My clients often relay stories to me about how their children, or even grandchildren, have to teach them how to use their technology gadgets. I always get a chuckle when I hear these stories and wonder how long it will be before the next generation Internet will be developed by a 5-year-old.

One particular story my client told me today really tickled my fancy. She said that her son knows so much more than she does that one time she had to call her son's school and get him out of class just so he could tell her her password.

What's the most ridiculous thing you've had to ask your child or grandchild to help you with? Can you beat the above story? Leave a comment below and let me know.

Today's guest post comes from my friend, Andy, over at The Digitante. I asked Andy if I could re-post this after I asked my followers on Twitter if anyone understood the new Twitter lists feature. Andy replied and told me he had just written about Twitter lists on his blog and agreed to let me re-post it for Noobie's readers. So now, without further ado... Twitter lists.

Twitter started rolling out a new feature about 2-3 weeks ago called lists. Basically, you can group together your followers and others so your Twitter buddies are more organized. Let's check out the new features.

Setting up a list

The Digitante currently follows 144 people on Twitter. Before lists came along, those people were a nebulous cloud of people. They only order to the group was the order that they were added to my followers. With lists, it is easy to toss people into buckets that you create.

Notice you can sort people into public or private lists. This is handy for throwing your friends and family together. Chances are you are the only one who need access to that list. However, you may want to share a list of tweeters who have a hobby similar to you. My favorite hobby is tech stuff.

Now that I've added a few tweeters to my tech list, you can find The Digitante on Twitter and add my list of tech tweets to your Twitter.

What does this do for me?

A couple of things:

Prioritize - As you get more and more followers, it gets hard to keep up on everyone's tweets. I generally have a hierarchy of tweet reading on my personal account: buddies, Indianapolis people, Tech, and if I get around to it, celebrities. By dividing them up, I can skip the celebs if I'm a bit too busy.

Share interests - As mentioned above, I can share hobbies with others or check out their Twitter friends who have similar interests to me. On the side, The Digitante is a bit of a beer connoisseur. I find out about all kinds of small craft breweries and the various beers they have to offer through my acquaintances on my beer list.

Biggest drawback?

For me, there are no problems on Twitter's end, however, I use my BlackBerry with a program called Twitterberry. Unfortunately, there is no way to use lists on Twitterberry yet so I am currently still stuck reading all the tweets that come along.

Andy has been a technophile for years and recently decided to share his love of gadgets through his business, The Digitante. You can read about The Digitante's adventures through the digital landscape at http://www.thedigitante.com and feel free to catch him on Twitter as well. Be sure to add @mrnoobie and @thedigitante to your newly minted tech list on Twitter.

Here's a question I received from one of my readers. I thought everyone could benefit from my reply so I'm including the full question and answer below.

Q: When I tried to open a Word document attachment, a pop up said it was created from a newer version of Microsoft Word and that I needed to install a compatibility pack.

When I clicked through to see what was involved to do that, it came up that it would be a big deal with a number of preliminary steps so I decided it wasn't worth the effort and risk. Did I do the right thing?

A: You can either go back and stumble your way through the compatibility pack installation for free or upgrade to Office 2007. You can get away with the Home & Student version for around $90 - $120 (price fluctuates frequently). But you may need to spend another $80 to get the newest version of Outlook 2007 as well.

Keep in mind that Microsoft is releasing the next version of Office in 2010 so, even if you upgrade to Office 2007, you will only have the most current version for a few months to a year.

So you can spend just under $200 to be current (for now) with your Office software, or install a compatibility pack for free.

I didn't mention this but you also have another option. You could send an email reply to the person who sent you the Word 2007 attachment and ask him or her to re-save the document in a more compatible Word 2003 format. Then you would be able to open the attachment with no modifications to your computer.

The perfect way to avoid Best Buy up-selling

I was recently in Best Buy purchasing a computer for a friend. After I picked out the computer and monitor I was escorted to a special checkout line.

This special checkout line should be called the Best Buy up-sell line. When I arrived I was second in line behind an older couple. It took nearly 15 minutes for this couple to get checked out because of the 500 (yes, I am exaggerating) up-sells they had to respond to.

