It’s often a good thing to hear how a professional does what you’re trying to do. Animal photographer Li Ward describes her working process below.

Q: In your photos, the dogs and cats seem so relaxed and playful, yet they also seem very responsive to you and the camera. How do you do this?

A: If they seem relaxed and playful, that’s because they are! I let them be whatever it is they are. I would say 80 percent of my shoots are totally candid. I’m following the animal around while it does its thing, whatever that may be.

The other 20 percent are the more posed shots, where for variety’s sake I try to get the dog or cat to sit or stand where I’d like them to.

   — Li Ward, Fat Orange Cat Studio, interviewed for “Expert Tips on Photographing Your Pets,” New York Times, May 15, 2009.

These are just a few Good Cat sounds: Kelly hops onto our bed after dark, gets comfortable and begins to wash himself, accompanied by loud slurping noises.

Nicky goes to the vet very reluctantly, and we are grateful that the vet’s office is only 5 miles away, because after we put him in the cat carrier, nearly every second of the ride is filled with El Gatito Perfecto’s strident, mournful yowls.

Most puzzling to us is Nicky’s mad dash upstairs when leaving the basement after using the cat box. It sounds as though he’s wearing heavy boots, and we’d rather not imagine what he sees down there that causes him to run for his life.

It’s fun to watch the cats play, although we don’t always understand how their games work. One minute, Lizzie might come romping through the house, chased by Caitie. The next minute, here comes Caitie running back the way she came, with Lizzie chasing her. If Kelly or Nicky join in, there’s a lot of play -– and usually a lot of noise; to us, these little cat feet sound more like thunder than fog.

UPDATE: Well, it seems as though the problem with WordPress failing to post has been fixed, only to be replaced with another problem posting too early. It may seem that way, but in fact “Friday” Cat Blogging is up on Thursday because I set it up to publish on July 2 instead of July 3, and WordPress did exactly what I told it to do.

But why am I explaining? Nobody is going to complain about seeing sweet Lizzie Bennet now, or tomorrow, or any other time…
