Holiday at Goodman Theatre is a new adaptation of Philip Barry’s 1928 romantic comedy, reimagined by Tony Award–winning playwright Richard Greenberg and directed by Goodman’s legendary director, Robert Falls. The play presents the wealthy Seton family on New York’s Upper East Side, and introduces a young charismatic newcomer to the family whose romance with one of the Seton daughters upends their comfortable world and exposes tensions around money, ambition, and happiness.

This production keeps the story’s 1920s roots while giving the dialogue and characters a contemporary feeling as this story is set just before the pandemic hits. As a result, the story highlights the timeless question of whether we should work to live or live to work.

Joining in the conversation are two of the three Seton siblings: Bryce Gangel (playing Linda Seton and well known to Chicago audiences from performances at Court Theater, Remy Bumppo, Rivendell and more) and Wesley Taylor (playing Ned Seton but well known to Chicago for the pre-Broadway run of Addams Family, and also Broadway turns on Spongebob and Rock of Ages, as well as TV hit shows like Only Murders in the Building and Smash).

Title: “Little Shop of Horrors” is a BIG night of FUN!

Little Shop first premiered Off-Off-Broadway in 1982 as a workshop and made it to off-Broadway at the Orpheum Theatre the same year, playing over 2200 performances; then it deservedly went on to Broadway in 2003 and it’s been produced and performed around the country ever since. But Marriott Lincolnshire offers a special production (as they often do), by insuring smiles on the audience members’ faces from young to older, and skillfully handling the technical challenges of working in the round, especially to make the ever-growing Audrey II man eating plant function beautifully. Perhaps most importantly, the cast is a familiar to Chicago group of solid well-known performers who add a large spirit and connect strongly with the audience. 

The show is nostalgic, but still fresh in many ways.

The production is sharp and clean, but brings a refreshing sense of humor, warmth and heart to this long-standing almost cult musical. Candidly, there are uncomfortable moments in a show that is 40 years old and addresses domestic violence with a touch of humor; it might have played back in the early ‘80’s but today, it’s difficult to watch, yet the cast keeps a lid on the humor of it but performs the script as written and required to make the plot work. The cast handles it well.

The show is certainly a bit campy but the cast’s chemistry is electric. Indeed, this sincere Seymour (played so warmly by the great Jackson Evans), and sensitive Audrey (another Chicago fave, Maya Rowe) bring genuine emotional warmth, allowing the absurdity and satire to coexist beautifully with its vulnerable love story. The show also works so well because of the talents of mark David Kaplan (Mr. Mushnik), Andrew Mueller (playing dentist Orin and so many others so well that you don’t even know it’s the same actor on stage!) and the amazing bass voice of the Lorenzo Rush, Jr. who we only hear until his curtain call) This cast gets the show’s darkly comic rhythm but perform with impressively nuanced performances, grounding the outrageous premise in authentic human relationships.

And Audrey II—may be a plant, but exudes life through inventive puppetry control and maneuvering and rightfully stands as a character in its own right.

Marriott Lincolnshire’s production is a triumph of imagination and theatrical craft, making it a must-see opener for this season’s opener at one of our beloved theaters.

Many people mistakenly believe that the AIDS and HIV crises are over. Nothing is further from the truth. AIDS Foundation Chicago continues to provide care and housing assistance for so many Chicagoans who may struggle to make ends meet while they continue their battle against HIV. It is true that medications are better and more helpful today than ever, but the need to help continues.

And so….for the 24^th year, it is time for World of Chocolate!! This year, held on Friday February 27^th at the amazing Artifact Events space at 4325 Ravenswood Ave in Chicago. The proceeds go to assist AIDS Foundation Chicago with its mission and services.

The night is incredibly fun! Everyone’s favorite childhood classic film is Mary Poppins! Based on the writings of P.J. Travers, the story underwent significant development and creating thanks to the work, not just of Walt Disney, but of the Sherman Brothers who wrote all of the classic music. Now, a new book, “Making Mary Poppins: The Sherman Brothers, Walt Disney, and the Creation of the Classic Film” by Todd James Pierce takes us inside all that transpired to make the classic film.

Julie Andrews was NOT the first choice for Mary Poppins and in fact, author Pamela Travers did not like her in the role! Why? What did Walt Disney say when Travers approached him at the Hollywood premiere to tell him she was ready to do some heavy editing? And so much more…

It’s not easy to layer humor with heartbreak but the perfect pacing and timing of this show, incredibly directed by Chicago directing legend Lili-Anne Brown, achieves that delicate balance. Never falling too far into satire or sentiment, every scene is played to breathe, laugh and sometimes bite.

It’s the balance of emotions and character traits in this play that makes it SO good. It’s laugh-out-loud hysterical but so intensely thought provoking that you will find yourself reconsidering your views on a very volatile topic. This cast plays their characters to perfection. With intensity, charm, idealism, warmth and a bit of quirky eccentricity, these are characters living personal contradictions.

Bravo to Timeline Theater for creating another classic production for which they have been known in this community for nearly 30 years. Timeline always ties its productions to critical, if not well-known moments in history; in this play Spector finds that he has tripped over and into current events to craft a play you won’t soon forget and will urge your friends to be sure NOT to miss.

Siah Berlatsky is a local playwright who, at the age of 15, began to write a funny sophisticated play called “Malapert Love.” Completed when she was 21, who would imagine that the work would be performed in Chicago at the Artistic Home where it was awarded the Jeff Award for Best New Work in 2023 and THEN…and invitation to launch off-Broadway in NYC. This happened because the play was selected by The Tank NYC, an award-winning non-profit performing arts space, as one of five fall Core Productions. This great story reflects the works, themes and techniques of Shakespeare written centuries ago…but which resonates with the modern audience.

A great story of local Chicago’s Very Own artist does well!

There’s little doubt that Stephen Sondheim has created some of the best musical theater ever written. And now, Madkap Productions presents Stephen Sondheim’s classic “Company “ at the Skokie Theatre from February 6 to March 1^st.

The original Broadway production was nominated for 14 Tony awards and won 6 and its no wonder why as it includes songs like Ladies Who Lunch, Side By Side By Side and so many more classics.

On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed bachelor Robert contemplates his unmarried status. Over the course of a series of dinners, drinks and even a wedding, his friends explain the pros and cons of taking on a spouse; the forever single Robert is forced to question his adamant retention of bachelorhood.

“Stereophonic” is a dramatic play that follows a fictional rock band in 1976 as they navigate the hectic and complex process of recording their new album, their second album, and at the same time, exploring fame, conflict, and artistic struggle.

The play tells the story of an unnamed British-American rock band seeking superstardom and amidst the various dynamics that ensue.

