J.D. Souther – Midnight In Tokyo (MP3 Download)

As far as I know, the new live EP (6 Songs) of J. D. Souther is only available for download. John David Souther is an American songwriter and singer who has written songs for the likes of the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Warren Zevon, Joe Cocker and many, many more. One of his finest songs is the duet “Silver Blue” with Stanley Clarke. You should tune in to that sometime! Of course he has always also recorded his own albums and the recordings of this album were made during a performance in Tokyo. I bet it was a magical moment. J. D. Souther’s voice is very delicate but here it seems to be even more delicate than usual. I really like his version of “Bye Bye Blackbird”. Anyways, all his albums are great but if you don’t know his music yet, this EP would be a good starter!

Lonnie Liston Smith – AfroDesia

Lonnie Liston Smith is hard to squeeze into any set musical category or frame. But that’s exactly what makes him so very interesting! This album dates back to 1975 and finally it was released on CD. His music contains Afro and Funk rhythms and influences and many renowned musicians have played with him. Just to name a few: George Benson, Randy Brecker, Steve Gadd, Ron Carter, Joe Lavano, Will Lee and Eddie Daniels. It all sounds very vibrant, psychedelic, funky, jazzy and wild. Check it out!

Mc Coy Tyner – With Stanley Clarke And Al Foster

‘McCoy Tyner, nobody’s finer’ – Brian Auger once wore a t-shirt with this slogan. When three masters like Stanley Clarke, Al Foster and McCoy Tyner join up to record an album together, you can only expect Jazz at its very best. Afro and Latin rhythms blend in to make this album an even finer musical treat. Heavenly.

Soweit ich weiß, gibt es das neue Live EP ( 6 Songs) von J.D. Souther nur als Download.

John David Souther ist ein US Songwriter und Sänger, neben Songs für seine eigenen Alben hat er für Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Warren Zevon, Joe Cocker und viele, viele andere geschrieben.

Einer seiner schönsten Songs ist das Duett mit Stanley Clarke „Silver Blue“, unbedingt mal anhören.

Die Aufnahmen dieses Albums wurden während eines Auftritts in Tokyo aufgenommen.

Irgendwie muss das ein magischer Moment gewesen sein, J.D. Southers Stimme, die immer schon sehr filigran war, wirkt hier noch verletzlicher als sonst. Ein Highlight ist für mich seine Version von Bye Bye Blackbird. Eigentlich könnte ich euch alle seine Alben empfehlen, aber ich glaube diese EP ist ein guter Einstieg in die musikalische Welt des J.D. Souther.

Lonnie Liston Smith – AfroDesia

Lonnie Liston Smith kriegt man irgendwie nicht richtig zu fassen, das macht ihn und seine Musik ja so interessant. Viele Informationen kann ich euch von diesem wirklich spannenden Album von 1975 nicht geben, nur soviel, das es jetzt endlich auf CD erscheint. Musikalisch ist das Album, wie alle seine Alben, sehr von Afro und Funk Rythmen  geprägt. Begleitet wird Mr. Smith u.a. von Musikern wie George Benson, Randy Brecker, Steve Gadd, Ron Carter, Joe Lavano, Will Lee, Eddy Daniels.

Alles klingt wild, psychedelisch, funky, jazzig und manchmal auch zickig. Was soll´s, reinhören.

Mc Coy Tyner – With Stanley Clarke And Al Foster

„Mc Coy Tyner, nobody´s finer“ stand mal auf einem T-Shirt von Brain Auger.

Wenn drei Giganten wie Stanley Clark, Al Foster und Mc Coy Tyner zusammen ein Album aufnehmen, kann nur lupenreiner Jazz dabei rauskommen. Afro – Rhythmen wechseln sich ab mit Latin  -Rhythmen, um den Zuhörer in Jazz Grooves den Verstand zu rauben. Ein himmlischer Höllenritt.

Les Dudek – Delta Breeze

Les Dudek hat einige Soloalben veröffentlicht, war Gitarrist bei Boz Scaggs, Dave Mason. Steve Miller und den Allman Brothers. Sein Album heißt Delta Breeze und auf dem Cover sieht man einen schrägen Vogel mit einer Fender Strat.. Wenn man das alles addiert, kommt unterm Strich ein echt klasse Blues Album raus, ohne Schnörkel, mit Ecken und Kanten. Wer Blues mag, weiß was zu tun ist.

