Remembering back to 1991 when my son decided to ‘feel his cheerios’, a thought came to mind that I should document everything that would happen because one day I would write a book….(sure I would).

As the emotional experiences took place over 12 years, I would relieve the emotional pain by journaling words onto paper as if it would, perhaps, remove them from my mind.

As the years passed, the traumatic experiences became worse, and I continued to write my heart out on paper. Then one day…it all came to an end...physically, anyhow.

In the years 1998 and 2000 I tried to transcribe some of the words into a story, but the pain of reliving the past was overbearing, thus stopping the impending enlightenment of a tragic period in life.

Time goes on and the nagging to write this book became so prominent that one morning in January 2011 I awakened to the epiphany that it was now time, and it was time, indeed.

As the storybook came into fruition, it took on a new light as a ‘feature story’ on local television in September 2011 and so this journey began….my vision to use Chad’s legacy to help prevent or discourage at-risk youths, youthful offenders and young adults from using drugs and/or going to prison.

The Mission:

Although I have spoken to the youths in SW FL Juvenile Detention Centers since 1996, I remember thinking that I had to do more than just speak because when they were released, they went back to the same situations. On 10/3/2011 I shared my recent vision with the kids in attendance and asked them to sign up without even knowing what was going to transpire. Of 35 kids, 3 became members. On November 3, 2011 2 youths presented their stories and their self-written rap songs to the Juvenile Justice Center for the first time…….and they were a big hit! The holidays went by and I visited Youth #3. He told his story and rap to the Lehigh Kiwanis on February 22, 2012 and spoke as if he had been speaking all his life! A local Christian Rapper, Adam Bomb, joined our group and shared his self-written song with the audience and became an instant star! He will be a Mentor for the kids as well having a story to tell about his prior life.

The Vision:

Everyday something new comes to my mind for these kids. Currently I am working with a Lieutenant from the Sheriff’s Department to create a program similar to “scared straight’ called “Last Chance Hotel”.

Another program is “Trauma 4-Real” and will allow the kids to meet people who have suffered trauma from gunshots, DUI victims, etc., and they can find out what REALLY happens when situations like this occur, and the aftereffects such as the long rode to healing, if you ever heal! And this group welcomed my kids with open arms and such love!!!

“Chad’s Dream House” has been created in my mind for over 20 years (but I thought it was MY house) and is a 2-story recreational facility just for youths (13 and up), older youths and young adults. This building will be built somewhere in Lehigh Acres and the grounds will have a BBQ pit with concrete pavilion, an outside shower/cooling off area, basketball court and soccer field.

The first floor houses the kitchen and dining room with a stage, and the second floor is for amusement games, pool tables, etc. on one side and a wall-to-wall sectional couch with large tv on the other side.

The kids will maintain all aspects including laundry, cleaning, gardening, cooking, etc. and will be learning life skills at the same time. They will have a democracy in which to resolve ‘issues’ with people/situations who do not abide by the rules and will decide what to do about it/them with respect and grace.

Help:

If it were possible I’d like to have one Mentor for every child. If a child wants to learn music, perhaps a retired music teacher would become his/her sponsor and teach them the instrument of their choice while getting the actual instrument donated.

And we could have vans with volunteers to pickup kids on a scheduled route because the kids have no way of getting there and no money for buses.

We would have ‘shows’ like Glee and plays to be presented to parents and the interested community.

We would cook meals and feed the community and parents, and our pay would be simply compliments!!!

They would learn to feel good because they have done something positive, and how wonderful that kind of “high” is!

They would earn/receive respect from the community, parents and each other.

At this time we need organizations, churches, etc. for the members to speak to, more teens and young adults to become members and eventually Mentors, and help from the community in the form of monetary donations for fuel, office supplies such as copy paper, arts and crafts supplies, more t-shirts and postage stamps. So far I have personally paid for everything.

Protect your Eyes From Computer Strain - Tucker Vision Center

If you work at a computer, there's a good chance you experience computer eye strain. Eye strain and associated symptoms from prolonged computer work such as blurred vision, headaches and muscle strain are called computer vision syndrome, or CVS.

According to AllAboutVision.com, these 10 easy steps can reduce your risk of computer eye strain and CVS:

1. Get an eye exam. Report any computer vision symptoms to your eye doctor. Correcting even minor vision problems can make computer use more comfortable.

2. Use proper lighting. Reduce ambient lighting to a more comfortable level, use blinds on windows and avoid harsh fluorescent lighting if possible.

3. Minimize glare. Consider installing an anti-glare screen on your monitor. If you wear glasses, purchase lenses with anti-reflective (AR) coating.

4. Upgrade your display. Flat-panel LCD screens are much easier on your eyes than old-fashioned CRT monitors. Purchase a display with a large screen size and an anti-reflective surface.