Of course, language evolves over time….it should be seen as a living breathing thing is often a reflection of the time and place in which it was created. This book goes well beyond trying to understand what is right and wrong in language usage. It explains why things we say may appear to be wrong but have become acceptable. In addition, the way words are a reflection of the times in which famous plays or movies were written is discussed. Can you being a sentence with “And” or “But?” Is it appropriate to say “irregardless” and can you say you could care less when the truth is, you couldn’t care less.

There’s no Masking this Exceptional Phantom of the Opera

The new national tour of The Phantom of the Opera feels less like a revival and more like a return to the original production that took Broadway by storm in 1988. There have been many tours and changes thru the decades, but it may be that the closing of the original production on Broadway which ran for decades gave the producers the idea that it was time for the country to experience what Broadway goers did so many years ago. Most notably, the success of this production is clearly anchored by Isaiah Bailey’s commanding, emotionally rich performance as the Phantom. Between his performance and the amazingly strong supporting cast, it’s a time to see Phantom if you never have, and time to return to the music of the night if you have. There’s little wonder why this show is considered one of the great Broadway classics of all time.

This production does not re-invent the original Phantom. It doesn’t have to; it respects the original but with a current strength in production that will make the returning fan and the newcomer very glad they came!

Michael Crawford will always be the original Phantom, but you’d be hard pressed to describe Isaiah Bailey’s performance as anything short of character defining, deeply detailed and filled with passion and emotion. We feel his pain as he yearns obsessively for Christine (played here by Jordan Lee Gilbert) and we feel a sense of pity for him as well, but not hatred. And that accomplishment is critical for this portrayal to work with the audience.

Jordan Lee Gilbert’s Christine is strong and enhances her relationship to and with the Phantom and Raoul as well. Which will win her heart? Could it be that she has love for both men?

This touring production uses the revitalized staging first seen in London, but exuding of the original Broadway production. It’s all here: the grand chandelier, the Phantom’s lair and indeed the setting for the masquerade…they all serve as strikingly visual experiences.  In short, this national tour is strong and clearly respects the strong production values and talents audiences have come to expect from this classic musical and this show exceeds all expectations!

Amadeus is a powerful, intense theatrical experience and exactly the kind of play Steppenwolf is meant to perform!  It is an unforgettable and breathtaking production; you have until January 25^th to see it!

Joining in the conversation about this Peter Shaffer Tony and Academy Award winning classic are the leads: Ian Barford (playing Salieri) known for his award winning work at Steppenwolf and beyond, including the Tony Award winning “August, Osage County.” A true Chicago treasure on our stages, Ian talks about the complexity that was Salieri, through whose eyes we watch the play unfold.

REVIEW: Amadeus at Steppenwolf Theatre

Amadeus is a powerful, intense theatrical experience and exactly the kind of play Steppenwolf is meant to perform!  This unforgettable and breathtaking production reminds us exactly why Steppenwolf is the crown jewel of Chicago theater and has been for 50 years. Some might see Amadeus as a period drama, but it is so much more than that…..it’s a deeply rooted story about human ambition and motivation and the fragile balance between talent and potential and mediocrity and despair.

This production is a masterful blend of history, drama and emotion that is jaw dropping from the opening scene. The production is genius telling a story about genius….with a blend of jealousy and a demand for immortality. Directed to perfection by the legendary director emeritus of Goodman Theatre Robert Falls who shows why he is one of the best directors in Chicago.

The dynamic between Salieri and Mozart is vibrant with every glance and look filled with a conflict between admiration and deep jealousy.

Ian Barford has done a lot of impressive work on this stage (and many others)and his performance here is truly extraordinary. It’s layered, deep and transcends both a desire for sympathy and envy; juxtaposed with David Darrow’s amazing portrayal of Mozart (and Steppenwolf debut) which radiates with energy and brilliance coupled with a sense of adolescence and pure charm. I hope he loves Chicago because he will be back!

The performances of the ensemble are picture perfect. This production brings back many Steppenwolf legends including Robert Breuler, Ora Jones, Yasen Peyankov and Joey Slotnick…it’s as though the ensemble knew this was a cast they needed to join!

The set is both simple but with complex elements such as an amazing portrait as part of the ceiling and chairs that actually serve to establish the atmosphere of 18^th century Vienna.

The sound design is stunning. The use and precise timing of the music and choral….just a beautifully haunting score that reminds us of Mozart’s actual compositions and their magnificence. This story that hits our senses with powerful impact.

An evening of Amadeus will remind you why you love theater so much….and why Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre is a master at what it does.

Urinetown the Musical premiered off-Broadway in 2001 and was so successful that it transferred to Broadway later that year. And it’s been playing ever since throughout the country and now enjoying sell out crowds at Theo Ubique Theater housed in the Fred Anzevino Theater in Evanston.

Urinetown is a satirical musical about an unknown city imposes a government ban on the use of private toilets which leads to a water chortage3 and the need to charge people to pee…all under the evil policies of the Urine Good Company until a young hero, Bobby Strong, rises up to save the day. The show makes fun of the traditional musical with irony, but with an absurd premise that satirizes capitalism, corporate greed and corruption in government. It’s a heck of a lot of fun.

Joining in the conversation are: Maya Tanaka Allwardt (as Little Sally) who makes her Theo debut, and is known for her work in improv and sketch comedy; Luke Nowakowski: (playing Bobby Strong) making his Theo debut and has been recently seen in 42 Balloons, Lord of the Rings (in Chicago and New Zealand), Titanique, and much more. And, Drew Longo (portraying the villain, Caldwell Cladwell) has appeared at Theo before in “The Lady’s Not for Burning,” as well as Mary Poppins and Million-Dollar Quartet at Metropolis).

REVIEW: Urinetown

Urinetown the Musical is chock full of wit, laughs, imagination and a keenly talented ensemble cast! From the very first note, the stage bursts with energy! The lyrics and music are joyfully over-the-top in the best way!

The production’s razor-sharp satire came on to the off-Broadway stage in 2001 followed by a transfer to Broadway; I saw this show both off and on Broadway and was so thrilled to see that Theo was going to put on this production under the capable directing hands of Danny Kapinos with fun choreography by the legendary Brenda Didier which keeps the pace brisk, the moves well done. Most importantly, the tone beautifully blends a sense of slapstick with true underlying poignancy.

And now, more than 2 decades after its debut, its underlying commentary on corporate greed, social responsibility and the price of revolution continue to ring with uncanny current relevance.

