But sometimes it’s as menial as how great I feel in my new suit or my expensive sunglasses. And please take this with no (okay, little) judgment because there are things that aren’t important to me that are important to you and vice versa.

One Mom said it best when she’s reminded about why she can’t wear certain items of special clothing anymore, ones that were sentimental. Because now her body has changed to birth, feed and love her children, who are way more important than the clothes. Most everything holds some value to somebody, but the things that are immeasurable in value are where we really place our worth.

To all women reading this, who feel great with a new haircut, glowing in a fantastic new pair of shoes and radiant behind the wheel of a sweet new car, your value lies in who you are now not in what you look like, what you own or where you live. You make all of those things complete and noticeable, not the other way around. So, today treasure yourself, you are loved and irreplaceable.

Now don’t get me wrong, if you want to break into a field you are not that well schooled in, it is possible to learn skills and meet people, but it will take some effort.

A person who is has connections and influence themselves is the kind of person you want to connect with. How to meet people like that can be a challenge, but it can be done with some creativity and time.

Some ideas are volunteering your time to an organization or as a chair of fund raising event. Influential people typically are involved in charitable events or organizations and work closely with others who are influential as well. When you volunteer your time to an event or organization you are not only making a difference in others lives, but you are making an impression and connecting with people who can become a lifelong business acquaintance or friend.

Another great idea for meeting a mover or shaker is offering some of your own time or services voluntarily to their company. This will give you a chance to meet other folks, and give a lasting impression of what kind of successful business you run yourself.

And finally, in order to connect with others that you want to get to know better yourself, participate in activities in your community. It may be attending the local theater, participating as a sponsor in the local flower show, or attending a local sporting event, where you’re guaranteed to meet others who are making a difference as well. Work from home businesses are no different than other types of businesses, and meeting other influential people is a great way to spur your business forward. Take the leap and get involved, you’ll notice a difference.

Now I will say that it’s probably more normal to compare your children due in part to how stringently doctors monitor their weight gain, height and even head size.  To not pay attention to how are children are doing in comparison to other children their age would be nearly impossible.

That’s why when I read Mommy Revolution’s post about being a little happy at other kid’s failure made me feel a little bit better.  I want to clarify that she wasn’t elated at someone’s injury or failure, but she was able to celebrate a little bit over the lessening competition in her daughter’s gymnastics meet.

I unfortunately, have found myself in position similar to that, where I’m glad for my daughter’s success, even if it means someone else’s son or daughter has not done as well. I’m not proud of this and really try to empathize with the children and their parents, but it’s also refreshing to see that I’m normal.

I thought that once I hit adulthood, life would get easier. Boy, was I wrong! Life is full of surprises and challenges. I try to take it all in stride though and consider how short life really is. In the long run, I want to remember the simple pleasures life had to offer and not how well I did or didn’t do at the things that really won’t last.

Focusing on one area where there’s a large population of high need individuals, that would probably be downtown Cincinnati.  Cincinnati is a remarkable city with beautiful wonderful buildings, a broad range of performing arts and some really great restaurants, but within the same few miles, there are families and individuals who are living in poverty, suffering from being under-educated and often addicted to drugs and/or alcohol.

Downtown Cincinnati would be the perfect place for a program such as the E200 sponsored by the Small Business Administration.  “The goal of the SBA Emerging 200 initiative is to identify 200 inner-city businesses across the country that show a high potential for growth-and to provide them the network, resources and motivation required to build a sustainable business of size and scale within a designated inner-city geographic location.”

A program with the expertise and knowledge that the Small Business Administration could offer would promote businesses who could impact the economic structure of a city like Cincinnati, could spur job growth (which in Cincinnati unemployment is currently above 8%) and could connect businesses with amazing resources close by.

If you are considering starting a business, of any size or in any area, the Small Business Administration is loaded with resources and information to help you get started and be successful.  Tap into places like the Economic Empowerment Center, as there are several typically within each city and start connecting with others.  The road to success isn’t always costly nor does it require an expensive education, but being resourceful could give you every advantage you need to develop a small home base business opportunity that will make a difference in your community.