Brand New Heavies – Forward (Limited Edition 2 CDs & DVD)

Once upon a time a there was a music genre called ‘Acid Jazz’ that was really popular throughout the world. And there are still artists today who continue to produce it. The Brand New Heavies from Britain played an important part in establishing this particular sound back in the days. To me, this music still grooves a lot although it’s not really ‘new’. This Limited Edition version contains a new studio album, a live album and also a live DVD. The music reminds me of Kool & The Gang and Earth, Wind & Fire. Great brass sections and the voice of N’Dea Davenport make this CD very enjoyable. This is terrific dancing music, as it’s always been!

Bobby McFerrin – Spirit You All

I will admit that I was skeptical at first when I read that Bobby is singing on his new album: “spirityouall”. Hm… But… I did listen to it with an open heart and mind – and was pleasantly surprised. Listening to this CD brings so much joy and fun, it’s simply incredible. Tune in to “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” and life will be good.

Phillip Bailey – Soul On Jazz

This album was very difficult to obtain for a long time. But now it’s even available as a Hybrid CD for under € 10.00! Philip’s falsetto has been known for great Soul and Pop music but on this CD he sings compositions by Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk and Weather Report. I think this CD is worth listening to. Whether you like it or not is up to you.

Helmut Brandt Combo – Berlin Calling

Jazz from Berlin that dates back to the years 1956 – 1958?? Oh, yeah! You better listen to it because it’s absolutely fantastic! These recordings come from the estate of the Berlin native baritone saxophonist and arranger Helmut Brandt who passed away in 2001. The recordings were done in the studios of AFN and SFB. Really cool Jazz and Modern Jazz ‘Made in Berlin’!

Wynton Marsalis – Swingin´ Into The 21^th  (11 CDs)

Wynton Marsalis is one of the greatest modern day jazz trumpeters, that is a fact. And now you can get 10 of his most important albums for under € 40.00! Every album features the original album cover incl. various bonus tracks, alternative versions and some previously unreleased material.

Brand New Heavies – Forward (Limited Edition 2 CDs & DVD)

Es gab einmal eine Musikrichtung, die nannte man Acid Jazz. Ab und zu tauchen Reste davon noch heute auf. Als Gründer dieser Musikrichtung gelten die Brand New Heavies aus England.

Brand New ist die Musik nicht mehr, aber sie geht gut nach vorne. Die Limited Edition Box enthält das neue Studioalbum, ein Live-Album und eine Live-DVD.

Funk und Soul Musik die mich an Kool & The Gang und Earth Wind& Fire erinnert. Tolle Bläser und die Stimme von N´Dea Davenport machen es schwer sich dieser Band zu verweigern. Wie auch immer, The Brand New Heavies stehen für beste „Tanzmusik“, auch heute noch.

Bobby McFerrin – Spirit You All

Als ich las, Bobby McFerrin singt auf seinem neuen Album Spirityouall dachte ich, Oh Gott, bitte verschone mich davor. Ich habe mich dann vorurteilsfrei an das Album gewagt und war auf das Schlimmste vorbereitet. Aber oh Wunder, es kam alles ganz anders. Das alles klingt so leicht und ist so fröhlich, das es nur so eine Freude ist. Mein Tip, „Don´t Worry, Be Happy“ und hört euch mal diese CD an. 

Phillip Bailey – Soul On Jazz

Das Album „Soul On Jazz“ des Earth, Wind & Fire  Sängers Phillip Bailey war lange Zeit schwer zu kriegen, jetzt gibt es die CD sogar als Hybrid CD für unter € 10.-

Eigentlich kennt man die Falsettstimme von Bailey mehr aus den Soul und Pop Musik, hier versucht er sich an Kompositionen von Chick Corea über Thelonius Monk bis zu Wether Report.

Ob ihm der Besuch in der Jazz Ecke gelungen ist, müsst ihr entscheiden, ein Ohr in Philip Bailey´s Jazz Trip zu hängen lohnt sich auf jeden Fall.

Helmut Brandt Combo – Berlin Calling

Jazz aus Berlin aus den Jahren 1956 bis 1958, kann man das heute noch hören ?

Das muss man heute hören, denn das es ist einfach nur geil.

