Education as we know it is changing. And not fast enough from my POV

I have a friend who is a high school teacher, after many years in middle school teaching. We've exchanged ideas and articles over the years. And he's invented methods and systems to help his students learn, and their parents monitor progress.

And I've got my kid doing lessons on Khan Academy - an online teaching tool/site. He finds the videos interesting and helpful in getting through the lessons.

And I know Pearson is making some big moves as well.

Now, this article shows how the private sector well the open source sector is adding yet another tool to the mix. Science education prize goes to Open Source Physics. Education seems to be returning to self-directed, mentor based like we imagine the Renaissance had.

Where do you think education is headed? What do you want your kids to learn? How do you want them to learn it. What do you do versus what the institutions do?