And who doesn’t appreciate moments of homage which this show strongly gives to both Les Miserables (another tale of revolution) but also, more subtlety to West Side Story (you have to listen carefully to the music to catch it) another tale of class warfare….you see, you can take this show in on its surface, or you can dig more deeply and see the reflection of our past.

The show could have been a one note parody but rather it bursts with energy and an embrace of the absurdity of the story – a dystopian city where citizens must pay to use public bathrooms- never taking its eye off of biting humor. Pay attention to almost every line and you’ll hear the cuts on individualism with the reference to so many as so-and-so…and those with the dream to overturn the tyrants…well, they are often told to “keep their head out of the clouds…” Funny? Yes. Impactful? Indeed.

My criticism is a bit of a nature of the beast. Theo founder Fred Anzevino always wanted the productions to be immersive, keeping the audience as an intimate part of the evening…and that is always accomplished. However, with several mini-stages set out in their small space, some of the cocktail tables sit pretty much center stage and truthfully, the amount of neck and body turning one has to do to be sure you follow the action can be uncomfortable. Again, the nature of the beast in this fabulous space but it may be a concern for some patrons.

I love this cast! Luke Nowakowski as Bobby brings the necessary innocence required but with a strength of determination and a fantastic voice that shows his power. Indeed, every voice in this Theo cast is strong and formidable as they always are at Theo…but a special shout out have to go to Little Sally strongly played by Maya Tanaka Allwardt, Mrs.  Pennywise by Alicia Berneche both making their Theo debut (welcome aboard!) and Officer Lockstock who walks thru the narrative in a humorous and captivating way…played by Ryan Stajmiger. 

Urinetown the Musical, consistently reminds the audience that great humor can also bring uncomfortable truths to light, and at Theo, it’s likely you’ll delve deeper as you watch and thoroughly enjoy the production.

Anthony Rapp is one of Chicago’s Very Own! Born in Chicago, he’s now returned to live here AND perform a holiday cabaret: Anthony Rapp “Home for the Holidays”, a cozy cabaret….December 17-20th at the Lookingglass Theatre. A beautiful evening in an intimate and fabulously Chicago historic space.

Rapp is known, of course for originating the role of Mark Cohen in the Broadway production of “Rent” and later reprised the role in the movie adaptation and Broadway tour. He also appeared on Broadway in “If/Then” originating the role of Lucas in this musical also starring Idina Menzel. He played Charlie Brown in the 1999 Broadway revival of “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown.” On TV, he’s known for playing Commander Paul Stamets in “Star Trek: Discovery,” and also appeared in the classic movies: Road Trip, A Beautiful Mind and Adventures in Babysitting.”

In this intimate evening, Rapp brings in some local Chicago talent to join him in presenting songs of the holiday season and more. Will he perform songs from Rent and Charlie Brown? The Uptown Theatre was one of Chicago’s grand movie palaces! Built in 1925, this 4,300 seat theater was one of the country’s great movie palaces. Its history is related in a new coffee table book: “The Uptown: Chicago’s endangered Movie Palace.” Home to silent movies, the first talkies and live shows including the Marx Brothers, Ella Fitzgerald, rock legends like Prince, The Grateful Dead and Rod Stewart….an amazing venue. But now, the building has been in limbo having suffered water and other damage through the decades.

Shuttered since 1981, there is a significant need for renovation and restoration. And that is the work of Friends of the Uptown which works to restore this national landmarked building to its grand days.

Here, Paul chats with the book’s co-author Robert Loerzel, a journalist and photographer who relates in great deal the history of this magnificent structure and what needs to happen to save it. Check out this expanded interview here which goes beyond the original WGN+ stream with Mr. Loerzel.

A 1990 musical based on the 1886 novella by Robert Louis Stevenson is a jaw dropping production from Kokandy presented at the Chopin Theater. The story of a doctor who seeks to find the other side of himself….is he seeking another personality or just part of who he is in the first place?

Set in the intimate setting of Chopin’s mainstage theater (seating about 130) yet complete with a 15 piece orchestra and voices that will knock your socks off! This Kokandy production of Jekyll and Hyde undeniably matches if not exceeds any national tour of this show which likely ran in much larger venues. It is the intimacy of this production with full production values that makes this an unparalleled experience.

Derek Van Barham has broken the barriers of how a powerful production can blow the roof off of a small theater with the impact of a full orchestra and incredible cast.

Barham’s creation is not just true to a fine Broadway quality production but likely exceeds any previous efforts to mount this difficult and complex show. It has heart and vision and yet a sense of simplicity in its set.

David Moreland (Cruel Intentions; American Psycho) and Ava Stovall (Alice by Heart) have a larger than life presence which is stunning and jaw dropping. They slay the Leslie Bricusse/Frank Wildhorn score which led to ovations after several numbers.

Moreland’s portrayal of Jekyll and Hyde is intense and chilling. Stovall’s break out role assures we will see this leading actor in many shows to come.

How Barham crafted a full production with essentially no props except for a table and yet creates the appearance of surgical procedures, character transformations and location changes are among the wonderous feats of this production.

The voices of the ensemble blended like a finely tuned chorus…each present in character and persona even when just there to dress the atmosphere of the scene.

But it was the mood and atmosphere that this production creates…perfect lighting and an orchestra that equaled any downtown production. That is saying a lot for a show mounted in a humble space with limited stage, but Van Barham makes it work to perfection.

I couldn’t wait to tell people about this production and urge them to make their way to the Chopin Theatre by December 21st to see this unforgettable production.

The Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus (CGMC) has been entertaining audiences year-round for over 40 years. But it’s also a place of community, warmth and acceptance for those “in” the show and those watching it from the audience.

This Christmas, CGMC presents “Holly Dolly Christmas” – a Holiday Tribue to the legendary Dolly Parton. Nearly 250 singers and dancers will strut fabulous costumes and throw in some camp for a show that only CGMC knows how to do. Parton is a legend, but CGMC is a Chicago legendary institution.

Attention Neil Diamond fans! The great musical “A Beautiful Noise: the Neil Diamond Musical” returns to Chicago at the Chicago Cadillac Palace Theatre until November 30^th. The role of the younger Neil Diamond is played on this national tour by American Idol winner Nick Fradiani.

Give my regards to Broadway…a famous phrase which embodies our forever love of the Great White Way where musical theater has thrived for over a century. Now, the history of Broadway Musical theater is exhaustively documented in a new book by David Armstrong: “Broadway Nation: How Immigrant, Jewish, Queer, and Black Artists Invented the Broadway Musical.”

But just how did Broadway become Broadway? What existed before the advent of the Broadway musical? And why is Broadway located where it is?

The important role of various communities from immigrants to LGBTQ and women, have created and progressed the musical as we know it today. From it’s Silver age, thru a Golden Age and now the modern musicals which tackle social issues, share history…the musical is a critical part of our culture.