5. Adjust the brightness of your screen so it's roughly the same as your surrounding work station. Also, adjust the contrast setting to a comfortable level.

6. Blink often to reduce your risk of dry eye discomfort. Also, use artificial tears if your eyes feel dry.

7. Relax your focus. Every few minutes, look away from your computer screen and at something at least 20 feet away for a few seconds. This relaxes your eye's focusing muscle, reducing eye fatigue.

8. Take frequent breaks. Stand and stretch frequently to help relieve back, shoulder and neck strain.

9. Optimize your workstation so you are sitting comfortably upright with good posture on a supportive, adjustable chair. Check your posture frequently.

10. Consider computer eyewear. Schedule an appointment to see if specialized prescription computer glasses will increase your comfort during computer use.

Valentine's Day ! How did you celebrate it? Did you open that box of chocolates and finish it before the night was over?

Or did you go to a restaurant and indulge in all kinds of fattening foods that are usually on offer on Valentine's Day?

Here's a great idea: how about a fitness date? It's not too late to celebrate Valentines Day over again!

While this kind of date may not be as popular as a traditional dinner out, it is much healthier in a long run. In fact, a recent Indiana University study found that 92 percent of married couples who worked out together stuck to their exercise program, compared to 50 percent of people who go it alone.

The reason for it is simple, "Partners will support, encourage and motivate each other to keep going". "This is one of those times that too much togetherness is actually a good thing!"

Another advantage of couple fitness is spending quality time together. "This is a great opportunity to carve out an hour or so in your busy schedule and do something that will benefit you both, physically and mentally."

Research shows that people become sedentary, rather than active, when they get married. A British study released last year reported that married people exercise much less than their single counterparts. And earlier findings, including research from University of North Carolina, have shown that married couples are twice as likely to become obese due to their inactivity.

"Unfortunately, many people tend to neglect their health and appearance once they get married." "Or, it may just be that they are overwhelmed by work and family obligations and just don't have time or energy for physical activity."

However, scheduling a common workout is not difficult - it's all a matter of good planning.

* Decide that instead of sitting in front of TV or a computer on certain days, you will focus on healthy activities.

* Set fitness goals: weight loss or maintenance, cardio workout, strength training, stress relief, arthritis prevention - whatever your most immediate needs are.

* Discuss which physical activities both of you enjoy the most - having fun while you exercise with ensure you are not tempted to throw in the towel.

* Agree that if one of you feels like giving up, the other one will offer encouragement.

* From time to time, review your progress. The better your results are, the more motivated you'll be to keep going.

If you don't have a spouse or a significant other in your life, you can still benefit from "couples" workouts, "Just find a workout buddy, someone who shares your goals and will keep you on track." "And that's a terrific advice for any day of the year, not just Valentine's!"

Buyers use promotional products to draw in consumers and potential business partners. The top use of ad specialty items is for business gifts, according to a promotional products usage survey, with 69% of respondents saying they use products as holiday or thank-you gifts. This is followed by trade shows with 47% and customer acquisition at 40%. But close behind are employee incentive programs, with 39% of end-users reaching for promotional products to reward productivity or improve morale.

Solar Junction, a solar cell manufacturer based in San Jose, CA, has used a handful of ad specialty items in its four-year history, all of them for internal efforts to improve the workplace or employee morale.

"It has been a great way to reward our employees," says Diandra Weldon, marketing director for Solar Junction. "It has really been a unifying thing."

Weldon began by ordering reusable travel mugs after employees expressed a desire to use something more environmentally friendly than Styrofoam cups. While it began as a simple solution to employee concerns, the yellow mugs, emblazoned with the Solar Junction logo, have become a part of the company culture, given to every new member of the team as well as to consultants, often before they even receive their business cards.

A similarly practical motivation led Weldon to order a set of branded black polo shirts for the company's 30-plus employees. With a staff made up mainly of engineers who spend their time getting their hands dirty working on projects rather than going on sales calls, few paid much attention to what they were wearing; if board members visited the office or an event came up, some staffers found themselves scrambling for something appropriate to wear.

"We were going to our first conference, and didn't have a booth yet, so I said, ‘If we can all wear this same shirt, we will get some brand recognition out there,' " says Weldon. The shirts proved to be a big hit and continue to get regular use. "I have had to order several more because a number of the men have worn theirs out," she says.

To celebrate Solar Junction's anniversary recently, the staff went to a minor league baseball game that tied in a specially designed T-shirt as a souvenir. The employees were divided into six teams, with each team getting a different T-shirt. According to Weldon, some staffers were such big fans of the other teams' shirts that they ordered additional ones for themselves.