I debated for a second standing behind the salesman and giving a thumbs-up for each up-sell I thought the couple should consider and a thumbs-down for the ones they should avoid like the plague. Then it dawned on me that I would have probably thumbs-downed every single up-sell so I just stayed in my place and kept my mouth shut.

As a result, I'm pretty sure the couple ended up purchasing over half of the up-sells presented to them. Black-tie service; extended warranty; Norton security package; you name it. And they happily paid for all of it.

Next victim please

Finally, it was my turn. After scanning the computer and monitor, the counter person prepared for his up-sell attack on me.

"What level of Black Tie service would you like with your new computer?"

Little did he know I had the ultimate secret weapon.

"Oh, I don't know. This is a gift for a friend and I have no idea what he would want."

He kept trying. "Oh, ok. Well, what about an extended warranty?"

"Gee, that might be something he wants but I don't want to presume anything. Can he just add that on later if he decides he wants it?"

"Um...... sure. I'll just ring up the computer and monitor and he will have up to 30 days to return to the store to add on any features he wants."

"That would be perfect."

Victory was mine. And I'm pretty sure that everything I buy from Best Buy from now on will be a gift.

Every time I travel on an airplane, the plane reaches about 30,000 feet at the exact same time I realize I could have rented a movie from the iTunes Store on my iPhone to watch on the plane.

Too little too late.

But not on my recent trip. My family and I arrived at our gate at the Orlando airport with nearly two hours to spare before our flight departed. For the record, I don't need to get to the airport that early but the Disney Magical Express does.

So while my kids played their Nintendo DS and my wife read a magazine, I fired up my iPhone and started browsing movies in the iTunes Store. Within a few minutes I had my selection.

The rental process was simple. Touch here, touch there, enter your iTunes account password and the movie instantly starts downloading. Piece of cake!

One (not so) little problem

Or so I thought. One thing I neglected to take into account was the wi-fi speed at the Orlando airport. While perhaps ok for checking email, the wi-fi speed was no match for my 1.8 GB (that's 1.8 gigabytes or 1,800 <a href="http://www.noobie.com/glossary/megabyte title="megabyte">megabytes or if you don't like numbers, really, really, really big) movie download.

So I waited, and waited and waited until I heard the words that proved I wasn't going to make it. "Now boarding for Indianapolis." Nearly 90 minutes of downloading and the movie wasn't even close to finishing.

So once again I reached 30,000 feet and once again, I didn't have a movie to watch.

Be a boy scout and plan ahead

Ironically, when I got back to my house, my iPhone locked on to my own wireless signal and completed the download in about 15 minutes.

So what's the lesson to be learned here? For starters, plan ahead. And don't rely on airport wi-fi. Even better, download the movie on your computer with a wired Internet connection and transfer it to your iPhone before you leave.

One of the many highlights for my kids in Disney World was when they got the chance to star in their own video game. They did this thanks to a place called ThinkPlace, sponsored by IBM, in Epcot.

The steps required to star in your own video game are pretty simple. You just need to step inside a special photo booth and do the following:

1. Run in place.

2. Jump up in the air.

3. Do a victory dance.

The result (for my 8-year-old) is this:

If you can't see the embedded video above, please click the following link: Star in your own video game

Be sure to watch at minute 1:20 when I screw up playing the game and my son gets squashed by a giant red brick thing. And if you stay to the end (it's only a couple minutes), you'll be sure to get a chuckle out of my son's victory dance!

I can't tell you how big of a kick my kids got out of doing this. They thought it was the coolest thing they have ever seen. And I have to admit, I thought it was pretty cool too.

Take it home with you

And the best part? No only did my kids get to play their own game minutes after creating it, I was able to enter my email address and have a link to the game emailed to me so they can play it back home as often as they want.

This wasn't my family's first trip to Disney World. We went a few years ago before our kids started school.

I remember on the last visit seeing a bunch of professional photographers scattered throughout the parks. For the first day, we avoided them completely because we thought they were going to try to sell us a bunch of expensive photos.

Only later did we realize that these professional photographers only enhance your entire Disney experience. This is because of something Disney calls the PhotoPass.

What is a PhotoPass?