Improv takes some really special skills. Actor/comedian and improv talent Connor Ratliff is the son of a veteran improv performer and now he returns to the very theater in which his dad performed. Connor will be in Chicago to present two different shows at two different venues.

It’s hard to define the type of entertainment that is presented at the McAninch Arts Center (MAC) on the Campus of the College of DuPage because it is SO varied and full, that there’s something for everyone.

In this interview with Director of the MAC, Diana Martinez, the upcoming calendar for October through December is reviewed. From the comedy of Paul Reiser and Pat Tomasulo, to musical tributes to Neil Diamond, George Michael and the Carpenters, to a Christmas filled with the holiday music of the a cappella sensation group Voctave and the magical Salt Creek ballet production of “The Nutcracker” with the New Philharmonic.

The programs offer a variety and make a great evening out.

The Sound of Music is one of the most beloved musicals of all time. Sandy Rustin was raised in Chicago, attended New Trier and Northwestern University. Soon the success began for this Chicagoan whose talents include acting, voiceover and most critically, award winning playwrighting. As an actor, she toured as Sandy in the national tour of Grease and also appeared in “I Love you, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” along with a host of television programs like “Inside Amy Schumer,” “Law and Order,” and “All My Children”

Choosing to raise a family, Sandy decided to concentrate her efforts on playwriting and the list is a mile long. From her adaptation of the classic movie/game “CLUE” for the stage and her adaptation of “Mystic Pizza” from the screen, she also wrote “The Cottage” an original comedy that was directed by Jason Alexander (George from Seinfeld) and which starred Eric McCormack (Will and Grace) and Laura Bell Bundy.’ Plus so many more including the recent hit “Always Something There” which enjoyed its world premiere at Marriott Lincolnshire’s Theatre in the Round.

Sandy agreed to an extended chat about her career and how the various pieces came about and fit together. A true Chicago story…..quite clearly on her way to Chicago legendary status in a career that has a long way to go!!

JJ Niemann is a rising star, or perhaps a shooting star in the Broadway and theater world. This delightful show is a musical comedy based on a true story about a con man who chases his dreams and committing lots of crimes along the way with a hope of not getting caught. Making fraudulent checks, pretending to be a doctor, a lawyer and even a pilot, the REAL Frank Abagnale, Jr. lived this life in his late teens and book writer Terrence McNally and music/lyric writers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman have crafted a very fun production that works very well in the round at Marriott.

JJ Niemann has a huge following because of his presence on social media where he has become the King of Theater Tik Tok as evidenced by the long lines waiting to meet him each night at the stage door after the show.

The Catch of the Musical Theater Season!

I saw the original Broadway production of “Catch Me if You Can and even met the real Frank Abagnale, Jr.  who attended that evening. The unlikely story might be considered unbelievable and impossible…if it weren’t true! And what makes it believable is the perfectly cast JJ Niemann who has the charisma, charm and energy to pull off a character that would and perhaps should be seen as a bad guy, a con artist of the worst kind. But, you have to remember that con men can only be successful if they possess the charm and credibility to sell their con to a myriad of people. And the real Abagnale lived the life of an airline pilot, a lawyer, a physician (one afraid of the site of blood no less) and makes it worth. We believe Frank because we accept and love Niemann.

And performing as the perfect counterbalance to Niemann’s Abagnale is FBI agent Carl Hanratty strongly portrayed by Nathaniel Stampley. Even Hanratty, we believe, lives with contradiction as he knows Abagnale is a bad guy…but he likes him…he even wants to help him turn his life around.

The supporting ensemble, the strong orchestrations, and one of the best sets Marriott Lincolnshire has ever assembled, including a fantastic projection in the round screen, lets us know where we are and when it is. A great score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman with a book by the legendary Terrence McNally (Ragtime, Master Class, Love! Valour! Compassion!) perhaps don’t play the undesirable side of a true con man, but then again, why would they? It makes sense that the audience understand how Frank did his cons, how he was so convincing….and so, we get convinced as well and get just how these techniques can work even on the smartest of us!

The show performs in the round which presents challenges for the cast to make the magic work over the course of 360 degrees…and they do it well!

And do not forget to have some dinner before the show (or after the matinee) at The Three Embers Restaurant on site. Three Embers has transformed into the Pan Am Restaurant offering a mirror based on the First Class cuisine offered at the time these events took place in the 1960’s. Plus, choices that reflect the various cities Abagnale visited to pull off his con efforts. A fabulous menu of filet, seafood, risotto, and so much more. Fabulous!

Catch Me if you can is the perfect date night and fun for the family as well….Marriott is known for top notch productions and they raise the bar once again.

This show is quite the catch!!! Just be sure that YOU Catch it…while you can…you have until October 19^th!

The conversation includes the film’s writer, director and editor: Noah Bashore, and the lead actors: Kyle Patrick (American Psycho, Godspell) as Walter and Jessie Carl (multiple musical theater productions including A Chorus Line) as Grace. These two actors must and do carry the movie through it’s storyline and emotions and their relationship.

Indeed I’d call it a Bi-Partisan Laughfest full of music, song and humor people will enjoy on both sides of the aisle!

Pippin is one of the great fun musicals, the work of the magnificent Stephen Schwartz (“Wicked,” “Godspell”) and now a new production presented by MadKap Productions at the Skokie Theatre, a nicely rehabbed venue perfect for intimate musical productions.

Joining in the conversation is Pippin himself (played by Connor Hensley Schroeder) and an interesting twist on the role of Lead Player (made famous by Ben Vereen on Broadway) here split between two fine actors: Andrew Buel and Hannah Mary Simpson whose interpersonal dynamics add great unexpected fun. Ms Uggams was most recently seen in Season 3, Ep 7 of The Guilded Age, but she is legendary for playing Kizzy in Roots, Blind Al in the Deadpool movies, her Tony Award winning performance in “Hallelujah, Baby,” and her powerful performance as the Mother in American Fiction (2023). From decades of small roles and comedy shows to making it big on HBO’s hit series “Somebody, Somewhere“, Jeff Hiller is now nominated for his first Emmy for his portrayal of Joel in its 3 season run. The road to fame wasn’t easy for Jeff, as he details in his new memoir, “Actress of a Certain Age: My Twenty-Year Trail to Overnight Success”.

In this podcast, Paul and Jeff explore his life growing up as a young, gay man (and hopeful pastor) in the southern region of the country known as Texas and why it took so long to make it as a successful comedian and TV star compared to child stars like Drew Barrymore, much of which is found in the pages (and footnotes) of his new book.