But the product that got the biggest response from the staff was a branded zip-up fleece jacket. The heating in the Solar Junction office is less than stellar, and the occasional chilliness had become something of a running joke in the office. Basic Driver Improvement (BDI). 4 hour course

You must complete a basic driver improvement course (Traffic Collision Avoidance Course) if you want to retain your driver license in the following circumstance:
-You were a driver in a crash and are found at fault and
someone was transported to the hospital or
you had two crashes in a two-year period, which resulted in property damage greater than $500.
-Passed a stopped school bus
-Highway Racing
-Highway Racing - Spectator
-Reckless Driving
-Running a red light
If you receive a ticket for a non-criminal moving violation, and you do not hold a commercial driver license.

If you attend traffic school, no points will be assessed to your drivers license. You will keep your SAFE DRIVER designation and your insurance company cannot raise your rates, unless there is an accident. (You may only choose this voluntary option once every 12 months and a maximum of 5 times in a lifetime, unless this course is Court Ordered).

8 Hour Intermediate Driver Improvement ( IDI )

This course can be taken by a driver who has elected 8-hour traffic school or who has been judge ordered to attend an 8-hour course. This is an Intermediate Driver Improvement course .

*If you are not sure which type of course you need, please check your court papers.

8 Hour Aggressive

This course is intended for drivers who have been ordered by a judge to attend because they exhibit signs of aggressive driving behavior, such as: accumulating an excessive number of citations, driving with excessive speed, or unknowingly driving with a suspended license. Check your court papers to confirm that this is the class you need.

Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI) 12 hour course

This course is required by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for reinstatement of a drivers license which has been suspended due to excessive points or habitual traffic offender status, (non-DUI related). This course is also court ordered for numerous circumstances.

The chief aims of these courses are to educate students about the extreme dangers of unsafe and aggressive driving practices by getting them to examine their attitudes toward driving, and to suggest safer, more sensible behind-the-wheel behaviors.

Always on the search for new and innovated places to dine the Discriminating Diner recently visited a new concept restaurant for burgers. We found out about this place when 2 individuals who did not know each other told us where one could find the best burgers around.

Elevation Burger recently opened in the Gulf Coast Town Center. It is located between Miller’s Ale house and Rita’s Italian Ice. At first it looks like an everyday small burger joint…until you walk in and learn about what makes Elevation Burger so different. The restaurant itself is according to their website; environmentally sustainable, use high efficiency equipment, use renewable, non-polluting materials such as bamboo, sorghum, and recycled/recyclable materials and typically pursue “LEED” (environmentally friendly) certification for their restaurant build-outs. That is the just the beginning of what makes Elevation Burger so different.

They offer a variety of burgers that are 100% USDA – Certified Organic 100% grass fed, 100% Free-Range beef for their burgers. They actually grind the beef in the restaurant every morning and the patties are hand pressed as well. They offer several burger options; The Elevation Burger ($5.99) which has 2 patties, The Kid’s Burger which has 1 patty ($3.99), The Vertigo Patty which is 3-10 patties and is priced accordingly. In addition to all this they also offer 2 varieties of Veggie burgers ($4.49) and one burger they call Half The Guilt Burger ($6.19) which is 1 beef patty and 1 veggie patty. You then choose from a large listing of toppings; 12 at no extra charge and 4 where there is charge. If you do not want a bun you can have your burger wrapped in lettuce as well. The burgers are also cooked to order, so when your meal is ready they bring to you at your table.

They use fresh produce and vegetables, their fries ($2.79) are fried in Olive Oil. They offer shakes and malts ($4.29) made with fresh-scooped ice cream. Here too they offer additional flavors, at no extra charge, that can be added to the shake made with chocolate, vanilla or coffee ice cream. They also have salads, cookies, organic milk, ice cream and mandarin oranges. Like many options for soda? Wait till you see their high tech soda fountain machine. You just have to see it!!!

So what about the taste??? On our visit we had the elevation burger with a variety of toppings. My dining companion highly recommends using the hot pepper relish and jalapenos together to add even more flavor to these already tasty burgers. There is no greasy taste and while they may appear small it is because they do not use buns that are larger than the burger patty is self. The fries are perhaps the best around and the portion is large enough for 2 to share. If you have a hearty appetite you will not go hungry here.

The staff and management are professional and friendly and ask to see if you are enjoying you meal. The restaurant is very clean and orderly. When dining out, it is nice to have healthier options. Their menu includes the calorie count for all items. However, even if calories and healthier options are not a concern to you, Elevation Burger is a great choice.

So when at Gulf Coast Town Center or The Promenade at Naples Centre be sure to stop into Elevation Burger and treat yourself to a guilt free fast food meal. When they say Ingredients Matter, they really mean it!