Die Aufnahmen stammen aus dem Nachlass des 2001 verstorbenen Berliner Bariton Saxophonisten und  Arrangeurs Helmut Brandt. Aufgenommen wurden die Titel in den Studios des AFN und des SFB. Cool Jazz und Modern Jazz Made in Berlin.

Cruising around in your convertible or having a barbecue or throwing a summer party, this music will be just right. Anyone who loves decent Funk and Soul will play this CD over and over and over again…

John Scofield – Überjam Deux

Jazz guitarist John Scofield is always good for a surprise! And he seems to be on a never-ending quest… This time around he’s discovered Funk, R&B, Reggae and Afrobeat. Good choice, John. This album is so much fun and for this time of year, just perfect.

Sonny Emory – Rock Hard Cachet

Sonny Emory is the drummer of Earth, Wind & Fire but has also played live and in the studio for the likes of Lee Ritenour, B-52’s, Jeff Lorber, Steely Dan, Joe Sample, Eric Clapton, Dave Sanborn, Boz Scaggs, Stanley Clarke and so on and so forth. His music is really funky with a pinch of Jazz. This album sounds very powerful and rhythmically interesting. Sonny’s name guarantees quality!

Bob James & David Sanborn – Quartette Humaine

Bob James playing the grand piano, David Sanborn the saxophone, James Genus the bass and ‘Bad’ Steve Gadd the drums… Uhm… Nothing can go wrong, I guess! It’s been 25 years since Bob James and David Sanborn recorded an album together which ultimately even won them a Grammy award. Now they have recorded another album together, entirely acoustic – and this is simply Jazz at its very best.

Lee Ritenour – The Best Of

Any Berliner who has missed Lee Ritenour’s concert at A-Trane will find comfort with this ‘Best Of’ album. The recordings date back to the years 1977 – 1987. This CD features a lot of Fusion gems, and most importantly of course “Captain Fingers”, a tune that both inspired and challenged many musicians back in the days. This music hasn’t lost any of its power, splendor or joy over the years. Fusion, Funk and Latin to save the day.

John Scofield – Überjam Deux

Der Jazzgitarrist John Scofield ist immer für eine Überraschung gut, oder anders gesagt, ist immer auf der Suche. Dieses Mal hat er, nicht zum ersten mal, den Funk. R&B, Reggae und Afro-Beats für sich entdeckt. Schön für Scofield, aber viel schöner für uns, denn das Album geht richtig los und macht einfach nur gute Laune und das bei dem Wetter, grandios.

Sonny Emory – Rock Hard Cachet

Sonny Emory ist der Trommler von Earth, Wind & Fire, aber auch auf CDs und live zu hören bei Lee Ritenour, B-52^th,  Jeff Lorber, Steely Dan, Joe Sample, Eric Clapton, Davis Sanborn, Boz Scaggs, Stanley Clarke und so weiter.  Auf seinem Album begleiten ihn unter anderem Eric Clapton und Bruce Hornsby. Die Musik ist richtig funky mit einer Priese Jazz. Alles sehr kraftvoll und rhythmisch interessant gespielt. Der Name Sonny Emory ist eben ein echtes Gütesiegel.

Bob James & David Sanborn – Quartette Humaine

Bob James am Flügel, David Sanborn am Saxophon, James Genus am Bass und Steve „Bad“ Gadd am Schlagzeug, was kann da schief gehen ? Nichts. 25 Jahre ist es her, dass Bob James und Davis Sanborn zusammen ein Album aufgenommen haben, dass mit einen Grammy belohnt wurde.

Jetzt haben die beiden wieder zugeschlagen, mit einem rein akustischen Album, das dem geneigten Hörer Jazz der Sonderklasse beschert.

Lee Ritenour – The Best Of

Wer das wunderbare Konzert von Lee Ritenour im A Trane verpasst hat, der kann sich mit diesem „Best Of „Album trösten. Die Aufnahmen stammen aus Alben, die zwischen 1977 und 1987 aufgenommen wurden. Neben echten Fusion-Perlen ist vor allem „Captain Fingers“ zu erwähnen, ein Titel den wohl jeder Musiker damals mit Ehrfurcht gehört hat und wohl alle zum üben animiert hat. Damals wie heute, ein super Fusion-Funk-Latin Album.