Jeff’s connection with his character Joel in “Somebody, Somewhere” goes much deeper than words on the script and we learn through the course of the interview just how much of his personal story comes through in the book and into his character in the show.

Paul goes behind the curtain with the managing artistic director of the Fine Arts Building and Studebaker Theater, Jacob Harvey and Keir Graff, author of the new book, Chicago’s Fine Arts Building: Music, Magic, and Murder, in which he takes you behind the scenes of one of Chicago’s cultural landmarks. There is little doubt that the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award  for Best Play-winning work Angels in America by Tony Kushner is one of the most important plays written in decades if not the last century. A seven hour-experience (separated into two parts: Part One: Millennium Approaches, and Part Two: Perestroika) can be seen over two days or all in one day. The play cleverly weaves together realism with fantasy to create a complex examination of the social, sexual and religious issues facing the country that resonate powerfully today. Set in the 1980s and early 1990s, we see the challenge of the AIDS crisis and how a variety of classic characters, including both fictional and historical figures, face them.

The difficult production is taken on by the fabulous Chicago-based theater company Invictus Theatre Company led by Artistic Director Charles Askenaizer.

Charles joins the conversation as director of the production and is joined by cast members: Grant Carriker (playing Louis Ironson), Joe Bushell (playing Joe Pitt), Anne Trodden (playing Joe’s wife Harper Pitt), Brenden Zweibel (understudy for the role of Prior Walter), and Shane Roberie (understudy for the role of Roy Cohn).

Hitch*Cocktails is a fully improvised comedic thriller which invites the audience to laugh and enjoy while partaking (if they wish) in a drinking game, while the cast creates it all on stage…also while partaking in drinking throughout the show. Fiddler on the Roof is one of the great classic musicals of all time. The story of Tevye the milkman, his family and his community is a tale of traditions that define his faith and confront the threats of  a modern world that challenge his beloved home town of Anatevka. The stunning aspect is how relevant the story remains to the times in which we live now. The show has powerful meaning for audiences to be sure.

Joining in the conversation are Sam Nachison (playing the lead role of Tevye), Mitzi Smith (playing his wife Golde), and playing the three oldest daughters who cause Tevye to make the decisions which challenge his faith and traditions: Madison Uphoff as Tzeitel, Elissa Newcorn as Hodel and Madison Jaffe-Richter as Chava. This cast understands the import of the show and of their characters.

“Parade“, a musical, is based on a true story centered around the 1913 story of Leo Frank, a Jewish factory manager who is wrongfully accused of the rape and murder of Mary Phagan. The trial, verdict and how things actually played out in history are set out in this powerful production thru dialogue and music.

Don’t let this Parade pass you by!! This amazing Tony Award winning Revival is stunning, powerful, thought provoking and incredibly timely today.

This revival production of Parade has a classic score by Jason Robert Brown (Bridges of Madison County and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil) which is captivating…the lyrics, the music…brilliant.

The story is true. Leo Frank, a Jewish man is wrongfully accused of murdering a young girl in 1913 Georgia; the musical takes on, not only the story, but also sets out the deep rooted themes of antisemitism, racism and so much more which all resonate strongly today. The story may be a century old, but the underlying issues continue today.

The performances are universally superb. Max Chernin (who was part of the original Revival cast on Broadway) as Leo Frank will leave you with little doubt that he understands this actual historical figure and presents him with a sense of determination and intensity that is compelling. He is matched by Talia Suskauer (formerly Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway) who plays Leo’s wife Lucille Frank. There are characters you might want to call horrible people but they have to be viewed within the racist pressures of that day. Some think today’s jury and justice system is rigged, well, it doesn’t compare to what apparently went on back in 1915 at trial time.

There is an historic figure who can likely be viewed as a good guy. Chris Shyer as Governor Stayton is sincere and presents a politician as we wish all could be these days.

Parade is impactful….it will have you up thinking and talking about it through the night…and it has many a lesson to teach us asking the questions that should have been asked back in that time.

The story is real…these people were real…and you can look them up and check them out and decide for yourself who committed the murder of a young Mary Phagan. Will we ever know? Does the production answer the question? Only one way to find out….march right over to get tickets and see this powerful Parade!

Chicago Shakes does it again with another world premiere that is powerful and impactful. Chilina Kennedy embodies the legendary Billie Jean King in a way that truly gives us the sense that we are hearing the story from King herself.

One might think that a play called Billie Jean will be little more than a biography of the legendary tennis player who turned the tennis world on its head to achieve equal pay and equal respect for women in the sport. You’d be wrong. The story goes well beyond weaving the moments of King’s life that helped shape her to what almost amounts as a self-help course designed to help everyone find their inner strength, one step at a time.

The word Love of course is the term used to reference that moment in tennis before anything has been scored or earned. But in this play, Love is far more than a tennis scoring term. It is the emotion that propels Billie Jean King through her relationships with others, but most significantly with tennis.

Chilina Kennedy truly embodies the spirit of King and with wig and costuming that helps create a powerful illusion that you are watching Ms. King herself move thru her life. It connects…it works.

The supporting cast is all strong and fill a variety of roles (including I might add, a score board which almost takes on the role of a character in and of itself for the information conveyed and the emotional videos that empower the play’s final moments which reminds us that even in the  face of victory, the battle goes on.

For members of the LGBTQ+ community, the impact of the show is especially powerful. From unaccepting parents who must choose to love… or not…. their child for who they are, from complex professional pressures, to the pull of an orientation at a time when society was less accepting. Indeed, it’s hard to watch this play and not think of the struggles of the trans community which is the latest target of inexplicable bigotry.

The play is powerful…the performances are all way above the net and hitting their marks….and the message of acceptance and personal strength resonates as powerful today as it did thru the decades in which King pursued her goal to be the absolute best.

Billie Jean is not to be missed…..you’ll leave the theater feeling uplifted and empowered to be the best you can be….and most importantly, to live the life you are meant to live.

It’s Game…. Set … and Match for Billie Jean…and us!

Sandy Rustin (Clue, Mystic Pizza) was raised in Chicagoland and has created a tribute to the work of John Hughes through her own high school focused story which highlights the music of the 1980’s. “Always Something There”  is enjoying it’s World Premiere at Marriott Lincolnshire Theatre and stars Chicago’s very own Heidi Kettenring playing the role of Samantha Craig as an adult, and Christina Priestner who plays Samantha as a teen. Along with a fabulous supporting cast, it tells the story of 45 year old Samantha who wakes up on the morning of her 45^th birthday to find she has once again become her 18 year old self and her former high school world.