If you don't know what a PhotoPass is or how they work, allow me to give you a quick breakdown. A PhotoPass is a credit-card sized card that contains a unique code. Any time you see a professional photographer in a Disney park you hand him or her your PhotoPass (if you don't have one, the first photographer you talk to will give you one for free). The photographer will then take a bunch of pictures of you and then scan your PhotoPass card.

Here's where it gets awesome. When you get home, you can jump on the Internet, go to the Disney PhotoPass web site, enter the code on the back of your card, and see every photo taken of you by a PhotoPass photographer on your vacation.

The PhotoPass has a ton of advantages to it. Namely:

The professional photographers take great pictures

Your entire family can be in the picture (no more "hey where's Dad in all of these pictures?")

Disney photo editors can enhance your pictures by adding elements into your pictures (see the balloons in my sample picture above)

You can enhance your own photos by adding borders, Disney characters or the year you took your vacation

Now one thing about PhotoPass still stings a bit. The pictures are expensive. But as I mentioned earlier, on our last Disney trip, we only used the PhotoPass photographers sparingly. I didn't realize until we were back home that despite the high cost of the individual pictures, you can actually order an entire CD of every picture taken with your PhotoPass.

Yes, the CD is expensive. It is currently selling for $149.95. But considering one 5 x 7" print is $12.95, individual prints can add up a lot quicker. Plus with the PhotoCD, you can order however many prints you want as often as you want. And from your local drug store or online print retailer. With the PhotoCD, Disney gives you full copyright release on all of the photos.

A smarter Mr. Noobie

So armed with all of this knowledge from our first Disney trip, my family and I stopped at just about every PhotoPass photographer we came across. The pictures turned out great and I can't wait to get the full PhotoCD!

I just returned from a wonderful weekend vacation at Disney World with my family. It was great to get away from it all for a while but I have to admit, I wasn't exactly able to turn off my technology brain 100%.

So please bear with me as I dedicate the next few blog posts to some very cool technology-related experiences I had on my vacation.

First up, an iPhone app. I know, I know, I love to talk about the iPhone but experiences like this one just make it too easy to do!

Using my iPhone at Disney

You might think the part I loved about having my iPhone with me at Disney World was being able to call or text my wife if we had to separate in one of the parks for any reason and needed to reconnect. Nope, I could do that with almost any cell phone.

But how many cell phones can tell you the wait times, in near real-time, for all of the Disney World rides and attractions? Well, thanks to the Disney Wait Times app, my iPhone can!

How does it work?

The Disney Wait Times application for the iPhone relies on human input. In other words, if the current wait time for It's a Small World reads 10 minutes on my iPhone but when I get to the ride I realize the wait is now 15 minutes, it is my responsibility (duty?) to update the wait time for the application to 15 minutes. This is why I call it near real-time.

This may sounds like a major drawback to the application but it isn't. My wait times were dead-on or within 5-10 minutes every time! It's fun to think there were probably hundreds of people walking around the park all doing our part to make sure the wait times were accurate.

Not just wait times

The Disney Wait Times app was just one of three applications I used during my trip. The second gave me the complete menu listings of every restaurant in the Disney parks and helped me find them in relation to where I was standing. The third gave me step by step instructions on how to find all of the Hidden Mickeys.

Ironically, the biggest drawback to these applications was the cost. Two of them cost $1.99 each. I say ironically, because I actually debated whether or not $1.99 was worth it for an app I would only use for a few days. Then I finished my $10 hamburger and $3 drink and came to my senses.

I love using my GPS to locate the nearest Starbucks or McDonald's while traveling. Or to make sure there is a gas station up the road when I feel I can go a few more exits before stopping for gas.

Locations such as Starbucks, McDonald's and gas stations are known in the GPS world as points of interest, or POI. My GPS is loaded with hundreds of thousands of them.

But little did I know there were thousands more to be had.

After a presentation last Friday night, a gentleman walked up to me and asked me if I had heard of the POI Factory web site. I admitted that I hand't so he promised to send me the link.

I'm glad he did. Wow! I had no idea what I missing.

Apparently there is more to the GPS world than Starbucks and McDonald's. On the POI Factory web site, you can download such specific points of interest as:

Non-Chain Mexican Restaurants

Man vs. Food (based on the Travel Channel show "Man vs Food")

Haunted Houses and Ghost Tours

Offbeat Tourist Attractions

Farmers Markets

And even...