John Medeski – A Different Time

John Medeski is known for his work with the trio Medeski, Martin & Wood who have also played live and recorded studio albums with John Scofield. This album is his first ‘solo’ album. All by himself he has recorded 9 compositions which are all little musical gems in themselves.

Anita Baker – Original Album Series

Finally, this month a new album by wonderful singer Anita Baker is due to be released. If any of you don’t know Anita yet or would like to purchase some of her work, you can get 5 of her original albums for under € 20! They are all fantastic. Hugh Laurie – Didn´t It Rain

I will be honest with you, I never liked the series ‘House’ but I really like Hugh Laurie as a vocalist. This album sounds a lot like New Orleans and Blues Jazz. The songs were penned by Dr. John, Jelly Roll Morton, Alan Price and many more. To me this album is really fun.

Boney James – The Beat

Everybody has some sort of habit, some like to smoke, others, like me, are really into Smooth Jazz. Yeah, I could try to use as an excuse the fact that Vinnie Colaiuta plays the drums on this album but hey, I am and will always stay a ‘Smooth Jazz’ guy and I love Boney James’ saxophone and all the songs that are smooth but still groove like crazy on this album. So, whatever!

Huey Lewis And The News – Sports! 30^th Anniversary Deluxe

Ouch! Time really flies! It’s been 30 years since Huey Lewis & The News released their album “Sports”. This Deluxe CD box set contains two versions of the album: one as a digitally remastered version and another one as a live version. Many of us probably haven’t heard Huey Lewis & The News’ music in a long time – but do give it a try again! This music shouldn’t be missed at any summer party and it works really well for cruising around in your convertible, too!

John Medeski – A Different Time

Bekannt geworden ist der Pianist John Medeski mit dem Trio Medeski, Martin &Wood, die auch sehr erfolgreich mit John Scofield Alben aufgenommen und Live gespielt haben. „A Different Time“ ist John Medeski´s erstes, und das bitte wörtlich nehmen, Soloalbum. Allein am Flügel hat er 9 eigene Kompositionen eingespielt, die jede für sich, eine akustische Miniatur ist.

Anita Baker – Original Album Series

Diesen Monat soll nun endlich, nach Jahren, ein neues Album von der großartigen Sängerin Anita Baker erscheinen. Sollte es tatsächlich jemand geben, der Anita Baker nicht kennt oder sich schon lange mal ein Album kaufen wollte, der kann jetzt für unter € 20.- gleich 5 CDs kaufen, jede einzelne lohnt sich. Eine Mischung aus Jazz und Soul, produziert u.a. von George Duke.

Hugh Laurie – Didn´t It Rain

Wenn ich ganz ehrlich bin, die Serie Dr. House hat mir nie gefallen, auch Hugh Laurie fand ich als Schauspieler „grenzwertig“, aber als Sänger finde ich ihn ganz klasse. Das ganze klingt nach New Orleans, Blues Jazz, die Songs stammen von Dr. John, Jelly Roll Morton, Allan Price u.s.w.

Zugegeben, nicht wirklich neues, aber Spaß macht das Album allemal.

Boney James – The Beat

Wie es für den Einen oder Anderen schwer ist mit dem rauchen aufzuhören, so ist es für mich schwierig dem Smooth Jazz abzuschwören. Ich könnte als Alibi angeben, ich habe die CD nicht wegen des tollen Saxophon von Boney James gekauft, oder wegen der Songs, die zwar smooth sind, aber grooven wie Sau, sondern nur weil Vinnie Colaiuta am Schlagzeug sitzt. Wie auch immer, es würde mir sowieso niemand glauben.

Huey Lewis And The News – Sports! 30^th Anniversary Deluxe

Man, wie die Zeit vergeht, 30 Jahre ist es her seit das Album Sports von Huey Lewis veröffentlicht wurde. Auf diesem Deluxe Album ist das original Album in einer remixed Version und auf einer 2. CD ist das Album in einer Live Version zu hören. Ich glaube wir haben alle das Album schon seit Jahre nicht mehr gehört, klar unser Musikgeschmack hat sich geändert, aber seid sportlich, und hört noch einmal rein, auch nach 30 Jahren ist das eine super CD für Sommerpartys und diverse Kilometer im Cabrio.