Can she relive her senior year of high school in suburban Chicago? Can she reshape and change her teenage choices? The story is powered by a score of hits by Madonna, Whitney Houston, Culture Club, The Go-Go’s and more….indeed this Chicago-raised playwright has penned a nostalgic love letter both to the 80’s and indeed, her home town, Chicago!

Beauty and the Beast: The Musical is the best Date night, Family Night, and Impressive Production that will have you on your feet cheering several times during the show!

Truly, No one knows how to create theater magic better than Disney! You will ask: How did they do it?

But, They never tell….and that’s the magic!

Costumes are gorgeous, lighting and orchestration powerful….but nothing interferes with the majestic voices of this spectacular cast.

And..what a cast: Kyra Belle Johnson has the melodic range anyone would hope for in “Belle” (her parents even thought ahead to give her a middle name of Belle!) Fergie LO. Philippe has the charm that lets us believe he is not the evil creature the town despises, we indeed root for him for sure! And a special mention of Kathy Voytko who  makes the character of Mrs. Potts her own. She has large shoes to fill in Angela Lansbury but she does the role proud and with an amazing voice.

And for those of us old enough to remember the beautiful animated movie, the opening narration of the show is a warm-hearted tribute to a legend which  is sure to trigger both a tear in your eye and definitely a smile on your face.

You should indeed make an evening of it and Be Their Guest at Disney’s Beauty and The Beast: The Musical!

The Tony Award winning musical Hairspray is fun, funny, and will leave you humming so many songs on your way out of the theater, but it’s the message that will move you to think about what society still needs to learn about love, supporting each other, acceptance, and standing up for what’s right.

The Goodman Theatre’s production of The Color Purple directed by Lili-Anne Brown  is truly stunning. A show you will want to see over and over for the music, for the power and for the essential message about powerful women.

Goodman’s The Color Purple is Magnificent!!

Not too often, you see a production that blows you away! It’s theater magic; it’s theater at its best and the way it was intended to be. Candidly, Goodman Theatre is among the best to reach that high bar show after show, season after season…. and the current version of the Color Purple has raised that bar for shows to follow.

The power of the voices, the ensemble, the subtle re-telling of the classic Alice Walker story… all adds up to a night you will NOT forget.

This show centers around the life of Celie brought to life by Brittney Mack, in ways better than any Celie I have seen in this role. Mack is no stranger to the big stage having played the original Anne of Cleves in Broadway’s SIX…but in THIS show, Mack blows the roof of the theater. She’s WAY beyond SIX….she’s a TEN plus!

Let there be no doubt: Brittney Mack is what every Broadway star hopes to be. She’s got the voice, the stage presence…She slays the role in the very best way, with a range of emotions, her relationship with other characters…but always, your eyes remain on this amazing talent who takes in every moment with her inner strength and unmatched talent.

The power and impact of this production is in its portrayal of strong women. Past productions I’ve seen often focus on the horrible ways in which men treated women….but here, director Lili-Anne Brown insures that we get that the story is here is not as much about the men, as it is about the strong women who truly possess the strength and power…it just took them some time to reach their individual moments and for the men in their lives to wake up to it.

I can’t recall a show in recent memory where every scene, every song, triggers the huge and extended ovations that greet the actors in this show. And they are all well deserved.

The set is on the simple side…no grand set changes for which Goodman is well known, but that works just fine. In this show, the focus remains on the actors, the characters, and that is where it belongs.

It’s hard not to compare this version to those on Broadway, national tours and finally the movies….and Goodman’s production outshines them all (and I say this with great respect for the fine actors who have played these roles before).

And certainly the well deserved attention goes to the amazing cast, but the work of the play’s director Lili-Anne Brown is stellar. Brown blew me away with her The Nacirema Society among her other works…but she just topped them all. Brown’s vision for this production is perfect and I’m just proud to say that she, like much of this stellar cast, is a Chicagoan!!

I bet if you asked author Alice Walker what she thinks of this production…..she’d say… “This…THIS is what I mean!!”

The Color Purple, simply put, is NOT to be missed.

“You Will Get Sick” by Noah Diaz is quirky and unpredictable but follows a path that will become most familiar. It’s the perfect blend of drama, power and surprise that has made Steppenwolf Theatre the gem it has been for a generation in Chicago and, of course on Broadway as well, as the Tonys pile up!

They say there’s No Place Like Home…and Chicago….Amy Morton…has indeed come home, like a twirling tornado of energy, and thank goodness. She is a joy to watch.

“You Will get Sick” is quirky, yet familiar, unpredictable but follows a path that will become most familiar. It’s the perfect blend of drama, power and surprise that has made Steppenwolf Theatre the gem it has been for a generation in Chicago and of course on Broadway as well, as the Tonys pile up!

Namir Smallwood has been proving himself an invaluable Ensemble member with classic portrayals over the past several years, and when blended with the magical touch of Amy Morton we see this is a show with a brain….with heart…and with courage.

This vehicle is so perfect to bring Amy back home to the Steppenwolf stage on which she shines like the star she is…or perhaps like a rainbow…indeed a force powerful enough to fly over the rainbow in this production. Alas, I don’t want to give too much away.

Cliff Chamberlain demonstrates that he indeed has heart as he shifts from character to character playing humor with a bit of glorious absurdity…. in the best possible way….

It’s difficult to describe the plot of this show without giving much of its surprise away. Although I’m not sure playwright Noah Diaz would object to these leaks…he might say you are least guiding the audience…as the crow flies…and the direction is helpful. The connection to a classic becomes clear in time…well, you’ll fall like a pile of straw into laughter and wonder as the magic plays out and with a set in the final scene that make you feel like you’ve gone from black and white to glorious color!

The multi-Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize for Drama winning Musical “RENT” by Jonathan Larson comes to life from the Highland Park Players playing at McGrath Performing Arts Center in Wilmette from July 18-27. The beloved musical is based on Puccini’s opera La Boheme but is set in the more modern day 1996-1998as it presents the challenges facing a group of struggling artists who live in Manhattan’s East Village…Alphabet City.’ The musical covers a year in their life and the challenges presented to some who live with HIV/AIDS at a time when it was a death sentence, how they deal with addiction, hardship a host of romantic relationships.

The story resonates with audiences of all ages and across generations. And this is the musical that brings you magnificent songs like Seasons of Love and La Vie Boheme among many others.

Bruce Vilanch is truly a legend in the world of comedy writing but also as an actor and comedian. You have seen his work if you watch the Academy Awards (for which he is a multi-Emmy Award winner), Comic Relief, Hollywood Squares…and on and on. In this very funny book, Bruce is candid about those projects he says (as does the book’s title) “seemed like a bad idea at the time,” but of course turned out to be classic camp TV. How do we know about these shows produced in the 1970’s and 1980’s? Because as Bruce notes, we live in the world of podcasts where during Covid he talked about these projects and then, of course, with YouTube, people can easily find them.