Red Light & Speed Cameras

All of the above points of interest can be individually downloaded as a file on your computer and then easily transferred to your GPS system.

Given the season, I may have to start with the Haunted Houses and Ghost Tours collection.

Whenever I give a presentation to a group of people, I open it up for questions at the end. This usually leads to some interesting questions. It also tells me what topics people are interested in that I might want to cover in future presentations.

One question that always comes up is the one about social networking, or social media. It usually comes in one of the following flavors:

"What is this Twitter thing?"

"My daughter told me to get on Facebook. It seems like a big waste of time to me. Is it worth the trouble?"

"Who cares what someone had for breakfast this morning?"

I always struggle answering these questions because social media is one of those things that you either get or don't get. So even when I explain what it is and how it can be used (more than just letting people know what you had for breakfast), some people still just stare at me with a blank expression.

Recently, someone sent me a link to this social media video on YouTube. I posted something similar to this a while back but this video concentrates exclusively on social media while the other video I posted was more generic to the entire Internet.

Think social media is just a fad? Watch the video and see if you are once and for all convinced it's not.

I recently signed up for a 14-day free trial of a financial service called Mvelopes. I won't get into the details of what the service does because that's not what I want to talk about in this blog post.

Instead, I want to talk about what happened when I decided not to continue with the service after the free trial. In other words, when I went to cancel the service.

It took a bit of digging on the web site, but I eventually found this under the Support option:

In order to cancel your free trial or to change your subscription plan you need to contact us via live chat and request the desired change at least one day prior to your billing date. If this is not done, the charge incurred is a non-refundable charge, regardless of whether or not you choose to use the service. Your billing date and how much you will be charged is communicated in your order confirmation e-mail.

Red alert! Red alert!

When I read this, noobie alarms were sounding everywhere. The only way to cancel is to use the web site's built-in live chat feature? What happened to being able to pick up the telephone? And how many noobies out there are technical (or courageous) enough to actually use live chat?

This bothers me because I actually really liked the Mvelopes service. The only reason I was canceling is because it was too much of a time commitment to keep up with it. At least more of a time commitment than I was willing to give.

But now I have a sour taste in my mouth with Mvelopes because I feel they intentionally made it difficult to cancel their service.

I never understand this because I probably would have recommended this service to dozens of people. But now that recommendation will come with a disclaimer. "It's a great service but be warned they don't make it easy to cancel."

How do you think that's going to go over with my clients?

People complain about spam all of the time. But not me. Between Gmail and Google Apps I get very little spam. And the spam that I do get is nicely tucked away in a special spam folder that I need only check about once per week.

But guess what showed up on my mobile phone today?

Grrrrrreeeeeat

Now I'm not sure if the "reply STOP" directive in this text message is legit or just another way to tell the spammers "Hey, we got an active one here!" but I did it anyway, more as a service to my readers so I can address this same issue when it is asked of me down the road.

As of now, I don't know any other way to stop text spam. Anyone out there know the answer? Please share in the comments below.

I just got back last night from an incredible iLearningGlobal conference in Salt Lake City. Not only did I learn a lot at the conference, but I got to network with some of the top movers and shakers in the company.

On the last day of the conference, several of us wanted to exchange contact information with each other. That's when I remembered the Bump application I recently downloaded for my iPhone.

Bump works like this. You open the application on your iPhone and specify which contact information on your phone you want to exchange. The person you are exchanging information with does the same. Then you simply hold your iPhone in your hand and "bump" hands with the other person. As soon as each iPhone detects the bump, it automatically exchanges contact information with the other iPhone.

If you can not see the embedded video above, click the following link to watch the video directly on YouTube: Bump for iPhone from Bump Technologies

Simple... and totally cool

Of course, this only works with two people who each have an iPhone. But believe me, it's not difficult these days to find someone who owns an iPhone.

So did I have to resort to the old pen-and-paper or business card exchange with the other people who didn't have an iPhone? Nope. But that's a topic for another blog post later this week.

P.S. Special shout-out to Alicia in San Diego for volunteering to be my first bump!
