old friends and make some new ones. Oh by the way I was told I look like David Platt. I will post the photo whenever I get it.

Tupperware Fire

So I had to opportunity last night to go down to Hemmingway to the Tupperware Fire. Talk about amazing. We go through these boring Incident Command classes hoping that you won't ever have to be involved but it was amazing to see Incident Command in use. With over 100 firefighters and fire departments from Darlington all the way down to the beach and the coordination that is involved blows my mind. So mabey sitting in a class for 16 hours might be worth it one day.

Well I am proud to say that I am now a certified first responder. To give you an idea this is a 40 hour course that teaches about First Aid, Basic Life support, CPR, and how to treat patients before the EMS Crew get to you. Want to know more? Just let me know.

Volunteer Firefighters

There is a lot of people whom think that career firefighters are better than volunteer. Well I see that as untrue. Here is something that was posted on Myspace about volunteers that you won't get from career. I could go in more depth about it but I won't. Enjoy!

Who are Volunteer Firefighters? They are your neighbor, the " guy/girl next door " They are husband, father or son, wife, mother or daughter They are the laborer, the store owner, the corporate executive, They are the jogger, sportsfan, hobbyist or handyman.... They are just like everyone else, save for one quality... They are one in one thousand who will risk their life to save yours; You'll see them waiting for the train and at the little league game, You'll see them in every house of worship, You'll see them in town, proudly wearing the emblem which shows they are a member of a fraternity dedicated to preserving life, Their car is the one backed into the driveway with the blue light on the dashboard, Their keys hang by the door and a pair of boots stand at their bed, They take their pager everywhere for fear they will be missed when they are needed; They won't complain much about life, they've seen too much suffering for that, They'll tell you the funny side and avoid the stories of pain, They'll be silent during the national anthem and salute when the flag goes by, They'll refer to their comrades as " brothers" and defend their reputaion, They'll sacrifice the best of times at the sound of the alarm, They'll return home to many cold dinners and " cold shoulders" too, They will be burned, cut and bruised, their life will be shortened, They never expect anything in return for there actions.. For all of this they will receive "no pay" Their only reward will be self esteem, You may never know them, but..... They'll be there when you need them. New Cell Phone again

So the phone I originally wanted came out and I believe I was the first one in Florence to get the phone. I traded my IC502 for the IC902. A ton more features than on the other phone. Blue tooth, MP3 player, micro sd card, high speed internet, and more. I ended up getting the 1 gig micro sd card. I haven't get broken down and gotten the blue tooth headset. I don't think I talk enough on the phone to get it but I might try it later on. The one thing that sucks about this phone is the battery life. Only last about 3 straight days so I ended up buy an extended battery however, when you get the extended battery you have to get a difference door. I guess they are trying to make all the money they can get.