From the Star Wars Holiday Special to The Brady Bunch Hour (where the actors played the Brady’s playing characters!), to Paul Lynde’s Halloween Special, and the “classic” film “Can’t Stop the Music”( an Allen Carr production involving the Village People…hear why Cher might have turned down a role!

The book is filled with Bruce’s memories of days gone by or got fogged in because, as he notes, it was the 1970s….

It’s the story of 5 generations for Assyrian mother/daughter relations from the Ottoman empire to modern day USA but a story reclaimed by the women of their day, yet it’s told to us by a British guy (called The English Gentleman). Diana the Musical tells the story of Princess Di from her first getting connected with Prince Charles in 1981 thru her death in 1997 with a 90’s rock score by David Bryan (of Bon Jovi) and books/lyrics by Joe DePietro (All Shook Up and Memphis). A re-invented version of the musical CATS like you have NEVER seen it before! Based on T.S. “Titanic” is an Unsinkable joyous Hit!

How do you make a musical out of an American tragedy? The sinking of the “unsinkable” Titanic on April 15^th, 1912 was an event that still lives large in American history. And yet, Story/Book writer Peter Stone and Music/Lyrics creator Maury Yeston found the way to take a never-to-be-forgotten moment and humanize it, respect it, and re-tell it in a meaningful and also not-to-be-forgotten way.

Your evening should begin with a Titanic themed dinner in Three Embers (called the White Star for this production run because that was the name of the company who built the ship). And with food choices reportedly served on that ship, including short rib, salmon and chicken, it’s a great way to settle in for an evening that will capture your attention and emotions.

Who was responsible for the decisions that led to the disaster? The Captain, the designer? Did it matter anyway once the collision with the iceberg occurred?

How does one face a certain death on the high seas? If you’ve lived a long life, do you accept your fate? If you are young crew, do you just do your job? Can you send your loved one to be saved while you know your life will end?

These are not easy questions but the dialogue, the music and the blending of incredible voices keep you fixated throughout even as you know how this story ends….

This production truly relies on an incredible ensemble cast. Sure there are key roles…like the Captain thoughtfully played by veteran Chicago actor David Girolmo, the warmth of a deep long lasting relationship of Isidor and Ida Straus (played perfectly by Mark David Kaplan and Heidi Kettenring) and humor and class climbing ambition of Alice Beane (played with great humor by Lillian Castillo and her class status accepting husband Edgar Beane, (a joy to watch as James Earl Jones II always is!)

But truth be told, it’s the ensemble that makes this show so powerful, so well done, so captivating. Actors play several roles, shifting costumes and personas as quickly as one can imagine and always have control over their presence, shifting tone and presence with the role. Amazing to watch….with voices so strong that you can’t avoid feeling the power and emotion of the production.

Titanique is Magnifique!!

Who would think that a disaster 100+ years ago would lead to 90 minutes of incredible parody and non-stop laughter?  Titanique is exactly that…a laugh filled good time keeping the audience in wide grins.

The casting is brilliant. Clare Kennedy McLaughlin as Celine Dion is our storyteller and watching the cast members look to her with both admiration for the star she is, but also amazement at the story that just might be fictional as she tells us, keeps us in stitches. Adam Fane as Jack has the Leo DiCaprio look but with a much better sense of humor; Adam knows how to play the sexy role with delight. Maya Rowe as Rose is charming and endearing as she balances her life’s choices (even though that life may be nearing its tragic end!)

And candidly, if there are show stealers, there is, as always, the amazing Jackson Evans in several unrelated roles that are hysterical as Jackson has become known to play any humorous role; Rob Lindley is also a show stealer as Rose’s Mom with perfect sass and sarcasm. Finally, we never know what to expect when Lorenzo Shawn Parnell walks on to stage and to say what roles he takes on would be to give away some charming surprises, so let’s just say that Parnell owns the stage when it’s time for him to do his thing!

Get on Board! This is one ride you will likely take over and over again!

The events in Charlottesville in 2017 and on January 6^th, 2021 may appear unconnected. But there are connections that underlie both of these events that carry a message for the future. Riveting, Gripping and Compelling.

Prayer for the French Republic may be set a continent away, but the message strikes at home all to strongly…in fact, too close for comfort. In fact, the title could accurately be called prayer for America and the world. It hits home that hard.

It’s story that ultimately has a Jewish Family asking: “Why Do they hate us?“ Can anyone really answer that question with certainty? We see the fear, the danger, the uncertainty of safety and just living your life without an intent to bother anyone else….indeed, what are you so afraid of when it come to the Jewish people? A question that has been pondered for thousands of years and most answers to that question are based on false narratives and ideas. This three-act play is set in 1944-46 and 2016-2017, decades apart but with a history of discrimination which, if it has not be repeating, certainly has been rhyming.

But this is also a story of family…of the challenges and struggles that certainly every family faces, but here, we are made to wonder whether life’s questions can be pegged to the history of the Jewish people.

The cast, simply put, is stellar. Janet Ulrich Brooks (as Marcelle) is one of Chicago’s premiere talents and she shines here with strength and dominance; a tour de force. Rom Barkhordar (as her husband Charles, who has also made a mark in many Chicago-based shows including the classic A Band’s Visit at Writers) and Rae Gray and Max Stewart as their 20-something children provide the other two corners of this family square dynamic. There is something great to be said about every performer in this production which is one more reason this show is not to be missed!

Prayer for the French Republic is a co-production of Northlight Theatre and Theater Wit and has been extended through May 25^th at Northlight Theater in Skokie.

It is likely that this show’s title caught your attention. Well, in reality, this is the intimate and very personal story of Black Ensemble Theater founder and CEO Jackie Taylor who also wrote and directed this autobiographical work. Indeed Jackie as a young girl was in love with Elvis and that was something she shared intensely with her brother Joe. She wrote Elvis hundreds of letters…but did he ever write back? And just how does young Jackie (called Janet in the play) work with the family dynamics and difficulties dealt with by her brother. And yes, the musical is filled with all the Elvis songs you would hope to hear as only BET can perform them.

Joining in the conversation is indeed Miss Jackie Taylor who talks about her vision in this production, but also for the Black Ensemble Theater campus that is developing. Also chatting is Rhonda Preston, who has been performing with BET for about 30 years and knows Jackie so well, it makes sense for her to play Jackie as we all know her today. In addition, one of the “newer” performers in the BET family, Britt Edwards plays young Jackie (called Janet in the show) and she shares what it means to be part of the BET performing family.

One of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s earliest works (written when he was just 17!) and a classic in musical theater, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is playing now through March 30^th at Marriott Lincolnshire Theatre as its kick-off to the 50^th season. Most people know Robert Sean Leonard from his role as Dr. James Wilson in the medical drama House, or his star turn as a young man in Dead Poet’s Society (1989) with Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke and others. Review: “Fat Ham” at Goodman Theatre

To see or not to see! There is NO question: See Fat Ham!  Yes, it’s a re-telling in very modern terms of Shakespeare’s classic Hamlet. If I were to select a famous phrase that represents the message to the audience from this Pulitzer Prize winning (for Drama) play it would be: “To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.”

A barbeque set in the south is the playground for a story of Black, queer discovery in which we see the strength of character strength grow before our eyes thru a somewhat dysfunctional family afternoon. Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet that “there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” And in this production, there’s lots of thinking, lots of imagining…and the story is told thru masterful casting!

No matter the size of her role, Chicago’s very own E. Faye Butler commands the stage as Rabby, a larger than life figure who tries to control her family which is clearly beyond her control. But of course all eyes are on Juicy (warmly and thoughtfully portrayed by Trumane Alston) because without a sense of sympathy for a character who is strongly contemplating committing a violent act, this show can’t work. Strong performances are turned in by every single actor who embodies their role making even the exaggerated character play very real…and very relatable.

There is no need to trim any Fat from Fat Ham…it’s perfectly done as is….it’s not to be missed.

One suggestion: you’ll want to make after show reservations for dinner, because there’s little chance you can walk out of the theater not craving some ribs, ham…and for vegetarians, some really good mac and cheese!

Goodman has created another classic production that rivals any version you would have seen on Broadway.

In this new podcast, the worlds of history, theater and politics collide in a powerful drama called: “Debate: Baldwin vs. Buckley.” On February 18^th, 1965, American author, orator and civil rights leader James Baldwin (portrayed here by Teagle F. Bougere) debated American conservative intellectual and founding Editor of the National Review William Buckley (portrayed by Eric T. Miller) at the famed Cambridge Union at Britain’s University of Cambridge. Captivating the audience, it was recorded and broadcast in England. Years later, adapter/director Christopher McElroen chose to adapt the transcript of the debate for presentation as a theatrical production. And now, Timeline Theatre Company in partnership with the Theatre School at DePaul University and The American Vicarious, presents the Debate with the audience as witness just as the audience was 60 years ago.

The issues addressed resonate today as profoundly as they did 60 years ago and each performance includes a post-show conversation for audience members to express their views and interact with the actors.

In this new podcast, you meet some family members who live in the Fun Home! Fun Home is shorthand for funeral home but that’s just the setting for a family who face relationship challenges and lots of personal growth. We meet Alison (a character based on the playwright Alison Bechdel and her graphic novel) which shows us her life as a young girl, college age student and 40+ year old professional artist.

Written at a time when lesbian characters were rarely, if ever, the focus of the story, we see Alison work through her life’s coming of age and coming out development, and she’s not the only one with some life recognition to do!

Joining in the conversation is Alanna Chavez who plays adult Alison, Z Mowry who makes their Porchlight debut playing Middle Alison, and Porchlight regular Neala Barron(previously seen in “Sunday in the Park with George in Concert,” and “Cabaret”) as Helen the matriarch of the family. An engaging discussion about the deep issues reflected in this work with music by Jeanine Tesori (Shrek the Musical, Caroline or Change) and book/lyrics by Lisa Kron.  You’ll want to come out for Fun House!

 The story, a true one based on a graphic novel, is that of Alison, a 43 year old graphic artist and cartoonist played so very warmly here by Alanna Chavez. In the Pulitzer Prize finalist for drama, Fun Home, she uses her cartooning talent to draw out her life to understand where she’s been and to get it to make sense. Sometimes hindsight doesn’t come with clear eyes.

 Erasing and modifying her cartoons as she gains perspective, Alison remembers back with the assistance of two of her younger selves, one as a young child (Tessa Mae Pundsack alternating with Meena Sood) and the other as her college student self (masterfully portrayed by Z Mowry) who has the true realization of her sexual identity and the family challenges it brings with it. Adult Alison literally watches and looks over her younger selves as she works to understand her complicated past to get a grasp on her current life. The subtitle of the book by Alison Bechdel on which the show is based is “A family tragicomic,” and that description tells you what you will experience in the show’s 100 minutes (no intermission). First premiering at the Public Theater in 2013, the musical has aged well…there are not, after all,  many coming of age stories about a cartoonist lesbian in the playbook.

 Propelling the story are the fabulous book and lyrics (by Lisa Kron) and the widely varied music of Jeanine Tesori  (Shrek, Caroline or Change among her other works). From a Fun Home commercial performed by the young kids to a Brady Bunch family style musical number and a few stand out moments including Mom Helen’s (Neala Barron) blockbuster performance. Overall, Alison’s to-be girlfriend Joan (Dakota Hughes) has moments that steal the show with their deeply thoughtful expressions and interpretation of the role.

 Heartwarming, captivating and touching….the impact of the show is large….most likely your personal struggles in and from childhood are different from Alison’s, but you will likely find a resemblance, you’ll identify.  One way or another you will see yourself on stage…..and in that spirit, Welcome Home!

There’s nothing static about Trent James’ magic show! To the contrary, James’ magic is pump[ed with movement, action and amazement, keeping the audience laughing throughout.

The best magicians connect with the audience for a short-lived friendship and Trent James does just that with charm and a light-hearted style. Always reminding the audience that its time to applaud (because perhaps his hands are tied up so he can’t applaud) or noting at the point of amazement that clapping is a nice thing to do….it’s done with humor and fun and the audience feels like they are watching a good friend try out the latest tricks and illusions.

Studying magic since he was 5 years old and brought to it by a father who was also a magician, you realize that locally raised Trent loves what he does and he has learned his trade where the art of table magic and illusion was invented..Chicago!

Trent is youthful and his show is refreshing. There’s little doubt that younger people (and on this opening night, the young and energetic cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child used their night off to fill a section of the room; they two are youthful and added a great energy. Trent clearly knew he had a welcoming energy in the room).

Finally a magician who shared how a few tricks were done but even then, ending with an amazing moment we never saw coming. This magician is going to be a talent to be reckoned with not just among his peers in Chicago but most certainly nationally as the years go on. You’ll likely say one day when he’s appearing on Penn and Teller’s Fool us, “hey I saw that guy…he’s one of Chicago’s Very Own! And how talented he is!”
